PoliticsRe: Buhari Was Stoned In Bayelsa, Says Governor Dickson by billyG(m): 1:13am On Jan 06, 2016
NgeneUkwenu:
Seriake Dickson, governor of Bayelsa state, on Monday said President Muhammadu Buhari was stoned in 2011 when he visited the state as the presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).

Incidentally, Timipre Sylva, Dickson’s rival and candidate of the APC in the state governorship election, was the governor of Bayelsa at the time.

Addressing a press conference in Yenagoa, capital of the state, Dickson said he ensured that Buhari was secure during his visit to Bayelsa as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). “President Buhari, when he came to campaign as CPC candidate, was stoned,” he said. “But I granted state stadium to president Buhari, and made adequate security for his safety when he came to campaign again, because I knew that these people could harm him or people in his entourage and I didn’t want that to happen.”

Dickson also accused one of Buhari’s ministers, apparently Heineken Lokpobiri, of “terrorising” people of the state ahead of Saturday rerun election. The election, which held across the state on December 8, was rescheduled to January 9 in Southern Ijaw local government area and over 100 polling units in other local government areas, as a result of violence.

But Dickson placed the disturbances at the doorstep of his opponents, saying he remains a man of peace. He alleged that there were plans to rig Saturday election in favour of Sylva and called on the people to defend their votes. Dickson accused Sylva of using his influence to change the head of security agencies in the state in order to perfect his plot. “I’m the proponent of political tolerance in this state,” he said. “I don’t need anybody to kill and maim for me, I’m a man of peace and everybody knows. What we have seen is a subversion of our national security agencies. “The minister sent thugs to attack the collation centre, put off the community generator, storm the collation centre, took away the original ward result sheets, and also prevented the collation officers from completing their collations.

“In my own community, we had APC people who wanted to open an office, I told the commissioner of police to protect them, they must hang that flag – it’s their right. Nobody was assaulted. “Unlike Ekeremor, where a man who is not even candidate looks down on his community so much, thinks they’re his slaves and says ‘you will not vote’. Not even for his party, ‘you will not vote at all’. “I got copied a letter written by the CDC chairman of Ekeremor community, the minister’s community, where it is directed to the president. Drawing the president’s attention to what the minister is doing, terrorising the community with soldiers and police and SSS and so on. So that nobody would go there to vote. “Himself, his younger ones are all carrying arms.

As the CSO, I’m alive to my responsibilities in this state. “This idea of changing people anytime they don’t do the wishes of a person or party – you’re destroying institutions. This is the third time they have changed the commissioner of police in Bayelsa, since this race started. “They brought in Paul Okafor, brought in Nasir Oki, nominated by Timipre Sylva, now I hear Timipre Sylva says the man they brought here as commissioner of police didn’t do his bidding by killing enough people, didn’t do his bidding by arresting innocent party supporters and those who are not supporting him. “I hear that by today or tomorrow, the new commissioner of police, nominated by him and his party would arrive here.

They are celebrating victory of evil over good, victory of criminality over legality. “This election has been won, they are only desperate and day dreaming, they are trying to get from the backdoor, what they couldn’t get from the front door.

All the votes from Southern Ijaw are for me. “I have raised some of these issues even with the president. Critical issues of national securities. I believe Mr President assurances. Mr President was very gracious, I am grateful to him for granting me audience. I have his assurances that things would happen differently

IlajeGal1:
Following the arrest of the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) , Chief Olisa Metuh, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the party's national leadership has demanded his immediate release. This was contained in a statement by Prof. Adewale Oladipo, the National Secretary of the party.

Read statement below:

This development, which did not come to us as a surprise given series of threats to our party’s spokesman by the APC and the Federal Government, who are obviously not comfortable with our stance on the confused state of the nation under their watch, is a continuation of APC’s grand design to silence and decimate the PDP.

The arrest of Chief Metuh today underscores the growing political intolerance in our country and the foisting of a police state which was last Wednesday underscored by the President and Commander-in-Chief himself, who defended why a government in a democracy should flout constitutional provision and brazenly disobey court orders.

This onslaught against our spokesman, according to intelligence available to us is part of a larger script by the government to ensure that PDP wings are finally clipped in their mission to install a dictatorial one-party state in the country.

