PoliticsRe: The Story Behind The Asian Tigers (Nigeria Take Note) by birdman(m): 9:51am On Dec 14, 2011
igbo2011:
We have two groups of people holding us back from that. The domestic greedy politicians who make money from importing generators and the international politicians who want Africans to depend on them forever The main thing is that if we don't export raw materials then America or China would probably just kill us all to be honest.

Europe/America does business with us with a gun to our head. They kind of force things on us. We don't give, they TAKE. There isn't much money in extracting, it is all in processing, that is where jobs are created. We don't need anything from the west, we can make everything in Africa. But they have a HUGE army and they will just TAKE. Most wars are fought over resources of some sort.
Tha asian "tigers" and BRIC all had the issues you described above, with politicians more corrupt and savage than anything we have. We can t hide behind excuses forever.

PoliticsRe: Zuma Tells African Leaders To Dump West's Economic Models by birdman(m): 5:03am On Dec 13, 2011
ekt_bear:
Do what works. And it should be clear at this point that the western economic models are what work.
Actually, it is clear  present-day economic models do not work. If you have to print money out of thin air to pay debtors, you have a system that does not work.  If you have a system which progressively erodes its middle class, the basis of a healthy democracy, then it does not work. There is no other way to put it.

I could even see if this were 1960 or so, around the time all these African countries were just getting independence.

They tried their own economic models, and largely all failed.
But why did they fail? Are you lumping countries that tried communism and failed with those whose democracy was overthrown by bloody coup. That definitely doesn't sound right. Awo for example instituted free education which goes against the tenets of today's capitalism. It is very obvious that it worked, given the ripple effect it has had on 3 generations and counting.

Meanwhile these Asian countries like Singapore, Korea, Japan and China in 1979 went with the Western economic models and have zoomed past Africa.
The western economic model of the 70s is different from what you have today. Industrial policy, which the asians copied is now anathema in the west. Obviously there is a lot to emulate, but to embrace an economic model suited for another culture hog wild is crazy.

Even if this had nothing to do with the militants, I can see some northern knuckleheads using this as an excuse for open season. It doesn't help that the militants only just threatened to do this.

Ok more information unfolding. 43% of NASA scientists are Iranians.

http://www.iranian.com/main/news/2011/02/13/43-nasa-scientists-are-iranians
You have good points, and I would agree and disagree emany01. The Iranians DO have the capability to reverse-engineer the drones. Dont forget they built a rocket and nuclear program from the ground up, in the face of crippling sanctions. This is not a small feat.

However, I dont think the US is afraid of Iran, more likely just cautious as emany01 said. Iran isn't anywhere close to the US in terms of capability both militarily and otherwise. The wahala has to do with their strategic positioning in the middle east. With sufficient military power comes political power and they can exert that on their neigbhors like sponsoring shiite factions in saudi, bahrain, etc, and countering Israeli moves in the region.

The scariest scenario will probably not involve oil directly, but the strait of Hormuz. Sufficient military power like nukes would definitely enbolden Iran to restrict access to the Strait of Hormuz. This is almost guaranteed world war. The Iranians know they could not win such a war, but their nukes would prevent anyone from messing with their territorial integrity.

There you are wrong wind energy is cheap free clean and constant we have thousands of kilometer of coastline lying falo and mountainous regions wind energy could harnes 1000s of megawatts of electricity. In european countries like germany,  holland, and france  wind energy is been used to produce mega watts of electricity. So state governors its over to you we will now know which governors really have the interest of its citizens  cool

States like pleatau, benue state that are on a high elevation can also reap 1000s of  mega watts of wind energy without any fear of mend blowing up any gas pipeline.
Its not cheap in comparison to coal or LNG. If the other countries had our resources, they wouldnt bother about wind. There is a reason they bit the bullet and use nuclear reactors. I'm sure they would have loved wind instead.

Its not free either. You need land, which you could use for other things. And proper regular maintenance if you want any reasonable level of efficiency from your windmill.

And no, it is not constant, any more than wind is constant. You can use it reduce pressure on the grid in certain areas. But if you have other sources, which are cheaper, more efficient and pack more punch, why waste time.

I'll grant you that its cleaner. Even this im not so sure off. The ugliness on the landscape ought to count as a negative environmental externality.
PoliticsRe: States Begin Power Distribution In January - NERC by birdman(m): 7:30am On Dec 08, 2011
Wind energy makes little sense given our geography and other more abundant resources. The idea is to produce energy at economically viable prices, not white elephant projects

If this really happens. . . then kind of a big deal.

I hope my state governor is plotting how he will make power widely available.

Question though, are states mandated to sell the electricity they sell at prices set by the FG? Or can they charge what they like?

Imo even if they are forced due to FG regulation to sell electricity at a loss, they should see if it is feasible to just eat the loss and make up the money by increased taxes elsewhere.
If prices are set by FG, then this is is DOA. Its the same reason we dont have refining capacity - no investor wants govt. set prices

Your point is well taken, but unfortunately, it is not even that simple. Radioactive hot spots have been found as far away as Tokyo, from the Fukushima accident. Nigeria's Govt did the right thing by recorgnising the libyan peoples wish.
the way i understand it, he was a ceremonial figurehead. The real administrators were elected by grassroots democracy. It seemed to have worked for them, considering the high standard of living they enjoyed, and unparalleled resource allocation compared to any other country in Africa and the Arab world. All governments do not have to look the same. It is reasonable to adapt to your own peculiar culture.

