Russia has now overtaken Iran and Syria to become the most sanctioned country in the world, according to sanctions watchlist site Castellum.

According to the site, 2,754 sanctions were already in place against Russia before 22 February. A further 2,778 sanctions were imposed in the days following the invasion, bringing the total to 5,532 - outranking Iran's 3,616 sanctions and displacing it from the top position.

The US made up the primary source of sanctions at 21%, followed closely behind by the UK's and the EU's combined total at 18%.

Countries around the world have ramped up sanctions on Russia in an bid to intensify pressure on Moscow to stop its assault on Ukraine.

Stupid USA They are now begging Iran to halt their plans of building Nuclear weapons. If this was 10 years ago, they would've been threatening Iran with sanctions, and not trying to reason or dialogue with them.
But since Trump had meted all the sanctions he and all foolish Americans could think of on iran, including cutting them from SWIFT, they no longer have any leverage over Iran. The only thing they can actually do to stop Iran from building Nukes is to invade them or dialogue with them. NOTE: Iran before being slapped with sanctions by the west NEVER contemplated anything about building Nukes. After the sanctions, their economy survived, they now started their nuke program, angering the west. But the west can't really do much anymore since they've unleashed all the sanctions in their arsenal on them.

The Biden administration has announced a fresh round of sanctions against Russian oligarchs.

Eight wealthy elites will be cut off by the US financial system and see their assets frozen, including billionaire Alisher Usmanov, Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov and oil executive Nikolai Tokarev.

In addition, 19 oligarchs and 47 of their family members and closest associates will be banned from traveling to America.

The White House also said it will sanction seven Russian entities and 26 individuals for their role in spreading "false narratives that advance Russian strategic objectives and falsely justify the Kremlin’s activities".

President Joe Biden noted on Thursday that sanctions already in place have "had a profound impact".

Now, he said, Western allies are headed toward "the strongest unified economic impact campaign on Putin in all history".

Western nations have imposed crippling sanctions on several Russian billionaires, intending to freeze or seize their assets.

Some in the US are pushing for even more sanctions targeted at allies of Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

As part of that effort, a bipartisan group of US lawmakers introduced on Thursday a unique bill that would empower the Biden administration to use the proceeds from sanctioned assets to help Ukraine.

"Typically, sanctioned assets are frozen, not permanently confiscated, an appropriate safeguard under more normal circumstances," said Representative Tom Malinowski, who is co-sponsoring the legislation.

"But in this extraordinary case, we think it would be fitting and right to use the wealth that has supported Putin to help the country he is destroying."

Malinowski added that seeing the luxury apartments, villas and yachts of oligarchs seized would "give Ukrainians and Russians who hate Putin a huge boost" in a war that is being partly defined by morale.
