The outgoing Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Abdullahi Mustapha, yesterday revealed that if Chief MKO Abiola had accepted the bail he granted him in 1994, he would have been alive today. The bail, which was reportedly arranged by the acclaimed strongman of Ibadan politics, the late Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu, was laden with several conditionalities which would have seen Abiola relinquish his claim to the June 12 mandate as well as desist from participate in political activities. Abiola’s lawyer then, Chief GOK Ajayi, said if he had accepted those conditions, he would have become a political vegetable. Abiola died in detention on July 7, 1998. But in his first public remarks, Justice Mustapha, who adjudicated the case in 1994, said if Abiola had accepted the bail granted to him, “he would not have died the way he did”. According to the retiring judge, who was reliving his years at the Bench, “when I released him on bail, they said they never asked for it”. Attributing the moment as the most difficult in his career as there was a lot of negative media report against him over the matter, he said he was grateful to God for being the only surviving judge that handled the June 12 matter. Mustapha, who attributed his becoming a judge to destiny from the then the Attorney-General of Niger State, also blamed tribalism and absence of laid-down procedure in the appointment of judges as one of the major challenges facing the nation. The chief judge, speaking an interactive luncheon with judges, staff and administrative heads of judicial divisions of the Federal High Court, in Lagos, charged the in-coming Chief Judge, Justice Dan Abutu, not to over-use or under-use the powers of the CJ if he wants to succeed since the Federal High Court “represents a mini Nigeria and one family”. He said: “I told the National Judicial Council two weeks ago that I am leaving with a smile. I am also happy that for the first time, judges were being appointed on their merit, with the involvement of sitting Judges so I will feel disappointed if any of the new judges misbehave.” Earlier, the chief registrar, Mr. Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel, extolled the outgoing chief judge for his vision in dealing with the twin issues of tardy and unnecessarily prolonged litigations through the new civil procedure Rules 2009 – as well as superintending over the expansion of the judicial space by inaugurating divisions of the court in Bauchi, Awka, Ekiti, Asaba, Jigawa, Gombe, Zamfara and Lafia. For the representative of the Chief Justice of the Federation, Lady Baby Obodoukwu, “the retiring Chief Judge is a disciplined, resourceful and purposeful judge that sticks on merit and rule of law”. Elderstatesman and father of Governor Bukola Saraki of Kwara State, Dr. Olusola Saraki, has promised to reveal the identity of the person who is going to take over from his son in 2011. Specifically, he told a group of selected journalists at his Abuja home that he would pick the candidate after his return from Umrah in December, 2009. He said he is now praying to God, seeking His divine intervention in this direction: “I have not yet decided on who I will pick as candidate.” He disclosed that there was never a time he thought of making his daughter, Senator Gbemisola Saraki, successor to his son, Bukola: “I heard people saying that I would be giving the ticket to Gbemisola after Bukola but those are rumours, because I have not yet decided.” Saraki said he chose to seek divine intervention because of his past experience: “If you ask me this question after Christmas this year, then I would be definite in letting you know my next candidate for the governorship of Kwara State. But as of today, I do not know who will be the next governor and I leave that to God. I want to go to Umrah and pray to God after fasting to help me because Kwara State has now gone very far. So, we want somebody who would continue and do even more than what Bukola has done. If you go to Kwara State today, you will know what I am talking about. “I am praying to God and I intend to go for the Umrah to seek the guidance of God. When I wanted to put (Mohammed) Lawal (the late governor of Kwara State) there, I went for Umrah for the same purpose since the previous three governors did not perform up to my expectation. “I went to Umrah and sought forgiveness and true guidance. I prayed to God that I wanted somebody who would take care of Kwara State for me. I went to Umrah and I called Mallams to join me and together, we prayed to God. Lawal was among us, praying and he was saying (as I later gathered) God, ‘make me the one to give this Saraki man what he wanted for Kwara State.” He confessed that he almost did not give the ticket to Lawal: “When it became obvious that he would get the ticket, I complained to my faithful that I didn’t want any person with military background to be the Governor of Kwara State. I set-up a seven-man screening committee. They screened all the aspirants. “I was worried that Lawal had got the highest mark. But I said, perhaps God wanted to use this man for the development of Kwara State. I could have changed the result if I had wanted to do so, but I told them to release the result and Lawal became the governorship candidate. “After only one year in office, he began to agitate for a second term, convincing himself that I was going to make my son, Bukola, the governor. But I told him that Bukola was never a politician and that he never for once interfered in the political situation of Kwara State. But Lawal never believed me.” |
Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Hon. Taofik Olawale Abdusalam, yesterday told journalists about how he was physically assaulted by a band of political hoodlums, last weekend, in Akure, Ondo State capital while monitoring the monthly environmental exercise. Olawale said his official car was damaged because he resisted the orders of the suspected thugs allegedly on the entourage of the Caretaker Chairman of Akure South local council, Tayo Oluwatuyi, and a member of the State Executive Council, Kunle Asaolu, who also hails from the state capital. However, both the Chairman and the Commissioner denied that they were involved in any attack on the Speaker with the former claiming. "I never ordered anyone to harass anybody nor did I go through Arakale during the environmental exercise," adding " It is not in my character to do such things or be unruly." The attack on Olawale, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who heads the PDP-controlled state parliament by suspected thugs revealed the level of the already frosty relationship between the two major parties in the state. Olawale said he was stopped by the gang of hoodlums allegedly on the entourage of the two state officials at the Odi-Olowo junction of Arakale road in the state capital around 9 a.m on Saturday and asked to identify himself and state the reason why he had to be moving around during restriction hours. He said although he identified himself and told them that he was on a mission to monitor the exercise, "the gang still insisted that I should get out of the car to show respect to the 'kings of the road'." According to Olawale, "the mentioning of my names and positions further infuriated the thugs who started calling me all sorts of unprintable names and vowing to deal with me for causing problems for the Labour Party (LP) government while banging the car furiously." The speaker, who said the matter would be tabled before the plenary session of the House when it resumes next week, added that he was surprised that the two officials walked away when the hoodlums were harassing him. About 87 parents have so far been apprehended by officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) for carrying under -aged children in the front seats of their vehicle. This was disclaosed by the FRSC FCT Sector Commander, Nseobong Akpabio, who said the parents were arrested within the past three weeks. He said those arrested claimed that their children will cry if they are kept on the back seats, adding that their reasons are unacceptable. Akpabio warned that no parent should drive with his child on the front seat or on his laps. He said the Commission has embarked on road searches tagged ‘Operation Sanity’, which involves identifying and punishing parents driving with children on their front seat. “This is not an acceptable excuse for any reasonable parent or guardian to offer in the face of glaring violations which has 95% possibility of leading to death and we are going to prosecute parents’ violators to serve as deterrents to others,” he added. Akpabio informed that vehicles not properly parked or abandoned on the road will be removed and impounded by the omission, stating that in the last two months over 271 abandoned vehicles of various categories were removed from the roads. He said from the month of May till date, 491 people were arrested and arraigned for 620 traffic offences, of which 463 were convicted by a mobile court presided over by Magistrate Emmanuel Iyana. The sector commander disclosed that Alcolizer machine is being used by the FRSC officials to determine the alcohol level in the blood of drivers. “One Raphael Oko found driving under the influence of alcohol has been jailed for three weeks and must undergo psychiatric test in a government hospital as well as present the result to the court before undergoing a driving safety enlightenment programme at FRSC (FCT) Command. If he is cleared by the FRSC, he will then pay N57,000 fine before the final clearance by the court is giving,” Akpabio said. Nigeriannews.com |
