This is not surprising,it is only a game that the corrupt officials who do not have the interest of this country at heart want to play, they will not succeed because non of them is qualified to defeat the selfless Buhari come 2019. it is a good thing that the government has commission of a new cement plant which on full utilization will provide at least 2,000 direct and 10,000 indirect job opportunities, I also appreciate the fact that the vice president has called on BUA Group to collaborate with other major cement manufacturers and reduction in cement price to drive infrastructure development in the country. This is actually a big step for the cement industry and the nation’s economy.

The World Bank and the federal government will be unveiling a $200 million livestock production development project in 2019 to interested states in the country. An official from the federal ministry of agriculture , Victor Egban, stated this while on courtesy visit to Kebbi State governor, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu in Birnin Kebbi yesterday. He said the project ,’Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), is a six-year project scheduled to begin in 2019 with the main aim of assisting interested states towards actualising their objective of developing the livestock sector.
He further explained that any interested state would have to give its counterpart funds amounting to N20 million and formally notify the minister of agriculture of its intention to key into the project. ‘’We are now at preparatory stage, visiting all the 21 states to let them know about the project and find out if they are interested about it”, he said. Mr. Egban who is the team leader of the project, expressed optimism that Kebbi State would key into the project given its feat in the agricultural sector in Nigeria.

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Okechukwu Enelamah, on Wednesday said the Economic Growth and Recovery Plan (EGRP) is targeted towards creating an average of 3.7 million jobs yearly.

He said the jobs will be created through robust investment in infrastructure and industrialisation which will create more job opportunities.

The minister said the focus of the job creation efforts will be youth employment and ensuring that youth are the priority beneficiaries.

“…The involvement of small businesses in the service sector is a major lever for economic recovery. We have committed to reduce unemployment from 13.9 per cent as of Q3 2016 to 11.23 per cent by 2020. This translates to the creation of over 15 million jobs during the Plan horizon or an average of 3.7 million jobs per annum,” Mr Enelamah said at a youth entrepreneurship summit.

The summit held in Abuja was organised by Technoserve, a United States-based non-governmental organisation in partnership with Citi Foundation.

While declaring the summit themed “Youth Entrepreneurs as Drivers for Economic Growth” open, Mr Enelamah said the ERGP represents the first blueprint by “this administration to not only deal with the present economic meltdown, but also to ensure growth in the medium term.

“The EGRP envisages average GDP growth rate of 4.62 per cent per annum over the plan period. GDP is expected to gradually turn positive in 2018 and peak at 7 per cent per annum by 2020.”

According to the minister, ease of doing business is another area that received the plan’s attention.

“My ministry has been in the forefront of the efforts to make it easier for everyone (local and international investors) to do business in Nigeria. When we came into government, Nigeria was ranked No. 169 out of 190 countries. Nigeria is now ranked 145th position out of 190 countries in the Ease of Doing Business index for 2018.

The plan envisages improved ranking to around No 100 within the plan period.”



President Muhammadu Buhari in April 2017 unveiled a four-year ERGP (2017-2020) to help propel the country towards the path of development and growth.

ERGP is an economic plan that builds on the 2016 Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP) by restoring growth, investing in people and build a global competitive economy.

While some Nigerians remained optimistic that the plan will succeed, others said it is not comprehensive enough.

The present economic templates being used do not have the ability to address the unique needs of Nigerians at present, American business magnate, Bill Gates said of the ERGP few months ago when he visited the country.

He said the ERGP identifies “investing in our people” as one of three “strategic objectives” but the “execution priorities” do not fully reflect people’s needs, “prioritising physical capital over human capital”.

“What Bill Gates was talking about was the budgetary allocation to create more money that will go into things like healthcare and education of which we agreed but we need to create the revenue first before we can send them back to the social sector,” the minister said while taking questions from journalists.

“ERGP envisages that if you invest in infrastructure, it will help create jobs and revenue for you to be able to invest in health and education. I don’t think our views and that of Gates is in conflict, it’s a matter of sequencing, they go hand in hand. We hold a stronger view of investing heavily on infrastructure so that we create opportunity for people while also working in the social sectors, healthcare and education in partnership with the likes of Technoserve, Gates foundation and others.”

He said the government is partnering with Technoserve by providing the enabling environment for the youthto thrive.

