Politics › Opinion: Buhari's US Visit; Why I'm Not Optimistic by Bekwarra(op): 8:27pm On Jul 20, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari left the shores of this country on Sunday 19th July, 2015 for a four-day visit to the USA amid so much hope and optimism. His most ardent supporter have made it to look as if the journey is an achievement on its own and some of his ardent supporters have made it look as if it's the end to all of our problems.

I'm not going to base this opinion on any political party leaning or partisanship. Whether I'm an APC supporter or not is not relevant here, I just want to analyse this visit as both a Nigerian and a political scientist. I'll welcome informed and intellectual contributions devoid of insults and jejune knuckle-dragging arguments.

There is no need reminding that the USA is a powerful country, the largest economy in the world and the world's greatest military power. Nigeria is a developing third world country. President Buhari during the presidential campaign made a whole lot of promises but the promises he made to Nigerians can be bundled together under three encompassing structures: Security, Anti-corruption and the Economy. This 3 frameworks if carefully studied are the bedrock, the fulcrum of our nation and the myriad of problems facing it. Good foresight from the president and his team to pinpoint that. However, the president began to deviate from the moment he went to the G7 summit with a wish list. One thing the president should understand is that the G7 is a group of the world's most industrialised countries and these countries have one thing in common CAPITALISM. From the itinerary of his visit and feelers around, the president's visit to the USA is also hinged on these 3 vocal points. This is where the issue becomes complicated. Some supporters of the president have made it look as if these issues will be sorted once Buhari gets to the USA, ladies and gentlemen it's untrue. If anything, the issues might become complicated.

Like I normally tell people around me, the devil, MTN and USA have one thing in common, they'll give a chicken and expect a cow in return. If the USA decides to help on all these issues, there will definitely be stringent conditions attached to it which in the long run is not beneficial and also harmful to our nation. This is a country whom months ago refused to sell arms to our country in its fight against insurgency. Forget the new found romance between the USA and the new government, their foreign policy will never change. Whether republican or democrat, the American nation has just ONE foreign policy; the maintenance of the Unipolar world (one in which the USA is the only world power). The path they take is what brings the difference. They've only seen a government which they assume will be more receptive to their shenanigans. I hope the president doesn't fall for their tricks. How do you expect a nation so indebted and capital driven like the USA to dash millions of dollars in the fight against insurgency and also economic and infrastructural developement without expecting anything in return? There is more to it than meets the eyes. To make it simpler, I'll like to break down my arguments.

1. Capitalism is all about profits
The most important factor about capitalism is that is all about capital and profit. Invest little, earn more. The USA is the symbol of capitalism in our contemporary world. The spirit, body and soul. A capitalist doesn't dash money out anyhow without expecting returns in manifolds. The USA will only help so as you tie you down with stringent conditions attached to the help. Capitalists are not your friend, they are only after the money, ask Greece.

2. For How Long Will We Continue To Be Dependent?
The dependency by third world countries on western capitalist countries continues. How do you explain a situation where a president who wants to rule over 170million people hinge his promises and its actual actualization on the help of western countries. Buhari campaigned on "change", the role played by western capitalist apologists can never be over-emphasized. They didn't do all these for charity. Everything they do is about profits and profits alone. This means they surely expect something in return. That's where dependency comes in. Dependency is a socio-political and economic theory in international political parlance. Prominent dependency theorists are Raul Prebisch, Hamza Alavi, Andre Gunder Frank, Samir Amir et al they posited that "Dependency theory is the notion that resources flow from a "periphery" of poor and underdeveloped states to a "core" of wealthy states, enriching the latter at the expense of the former. It is a central contention of dependency theory that poor states are impoverished and rich ones enriched by the way poor states are integrated into the " world system"." They premised their arguments on these basic thoughts 1.Poor nations provide natural resources, cheap labour, a destination for obsolete technology, and markets for developed nations, without which the latter could not have the standard of living they enjoy.
2.Wealthy nations actively perpetuate a state of dependence by various means. This influence may be multifaceted, involving economics, media control, politics, bankingand finance, education, culture, and sport. You can read further about dependency theory, modernisation theory, world systems theory etc.

