Good day mamas, reporting life from Denver, Colorado. Renewed my visa via Dropbox after my last trip to Houston for my baby in 2014.

I wanted to fly United cos of d baby luggage allowance and they had only 3options Chicago, Houston and new wark. I quietly picked new wark as my liver no strong reach others

Left Nigeria on d 13th night arrived at Frankfurt, had a 4hrs layover and left for new wark. Fast forward to Poe;

CBp : Why r u here
Me: to ve my baby

Me: with my husbands friend, then I was waiting for him to send me to secondary inspection as I was really not even answering him properly as I lost my dad 2 Sunday's ago so just pushing myself then he asked how long I intend to stay so I told him about 7weeks dats how he stamped me in till October and said have a safe delivery.

It was just stress less. I thank God cos I wasn't even ready for anymore stress.

Congrats dear

U were suppose to personally gist me about New Jersey Poe na. Rem I asked for it with a bottle of wine after sharing my ticket details with u?

Don't mind me, I'm happy for u dear and don't worry, ur return leg is just Houston to Lag back. Pele

evemama:
Hello house, so am finally in Houston and I thank God for everything. My journey goes thus:

Left p.h with morning flight 8:55 to Abuja, rested well in the hotel and left for my flight around 6 pm same day. On getting to the airport, immigration pple were just nice and let me thru without hassles. Getting to weighing my bags, (lots of food stuffs) I had like 6 extra weight, one small witch girl refuse to let me go o! Insisted I paid 21, while I was arguing my hubby just collect paper from her go pay saying he does not want anything to stress me, I vex!

So boarded lufthansa to Frankfurt, showed fit to fly, did portend health paid 1k and I boarded. Had very good seat, nice leg space and empty seat beside me. Hostesses were really nice n friendly and really made me comfortable. Got to Frankfurt, didn't book wheelchair so I walked a while to my next terminal which was not bad cos it helped kill time. 4 hrs plus layover and I boarded United Airlines to Newark (new jersey). Just b4 landing I started feeling nauseated and sick. Next to POE experience

Q : why are u here
Me : to have my baby n do some shopping
Q : is this ur first and why America
Me : yes it's my first and for better health care
Q : how much do u have on u?
Me: 8k
Q : do u have a doctor n how much it will cost u
Me : yes I have all that, wanted to show him my papers he said no to worry.
finger prints and he said
Ok I'll send u for further exams.
me : ok so am off to secondary inspection.
Waited for like 3 mins and a guys works to were am seating and calls my name.
me : that's me
Q : what do u do back home
Me : am not working right now
Q : what does ur hubby do
Me : he's a contractor in bla bla
Q : so he's the sponsor of this trip
Me : yes
Q : how much do u have on u
Me : 8k, 250 dollars, 350 euro and my cards incase I need more cash
Q : were are u staying
Me : book intown suites apartment
Q : do u have family in the us
Me: No I don't
Q: why is ur hubby not here with u
Me: he'll join me later
Q: when will he join u
Me: sometime in July then we can both go back together in august, I added at least that's the plan for now.
Ok, just hold on
He goes and comes back 2 mins later, hands my passport over and says u can go get ur luggage in agriculture. All my time here is abt 10mins in total.

So am off to agric, questions, bag was not opened and nothing was seized ( had all sorts including frozen palm oil, fried snails, ) dropped my bags off and took another long walk to my terminal for flight to Houston abt 3 hrs. Boarded and started feeling like am sick and will throw up. Ate nothing except sipping water. Slept à little and we are in Houston. Took my luggage and left.

Rested well and am much better.
lessons,
wheel chairs are advisable, I think d long walking didn't help me,
personally I think direct flights are better, cos d stopping and entering got to me at the end. But don't blame me I was trying to avoid houston wahala!
Waiting for my appointment next week with Dr F.
Sorry for my long post.

