why Change the ruling party? Why not start by Changing the people and then the people can, as a whole, push to change the ruling party? As long Nigerians remain complacent, the ruling party will continue to thrive.
How do you propose to achieve this. As in changing the people? huh

Sometimes Nigerians miss the right answers, which wallow in the shallow end, as they go looking for deep answers. Nigerians also tend to project their own wishes and desires into others. A good example of the later is the absurd notion that, ‘America secretly desires Nigeria to be a great country, and that’ is why Obama will go to Ghana to teach us Nigerians a lesson’. How ridiculous. The only good country, as far as America and its western allies are concerned, is an obedient country. You can bet every penny you have that although a healthy China is good for the world economy and America benefits from Chinese investment and from investing in China, America secretly wishes China to crumble. America would rather India than China. In Africa, think of Ghana as India and Nigeria as China.

Finally, here is a fraction of what I think about the West/white agenda in West Africa. Put simply, the West see Africa as playing a grater role in the world as this century unfolds. That role could simply be as a provider of resources, provider of disability or both. America wants to play a grater role in Africa than it has done since after the Cold War. In West Africa, it wants to establish an influential role in an anglophile country. Nigeria is too complex and its people too independent minded. Ghana, more reliant on foreign aid and therefore apparently more controllable, seems ideal.
I totaly agree with you on this one.

Just to put things into perspective for all of you who think Nigeria deserves an invite, Our economy of 150 million people  is $100 million (US dollars) smaller than that of Czech Republic's. Czech is 10 m people.

I am very disappointed that no Nigerian made it into the top 10. Why this mediocrity coming from Nigeria? They are known to be the most corrupt country and most adept at fraud. The least they could do is make it into the top 10 fraudsters of all time! I think they should try harder - make Nigeria proud! grin

Seriously though, I think it's hilarious that Nigerians aren't as bad as they are perceived to be!

PoliticsRe: I Don't Believe The Problem With Nigeria Is Our Leaders by beystwin: 4:54pm On Feb 22, 2009
I believe that 60% of the blame lies with our leaders, and 40% lies with the public. There is no such thing as a “good people”. Every human being is potentially programmed to be “bad”. The only thing that keeps us on track are the laws implemented, which act as a deterrent. No matter what race you are or what country you are from, we all have a "bad" disposition. Nigerian people commit crimes because the country they live in does not reinforce the correct laws. Western “role models” such as Norway and Sweden aren't almost crime-free because the people are somehow better – these countries merely enforce their laws more efficiently and thus deter their people from committing crime. Also, their poverty levels are very low, which reduces the “need” to commit crimes. In Nigeria’s case, this is where good leaders come in. All we need are good leaders to ensure that the correct laws are enforced. This includes having a functional justice system which ensures that people who commit crimes are arrested, receive a fair trial and are subsequently locked up. There should be no such thing as “untouchable” individuals who don’t go to jail due to their status/wealth, as this is what leads to the break down of a society: in the absence of justice reigns anarchy.
Nigerian citizens should be enlightened or made aware of the fact that they need to get rid of their leaders if they are not performing. This is where Nigerian people fail. You can’t blame them for not being law-abiding in our present dysfunctional society, but you can blame them for not ensuring that they have good leaders.
The question is, how do you find good leaders in a dishonest society? It is important to emphasise that leaders who commit crimes should do the right thing and resign, but you don't see this happening in Nigeria. People should insist that these dishonest leaders resign, instead of allowing them to remain in office.
It is also better for a sick leader to resign, rather than dragging the country down with him. grin
PoliticsRe: Financial Crunch - Britain To Repatriate 800 Nigerians by beystwin: 2:27pm On Feb 22, 2009
they are prisoner are they not?
Deals will be signed to repatriate up to 3,000 foreign prisoners currently behind bars in the UK, Gordon Brown revealed yesterday.

In a move which should significantly ease the prisons crisis south of the border, an agreement with Jamaica is close to completion which could lead to 1,400 inmates being flown home to serve the rest of their sentences.

Mr Brown also told MPs that agreements were being sought with Nigeria, Vietnam and China, which between them account for 1,700 prisoners in Britain.

The diplomatic deals could raise questions about sentences imposed by British courts being fully enforced. Many of the Jamaican inmates are female drugs "mules", caught smuggling illegal substances ,

Kobojunkie wrote:
We have believed that since the 70’s. It is almost 40 years later and we still want to keep believing Nigeria should invest a lot in agriculture?
What is wrong with investing in agriculture? Take Marocco, for example. They invested in agriculture and are now reaping the benefits, as food prices have soared.
The world population is increasing, as is Nigeria's population. Investing in agriculture would help meet the needs of our own population, and it would be much easier to rule the country if everybody had enough to eat and was satisfied.

Was your question ironic, kobojunkie? Or are you trying to say that we should have done this a long time ago, instead of merely believing it?
PoliticsRe: Global Recession And Africa by beystwin(op): 9:02pm On Feb 20, 2009
I agree with debosky. Nigeria does not heavily depend on aid because most Western countries are reluctant to give Nigeria financial support in the first place, as in their perception, corruption is rampant in our country. Ghana and Uganda get more financial support than Nigeria does, because the West seems to be largely pleased with the way they are running their economy and therefore rewards them with aid, so to speak. Many Western countries are enthusiastic about sending money there. The problem is, however, that the budget of these countries is thus largely based on foreign aid – e.g. 60% of Uganda’s budget is derived from foreign aid- and if this aid were ever to cease (due to the financial crisis these Western countries are rapidly running out of money themselves), countries like Ghana and Uganda would be in trouble. Nigeria does not have that problem. Our budget is based on oil revenue, not foreign aid. The budget is calculated on an estimated oil price of roughly $45 per barrel. Although the oil price has dropped below this now, Nigeria still has a lot of money reserve – we are in the top 10 of the world in terms of money reserve. Thus, we have something to fall back on, which means we won’t be hit as hard by the financial crisis as countries that are dependent on foreign aid.
I believe that Nigeria should invest a lot in agriculture at this time – this could help ensure that we weather the recession without sustaining too much damage.

As the global recession is worsening, which African countries do you guys think will suffer the most?
For me I think African counties that heavily dependent on aids are going to be the ones hardest hit, for example Uganda, Kenya, Ghana and South Africa.

PoliticsRe: Nigerians In The Eyes Of The World by beystwin: 4:52pm On Feb 08, 2009
I had a particular experience relating to how people view Nigeria, involving a Pakistani cab driver.
As I stepped into his cab, we exchanged a few standard pleasantries. He then asked me if I am from Nigeria. I asked him "How do you know?" In his own words, he replied "Because you are tall, you look smart and you are very polite." I was surprised at his reply.
Later he asked me about doing business with Nigeria, as he had heard from people of his own nationality that Nigeria is an up-and coming country to do business with. This is when the "Nigerian factor" came into play: most Nigerians, when asked this type of question, will try to dissuade the person asking this question from doing business with Nigeria, and basically rubbish their own country. This is more or less what I did - I told him to be careful of fraudulent business partners. Surprisingly, the cab driver played this down and replied that this danger exists everywhere, including his own country, and that this would not put him off visiting Nigeria.

Most people will say bad things about Nigeria, but deep down they are aware of positive things about Nigeria. It seems to be a trend to put Nigeria down and emphasise fraudulent and criminal activities. Nigerians themselves don't help this matter - they are actually at the forefront of this and actively spoil the image of their own country by saying negative things about it.