3. Imperialism in disguise
Due to time and space constraints, I wouldn't want to go into details of what imperialism is. But US and its western allies are up to something. The answer is not far-fetched; it's basically imperialism at play. This is economic and political subjugation in its real sense. USA wouldn't offer to help you without subjugating you to its whims and caprices. Let's call a spade a spade, these yankees are not father christmas that will be doling out money for free. They are just furthering their imperialist and capitalist missions. This is simply world systems theory. Please read up about it and also get some works by Andre Gunder Frank and Walter Rodney's "How Europe Under-developed Africa"

Politics › Re: I Chose Yar’adua Because Others Were Corrupt –obasanjo by Bekwarra(m): 2:33am On Jul 16, 2015
MuguliciousMUGU:
FOrmer President Olusegun Obasanjo said on Wednesday that he chose the late former President Umaru Yar’ Adua as his successor because the others who wanted the post were corrupt.
Obasanjo said one of the people who wanted to succeed him in 2007 was “stinkingly corrupt” and that the only way he (Obasanjo) could justify himself before man and God was to go for Yar’Adua, who, he said, was the only one among the contenders then who was not corrupt.
The former President, who spoke in an interview with a private television station,Channels Television, in Abeokuta, did not mention the ‘corrupt’ Yar’Adua rivals.
Among the prominent presidential hopefuls in the Peoples Democratic Party in 2007 were Obasanjo’s deputy, Abubakar Atiku; and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Peter Odili.
Atiku later abandoned the PDP to contest the presidential election on the platform of the defunct Action Congress while Odili’s ambition fizzled out with the nomination of Yar’Adua.
The AC later metamorphosed into the Action Congress of Nigeria, which later merged with the Congress for Progressive Change and the All Nigeria Peoples Party to form the now ruling All Progressives Congress.
Obasanjo’s choice of successor died on May 5, 2010 from heart-related ailments. Many condemned Obasanjo for choosing a man who was manifestly sick to lead the country.
But in theChannelsinterview, Obasanjo said he only acted based on the information made available to him.
He said, “Even if you take your son as your successor, you are not sure of what he will do when he gets there. Don’t ever kid yourself.
“What do I know about any successor? What he presents. When he gets there, he presents it differently.
“We did our best, but if you say our best is not good enough, I will say, when it comes to your turn, do better.
“With all the people that are available for successor, what we came up with was about the best that we could think of at that time.
“One of those who wanted to do the job came to me and said, ‘Sir, I like your job, but I cannot do it the way you are doing it.’ Now, if he had told me that, should I then come and say, ‘okay, come, let me give you the job?’ He had told me that, ‘I like your job, but look, the way you are doing it, I haven’t got the stamina to do it that way.’ Then, what do you expect me to do?
“Or the one that I know that, oh!, this one, before he gets the job, he’s stinkingly corrupt. Now will I be able to defend myself before God and man if with what I know I give this job or I encourage the man to have this job?”