The excesses of security agencies under this government, especially the Directorate of Security Services (DSS) and the EFCC, in abridging the human rights of PDP members have become worrisome and a threat to our democratic evolution.

Nigerians and the international community will recall that on a number of occasions, the PDP, through its spokesman has been outspoken on some undemocratic proclivities being exhibited by the APC-led Federal Government in the last seven months.

The PDP insists that for whatever reason Chief Metuh was arrested, his rights as a citizen under the law must not be trampled upon. We therefore demand for his immediate release and that due process of investigation and prosecution concerning him should be strictly adhered to.

We state this because we have been made aware of top directives to break Chief Metuh and if possible poison him during his detention by the EFCC. Chief Metuh, has since his arrest at about 10 am, has been kept incommunicado, with his lawyers denied access to him.

The PDP declares the arrest of our spokesman as the last straw that may break our democracy. We therefore forewarn the Federal Government and its agencies to save our democracy and forthwith release our National Publicity Secretary.

We are also calling on the international community and well-meaning Nigerians to stand up for this democracy, which our party nurtured for 16 years and deepened to a level where the opposition, for the first time in our political history, had the opportunity to win in a general election.

PoliticsRe: Buhari Bows To Outrage, Orders Reduction Of Presidency’s N19bn Budget. by billyG(m): 12:47am On Jan 06, 2016
cowgirl9090:
Following the outrage which had trailed the
billions of Naira allocated to the Presidency in the 2016 Budget,President Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly ordered for a downward review of the budget.
DAILY POST gathered on Tuesday that the
president was angered at the bashing he was receiving over the billions allocated to his office, that of his vice, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, as well as Aso Rock as a whole.
Details provided by Nigeria’s budget office shows that the presidency got N19billion.
DAILY POST had published the breakdown of
2016 budget
about a week ago. http://dailypost.ng/
2015/12/26/2016 -
budget-breakdown-of-sums-allocated-to-preside
ncy-mdas-
others/
Further details on the presidential budget are as
follows:
State House headquarters – N12billion;
President’s
operations – N1.9billion; Vice President’s
operations –
N322million; Chief of Staff – N2.3million; Chief
Security
Officer – N3.2million; Lagos liaison office –
N127million;
State House medical centre – N3.9billion;
Feeding
N445million.
Most of the figures are higher to allocations
budgeted for same departments in recent years under President Goodluck Jonathan.
Our correspondent gathered that despite
denials by presidential aides, Buhari has ordered that the allocation to the presidency be reduced.
Reacting, Buhari’s His Special Assistant on
Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu had on Monday
admitted that some figures in the budget were new.
“Some of these figures being quoted are strange to us.” Shehu stated.
According to him, the Ministry of Budget and
Planning have been instructed to look through the figures. Shehu advised the media to exercise patience until the federal legislature gets the details of the budget.
“When the National Assembly returns from
recess, the lawmakers will be given the full estimates of the budget, including what is voted for each department, ministries and
agencies. What is voted for the State House will
also be included,” Shehu said.
A government official however confided in
DAILY POST that
the Budget Ministry had received presidential
directive to slash the N19billion budget.
“The president became alarmed when his
attention wto called to the fact that the figures were higher to that of his predecessor, whom he criticised. He also demanded explanation on some of the allocations in view of the economic crisis.
“Expect a reduced figure. I can’t speculate by
how much, but things not really necessary will either be slashed or outrightly expunged,” he told our correspondent at an event in Lagos on Tuesday.
Buhari had on December 22, 2015 presented a
Budget estimate of N6.08 trillion to a joint sitting of the National Assembly.
Some parts of the budget have attracted
criticisms from many Nigerians, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and even members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

•President’s no-release stand splits lawyers

By Chris Iwarah

Former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki, yesterday pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to allow him enjoy the bail granted him by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Meanwhile, lawyers yesterday took divergent positions on Buhari’s explanation of the continued detention of former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki and pro-Biafra agitator, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu despite different court orders admitting them to bail.

Buhari said during his first presidential media chat on Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) on Wednesday that Dasuki and Kanu could not be released because they would jump bail, describing the charges against them as serious.