Go thru Happytbaby's posts. She specifically directed one to me. Also planning to have me mum join. She said it all.

ijeomaobi1:
Hello all,

Please for my mum's interview, what should I expect she will be asked as she will be traveling with me. She hasn't travelled out before.
Thanks
TravelRe: Give Birth In USA: Cost And Procedures Part 4 by biollar1:
Congrats o...no be small thing at all. I'm happy you finally scaled thru

adycatus:
I want to appreciate everyone that contributes on this platform, experiences shared here assist alot.
Back to my chicago experience, I left Abuja to phoenix on d 9th April with British airways, Via London and Chicago as my POE and was supposed to arrive sameday at Arizona except dat I missed my flight at chicago and BA lodged me in2 a hotel in chicago wit a $50 meal ticket and I flew 7am chicago time d nxt day to Arizona.
POE Experience. I used Wheelchair. It really helped cos I travelled at 35wks.

Cbp: what are u here for?
Me; vacation and child birth
Cbp; U were here in Sept last here with ur hubby and child?
Me; I said yes just for 3wks vacation in washington DC.
Cbp: how long are u here for?
Me: 2months
Cbp: ur finger prints pls
Me; I scanned and thot dat was all, not knowing was still going for secondary inspection.

When I got there, there was much people on queue waiting to be called, but young, old, students and even couples dat came just for vacation.

After like 45mins, I was called in
Cbp: wat are u here for?
Me: I repeated vacation and child birth
Cbp: how far have u gone in ur pregnancy?
Me: 35wks
Cbp: wats ur EDD?
Me: I told him
Cbp: where are u going to have d baby?
Me: I mentioned d hosp in Arizona, gave him my receipt for my full hosp payment and doctor's and hosp correspondence
Cbp: he also asked to see the email from which the hosp reciept originated from, I showed him frm my fone.
Cbp: where do u work?
Me: work in a bank, showed him my I'd card and also told him am on a 3months paid maternity leave and showed him my letter to dat effect.
Cbp: wat does ur hubby do? Is he joining u in d Us?
Me; bla bla bla...
CBP: Where are u staying in Arizona?
Me: with a cousin
Cbp; is he or she expecting u?
Me: yes I handed over a letter I made my cousin write, addressing it to whom it may concern just few days b4 I left Nija and scanned to me. She stayed she was going to be my host and will be responsible for my accommodation & feeding while I have paid fully for my hosp bills.
Cbp: where does she work and we need to contact her to verify
Me; it's written in d letter, she works with wells Fargo bank and her fone no is on d letter and also a copy of her drivers licence
Cbp: he calls twice and said she isn't picking and I said she is at work and will be getting off work at 8pm Arizona time.
Cbp; how much do u have?
Me: cash of $5,500 and paid for both hosp and doc's fee in full and also sent 1,000dollar via money gram to my cousin and showed him evidence
Cbp: Ok extra cash is just for any additional hosp expences dst might come up? I said yes. So he asked for my return ticket?
Me; I gave him
Cbp; Am going to stamp u till d nxt day after ur return ticket which is sometime in June, so u are expected to leave d US in like 2months 1wk
Me; I said no, Wat if the vsby doesn't arrive early and I have some delays
Cbp; u can write for an extension
Me; I wouldn't want to do dat pls, why not stamp me for 3months at least till d day am supposed to resume work as stated on my leave advice from my bank cos I will be willing to go back to work, cos dat what pays my bills.
Cbp, he laughs and say am gonner stamp u for 6months. Take ur passport and wish u safe delivery after he had also gone to meet a female colleague of his and they both still discussed my case again.

Hmmm, u need to really equip urself for Chicago POE, if not, pls avoid it. A preg lady from polland was turned back and visa cancelled in my prescence there, cos she lied and hadn't paid for hosp and she is still a white. So it's not a thing of being black or Africa or white? Chicago is mean and tough.