Politics › Re: Report On Ekweremadu Out Next Week –police by Bekwarra(m): 2:29am On Jul 16, 2015
MuguliciousMUGU:
The police said on Wednesday that they had concluded their investigations into the alleged forgery of Senate rules by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and some principal officers and management of the National Assembly.
The police said they had interrogated all the persons involved and that the findings would be made public next week.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, told one of our correspondents on the telephone on Wednesday that “the police had done the needful.”
When asked if investigators had quizzed all the suspects in the forgery case, he said, “We have talked to all the people involved in the case and by next week, the findings would be made public.
“The outcome of investigation and legal advice will determine who to be prosecuted.”
Ojukwu spoke shortly after the Senate Unity Forum, a group made up of anti-Senate President Bukola Saraki senators, expressed concern over the slow pace of police investigation into the forgery allegations.
The SUF called on well-meaning Nigerians to, as a matter of urgency, prevail on authorities concerned to commence necessary investigation that would unravel the alleged forgery scandal.
The group’s secretary, Senator Suleiman Hunkunyi, had petitioned the police, alleging that the 2015 Senate Standing Rules was forged.
Hunkunyi’s petition read in part, “We write to bring to your attention the existence of the fraudulent introduction of a 2015 Senate Standing Rules as amended.
“We wish to attach the original and authentic Standing Order for 2011 that was used by the 7th Senate, Annexure A.
“We again attached the annex Herero, a purported amended Standing Orders 2015, which was used by the Clerk to the National Assembly (along with the Clerk of the Senate) in inaugurating the 8th Senate on June 9, 2015.
“The so-called new Standing Orders purports to allow for secret instead of the open ballot system that has been prevalent in all Senate elections as permitted by the extant rules.
“This infraction, among others, arises from the fraudulent production of the Rules without an approved consideration by the 7th Senate.
“At no time was the Standing Orders of the Senate amended during the entire life of the 7th Senate neither has the 8th Senate sat for long enough to produce the rules now being circulated and in use”.
The police, on the strength of the petition, subsequently quizzed the leadership of the 7th Senate, including Senator David Mark; his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu; former Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba; and the former Chairman, Senate Committee on Rules and Business, Senator Ita Enang.
But the SUF, in a statement by its spokesperson, Senator Kabir Marafa, in Abuja on Wednesday, lamented that the police action on the issue was becoming too slow.
Marafa said, “The problem is that the Senate was inaugurated using a forged document. Who forged that document? We can’t gloss over or sweep that criminality under the carpet, Nigeria is not a Banana republic.
“The standing order is an upshot of the constitution, it spelt out clearly in order 110 (1-5) how it can be amended just like the constitution spelt out how it can be amended in section 9 (1-4).
“The insertion of order 3 (2 IV) & 3 (3e i-iiii) in the 2015 edition is a deliberate act perpetrated by 5th columnist operating within the National Assembly to sabotage the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.
“It was done to cause friction, disaffection and generate bad blood among senators from different zones and provoke confusion in the senate with the sole aim of stagnating government business to give them time to perfect their agenda.”
He lamented, for instance, that the insertion of order 3 (2 iv), was done to favour the Peoples Democratic Party caucus in the Senate who supported Senator Bukola Saraki, to become the Senate President.
He said, “For 16 years of the PDP leadership, the presiding officers and committee headship were skewed in favour of the zones that produced more PDP senators but suddenly they introduced equality of zones in the distribution of these offices because they lost out, this is unacceptable by APC senators.
“Let me use this medium to call on all well-meaning Nigerians to as a matter of urgency call on all the authorities concerned to commence investigation into this illegality before it overwhelms us as a nation.”
Marafa added that there was no law that set time frame within which to clear the service chiefs, adding that President Muhammadu Buhari had the powers to appoint the service chiefs on acting capacity.
The President had on Monday appointed new service chiefs and a National Security Adviser after sacking those he inherited from his predecessor, ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.
Buhari had said the service chiefs would function in acting capacity pending their approval by the National Assembly as required by the Constitution.

This JAMB abi what is their name can be ridiculous at times. Why are we always going for lower and lower standards every time? Is anything wrong in us raising the bar? And to think with 245 in UME and 272 in Post-UME I was denied admission to study OAU in 2008 leaves a sour taste in the mouth. Everything that happens to human is God. God simply showed me, why go for the second best when you can actually have the best. Now a UI graduate by God's grace.
UI, OAU, UNILAG I know will never go for anything less than 200. 200 doesn't even guarantee you admission in these schools. The FG should simply make 180, 150 or even 120 the cut-off mark for northern students and for northern universities only. Please help us raise the bar in the South. If you wake me up without prior information and ask me to sit for UTME, I'll surely score more than 180. Mtcheew, no wonder I came across corpers who couldn't write or speak correct English language. So annoying. Imagine a fellow corper in my PPA teaching commerce writing "commacial bank" as a type of bank. Education is a joke in this country.

Nairaland General › Top 10 Weirdest Nairalanders. by Bekwarra(op): 1:24am On Jul 16, 2015
I've been on Nairaland for a while although most times it's ghost mode that I maintain with this account and the other one which has being in existence longer than this one. I've noticed a lot of people, the crazy, the funny, the weird, the dull, the brilliant, the intelligent, the beautiful, the ugly and the tribalist. These are the people I consider as the weirdest in no particular order.

1. Musiwa
The first weird person I noticed on Nairaland. His posts and comments on issues are both hilarious and weird. The way he goes about with his Oduduwa Republic and him being the emperor can be annoying and funny at times. He talks about it everywhere on both threads that are related to it or not. However, the weirdest thing about him is his use of English. It can fetch him a life imprisonment. Abeg bros when you realise your Oduduwa empire, pls don't forget me o. Oodua ni mi tokan tokan.