Speaking with Daily Sun on the development yesterday, counsel to Dasuki, Alhaji Ahmed Raji (SAN), said: “I would want to appeal to Mr. President to please allow my client to enjoy the bail that was granted to him. I want to beg him in the name of God. I cannot join words with the president. I have the greatest respect for him, both in his official and personal capacities. My appeal is just that I am begging him in the name of God to allow my client to enjoy his bail.”

But former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Prince Lanke Odogiyan said Buhari’s stand was a manifestation of dictatorship.
The president’s refusal to release Dasuki and Kanu, he warned, was a slide into lawlessness. He urged the NBA, human rights organisations and other non-governmental groups to call the president to order to prevent the nation from sliding into anarchy.

His words: “It’s disobedience of court order and if it’s not checked, it can lead to consequences beyond our imaginations. It’s a manifestation of dictatorial tendencies and it should not be encouraged. The president must be advised by his legal handlers. If he is not satisfied with an order of court, the appropriate thing to do is to appeal. But he can’t disobey it, he can’t ignore it.

“The Nigerian Bar Association, NGOs and human rights bodies will speak with one voice to call Mr. President to order. We have to be careful so that we don’t slide into anarchy. No government should pick and choose what orders to obey.”

Chief Ladi Rotimi-Williams (SAN), however, said the president was acting in the overall interest of the nation.
“The president is at a vantage point to know what is good for the nation at any given time. Sambo Dasuki is a very powerful man and you don’t take such powerful men lightly.

“I am sure he (Buhari) has placed the interest of the nation over and above the interest of Sambo Dasuki, ditto for Kanu. He is not doing so because he doesn’t like their faces.”
The interest of the nation overrides everything else.”

President of the African Bar Association, Mr. Hannibal Uwaifo also insisted that Buhari was on the right path.
He said it was sentimental to claim that Buhari was the one responsible for the continued detention of Dasuki and Kanu. The detainees, he said, were contending with the consequences of infringing the nation’s laws.

Former Chairman of the Ikeja branch of NBA, Mr. Monday Ubani, however, said Buhari’s comments might have been misunderstood.
He said: “Whatever the president has said, he can’t play the roles of the legislature, executive, and the judiciary. The judiciary will certainly handle the cases that are before it. The president can only execute what the judiciary has said. So, I don’t want whatever the president has said to be taken out of proportion.

What I understand the president to be saying actually, which he may not have put in a way that every person would understand, is that we can’t allow a system where prominent people alleged to have committed heinous crimes are given all manner of luxuries after they have put a lot of people in problem and they can’t stay here and answer the charges; they now want to go abroad for treatment while this same thing is not extended to the poor.”

Christianity EtcRe: HURIWA To Drag Mbaka To Vatican Over Prophesy On Buhari by billyG(m): 7:14pm On Jan 03, 2016
Trut:
A pro-Democracy Non-governmental organisation, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, has dismissed Reverend Father Ejike Mbaka’s “prophesy” of an assassination attempt on President Muhammadu Buhari by corrupt politicians.

HURIWA described it as sensational and rumour peddling.

The group said the prophesy therefore should be seen for what it truly is: delusional fantasy.

Mbaka, the Head of the Adoration Ministries, based in Enugu, Enugu State, had in his New Year message said some corrupt politicians were after Buhari.

Against the backdrop of the prophesy, HURIWA asked the Nigerian Catholic hierarchy to sanction Mbaka for abandoning his sacred vocation and deviating into the profane and mundane roadside career of high wire politics hiding under the canopy of his Catholic’s Priestly vocation.

The Rights group said it has resolved to drag Mbaka to Pope Francis if within 21 days the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria fails to reprimand him and stop him from associating actively and notoriously with politicians at both national and regional levels.

HURIWA accused the Catholic priest of engaging in cheap and childish rumour mongering and sophistry.

It said said the Catholic Church’s leadership must call him to order because he has become a political loose canon who can’t separate sermons from partisan politics.

HURIWA said Mbaka’s prophesy lacks scientific and empirical evidence and smacks of sensationalism and therefore qualifies as an unmitigated emotional fallacy and a misdirected outburst, which should be disregarded.