Oh now I knw why mine took da long too. 3weeks dou but finally went tru

Cmeo:
I was able to do Form A to pay wife hospital bill at Sterling Bank. It took almost 5 weeks from the date of application because the amount was over $4k. I heard it takes about 74hrs for $4k or below (transaction subjected to availability of fund within bank) and takes weeks for amount over $4k (transaction subjected to availability of fund in CBN).

Hi

Got ur pm but I'm not Maryland bound dear, I'm Houston.

Must have mixed up dem monikers.

I suggest u use the search button to look it up.

All the best dear

Momo13:
Hello everyone,
First time post here.. I have tried to read all 4 parts of this looong thread (honestly I couldn't read all)
However I have a few gray areas which I would appreciate clarity on.
1. I intend going to Maryland with my hubby and daughter in July(due in August). I have tried to get correspondence from hospitals/doctors in MD/DC area to no avail even though my sister lives in Virginia but would be moving to Howard county,MD in a few weeks. Anyone who has had recent firsthand experience with any affordable hospitals please help with information
I need a dr correspondence hosp quote as this will form part of the burden of proof we need at the embassy(we are yet to obtain a U.S. Visa)
@biollar1..I see you are also Maryland bound and probably already have correspondence from holy cross? Kindly help with information, I tried to send you a pm but I guess I'm still learning the ropes..
Thanks in anticipation of quick responses, God bless!

Go with your soulcare dear. Give Mumsy the details. Yes, please go ahead and be the sponsor. Its more straight forward.

@bolded i am not sure what you mean....interview? If yes...no you cannot.

Glad you found it funny. Now hubby knows your Nairaland nickname. Congratulations on your PTA runs.

You are most welcome. Mumsy will be favored by God's grace.

Cheers.

TravelRe: Give Birth In USA: Cost And Procedures Part 4 by biollar1: 11:01pm On Apr 06, 2016
Haaa! Noted o!! My dear we learn everyday. Modified already! Thanks a lot for the correction.

happytbaby:
Someone was talking about buying PTA from FCMB earlier. I am quite familiar with the Bank and unless something has changed they will not sell PTA to an account holder whose account was opened less than 6 months earlier. However, you can reactivate a dormant account and buy. the way it works in these days of dollar scarcity is that the branch will do a justification to Head Office (Treasury) and if it is approved, they will sell to you. Such approvals don't necessarily have to take 5days, it can come in 1hour depending.... however, dollar things no easy these days o so they might not approve. If your spouse has an account with them, the policy allows you to buy through your spouse's account.

Biollar:

Please don't be talking that kind transaction on public forum abeg. If others try it and they get caught nko? You will be surprised how many ghost readers will go and do this thing. You know they actually send details to CBN, someone may actually start checking and see that same bill was paid twice from two different banks. I do not blame you babe, just don't publicize it. I have done some serious stuff and have quite a bit of dollars stashed already which even though legal, I will not come and be saying here....you get. I never even buy PTA o but I don open Sterling account today in case FCMB fails us on PTA.

Between which I need to find cheaper tickets, without tickets they will not establish Form A for me and they have given us verbal approval to bring the transaction that it will be done ASAP.
TravelRe: Give Birth In USA: Cost And Procedures Part 4 by biollar1: 10:59pm On Apr 06, 2016
Chai! E mi nikan tan? You just gave me skull expansion dear. MANY MANY MANY THANKS FOR THIS O.

Now see ehn, Myself, hubby and son got the visa for vac purpose last year and we used it for that. We stayed in a hotel in Florida, we were asked during the interview if we'd be staying with fam members and we said NO.

Sent notification of intent already and got the usual response.

Now we intend staying with a fam member but I don't know their status in the US and I don't want to do trial and error, so we r doing soulcare. Will dis pose a problem? Status do change ryt?

Can I go in with her?

Since she's my mum and the amt u quoted is in d range of what I take home dou hubby earns more than dat and u also said it's more straightforward if I'm the sponsor, will just tag my name as the sponsor.

The bolded gat mi rolling mehn...had to show hubby sef, almost fell off the chair while laughing.

