From Detroit Michigan to Austin Texas. 23 Hrs |
It is a shame how we deliberately cling to the differences in our culture and ignore the similarities. Over the years, our fore fathers have interacted in diverse ways. This interaction have given rise to some glaring similarities between our cultures. Here in Michigan where I live, there are about 11 tribes. The Chippewas are thought to be the first people to arrive here before the Menominee and Kickapoo tribes. The Huron, Ottawa and Potawatomi tribes arrived later, mainly from Canada and then the African Americans from the Southern United States. They are from different origins but they have continued to live together and highlight their similarities from hundreds of years of interaction. I am saying this because ignoring our similarities undermines our fore fathers' efforts in interacting with their neighbors in a true spirit of oneness. This ignorance has continued to tear us apart and we have continued to pass it on. |
I nearly fainted when I saw palm wine in Detroit |
The Amazon kindle still falls short of one critical attribute many tablet users have been craving for. It does not have the capacity to sync real-time with Windows based PC application. Simple everyday tasks such as running office and adobe apps on the projector seem impossible. I hope the release of windows 8 Tablet version will solve this problems and make the tablet a real PC with a micro form factor. I can't wait for devices running Windows 8. Did some testing at the lab and the results look promising. I hope the final product doesn't disappoint. |
234GT:Terribly wrong comment !!! |
Hey dude, I quit my bank job to come to the US as a student and I am doing very fine right now. No regrets at all. HOWEVER, I AM NOT MARRIED OR CATERING FOR ANYONE. The jobs are scarce when u come in at first. After a while (Could be up to a year), things begin to ease up. The pay is very lean for students too. If you have some good skills especially in IT or Medicine, you can get a good job. Having some solid IT skills worked for me. It is all about what you want. If it is what you want, then you can easily accept the outcome of your decision. There are people who have made it here. They were married and had nothing before they came. I also have friends back home that are doing very well. You should put 3 things into consideration 1. Why do you really want to come? 2. Can you sustain your family for at least a year without a good job? 3. Are you willing to accept the fact that it will take you a while and some good cash to settle down in a country like America. I enjoy everything I do today and I am among those that will forever thank God for bringing me to America. The real question is WHAT DO U WANT, Pray about it, take your decision and face the consequences. Home or Abroad, if you are where God wants you to be, you will prosper. Don't forget, 'PRAYER IS THE KEY' |
rolling_on:You are very stupid to make such an uninformed statement. |
Egbon Olu:It is very clear from your statement that you have never tasted the true meaning of a civilized and free society. If you know what is obtainable elsewhere, you will understand what that report means for us. |
Hi all, Anyone worked with ABAP? Taking ABAP and MS Powershell classes this fall and I might need some help. Just finished VB.Net and SQL Server, Could help out a lot on that , lol |
snowdrops:The video was fantastic. That was Warri-Sapele, one of the major roads in the heart of Warri. I was there in January. Thanks a million for that video. There are very beautiful places in Warri too. Parts of Enerhen Effurun and Edjeba are beautiful. Thanks for the video once again, It refreshed my memory |
I strongly disagree with the assertion that 2:1 is being dished out. Do not cast aspersions on the hard work and determination of others. We all know that people do make 2:1 through the back door but we often forget to acknowledge that there are more fake 2:2s than 2:1. Go out there. There are many opportunities for you to prove that you are better than them as you claim. The world is a global village. PROVE YOURSELF. |
I made a 2:2 in my undergrad. I am not the same as those who claim they were 'given' a 2:2 as if they deserved better. This 'I would have been better than u if not for my 2:2' attitude is a killer. Your degree gets you to the door of any recruiter. Your personality gets you in. What do you really know? How good are you? How much are you willing to improve? When you answer these questions sincerely, then you will see why most time we get there (Baring favoritism), and only a few go in. I understood this early and it changed the way I see myself. I have changed succulent jobs twice. Some of my 1st class friends say I am lucky. |
Cuddlemii:Not far at all, Ontario is a couple of hours drive from Detroit. Good luck with ur studies. |
@Cuddlemi, I thought you were planning to come to the US, Anyway, Best of luck. Been a while on NL. |
Congratulations to Mohaka and seadord. Really happy for you guys. For the fall applicants, please don't forget to ask about graduate assistantship immediately you are given admission. I almost missed mine simply because I did not ask. Some schools automatically qualifies you for one but some don't except you ask. It really helps, no matter how small it is. I wish you all success. |
