Just adding my 2 cents about life as an F1 student in the US. (Taking into fact that you have no scholarship and you are from an average Nigerian family. You also attend an average school with tuition in the range 18k - 25k per year)

Disadvantages
- Financial burden that can scar you for life
- loneliness
- Constant fear of falling out of status either during studies or after graduation
- Constant fear of dropping out of school due to insufficient funds
- Constant fear of not getting a job after graduation despite the huge debt u've managed to incur
- Discrimination (even Obama can't make this right)
- Depression as a result of all of the above.

Advantages
- Learn from the best minds in the world.
- If you are lucky enough to get a good job after graduation, you can afford to recover all the financial expenses you incurred during school. But the emotional and psychological expenses are probably impossible to recover.
- i'm still looking for more  advantages

Again, I would say stop Stereotyping. There are con men and women in every country. I'm not ashamed to be Nigerian because of the few bad eggs. There are many more Nigerians that are honest, hardworking and responsible citizens who contribute positively to the American society and to the global world.

Just to reiterate what those that came before me have said A town, LaNiger et al. Do not even think of paying for tuition with work you will do as an F1 student in USA. You will drop out faster than a crackhead. Its sad but its true. Only attempt to come here if you have your entire tuition sorted either through scholarship or a rich sponsor. Do not base your decision to study in the USA on what someone experienced say 5 or 10 years ago. The situation on ground is a lot tougher now. One more thing, dont ever come with the intention of securing a scholarship once you arrive, that can be a very costly mistake because if you no get that scholarship, depression is just around the corner. I'm probably sounding like a prophet of doom but I would hate to see anyone experience what I've seen people experience here with no money to fall back on. Depression no be white man disease o. I think most people are mis interpreting the house. If i'm correct it is state property and not the governor's private property. All he is doing is trying to show case the architectural master piece that their State can boast of. Its not personal property built with stolen money. You people need to chill already.

You know, you are right. School and work are not the only reasons I have kept quiet for so long. I actually had some personal issues to resolve which required a lot of attention. I don't wanna go into details on a public forum. But all that is over now and i'm ready to get to know you better smiley

Well, that explains things in a better way. I'm glad that you were able to resolve the issues you had. So now that you are on break from school, what are your plans?

Gosh, its been almost a year. Well what can I say, I guess its nice to have you back on board. Hope your exams went well. Dont you think it's a bit strange that you claimed to be genuinely interested in getting to know me and yet you absconded for close to 12 months. I hope you have a more cogent excuse than school and work for your long silence.

@ Bigboyslim

Sorry for my prolonged silence. I've been busy with school and work, it's been quite stressful but thank God, i'm on break now. How have you been? Hope you've been alright. As much as I wouldn't like to admit this on a public forum, I must confess that I have really missed our conversation. I thought we were making some headway before we were so rudely interrupted by some nairalanders who seem to have a problem with a girl making advances at a guy so openly. Anyways, I hope we can get back in the swing of things and pick up from where we left off. I will be delighted to hear from you.

Travel / Re: Student Jobs In Norway! by bigboyslim(m): 7:01pm On Sep 02, 2009
Can some of the Naija students in Norway shed more light on the country. I heard its the best country to live in the world but that cost of living is also very high. What are average Tuition fees for Foreign Masters students. What jobs can be done to keep up with living expenses. How much do living expenses cost per month if one does not lead an extravagant lifestyle. And what are the prospects for finding a full time job after graduation. Would really appreciate your thoughts on these questions.
Religion / Re: What Apostle Paul Had To Say About Tithes And Other Heretic Teachings by bigboyslim(m): 9:46am On Aug 31, 2009
While I cannot claim to support or disapprove of what Kunle is claiming about tithes, one thing I know for sure is that men have since time immmemorial distorted the truth about the scriptures for various reasons. I think we owe it to ourselves to take out time to continously research the scripture and ask for God's guidance in understanding it. It is not enough that you believe everything your Pastor says for they are also humans and not ultimately incapable of wrong doings. That doesn't also mean you should take everything Kunle says. Do your own research, read the bible, ask God for understanding and at the end of your research if you have the conviction that tithing should continue, then by all means continue it and if you discover otherwise, then you should discontinue it. God has been gracious enough to give us the bible, we should read it and ask for understanding.