“Technoserve is doing a very good work in improving livelihood of youtharound Nigeria and Africa. The partnership is to leverage technology and ‘know how’ to help our people be empowered. We have to create the enabling environment and policies to make these things work. That is where we come in.”

Larry Umunna, Technoserve country director, in his remark said the event marks the end of the two-and-half year project funded by Citi foundation which saw to the training and empowerment of about 500 youthin Abuja and Enugu.



“This summit also provides us the opportunity to discuss issues that affect youth entrepreneurship in Nigeria, the idea is to discuss issues affecting youthand how we can help to reduce the scourge of youth employment.”

He listed various empowerment projects carried out by the organisation.

Beneficiaries also shared experiences on how they were trained on best business practices, record keeping skills and financial management skills required to successfully run a business.

Nigeria is a courageous country that stands up to its challenges by addressing them tenaciously, UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, has said.

Ms Mohammed stated this on the side event jointly organised by the Nigerian Government and UN-Habitat as part of the 2018 High-level Political Forum on sustainable development meeting in New York.

The theme of the event was: “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies’’ in focus with SDGs Goal 11.

SDG 11 is to “make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”.

She emphasised the role of town planners in making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable, regretting that many countries now grow slums, rather than cities.

The envoy challenged African countries to change the narrative.

“Nigeria is one of the key leaders in Africa,

“At the African Union, just 10 days ago, it was very clear that we were not only trying to address our challenges but we were leading on the issue of governance and corruption.

“I think Nigeria is a courageous country that stands up, that has many of these issues but speaks to it and tries to advocate for what we need to do to deal with that,’’ she said.

According to UN deputy secretary-general, what is important about the session going on now, is about in line with UN-Habitat that is connected to the SDGs Goal 11.



“The ‘Town Planning’ is incredibly important. I spent the best part of 20 years of my life in an architectural engineering firm and town planning was key.

“In many of our countries now, we grow slums, we don’t plan cities.

“There’s only, perhaps one place, that I’ve been to that I’ve actually seen the city grow a city and that’s Istanbul.

“Dense population but yet there were no slums in Istanbul, which is quite incredible.

“We should probably visit it to find why and I don’t think it’s beyond Africa not to grow the slums.

“We were known for slums, we were not known probably for cities.

“So that’s a challenge to us and I just want to thank the Special Adviser (to the President on Sustainable Development Goals) and the panellists herein.’’

The Forum is the UN central platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and provides for the full and effective participation of all members states of the UN.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, said Nigeria was mainstreaming all the three tiers of government into the SDGs.

She said SDGs could not be achieved at the national level alone, adding that three-quarter of states in Nigeria was being mainstreamed.



According to her, the Nigerian government is also prioritising some goals out of the 17 SDGs.

The presidential aide said baseline assessment and mapping had been carried out for the SDGs, pointing out that the plans in the 36 states were not uniform.

“But the federal government is helping the states to construct baseline assessment and to mainstream.

President Muhammadu Buhari has presented a supplementary national budget to the National Assembly. He said it should be funded with virement of costs already voted to items in the 2018 Appropriation Act.

The President specifically asked the legislature not to increase the size of the 2018 Appropriation Act from the current N9.21tn but to vire N228bn from the N578bn voted to projects inserted by the lawmakers.

Nigeria’s Information Minister, Lai Mohammed, has attributed the escalation of the farmers and herders crisis in Nigeria to what he described as the efforts of ‘religious bigots.’

Mr Mohammed was speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday on the launch of the federal government’s campaign against fake news.

The Minister likened the effects of fake news to a time bomb waiting to explode.

“In a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country like ours, fake news is a time bomb. And in recent weeks, many anarchists have been doing everything possible to detonate the bomb. But for the prudence and vigilance of Nigerians, they – the religious and ethnic bigots among us – would have set the nation on fire, especially over the farmers-herders clashes as well as communal clashes,” he said.

Mr Mohammed said the decision of the government to launch a campaign against fake news was linked to the possible effects of rumours towards the escalation of related crisis across the country.

“There is an epidemic sweeping the world. If left unchecked, it could be worse than all the plagues that the world has recorded put together. It is a clear and present danger to global peace and security. It is a threat to democracy. It is the epidemic of fake news. Mixed with hate speech, it is a disaster waiting to happen.