In a statement signed jointly by the National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, and the National Media Affairs Director, Zainab Yusuf, HURIWA said Mbaka should cover his face in shame for displaying gross ignorance of the workings of the democratic and law based tenets and provisions of the constitution, which deems suspects brought before the court of competent jurisdiction as totally innocent in the eye of the law until contrary determination is made by the Court in line with due process of the law.

The statement said: “Fr Mbaka is putting his priestly calling and office to the pecuniary services of the All Progressives Congress of President Buhari because it is barely two weeks he was photographed smiling with his Political host in the Presidential mansion President Muhammadu Buhari that he emerged from his delusional hibernation to manufacture cock-and -bull story about some plots to assassinate Mr President by corrupt politicians.”

Dismissing the prophesy as delusional and empty, the Rights group added: “Is Fr Mbaka a judge who has passed presiding over cases of alleged graft involving any immediate past political office holder and adjudged them guilty of corrupt practices? Is Fr Mbaka unaware that as the Commander-In-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces that President Muhammadu Buhari is the most protected citizen in Nigeria now with hundreds of well armed and highly trained professional guards drawn from the Nigerian Military and the Secret Police headed by President Muhammadu Buhari’s Kinsman? Is Fr Mbaka unaware that Nigeria under President Muhammadu Buhari is waging a counter terror war and that the armed Islamists have vowed in several media recordings to kill not just the Commander in chief but officials of government? This MBAKA’S whitewash must be consigned to the dustbins without further delay.”

CrimeRe: NNPC Depot CSO Hired Us To Vandalise Pipelines – Suspects by billyG(m): 1:16pm On Jan 02, 2016
Jazzlite:
Police recover guns in CSO’s office

By Evelyn Usman

Three suspected pipeline vandals arrested in Ilashe area of Ogun state last month by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Anti-Pipeline Vandalism Unit have confessed that they were hired by a Chief Security Officer at a depot in Mosimi area of Ogun state. The suspects ; Balogun Taiwo(37), Lukemon Adedigba (45) and Dayo Olanipekun (40) were alleged to have been returning from the creeks through Ilashe link , in two vehicles loaded with siphoned petroleum products belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation pipelines.
Suspected vandals

Suspected vandals

However, on sighting the operatives, said to have acted on tip off, the vandals scampered in different directions, abandoning the vehicles and containers loaded with petroleum product. It was gathered that while the operatives were towing the vehicles to their base , they were attacked by some armed vandals who opened fire .

A reinforcement from the Special Anti Robbery Sqaud, SARS Ogijo, reportedly saved the situation from resulting into the apparent kidnap or killing of some of the policemen. At the end of the shoot -out , three suspects were arrested, with a double barrel riffle while the rest escaped. .

During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed that they were allegedly hired by a CSO at the Mosimi depot (names withheld) . Police sources hinted that in order to ascertain their claim, a letter was written to the NNPC to release the said CSO for interrogation . Thereafter , a warrant of arrest was reportedly obtained from the court to effect the arrest of the CSO.

Mild drama

However, a mild drama unfolded when the operatives arrived MOSIMI depot to effect the arrest of the CSO, following alleged stiff resistance by some staff. Sources at the IGP Anti-Pipeline Vandalism Unit hinted that “ We went with the warrant of arrest and a search warrant to Mosimi depot. When a search was conducted at the CSO’s office, three locally made guns were recovered. When we tried to arrest him, one of the staff raised a fire alarm and all the workers assembled and barricaded all the roads, insisting that we would not take him away.

One of the officers who tried to make the exit with the three recovered riffles was held hostage and dispossessed of the guns. The workers threatened to shut the station if he was taken away. To douse the situation, we allowed him to go. Till this moment, the Corporation is yet to release the CSO for investigation”.

CSO’s appeal text to Police

While the wait for the CSO lasted, he was said to have sent an appeal text message to one of the operatives of the Unit.

Part of the text read “ Please, I beg you in the name of God ,to kindly tamper justice with mercy. I made a mistake . That will never happen again. Kindly help to bail me out of this. I am very sorry. God will grant you favour in all your endeavours…”.