Again God bless u for the time o.

happytbaby:
Aunty Biollar onidollar,

I have been lazy ni o but this one that you have caught me, let me sit down and try.

Yes, after you have left is good for her interview. You have sent a letter of intention to deliver and you will declare your motive at POE so all is well, it should be in your records.

When filling Mumsy's form I suggest you put yourself or hubby as sponsor (put the person who earns more), if you earn up to like 400k a month, put your name (just an estimate on my part o, no VO told me this figure o) because its more straightforward if you are the sponsor than your hubby, but both can fly. When she is going for the interview, please have her hold a copy of your visa page and intl passport data page (this is mostly the only document they look at for mothers) after all they can't ask her to be explaining your earnings. However, she still needs to hold you bank statements, what I think they do is just to use the visa/data page to prompt your information and cross check what the parent is saying.

At the end of the form where they ask if someone helped fill the form, click yes and fill in your details (name and relationship...I think, can't remember for sure right now).

Now to the interview itself.

Likely questions and suggested answers are below:

Que: What are you going to do in the US?
Ans: I am going to assist my daughter who is the US to have a baby
Que: Where in the US are you going?
Answer: Tucson, Arizona (make sure Mumsy knows the name of the exact town not just the state)
Que: where will you stay
Ans: this depends on what you filled in your own form, she doesn't need to cram the address though, don't go and be drilling iya oniya o. Answer should be with relative or extended stay apartment. Let me state here that they particularly don't seem to like older people staying in hotels, they prefer when they stay with people. when I say older people, I mean from like 60yrs. However, you can't change your old story for this, it has to be the place you wrote on your landing card.
Que: is your daughter married...when did she get married?
Ans: Yes, she eloped and got married to Mr Biollar and became Mrs Atawewe in the year 20xx
Que; Do you have other children?
Ans: yes 3, two are here in Nigeria (i don't know how many you guys are o, just speaking hypothetically)
Que: Who is paying for your trip?
Ans: My daughter/son- in- law

Its unlikely she will get all the questions above, maybe 3.

If she is not sure she will hear their oyinbo accent, please she should request for interpreter. Not because she cant speak English o but the interpreters frame questions better one kind....it seems to favour people.

Please note that she can also go before you travel but its better if she goes after. they won't revoke your visa without calling you to come and explain yourself dear.

If I remember anything else, I will let you know.

P.S: let her carry a family picture, could be of your wedding. She wont need it but its better to over-prepare than not be prepared.

cinakin:
Kemo88, it's quite easy and the lady who does it is so nice. It doesn't disturb the blue Pali at al. You snap the blue Pali, consent letter, birth cert, itinerary, passport photograph and send to her, then pay the money to her Bank of America account. Then wait to receive it in the mail after three days. grin when you get it, don't forget to make a photocopy of the ETC, without it, you can't get his naija passport. And it is valid for seven days. You can do all this in the comfort of your home, if you have US Internet banking.

My dear same procedure o, I applied at the one on Osolo way(Ajao Estate) with passport, visa page and ticket . My account is not domiciled at the branch, just decided to try my luck and that's it o. Was charged N395 for Vat, N7900 for sumthin sumthin 1% cash processing and got the $4k at N197 per $.

They just started selling actually. I specifically asked the CSM there and she said they have started selling but it takes 5 working days to get approval. 5 cum turn to 2weeks den 3weeks.

A colleague applied a week ago and was also given.

His took just a week cos he's traveling April, mine is still May, I'm guessing da prolly delayed it a bit. U dig?

I concur! The cash started it all.

Austine2020:
Congrats on your successful POE. This Houston is sometimes difficult,But it could have been easier if you had enough cash with you.Because thats what started the whole long interview,Because when she was arguing with you about why you didnt make any payment to the intown suit, only to find out again that u didnt have enough cash with you and that escalated the whole interview more. Secondly u did well to stick to your initial answer about Good healthcare instead of changing your answer. All in all,Houston is a difficult POE which after all the questions u can still make it in,than Chicago that can send someone back after drilling someone with questions.

