Guy, nothing stops you from further study while working, NNPC jobs don't come everyday. I suggest you use your tongue to count your teeth.

Going for the schorlaship does not guarantee any job when you come back because you'll still have to compete with those who have more qualifications than you do.

Answer to your first question is an absolute Yes. For the second question, it is quite unusual for a Ph.D. holder to be applying for a GT position. Having a Ph.D. implies having an indisputably advanced level of knowledge in a particular field with research works to show as evidence.

A Ph.D holder should be applying in the capacity of a consultant and leave GT positions for GTs. My assertions only hold sway in Nigeria though. I can't speak for other countries especially the advanced ones.

You are right about me expressing myself but taking you back is totally up to you.

Now considering that, the next thing you need to do is evaluate the risks involved. Perform a risk-benefit analysis. I do that everytime, it's the most logical and profitable way to go about things. i even did it with the false allegations made here against me when i was thinking of leaving the thread. Now think like this

What do i stand to lose/gain if i go for an unfunded masters while forfeiting an NNPC offer :
Pros : Potential to earn more after completion, once in a lifetime opportunity if the school is MIT-Caltech-Stanford-ETH-UCB etc, Being more competitive after school due to added knowledge

Cons: Cost of study, Possible debt, Opportunity cost due to wasted experience that could have been gotten at NNPC, missing hands on experience, missing networking opportunities, missing an early start to climb the corporate ladder if you are not keen on academics, missing career advancement opportunities offered by big companies like NNPC/Shell/Exxon etc which may rival or even better the current masters opportunity: MBA/MS-Executive programs -Certifications, Getting a competitive edge in workforce.

You have other personal pros and cons, adding everything up and weighing the pros and cons,map out a cost/benefit graph and decide without bias. It almost always works out better for you in the end

I already made a wrong choice 7 months ago (4 weeks after my NYSC) when I chose a sales job paying relatively high at the expense of knowledge (I didn't seek advice).
I regret that choice because it mentally and physically drained me but I feel the circumstances may be different in that NNPC offers a good opportunity for growth and development aside from the juicy benefits.

I'd appreciate if you can help me clearly define the choices and the impacts it might have based on your own experiences.

Truth is, as much having a masters gives you a miniscule advantage over non-masters holder, based on my recruiting experience, what recruiters really look out for is your work experience and what you can bring to the table. If we restrict it to just GT roles with no much experience, I can beat my chest that a GT with just B.Sc or B.Tech. but with impressive past projects under his belt will most certainly be favoured over a Masters holder with little or no project. In fact, in most roles, professional certification takes precedence over masters.

Why You may ask? It is because M.Sc. is generally academic, while professional certifications have been designed to address skill gaps in specific career paths.

Trust me right now it's a personal choice. You can choose to go for a masters or Take NNPC Jobs...at the end of the day it all boils down to what you want in Life as an individual. Some will settle for Masters and some for NNPC job. So Choose your path wisely. NO one can make that choice for you. You have to ask yourself what's your sole objective in Life and where you want to be in the next 5 or 10 years. You will be able to make a clear decision if you ask and answer that question yourself. Me personally I have my masters & I chose to go for it even when I had offers from places like PWC, Globacom and SHELL and am presently working. It's a Personal decision though. So trust me the decision is yours to make. Choose your path wisely that's all I've got to say. Just ask yourself in 5 or 10 years where do I want to be? That's all.Thank you.

You left Shell and PWC offers to go for Masters? May God bless your parents for making money to cushion the financial gap. Some of us ain't that lucky.

NNPC first, you can get an executive masters from Canada online. Kill two birds with one stone. In fact kill the two stones with one wicked NNPC bird

Network and security, risk, audit, corporate Comms,product marketing (big deal), database, core banking, project management,any many others but most of all these usually exist only in HQ, please just go for a big 4 you will have more exposure, if it's pwc or kpgm grab it, delloite too... Leave bank work oh.

@ Opzzy, there are several other departments you can work besides sales/marketing as stated above by @swargu. However, it takes a bit of luck to be posted to the non-sales roles as the Nigerian factor of lobbying or favouritism more often than not rears its ugly head. The worst part is that they can decide to move you to sales from your back office role anytime without any regards for the career path you have chosen for yourself.

Most people run away from the hounding and attack on self worth that comes with target pursuance in banking jobs, so staff are literally forced to do it, otherwise you have the option of quitting. Those who can't quit become depressed slaves to their jobs. Nonetheless, it is imperative to state that there are people that were born for the marketing role, they thrive naturally there.