We were hired by CSO

However during an interview with Crime Guard the suspects denied indulging in pipeline vandalisation. Rather , they claimed to have been hired by the CSO to carry out surveillance of the area which is used as an exit route through Arepo creeks by vandals. One of them, Balogun Taiwo , who hails from Sango Otta, Ogun State told Crime Guard that “ On November 22, 2015, I was sleeping in my apartment in Shagamu, when my phone rang.

The caller was a friend named Semiu. He informed that the CSO Mosimi said we ( Lukemon, Dayo and I )should come over, that vandals were operating around the area. He said he needed us to arrest them . I woke up immediately and mounted my motorbike. I rode to a place where Dayo and Lukemon were waiting. We met Semiu at the entrance of the NNPC gate . The guards at the gate demanded to know what we were doing at that odd hour (1. 40am ) .

As we were about to explain to them that the CSO sent for us, he (CSO) appeared and directed them to give Semiu keys to their patrol vehicle. We entered the vehicle and zoomed off , leaving my motorbike in the premises. On reaching Ilara road, we saw two vehicles and two okadas (motorcycles ) approaching from the opposite direction . Suspecting they were vandals, Semiu intercepted the vehicles, shooting sporadically. This made the occupants to flee, abandoning the vehicles. We took the vehicles and okada. Semiu then called the CSO on the phone to inform him of the development.

He asked us to remain there till dawn. While we were there , we saw another vehicle moving out of the bush . We gave them a hot pursuit which caused its occupants to flee. We discovered they had loaded their abandoned vehicles with jerricans filled with petroleum products.

Altercation

At about 4am, we saw another vanagon bus leaving the bush , we chased it and the occupants fled as well. As we were about calling the CSO, Anti pipeline policemen arrived the scene. They identified us as those who opened fire on them earlier. They followed us with the recovered vehicles and exhibits to the depot. When the CSO came to meet us at the gate, he directed that the recovered vehicles and petroleum products be kept in the premises. But the Police said it should be taken to the station . This led to an altercation , in the process of which the police towed two of the vehicles away and arrested us.

“We are not vandals. I have never been to the creeks before. This is the second time I am joining them for such surveillance. It was Semiu that invited me the first time. Semiu works for the CSO. He only contracted us to work for him . He has not even paid us . It was only Semiu that was armed. The rest of us were just with torch-lights”.

Lukemon and Dayo corroborated Taiwo’s claim, adding however that they were only given N1000 each before they embarked on the ill fated trip. Effort to reach Head, Public Affairs, Petroleum Product Marketing Company, PPMC Nasir Imodagbe , on the alleged indictment of the CSO failed as he requested this reporter to send him a text. But he never replied the text as at time of writing this report . Meanwhile, when contacted, the head, IGP Anti -Pipeline Vandalism Unit, Mr Valentine Olumese, a Chief Superintendent of Police , told Vanguard that the CSO was still being expected to clear himself of the allegation

PoliticsRe: North Will Reject Buhari, APC In 2019 —iwuanyanwu by billyG(m): 2:15pm On Dec 28, 2015
simpleseyi:
CHIEF Chyna Iwuanyanwu, former aspirant for the position of national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) in this interview expresses confidence that his party would regain lost grounds in 2019, once it restores zoning principle which was observed in the breach in the last two general elections.

‘’Most of the Northern elites who are elite, who belong to the aristocratic class, they are scared about the despotism that is going on now, but they just wanted power to come to the north. Power has come to the North but this isn’t the power they are looking for!’’

Excerpts:

There is apprehension in the air over the ongoing investigation of alleged diversion of funds meant for arm purchase into PDP Presidential campaign funds. What is your take on this unsavoury development?

Well, you know that this government came to power under the mantra of change and anti-corruption. So, they were just playing to the emotions of the country, just playing to the gallery. The moment you tell a poor man that you are going to bring a big man down, he is very happy and expectant. So, it is natural, pulling down syndrome is what they are catching on, they know the mood of the nation. Because as far as I am concerned, yes the PDP has clearly stated its position, we are totally for the anti-corruption drive of the government, but it mustn’t be politicized, it mustn’t be vindictive, it mustn’t be selective. It must be holistic and the first question I am asking is, when did it start? Did corruption start with Jonathan, or did it start even with PDP in 1999? What about the whole lot of things that were done under military regimes. So, the question is, where do we begin, and why do you begin, where you are beginning? That’s number one.