“For the media, the epidemic is even worse. This is because fake news, in most cases, is designed to misinform, undermines confidence in the media. And once the people lose confidence in the media, the society is in trouble.”

He said the campaign will include active collaboration with digital as well as traditional media and the National Orientation Agency to educate Nigerians on the effect of fake news on Nigeria’s democracy and corporate existence as a nation.

Mr Mohammed who had spoken on different occasions about the effect of hate speech and false information on the peace and development of the nation, further said that this administration does not intend to use the campaign to hunt innocent Nigerians.

“The essence of this campaign is to sensitise all Nigerians to the dangers posed to the peace and security, and indeed the corporate existence of Nigeria by the phenomenon, and the fact that each and every Nigerian has a role to play in curtailing the spread of fake news.



“The timing is not unconnected to the role of fake news in aggravating the various crises in the country as well as the need to check this phenomenon ahead of the 2019 elections.

The Information minister urged media organisations and social media users to comply with two basic steps before ensuring the dissemination of information.

“We do not intend to resort to coercion or censorship in this campaign. But we want to appeal to all Nigerians to play their active part. Before sharing that information on Facebook, Twitter or WhatsApp, do two things-1; Ask how credible the source is, and 2-Don’t share any information for which you can’t vouch. These simple measures may not end fake news, but they will go a long way in stemming its spread.

Citing a definition by the free online encyclopaedia, Mr Mohammed said fake news refers to: ‘a type of yellow journalism or propaganda that consists of deliberate misinformation or hoaxes spread via traditional print and broadcast news media or online social media.” “This false information is mainly distributed by social media, but is periodically circulated through mainstream media,” he added.

Citing the many instances of fake news that affected the results of the United States election in 2016, Mr Mohammed said the problem is also prevalent in Nigeria.

“Right here in Nigeria, the situation is not better. And it is not restricted to the social media. Last Thursday, the front page headline of a national newspaper was: Court orders National Assembly to begin impeachment of Buhari.

The problem with that news item is that it is fake news. According to the certified true copy of the order, the Presiding Judge of the Federal High Court in Osogbo ordered and I quote: ”The applicants are hereby granted leave to issue and bring an Application for the order of Mandamus to compel 1st to 3rd Respondents to start impeachment proceedings against the 4th Respondent, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.” This was manipulated to read that the court has given the go-ahead for the National Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against the President. Fake News!” Mr Mohammed said.

The information minister urged media practitioners to remain at the fore of the campaign by standing with the principles of truth in journalism.

Adedamola Kuti, federal controller of works in Lagos, on Tuesday said consultations were ongoing for the closure of third mainland bridge in Lagos for repairs.

The bridge connects the mainland part of Nigeria’s commercial capital to the Island, where many corporate organisations have their head office.

Kuti said the ministry of works would hold a meeting with stakeholders on Wednesday to discuss how to manage traffic during the repairs.

He did not specify the exact date the bridge would be closed to traffic or how long the repairs would last.

He, however, said the bridge may be “shut it by 12 midnight on Thursday and carry out tests and some repairs and open it to traffic by midnight on Sunday.’’

According to him, stakeholders attending the meeting to discuss the repairs include traffic regulatory agencies, transport unions, truck owners and drivers’ unions, law enforcement agents, among others.

In May, the federal executive council (FEC) on approved N18.874 billion for the repair and maintenance works on the bridge.

“The Federal Executive Council has approved the maintenance work on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State,” Kuti said.

“The project has taken off already and in carrying out the work, we may at certain times be shutting down the bridge for maintenance.

He said six other damaged bridges across the state were already undergoing maintenance and rehabilitation.

“We have contracts on maintenance of some of the bridges in Lagos,” he said.

“We are completing maintenance work on the expansion joints on the Coconut Bridge. We expecting the contractor to start work on the Independence Bridge in Lagos. There is repair work going on currently on the Apapa Bridge, that is, Ijora/Leventis Bridge.

“Maintenance work is ongoing on the Ijora-7up Bridge, we are also changing the expansion joints.

“On the bridge around the National Stadium area, we are putting covers to all the stolen manholes, we are replacing the steel covers from stadium to Costain.”

Kuti added that some tests had been carried out on the Otedola bridge, whose surface was recently burnt during a tanker fire.

