UK moves for Ibori’s extradition – Tribune March 3, 2010 by Bunmi Awolusi ■As Jonathan seeks amendment to Money Laundering Act The government of the United Kingdom (UK) is said to be making fresh plans to have former governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, sent to the UK for trial. Some associates of the former governor are currently undergoing trial in the UK over alleged money laundering charges. Though the former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Mike Aondoakaa, had rejected moves to have the former governor extradited to the UK on the grounds that he was already facing charges in Nigeria, sources close to the government told the Nigerian Tribune that some officials of the UK government, who met behind closed doors with Acting President Goodluck Jonathan, had broached the idea. British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, had, in a special congratulatory message to Jonathan on Sunday, asked the acting president to concentrate more on the fight against corruption. http://nigerianbulletin.com/summary-plus-news/uk-moves-for-ibori%E2%80%99s-extradition-tribune/03032010/13614/ |
It might be necessary to actually sack and jail FEC members for the Nigerian populace to be satisfied. Probing isn't enough. |
Jonathan begins probe of agric ministry, others By Ihuoma Chiedozie, Published: Wednesday, 3 Mar 2010 Indications emerged on Tuesday that several contracts awarded by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, including multi-billion naira dam and silo construction schemes, top the list of projects to be probed by the Federal Projects Assessment Committee, which was set up by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday. The FPAC was mandated to assess the status of all ongoing Federal Government projects across the nation and subsequently report back to the government. The committee’s scope of work involves the assessment of all ongoing projects in all the various ministries, departments and agencies of the Federal Government. However, a source in the Presidency informed our correspondent on Tuesday that huge projects awarded in the recent past under the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources were of utmost importance in the mandate of the FPAC. The source, who did not wish to be named, explained that “some of the projects that would be accorded priority attention have not really taken off even though funds meant for their execution have been paid to the respective contractors, while in other cases, the concerned projects have been abandoned half way.” The probe, according to the source, will involve contracts for the construction of dams and implementation of irrigation projects in some states worth about N30bn. The projects include contracts for the construction of a dam in Katsina State for of N1.19bn; the Ogbese dam project in Ekiti State, valued at N5.49bn; the Zobe dam project also in Katsina State valued at N6.86bn; the New Nigeria Farmers project in Kwara State for N2.82bn and other irrigation projects in various states valued at N3.71bn. The FPAC will also probe the execution of silo construction projects sited in various parts of the country. These include the construction of silos in the Federal Capital Territory in the sum of N4.17bn, Katsina State at a cost of N4bn and in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State for N1.73bn. The utilisation of the N4.73bn released from the 2009 allocation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, which represents 25 per cent of the Federal Government grant for a tractor hiring scheme in partnership with private sector investors would also come under probe, it was learnt. The committee will also assess the utilisation of the sum of N2. 892bn, being 40 per cent of a Federal Government grant to six selected private firms for the establishment of export handling, preservation and conditioning centres in six locations across the country. Also, the disbursement of the Federal Government’s 40 per cent credit facility, amounting to N9.52bn, to ten selected rice processing companies for the procurement, installation and setting up of model rice processing mills will also be assessed by the FPAC. The rice processing mills are to be cited in Adamawa, Benue, Ekiti, Niger, Kano, Taraba, Kebbi, Enugu, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Ogun and Anambra states. The source added that, besides the projects under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, ongoing contracts under the Federal Ministry of Works, especially federal road projects, are also of “top priority importance to the committee”. The source noted that “billions of dollars have been sunk into the roads without any significant result”. Other areas that would receive greater scrutiny, according to the source, are ongoing projects under the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, including the annual spending of over N600bn on subsidies, projects under the Millennium Development Programmes Goals (MDGs) and the National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP). The Acting President had on Monday set up the Federal Projects Assessment Committee to probe the status of all ongoing Federal Government projects. It is expected that, by the time the committee turns in its report in three months time, some of the ongoing projects could be suspended or cancelled outright. The expectation follows the mandate given to the committee by the Acting President, which includes carrying out a physical inspection of the projects to establish the level and quality of work so far done, and determine the professional competence of the concerned contractor. The terms of reference of the FPAC are: Take inventory of all on-going Projects awarded by the Federal Government; assess the level of funding of each project; undertake a physical inspection of each project to determine work done and to ascertain whether it is commensurate to the amount paid to the contractors; evaluate the professional competence of the contractors handling the various projects; and determine whether the level of execution of the projects is in accordance with the terms of the contract agreement between the Federal Government and the contractor. Also, the committee is to examine a plan of action that is realistic, practical and achievable including implementation phases for the execution of the projects; examine the reason given if applicable why the projects were not executed in accordance with the terms of contract agreement at the time of the award; and make appropriate recommendations to Government on how to fast-track the completion of the projects. http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art201003030561015 |