The other one is that there are certain elements that are coming out now that are very dangerous to this nation. In the history of this country, security votes as the name connotes, can be used to advance any cause for the stability of this country, stability of government.

So, any government has a right to apply it to create stability.

Never in the history of this country has security votes been probed.

Why are we probing the security votes?

You see, to my understanding, it can be used for native doctors, it can be used for Muslim clerics, churches to pray for the country, they can be used for even sponsoring candidates for Nigerian Labour Congress, (NLC) elections! If NLC, is doing elections today, in the past as it sued to be the government can have interest and say, this is where we are going and there is no receipt, no accountability.

It isn’t an open and transparent thing. I am shocked that a man, who was a former president and operated security votes could now be throwing up this. But corruption is still corruption; wherever we establish it, the position of most of us is, yes naturally a government that has been in power for 16 years naturally some of us, mind you, there are no angels anywhere.

Some of us might have put our hands in one or two untidy deals, but some of the people close to Buhari needs to be asked questions, how did you get the money which you used to fund his presidential election? A state governor, what business were you doing before then? We know they have humongous money . There are allegations even in their states about diversion of money and we cannot ignore all of that, we cannot sweep it under the carpet and then come and be chasing perceived enemies. The president is a president of Nigeria, not a president of APC, not a president of PDP, witch-hunting will not help us, it will destroy the integrity and credibility of the anti-corruption crusade.

Another issue is the respect for rule of law and fundamental rights of citizens . We now say nobody should stay in detention for more than 48 hours, then you go and bring a holden charge, which the Supreme Court had declared, null and void.

So, if you are coming to equity, you mustn’t fight corruption with corruption. You mustn’t fight corruption by corrupting the system, you must obey the rule of the land. So, we are totally for it and since we were in government for 16 years, it is natural that the pendulum will swing more on our side. Itshould be holistic. There are also people very close to his (Buhari’s) bedroom and we want to hear what the government is doing about it.

But your submission might be misconstrued, as trying to legitimize corruption. Government is saying money meant appropriated for arms purchase to contain insurgency in North-east were diverted into PDP presidential campaign…

Point of order! Security vote isn’t anti-insurgency. It has been existing before insurgency. Insurgency isn’t the only problem with insecurity in the country. What is happening in Kogi state is it insurgency? The shooting in Bayelsa, is it insurgency? Isn’t it electoral matters? If we perceive a situation that is a danger to the country, government has any right to do whatever it can do to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order. That’s the security of governance; it is totally different, not for anti-corruption agencies.

Look, I have been in PDP for 16 years, no contract, no appointment and God has kept me afloat. Let us not give impression that everybody in PDP is a thief and that everybody in APC is a saint. Wherever we find people who have genuinely stolen public fund, whether in PDP or APC, they should be dealt with in accordance with due process of the law and their fundamental rights must be at all stages upheld, because they aren’t guilt until they are pronounced guilty.

Prosecuting people on the pages of newspapers is wrong. What Buhari is doing is catch them name them, shame them! That isn’t all: we want to see people return money, we want to see people jailed in the law court, then that’s when they become thieves. But what you are seeing now is, they just sensationalize it, they just politicized it.

That will destroy the integrity of the entire process.

What is your appraisal of the war on terror?

Well, some people said they were going to make Jonathan government ungovernable. Was there no threat like that, clearly stated? In my place, they say, the tortoise said, if there is a stampede, he would push down a pregnant woman, if there is stampede and a pregnant woman is pushed down by anybody, wouldn’t you refer to what the tortoise said? So, that’s the situation we find ourselves. Somebody, somewhere threatened to make Nigeria ungovernable and Nigeria has been ungovernable under the last administration. So, the person is the suspect, not the PDP. What will PDP gain by making its own government ungovernable?

Your insinuation is that the opposition was instigating insurgency. But not that they are in the driver’s seat, the insurgency persists…

Well, I can tell you now that never in any place in the world has a government given insurgency ultimatum. They say it must end by December. America has never done it in Iraq, Pakistan, anywhere. So, it passeth all understanding for me that as soon as this government came they gave insurgency a terminal date. The impression we give is that somebody knows something that we don’t know.