Me: currently there is scarcity of d dollar currency in Nigeria so i traded woth someone who had a US bank account
Cbp: when did this happen
Me: 2days ago
Cbp: u sure its ur money
Me: Yes I am sure it is
Cbp: well that is Still 11500, at ur visa interview u said it will cost u 15k to have ur baby here
Me: yes my husband will be coming as well and he will bring some cash
C bp: when will he be coming
Me: gave her an estimated arrival date
Cbp: how much does he have available to him
Me: 4k
Cbp: Oh so ur spending ur whole life savings on this trip
Me: Not at all I'm on maternity leave and ill be earning salary while m here. My husband will be earning hos salary as well
CBP: why do u want to give birth in the US
Me : this is my first and I want access to a different and better health care
Cbp: its not like u have previous experience In terms of health care how do u then compare
Me: I do
Cbp: in which country
Me: Nigeria
Cbp: what's it like and what symptoms
me: its alright but obviously Nigeria is developing US is developed . Other symptoms
Cbp: like?
Me: headache. Malaria. N all (Didn't see all these coming. Didn't know what to say
Cbp: I put it to u that if ur child would not be a US citizen. U won't be here in the first place. U r here for the passport not health care. Right?
Me: getting a passport for the child is am added perk and a good one
CBP: and that's the major reason ur here
Me:like I said its a good one but my main reason is for better health care and the citizenship is one of the perks
C BP: Started raising her voice.. you are not being honest and you r not a straight forward person. Do u know how many women I interview from Nigeria on a daily basis
Me: I wouldn't know I have no idea
C Bp: At least 20 of them n they r honest that they r here for the passport..
Me: well everyone has their reasons. For me its access to better health care system andsince I had the opportunity. I'm making use of that.
Cbp: what r u saying (woth so much disdain) so others don't v the opportunity
me: its an opportunity. Some don't, others do.
C bp: you r lying u r not being honest. At least they r honest
Me: How have I lied n how have I been dishonest. I just said having the passport is an added perk n a good one.
CBP: I am goimg to ask again. Why R u here to have ur b ab y. Why US
Me: because I want access to better health care
CBp: *went on and on about how "dishonesty" is my middle name*. Was tired of the back n forth but i insistedon my initial response cos that's my true intention so saying something else wasn't an option.
Just kept quiet n kept smiling looking a her as she typed and kept saying "at least they r honest and u r not... repeated more than 10 times
she then held on to my passport n says "go outside n sit down "
After 10mins she came out n handed my passport over and didn't give further directives.
Took it n went to another officer who looked through n said I could go. Saw that she had written "cleared" on the landing card. N also she had stamped me In till October.

No be small thing. It was really tough. Houston POE is tough..

Just be coherent and consistent.

Theodora:
Hello Everyone,

I would like to thank everyone that responded to my question earlier in Part 3.
I would also like to say that my journey to the USA was a breeze. I arrived Apr 1 and despite my obvious belly I was only asked 2 questions

Officer at POE :Why are you visiting the US.

Me: For my vacation

Officer at POE: What do you do?

Me: HR manager at bla bla ......

Officer at POE: ok welcome .Stamps me in for 6months and wishes me good luck.
They didn't check my bag or anything..

I went in through Houston.

Thank you

Hello everyone and happy new month. Glad to be part of the part 4 journey.

@All new mummies, congratulations.

May all our dreams and hardworking on our children be fruitful IJN.

finally got an hospital in New Jersey that provided me with their pricing, however I've been asked to contact a doctor for his bill. Once that his sorted, that's when they said they can take me in. Am positive that in the coming week I will have that sorted out. My EDD is still in October o. Just want to sort of as much as I can to avoid last minute rush.

LadyG, omodadi, atawewe, JW, I hail all of u na o