Turai, CSO, ADC sued for hiding Yar’Adua By AGENCY REPORTER, Published: Tuesday, 2 Mar 2010 An Abuja-based lawyer, Chief Kayode Ajulo, has asked a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja to determine whether the inaccessibility to President Umaru Yar’Adua by Nigerians since he returned to the country on Wednesday is constitutional or not. Those listed as defendants in the case, which was filed on Tuesday were the wife of the President, Turai; his ADC, Col. Mustapha Onoedieva; his Chief Security Officer, Mr. Yusuf Tilde, National Security Adviser, Gen. Sarki Muktar (rtd.); the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Abdulralman Danbazau and the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Media, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi. Also listed as defendants in the case were National Association of Newspaper Proprietors, League of Editors and the Nigerian Union of Journalists. The plaintiff wanted the court to determine whether the actions and conducts of the first to six defendants by disallowing the seven to nine defendants and the entire Nigerians to have access to the President are constitutional and have therefore contravened the provision of Section 22 of the 100 Constitution. He also wants the court to decide whether the effect of the public statement issued by Adeniyi on Wednesday, purportedly on behalf of the President contravene Section 1 of the 1999 Constitution. http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art2010030215523815 |
Imagine Rilwan Lukman threatening to sack people. That over recycled dinosaur has overseen the weckage of our indeginous refineries. ![]() |
ishmael:You need to reconsider that 100%. Yes, the army consists of Northerners and Middle Belters, but you will be shocked to find that some in te core North consider the Middle Belt to be Southern Nigeria. Witness an article published on Sahara Reporters by a Turai boy; He did all he could legally and otherwise to stop Goodluck from becoming acting president. When he failed he left the country because he probably couldn’t stand working under Goodluck. Guess who it was? A northerner? NO! It was Aaondoaka. A man that was not only southern, but was as southern as any southerner can be. SO HOW DARE THEY CALL IT A NORTHERN CONSPIRACY? http://www.saharareporters.com/letters/your-letters/5305-clarifications-about-wrong-or-misguided-statement-on-north-and-south-regarding-yaradua-and-his-people.html Do you need better proof? Oh yes! It is very wrong to call Middle Belt people Hausa, the Hausa's consider them to be Southerners. Abeg, lets welcome them to the South. |

He said while the challenge of restructuring the corporation was daunting, government would not rest on its oars until it achieved the desired goal.I cannot help but lof Jonathan. This indeed what NNPC ad Nigeria needs. Over the years NNPC has been a wide open conduit for the brazen theft of our money - straight out of the oil wells into foreign accounts. . . .Next kick out the twin vultures, Barkindo and Rilwan Lukman. ![]() |
Dis Guy:Yes, it is as they say, "a double edged sword". It cuts both ways, harvesting both Northerner and Southerner. That said, it falls on the aware Northerner to retort emphaticaly and unambiguously, "not in my name!" |
NNPC Reform Irreversible, Says Jonathan Adeola Yusuf 1 March 2010 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lagos — Reforms in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is irreversible despite forces against the move, acting President Goodluck Jonathan has said. Jonathan said this at the formal opening of the four-day 10th Nigeria Oil and Gas (NOG) Conference in Abuja. He said while the challenge of restructuring the corporation was daunting, government would not rest on its oars until it achieved the desired goal. "Fashioned along the lines of other successful national oil companies, the new NNPC will not get grants from the government. "It will be operated as a business concern that is conscious of its mission, able to borrow from the capital market and pay dividends to its shareholders. "It is a company that will acquire capacity to operate within and beyond our national boundaries. "As a business concern, the new NNPC will be required to pay to the government royalties and taxes just like any other company," Jonathan said. He said the Federal Government was unwavering in its commitment to pursue the reform in the sector in order to achieve the desired objectives. The Acting President expressed regret about the present situation where majority of Nigerians were denied the benefit of power supply, "which the petroleum industry can guarantee through gas". "For Nigeria to be exporting gas and yet do not have this vital resource for domestic power generation is like a farmer, who after a bumper harvest sells off all his or her produce. "The farmer spends the proceeds on other material things and consigns the family to living in hunger! It is not and will never be a wise proposition," he said. Jonathan appealed to the National Assembly to expedite action on the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill, saying it was central to the energy reform agenda of the government. He assured that the implementation of the post amnesty programmes was on course, adding that government would no longer tolerate criminal activities and economic sabotage in the Niger Delta region. Earlier, the Minister of Petroleum, Dr. Rilwan Lukman, had said the conference, initiated 10 years ago, had provided a forum for constructive dialogue by stakeholders in the industry. He challenged participants to engage in productive discussion that would transform the sector. http://allafrica.com/stories/printable/201003020499.html |
@Beaf, stop preaching to the choir. When are you going to be honest enough to admit that the main point of the article's author is valid? Could your reluctance be due to bigotry? Anyway, have a great day. I think you've been exposed already.
You too, have a great day.More than anything, cut down the myth of "Northern interest" and build a Nigerian interest edifice instead. Every educated person can see the farce of "Northern interest". If I may ask, interest against what? Did ndu_chucks reply that it is a legitimised expression of bigotry? Are you living with enemies? On the surface, the concept of "Northern interest" is childish, but it really is a lethal tool against the mind of any Northerner carried away by it. |

It suffices to say that the proverbial son of the slave owner did not benefit from the said slavery. Almajiris for example, remain one of the most marginalized Nigerians. The main point of the article presented by the OP is that there is absolute political naivety of the average southerner and even the educated ones such as yourself. The southerner (their opinion leaders as well as the common folk) would time and again take a perfectly legitimate national struggle and convert into a regional or tribal one. You are yet to dispute this point.
Why are there 9 million almajiri's in modern day Nigeria? This puts close to half of all core Northern children in the almajiri bracket. Added to this, 45 percent of Northern girls are married by age 15. Both of these issues are things the Northern leaders should be fighting to make into national emergencies, but instead, they are fighting for some nebulous "Northern interest" that only fills their pockets with filthy lucre and impoverishes their people. Almajiri's are deliberately created by Northern leaders. Uproot them, arrest them, hound them and lock them up. Percieved Southern opinion is by far the last of your problems. . . .We be watching ![]() |