A young man who gave his name as David Ojo-Maduekwe and claimed to be the son of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Ojo Maduekwe , has been apprehended by police in Maiduguri , Borno State for impersonation and attempt to swindle unsuspecting members of the public. The culprit, who on interrogation, confessed that he is Marvelous Michael and hails from Abi Local Government Area of Cross River state, said he was lured into faking as the minister’s son by one 50-year-old Ambrose Alozie who is now on the run. Luck ran out of the 25-year-old impostor when he went to the GRA police station in Maiduguri to lay a complaint that he had been robbed of his car, a Mercedes M-class 500 Jeep and some of his personal belonging by some group of robbers in broad day light along the University of Maiduguri road. The state commissioner of police, Chris Dega, who paraded the fake son of the Minister at the state’s force headquarters, said the young man actually claimed that his car which was given to him by his acclaimed minister father was snatched at gun point He said on hearing his story, the police command immediately referred it to the state headquarters for proper attention, but during the course of investigation, the lad ran out of ideas as he began to contradict himself. The police commissioner revealed that the man's accomplice who is now on the run continually phoned and posed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and asked the police commissioner to do everything possible to assist and take care of his ‘son’ while in Maiduguri Dega said: “David Ojo-Maduekwe went to the GRA police station to report that he arrived Maiduguri in his Mercedes M-class jeep given to him by his father, the minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, that his name is David Ojo-Maduekwe.” He said that he travelled to Maiduguri to visit a friend and while driving along the University road, a group of robbers driving in a Volkswagen Golf car double-crossed him at a gun-point and forced him out of the car and made away with it and his personal belongings as well as the police orderly attached to him”. The CP also revealed that the impostor was taken to Abuja where the personal aides of the minister identified him, saying he was none of the minister’s sons or family members. Talking to newsmen later at the state police command headquarters, Marvellous Michael, alias David Ojo-Maduekwe, said he regretted his action and claimed that he was a first-offender. “I am a student of the University of Abuja , a 300-level Business Administration student. I was actually deceived into this bad crime by one Ambrose Alozie who is currently running a masters degree programme in University of Abuja . He said we should come here and carry out this plot on the ground that Borno politicians are very generous and when they hear the name of the minister of foreign affairs, they will sympathise with me. I am really ashamed of myself and I have learnt my lessons. My parents are aware of my situation and have said they did not send me on such kind of criminal act," he confessed. The Ogun State Election Petition Tribunal yesterday heard that Governor Gbenga Daniel voted twice during the April, 2007 governorship election. Counsel to All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) governorship candidate Ibikunle Amosun, Mr. Adeniyi Akintola (SAN), told the tribunal that Daniel’s name was on two separate voters’ registers and that votes were equally recorded against his name on both lists. Amosun is challenging Daniel’s election at the tribunal. Akintola said Daniel voted twice in his home town, Sagamu, adding that the double voting could be seen on page two of Exhibit 1936 and page 10 of Exhibit 1940, where Gbenga Daniel’s name appeared twice and votes equally recorded in both instances. He revealed the alleged irregularities when cross-examining one of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) witnesses, Mr. Abiodun Odunsanya, who said the election, was violence-free. Attempt by Akintola to present the two ballot papers allegedly bearing Daniel’s thumb-prints to Odunsanya was objected by the governor’s counsel, Mr. Tayo Oyetibo (SAN). But counsel to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mr. Olayode Delano, pressed for the papers’ acceptance. He said: "The fact that the papers are not pleaded is not a barrier to their acceptance. Since they are relevant, the law permits the tribunal to use its discretion. the nation. |
A person’s path in life may be constantly subjected to different circumstances. But one can occasionally exert some influence over some of these circumstances. There are some of them one cannot however, control, thereby leaving someone helplessly at their mercy. This is the kind of situation Ebuka Odebapu currently finds himself in. The young man’s dream has always been to become a mechanical engineer. And at just 16, no one can begrudge him the right to such dream, becoming an engineer of whatever kind is the least he can dream of at his age. After all, his father is one, and he only wants to take after his father. But circumstances he has absolutely no control over, are now poised to determine if and how soon he will be able to start realizing this ambition. His ordeal started around 8a.m, on Tuesday, July 7, after an encounter between him and a bus conductor ended in fatality. The young man, who is the second in a family of