2. Oremusanctus
This dude is one hell of a crazy fellow (na joke o). The way he goes about on most threads especially in the politics section, you'll think Tinubu is his wicked step father. The way he writes "Yellowbar to refer to my people leaves much to desire. Whenever I see a thread about the SW or SE, I always look forward to his comments and he never disappoints. Once I see his comment, I just mumble within a mouthful of laugh "oloshi no bobo yi sha". What I know about people like him is, they are not always like that in real life. But yet he can die for Jonathan.

3. MrCork
He actually inspired this thread. For Christ sake this guy can kill someone with laughter. How will you insult someone with that your trademark text colour without forgetting to mention UK, Pounds and Range Rover Sport and end it with (No Ofeeinse). Bros I swear you get problem o, we sha don know say you be UK-based. Small time now you go talk say you wan post me £10. SMH for you (No ofeeinse pls).

4. Introvert
I don't know whether he/she is male or female but whichever way, I'll give you the benefit of doubt. The way she makes FTC for almost every topic is alarming. I know of Minister for FCT, but this girl must be Minister for FTC (Buhari should take note of this when compiling the ministerial list). Madam abeg, do you have a job? family? boyfriend? husband? Abeg na joke o (no ofeeinse)

5. Ecoterrors
I don't have much to say about this madame. The TERRORS in her moniker says it all. I don't know what Buhari has done to this madam, she hates Buhari with passion. She's always quick to call Buhari a terrorist on every topic. Buhari this Buhari that as if Buhari gives her spasms. EcoTERRORS will surely know how to identify a terrorist (no ofeeinse)

6. Orijin101
SMH for this guy. This guy is always high. What else do you expect when they use weed to cook jollof rice instead of thyme. If everybody is facing the north, he's always facing south, always incoherent. That's what you get when you drink a mixture of orijin, alomo, big stout, dry gin, sabrina and vodka. (No ofeeinse)

7. Temitemi1
From GEJ till 2019 to GEJ my Hero Fayose my Role Model; the story of this guy is a well documented one especially in the politics section. This guy is a GEJ/Fayose/PDP fanatic. Always around everytime to support his "club". He doesn't argue, he doesn't write epistles, in fact a paragraph seems impossible for him. He's always contented with his single-line messages which made some people to nickname his Robot Mugabe cos they thought it was a robot programmed to type GEJ till 2019. His GEJ my Hero Fayose my role model was so popular APC guys started copying it. Theirs was dry though TBH.

8. Cramjones
CONFUSED FELLOW (no ofeeinse)

9. ShowYourCertificate
I think the enmity between this guy and Buhari has more to it. He hates Buhari with passion and is always quick to remind us Buhari has no certificate, Buhari is a terrorist and Buhari is Boko Haram lol.

Spend some amount after I came back from the council secretariat where we did terminal clearance on Friday to cook a pot of stew with lots of meat and fish so I can flex these village guys as I will soon be moving to Calabar for #POP only to come back yesterday evening and to my dismay I found an "empty treasury". Yesterday at a news conference, Rafa Benitez said he met an "empty treasury" in Madrid after taking over from Ancelotti. My useless state governor Aregbese also claimed he met an empty treasury after being re-elected for second term thus his inability to pay salary. I rushed to Ogoja to check my account so I can make a new pot of soup alas! I met an empty treasury. After one year of service in Cross River, I'll be leaving an empty treasury behind. All these village girls, whoever dates them after will meet an empty treasury. Glo don fap my account balance leaving an empty treasury behind. When I pack away from this room at the lodge, I'll leave an empty treasury behind. Am I running mad? Oh I'm sorry it's the season of empty treasury. I hope I won't meet an empty treasury when I'm reunited with my gf in Lagos. Rural rugged, we are good to go. University of Calabar Sports Complex on July 2nd we are passing out yippee!!!! Unical babes abeg we don't want to meet empty treasuries everywhere, leave some for konjilized corpers.

It's like asking the CIA and the FBI to leave the White House. That's one hell of a dumb decision.