I seriously pity those that believe tha the educational system in 9ja can compete internationally. Don't get me wrong please. I love my 9ja as much as you do. We have come to accept our fate an learned to rejoice in it. If only some of us can have a peek into how much other developed countries have left us behind in terms of education. In the US for example, you study. I don't mean passing exams. I mean you really really go to school. To get an A, u need to have 90%. It comprises of everything from your papers, test, assignments, presentations, class works, etc. Another difference is in the tools used for teaching. In my school, There is hardly any class above 30 students. We have access to our own computers and lab tools. You also graduate not just with a degree but also with certifications. Look also at the study environment. You have a fantastic library, a writing center with dedicated staff that helps you to weed out all your grammatical error as an international student. You also have Supplemental Instructors that assist you to go through your coursework in case you have any problems. All these things and many others put together makes you a well trained EMPLOYABLE GRADUATE. The main problem we face in 9ja is not that the students are dull or unwilling to learn. It is the environment we find ourselves where our leaders do not have any regard for good education. This is what makes most of our graduates who cannot afford extra curricular education or personal training to become un-employable. This is the reason most of us left 9ja to study abroad. I TELL YOU MY GUY, I AM NOT REGRETTING IT!!! |
@Savemysoul, there are no cheap universities in Maryland. You should be looking at Missouri. There are very good but also very affordable schools in Missouri. |
@mamima, The letter is addressed to the consular or consulate general depending on where you are applying to. |
Hey guys! abeg no vex o! The whole book, money and life thing na wah o! ![]() I pray every fall applicant get their visa and come here to celebr8. The United states is the best place to study on earth. I strongly pray each and every one of you should succeed. ABEG, MAKE UNA BRING MONEY OOOOOOOO!!! WORK NO DEY O! NO MATER YOUR STATE OR LOCAL COUNTY; NO MONEY = REAL SUFFER (BETTER CORRECT SUFFER). Anyway with God all things are possible. I had a wonderful start and I pray each and everyone of you get an even better start. |
Thanks Delta. MI as in Michigan. I just sent you a reply. |
Hi Charlie & Delta, How's the cold in Canada. Its really freezing here in MI. Could you please hit me up on nexxibenom@yahoo.com. I have some very personal discussion that can't go on the thread. Maybe we could chat on phone from then on. |
@ house, sorry i've been away 4 a while. good to know a lot more visas were handed out. KWIZZY, NAGGY, SMOOTHSAIL, SAVE MY SOUL, congratulations!!! Its freezing cold here! @Layric, how u dey! hit me up on YM. @Tee.baba, be very careful o! |
@Delta 007, u are the main man, more power to ur elbow this 2011. @Charlie, congratulations on your study permit. pls let me know when u get a phone. benom55@yahoo.ca @sosodat, harryman and lanreade, congrats too. Hope u all settle down very fast. @Rare, the book work suppose don finish na, abi? Happy new yr to all my peeps |
@dantecmu, I quite agree with u that to come to the US to study is not a joke. It involves a lot of finance and support. I've met people that have told me worse things than u said but they also add a few survival tips in it too. Anyway dantecmu, I don't mean any disrespect. let the love continue to flow. Let the advice continue to pour. We are listening and preparing. |
I don't think anyone on this thread is expecting a bed of roses in america but i can bet the 80 - 90 percent of you who are already there and professing this doom and gloom never had your fees when u left. Instead of discouraging people, I believe there are more constructive way of explaining things even though we all agree that they are not pleasant. Don't also forget that you are not the only ones in america. |
@tee.baba, vicjustice is right. U can get a life ban from the US for presenting fake documents and attempting to mislead the VO. But if u read my post very well, u will notice the main points there. Make ur answers short so u don't rope ur self in a discussion u cannot defend. Travelling out and returning to 9ja is a good thing. Just look for a way to exploit it. IF u have actually been working u shld have documents to back u up like employment letter or payslip. On the study leave or resignation issue, NO ONE WILL ASK U THAT except u bring it up urself. |
@James2020, u no do me anything. Sometimes the network is just too poor that i can't even complete a simple discussion. U can see our last discussion paid off. Thats the spirit man. work more on ur style of writing and u'll be fine on the thread. I've been offline though, for a while because of work. Its end of year and we are doing a lot of stuffs and preparing for the next financial year. |
@tee.baba, no one at the consulate is interested wether u are resigning or not. They will not even talk about it except u bring it up yourself. if u venture bring up any topic when u were not specifically asked, believe me, u will make a mess of your self. What did u travel abroad to do? U shld be able to say it. Better still i can just say vacation. Do u work? Yes or No, simple. Where do u work and what do u do there? Simply explain your job functions. Honestly, this is a rare case as the VO does not have enof time for all these except u raise it up by yourself. |
@Tee.baba, no one will ask u when u will resign or wether u were given a study leave or whatever from ur office. Its immaterial to your interview except you bring it up yourself. They might just ask u if you've travelled before. If yes, they can just ask u what u went to do. Simple, one sentence answers will do. Trust me, no body cares wether ur office gave u leave or not. |
@4ril, i booked Royal air maroc for just 120k from lagos to jfk. I used an agent here in lagos. U can reach him on 08023200019. |
@ Bukola, i'm really very happy for u. thank God u made it. You could see the innocent and sincere style of ur language. That is what I believe, captivated the VO and ensured u got ur visa. If u can establish innocence and sincerity within your first 1minute, they will belive anything u say. |