four, was living with his uncle in Kirikiri Industrial Area of the state. On the fateful day, he had boarded a bus from Mazamaza on his way to his uncle’s petrol station, where he assisted as a petrol attendant. The suspect said he sat in the front seat of the bus, but that because the seat did not feel comfortable for him to sit in, he decided to move to one of the seats in the second row. As he did so, Odebapu said the bus conductor, who was identified as Emmanuel Chinwe, pushed one of the chairs, trapping Odebapu’s hand between two seats in the process. In His words: “I asked him to carry the seat, but he did not listen to me, as he just went about his businesses. As a result, I sustained wounds on my hand. When I queried him further, he just shoved me aside. By the time the bus was approaching Volks Bus Stop, I pushed him in anger and he fell out of the moving car. Chinwe was reported to have sustained head injuries in addition to bruises, in the process. He was quickly rushed to a nearby private hospital, Church Medical Centre, where he was immediately placed on treatment. However, a further tragic twist to the tale occurred when, early on Thursday morning, the victim reportedly died from the head injuries he sustained from the Tuesday incident. The victim, meanwhile had all along been in police custody in Kirikiri. The case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, for further investigation. Odebapu, the second child in a family of four from Anambra State, is a student of Dr. Lucas High School, Mazamaza, and had taken part in the Junior Secondary Certificate Examination only two months ago. Ebuka expressed regrets for his actions that led to the death of the deceased, saying: “I pushed him because he earlier pushed me. I didn’t mean to push him out of the bus. The young man also bemoaned the fact that his current ordeal would now cast some shadow over his lifelong ambition of becoming a mechanical engineer like his father. But how soon and to what extent he can fulfill that ambition will now surely be affected by how soon the police can conclude their investigations and what kind of verdict the court passes on the case. compassnews.net |
A man who was officially attached to the residence of Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido has been arrested for stealing from the governor’s bed room. The incident, sources hinted the Daily Trust, occurred Saturday night. The suspect was said to have been caught by one Alhji Nuhu, a government official attached to the governor’s residence after he (the suspect) succeeded in completing the act. Confirming the incident, the governor’s Director of Press, Alhaji Muhammad Sani Jibril said the person involved was in security net, adding; “I don’t know whether the guy is an official or civil servant”. Muhammad Sani Jibril said only an investigation could reveal the true picture of the case. The suspect is currently under investigation by SSS officials at the SSS Command in Jigawa. Though the governor’s spokesman did not disclose what the suspect stole, sources at the Government House hinted that it may not be unconnected with money. Following the development, security was beefed up as the stop and search method has been adopted by the security men at the gate. Additional mobile policemen were deployed to the State House. In a related development, two drivers attached to the Jigawa State House were equally arrested by the police following their involvement in the stealing of diesel meant for running government vehicles and power generating sets. Investigations by our reporter indicated that the suspects were in police net. When contacted, the police public relations officer, Abdul Jinjiri said he was not briefed on the issue. dailytrust |
Palpable fear has enveloped the monitoring unit of the Oyo State Police Command as the investigating police officer (IPO) in charge of the murder case leveled against the detained strongman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Lateef Akinsola (aka Tokyo), slumped in office and died. Gboyega Kareem, 45, was said to have reported at the office on Monday hail and healthy only to slump around 12noon while discussing with another police officer in front of the monitoring office, inside the Police Headquarters, Eleyele. He was said to have given up the ghost before he could be attended to at the command’s clinic where he was rushed to for medical attention. The incident has sent shock into other officers of the unit as they feared that his sudden death may not be unconnected with the Tokyo’s case he was handling. “He was not sick. In fact, we were all in the office chatting and discussion when he stepped outside to give O/C his newspapers when he suddenly slumped. We tried to rush him to the hospital but he died before he could be attended to,” one of the bereaved officers told Daily Sun. A native of Kwara State, Kareem was said to have been relatively new as he joined the police force in 2004. His wife and children were said to be residing