He said the tests revealed that the bridge was safe for use and that the contractors would soon attend to the bridge.Read More

Volkswagen Group and 19 other automotive industry operators, investors and consultants say there are bright prospects of domesticating aspects of their manufacturing and supply value chain in Nigeria soon.

The Chairman/Managing Director of Volkswagen Group South Africa, Thomas Schaefer, who led the delegation of foreign investors on a visit to Nigeria, said their plan was to replicate the South African experience here.

“The plan is to have short, medium and long-term approaches that target growth in the manufacture of cars in Nigeria, similar to the over 60,000 cars produced per annum in South Africa,” Mr Schaefer said.

He was speaking during a visit to the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Okey Enelamah, in his office in Abuja.

A statement from the visit was sent to PREMIUM TIMES on Monday by the spokesperson to the minister, Bisi Daniels.

Mr Shaefer also requested that Nigeria’s new automotive policy be passed into law as it has the potential to activate their investment plans and unlock the growth of Africa’s automotive sector.

The international investors in the African automotive industry visited Abuja, Lagos and Edo State to engage various interest groups in the country to gain insight into the business opportunities and investment environment in the Nigerian automotive sector.

They also used the opportunity to identify areas they could assist in shaping national and state policies to support the auto industry, particularly in the area of domesticating manufacturing in Nigeria.

Other auto industry interest groups in attendance at the meeting included Volkswagen, Nissan, Bosch, BMW and Uber, apart from representatives from some financing institutions, including Standard Bank of Africa, International Finance Corporation, Graffitti, Deloitte, Actis.

The statement said the visit also afforded the investors opportunity to build relationships and network with key government and private sector figures, to deepen the structured business links and investment between Nigeria’s private sector and South Africa.



In separate meetings, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Mr Enelamah shared the federal government’s economic priorities with the investors.

Vice President Osinbajo assured the investors the government has the political will to implement the auto policy.

“There have been some difficulties with the implementation approach,” the VP said, “but this is the time we have considerable political will. If we can get the individual components right, we should be able to fly with this policy.”

On his part, Mr Enelamah described the visit of the delegation as a major boost to the development of the automotive industry in the country and the rest of Africa.

He said it was an encouraging expression of confidence in the leadership of the country and the spirited efforts of the government to exploit the socio-economic potentials of the automotive sector in the country to the fullest for the benefit of all Nigerians.

“We are excited by the role the automotive industry plays in the strategic and catalytic economic development of countries and we are committed to developing the sector speedily to facilitate the economic diversification of the country,” he said.

In 2016, the African Association of Automotive Manufacturers (AAAM) held meetings with the Economic Management Team (EMT) presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari in their desire to contribute to the development of viable automotive assembly sectors within key African economies.

To realise this objective, the meeting resolved to engage with governments and national investors, and secure their cooperation in the development of effective automotive manufacturing and investment programmes.

The AAAM, which has BMW, Ford, General Motors, Nissan, Toyota and VW as members is of the view the development of viable automotive sectors within African economies would contribute to Africa’s industrialisation, economic integration and employment creation.

APC has come with the aim to change Nigeria, anybody that is against this party does not have the interest of Nigeria at heart.This administration has achieved a lot within a specific little space of time, i think they deserve a second term in the office to continue some of their outstanding projects. i think four years is too small to judge the achievement of this administration. I believe the statement was misunderstood,The president has improved what he met on ground. In less than four years, this Buhari led administration has put a lot of things in place. it is true that Government cannot create all the jobs obviously but it is providing the enabling environment for the private sector and everyone else to create jobs. They have done a good job with the rice and the constructive industry.I think if this government should rule for the second term, they will definitely do more than expected.[color=#990000][/color]

i commend the effort of the president in the fight against corruption. It is a good decision by the president to sell the seized properties from the looters of this Nation. he first seized this properties, they were returned back to the owners when he stepped down. i appreciate the fact that he has decided to sell them and put the money realized from the sale into the national purse. By so doing, Even when he step down as the Nigerian president, no one will be able to go to the treasury to refund money to the looters. this will go a long way in growing the Nigeria Economy

This is a project that is in conjunction with the world bank, Everything has being put in place by the Government, a General Household Survey (GHS) was set up, the Conditional Cash Transfer was also designed on how it will be executed.This project is in conjunction with international bodies and programmes were designed for effective disbursement.