Politics / Re: Waziri, 100 EFCC Men Storm Lagos To Arrest Debtors by bigboyslim(m): 4:07pm On Aug 25, 2009
I'm appalled at the way we are quick to rise to the defence of these debtors. Clearly, if you borrow money and you agree to commence repayment within a stipulated period of time, it is only fair that you stick to the agreement. Life is not fair, agreed but if by any stroke of ill-luck or unfortunate circumstances your business does not perform, it is not the duty of the bank to hold night vigils and fasting sessions for you. Business is a risk and it is not the bank's responsibility to manage your business' risk for you. The bank is not a charity organization doling out money to better the lot of the population. The bank is a business entity whose objective is to make profit and remain in business while protecting the interest of their shareholders and depositors. I'm sure if any of these banks are to end up failing these same people would be the ones shouting that why didn't the government step in before it is too late.

I agree with the move by EFCC to start taking over the properties of the debtors if they do not COMMENCE REPAYMENT along the terms of the original contract signed. I've noticed that the average man likes to borrow even when he has no clearly defined means of paying back and if this same attitude is allowed to propagate into a business entity, the end results are not always favorable.

A stitch in time they say saves nine.

Career / Re: After Your Msc Abroad: Stay Or Go? by bigboyslim(m): 3:45pm On Jul 18, 2009
My story is not very different from most of the earlier posters'

I left Nigeria for my Masters in the US in JAN 2007. I have since completed my Masters and still yet to get a job 7 months after. I am also considering going back home seriously because it's really tough surviving in the US without a job. For most that don't know, as international students in the US, u are not legally authorized to accept any off campus employment (excluding internships which are tough to land anyway) and after completion of your degree, you must seek employment in a field relevant to your area of study. These past few years have been the toughest times of my life. Like previous posters have mentioned, going for studies abroad is draining financially, emotionally, mentally and in all other aspects you can think of. I know the story could have been different if not for the economic meltdown but the reality is bitter. Its sad to think that without connections I might have to go back and write aptitude tests again, with 4,000 people competing for a handful of positions.

My advice to prospective Masters candidates particularly those interested in coming to the US is to think deeply about it and find out as much information about the situation of things in the country you intend to study in before proceeding. I think most times, we worry too much about school applications and visa applications and just getting out of Nigeria and push the most crucial aspects to the background. At the end of the day, its a very risky decision you are making. I am not trying to discourage people from following their dreams but I feel that if i'm spending so much on an education I would like to have at least a 90% guarantee of a good job in a field of my choice before or shortly after graduation.

MTN is retarded. I can't count the number of applications i've submitted on their site and i'd like to believe that i'm not a numb skull. I've never been invited for any type of assessment and they never bother to provide any form of feedback on your application. Best of luck to you though. Maybe you will have a different experience with them.
Computers / Re: Windows Vista In Hausa, Igbo And Yoruba by bigboyslim(m): 10:49pm On Jun 05, 2009
To all those claiming we are trying to downgrade our local languages. I love my language but we must also learn to call a spade a spade. The local languages have not evolved with technology since Nigeria hasn't been and is presently not in anyway involved in technological research and development. Hence, the local languages have remained static with no realistic additions. Like an earlier poster pointed out, how would you describe words like device driver, or random access memory or even operating system. It's like trying to build an ERP application with HTML, the language is simply not robust enough to achieve such a feat.

The better approach would be for the language to develop to a level at par with current technology then the exercise would make a lot more sense.
Otherwise, its a no no.
Computers / Re: Windows Vista In Hausa, Igbo And Yoruba by bigboyslim(m): 4:12pm On Jun 05, 2009
I wonder what they hope to achieve with this. I seriously doubt the efficacy of our local languages to handle technical concepts. Also, as long as English remains the national language of instruction in schools, people would generaly feel more comfortable learning in English than in any local language. Just my 2 cents

Never open any link that deals with electronic cash transaction from your mail box.

Worst time to come to america in my humble opinion. And if you really love that girl, you won't bring her to come and suffer with you. My advice is come alone and only if you have enough funds to support yourself for a minimum of 6 months or if you have family you can bunk with for the same duration. There is no quicker way to depression than being broke in america. That is all I can tell you.

Not trying to discourage you or anything. Talking from personal experience
