Let me help you out. The receiving of gifts even by "friends", isn't a new concept when it comes to Judicial ethics. The difference is Thomas and certain members of the Supreme Court feel these rules shouldn't apply to them and they shouldn't have to report these gifts or recuse themselves when they do get them.

1.) Shelby County challenged Section 5 of the Voting Rights act law requiring jurisdictions with a history of discrimination to obtain approval from the Department of Justice or a court before changing voting rules. It was a process called “preclearance.” The Supreme Court led by the conservative right found this section unconstitutional. Justice Roberts said, it was no longer needed. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote in her dissent, “Throwing out preclearance when it has worked and is continuing to work to stop discriminatory changes is like throwing away your umbrella in a rainstorm because you are not getting wet.”

The appeals court appointed their own panel to create new maps.