What I have seen in the last few months is magic, military magic. All along we see convoy of cars of the militants with their tanks and flags that when they went to Chibok they had vehicles to carry 290 girls— those girls were taken with not less than 50 vehicles. Now you say you are routing them, we didn’t recover any vehicle, I haven’t seen any of those Hilux vehicles. You declared 100 people wanted but none of its leaders has been captured and you are telling me that the thing has ended. So, who is suspecting who? I rather want to see it as an international phenomenon, but trying to politicize insurgency which is what the APC did in the first place. I had warned that insecurity in any part of the country should be seen as a collective responsibility and opposition mustn’t use it to play politics. APC was responsible for that and now that it is PDP turn in opposition. I also warn PDP, don’t play politics with lives and wellbeing of Nigerians.

We must do mature, responsible opposition by partnering with government on this issue of insurgency as well as corruption and that’s a dignified, patriotic position that we are taking.

What do you think PDP needs to do to turn the table against APC?

Those of you who know me, you must have been aware that I contested the party chairmanship in 2008 and I contested publicity secretary in 2012. My agenda was paradigm shift. PDP at a time was taking the goodwill of Nigerians for granted. They became complacent; it was as if once you get PDP ticket you have won election and everybody went to sleep and then delivery of dividend of democracy and good government was taken for granted and I warned that we were sliding.

One major thing that happened was when we tried to subvert the zoning system which was a cardinal policy on which the party was founded, so that everybody has hope that one day, it will be our turn. They scuttled it. Some of us spoke out. So, what we should do now is to completely dismantle the party leadership, at all levels because they have failed. It is a part of honour and dignity for them to quit. I have nothing personal against anybody but if you go to a battle and you lose, you quit and you give others opportunity to serve. It means there was something you didn’t do right. You go, as a mark of honour and integrity. The party has failed, we need a complete clean. A change of the leadership at all levels and reconnection back to the vision of the founding fathers of the party; zoning, transparency, competitiveness, not imposition and impunity. Jonathan was imposed, they even said they printed one form and no other person would run for the election. Even if they were in support of Jonathan they should have given other people a chance.

So, we ended up excluding a huge chunk of Nigerians, because that situation was antithetical to democracy. So, PDP should change its leadership and go back to the founding vision. I think PDP is still the strongest and largest in Nigeria. In fact, APC isn’t a party but so many parties fused into one and that’s why they are having so many internal crises. We need a united party to have a united Nigeria and APC isn’t a united party. If the PDP can put its acts together, using the next convention and primaries and evolve a leadership that is chosen by the people, I can tell you that we would bounce back as quickly as possible. God is using the present situation to teach all of us a lesson, including the APC itself.

Lastly, the party recently had a post election conference. Were there lesson learnt?

Yes, lessons were learnt. It was the first intellectual exercise after the election. Papers were presented, people who were schemed out came to the centre to now say what they want. So, the brainstorming was very necessary.

It was a very successful outing and the document that came out of it is what is now being used for the engineering of the party. For instance, we have gone back to zoning. Secondly, no more impunity and imposition— on paper! We have said all these things, it is now for the people, the owners of the party to take advantage of the result of that conference to take back the party and let power belongs to the people, let them choose their leaders and choose their candidates. If the people are allowed to choose their leaders and candidates, PDP will come back in 2019.

But there is this sense of aloofness towards the PDP from the North, arising from its denial of the 2011 and 2015 presidential tickets.

What do you think the party can do to lobby the zone back into its fold?

We don’t lobby the North, we only need to correct what is wrong! Why did they leave? There was a deliberate policy of exclusion and imposition and they have shown their anger. PDP made APC to win the election, without the angry members of PDP, the New PDP that went into that place, APC wouldn’t have won the election. So, if we are able to correct our mistakes, I am sure we will get some of them back, if we don’t get all. And if we get some of them back and zone the presidency to where it should have been since 2011, am telling you, and get a right candidate, it is possible.

Aristocratic class, they are scared about the despotism that is going on now, but they just wanted power to come to the north. Power has come to the North but this isn’t the power they are looking for!’’