in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State. When Daily Sun made efforts to talk to other colleagues of Kareem who used to accompany him to the court since Tokyo’s trial, with four others, commenced about three weeks ago, cries of bereaved women were overheard in the background while the call was not picked. Efforts to get the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Miss Olabisi Okuwobi, to confirm the incident also proved abortive as her mobile phones were, unusually, not accessible. Tokyo was arrested June 6, 2009 over gunmen invasion of the home of his estranged deputy, Alhaji Lateef Salako (aka Elewe-Omo), who is now the chairman of the NURTW in the state. Elewe-Omo’s two security aides were killed during the attack while his two children sustained gunshot injuries. On June 23, Tokyo, along with four others, were brought to court on a six count charge of murder and conspiracy. At the resumed sitting of the court on the case on July 9, the five accused persons were asked to be remanded in police custody by the presiding judge, Magistrate A. S. Bolaji. SUNNEWSONLINE. |

SUSPECTED kidnappers, who abducted the wife of a patient medicine dealer in Ovwian, Udu Local Government Area of Delta State at the weekend, have asked the victim's husband for N6,000 recharge cards to enable them discuss the terms of releasing her. Mrs. Joyce Okpare, who was seized at Orhowhorun junction, near the entrance to her home, was, however, yet to be released, days after her husband sent the recharge cards as demanded. The woman was allegedly approached by her abductors, who commandeered her into a waiting vehicle and zoomed off. However, the Urhobo Monitoring and Development Group (UMDU), yesterday gave the kidnapper a 72-hour ultimatum to release the woman. UMDU, in a statement by its Chairman and Secretary, Andrew Gbise and James Ovedje respectively, warned "those responsible for the shameful and cowardly act to release Mrs. Joyce Okpare within 72 hours, or face the wrath of the association." It also condemned the ugly incident in its totality, The group, while warning the kidnappers to stay clear of Udu area, disclosed that Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, the Police Commissioner, the State Security Service (SSS) and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Ovwian Police Station, have been alerted on the incident. |
TWO councillors, yesterday, sustained serious injuries in Ugwolawo, headquarters of Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State as heavy fighting broke out among the legislators over alleged moves to impeach the chairman of the council. Peters Enejo seeking to remove him from office over what they described as his “woeful performance in the last two years as chief executive of the council”. The impeachment notice signed by two third of members of the council also alleged that the chairman had failed to tell them the correct monthly allocations accruable to the council since he took over the mantle of leadership in the area. They also accused him of high-handedness and abuse of office as he allegedly dips his hands into the council’s purse without recourse to the legislators, allegations which he denied as baseless and unfounded. There was, however, a twist in the crisis as some of the legislators, yesterday, opted out of the decision feigning ignorance of the alleged impeachment moves, a development that infuriated some of the legislators leading to a free-for-all. ![]() http://www.vanguardngr.com/2009/07/13/councillors-exchange-blows-over-impeachment-move/ |

Nigerian international, Obafemi Martins, may start the 2009/2010 season in the Championship league on a shaky note, as he would not be with his teammates during their first preseason match against Shamrock Rovers this weekend. Newcastle United caretaker manager, Chris Hughton, ruled out the Eagles striker who was recuperating from a summer surgery from the clash against the Dublin side after failing a last minute fitness test. While disclosing that Martins is expected to sit out the game, having undergone an operation to cure a niggling groin problem, Hughton noted: "Possibly the only one who won't be involved will be Oba, although he is training. His programme's a bit different to everybody else's because of summer surgery. We'll discuss it with the physio, but he's one at this moment that won't be involved. Hughton, who took his players to Ireland last weekend for an intensive training camp, which has seen them train three times a day, admitted his overriding concern is avoiding injury at the Tallaght Stadium. "I plan to use all the players that are here. I won't be looking to play anyone for 90 minutes. My main concern is not so much the performance, but getting through the 90 minutes with no injuries. Each individual player's got to get something out of the game. "If we have no injuries, we'll be halfway there. Training's gone well. There have been no real problems. We're looking forward to the game now, and hopefully, coming back with no injuries," he added. |