To take a stand against america means taking a stand against europe because europe and america are a partnership - soyinka knows this and this is why he is now siding with jonathan, the man is a coward.
Soyinka is obviously no coward. You only need to ask SSS and military men active during the last 3-4 dictatorships. He has earned the right to be heard. That doesnt mean he cant be wrong - he is after all human. Sometimes Soyinka does get a little too academic for the real world. I can respect him and disagree with him at the same time, and he is horribly wrong here.

Women are not that hard to deal with.
Guys, this is horrible advice. Rewarding bad behavior is never the way to go. You are indirectly telling your partner you are a doormat, and you can expect her to keep doing the same. You have the right to expect a certain level of maturity from your partner, including the maturity to change when confronted with her bad habits.

The justice system (police and courts) have a hard time containing hardened criminals. Depending on them for wife battery cases is not going to work long term. Whatever solution you come up with, it must take into account the the uniqueness of Nigerian (and African) society. This may sound old-fashioned, but it really is a good idea to make sure your family is on board with your significant other. So if sh** hits the fan, you have a support system that can defend you. It is hard, if not impossible to live completely independently in a society like Nigeria, so having your family behind you helps a lot.

I hope the Gender Alert debrief08 mentioned passes, but I wont hold my breath.

David and birdman I beg to differ like Lady Winona said her own beating started when she was 5 months pregnant. My own case my ex was like my brother if der was someone I thought I knew inside out it will be him, his dad was abusive yes but he always defended his mom, even when his mom ended up in d hospital sometimes he will be with her in d hospital while I will be with his younger sibblings taking care of them. He was vehemently against smoking and drinking, it was always just me and him never caught him cheating, ours like a fairy tale dat ended badly. My dad almost raised him cos we were neighbors and family friends so he took him under his wings cos he didn't want him learning those steps from his dad. Anyway, like I said just 2 months hanging with his dad was able to undo all dat and bring out a monster, he wasn't very successful when we were dating, six months to d wedding he got a good job and invested in a business opportunity which snowballed, when he became successful dats when his dad reached out it seemed his dad showed him he was proud of him something he had secretly always hoped for cos he had no relationship with his dad. One day he told me dat marriage is different fro dating dat in dating if I don't want something I can leave but in marriage its forever so am stuck with him. There are lots of men like dat who only show after marriage
My post wasn't to make light of your situation. I was just pointing out a few things to those generalizing about men being wife-beaters. By the way, yours is a nightmare scenario, someone you love suddenly flips a switch and they become someone else. There is no way to detect such people - this is an inherent (and scary) risk of marriage. Thankfully, you got out alive

I cant count how many times a woman claims she is looking for one thing (a gentleman), and automatically chooses the opposite ( a bad boy) when given a choice. It obviously doesn't make violence ok, but i'm surprised that they are surprised when mr. bad boy starts to act bad.

FamilyRe: by birdman(m): 5:31am On Sep 14, 2011
Wife beating is not going to stop anytime soon, and no, its not just the fault of men. Most abusers show their traits early on, but we are a materialistic society. The house, cars and comfortable lifestyle is all women want to see, hoping they can change this guy later on.

Outstrip:
The other thing that goes hand in hand with women taking control of hteir lives is what women say. Nigerian women should stop making comments like "my husband's house". Start using the term "our home". "our property". The day he says pack out of my house you will look at him and say you mean our house? If your in laws com e to visit you do not need to be aggressive to show them that it is your home. The words you say let them know whose home it is. You don't have to fight your people or kill yourself with stress to show that you make as much sacrifices for your marraige as their brother does. In many ways the woman sets the tone of things. If the man decides to be physically abusive then that is on him but you are the one who also makes the choice on what you will hang around and put up with.
See, this is the kind of stuff women do that eventually breeds abusers. If you have to "prove" the house is "ours", this is already a bad sign in the relationship. Instead of fighting with his in-laws (yes, this is where it will end up even though you tried not to be aggressive at the beginning), what happened to talking about it with your husband in a civilized manner. If he wont listen to you then, you have bigger problems.

Your man in power is getting exposed daily. Instead of admitting to mistakes he loves to deflect blame on (surprise, surprise) his political opponents. GEJ is in full control of the FG - if he indeed had proof of Buhari's wrongdoing, he would have produced it by now, to decimate his biggest rivals. How did this guy get a PhD, such incompetence ought to be criminal.

Foreign AffairsRe: F$(#&k Louis Farrakhan by birdman(m): 12:59am On Sep 12, 2011
Morpheus, morpheus, morpheus,

You obviously do not understand the concept of RESPECT for a position. You dont have to agree with Farrakhan on his views or tactics, but you do have to respect that he commandeers a sizeable black following, making him a black leader of thought. Even MLK did not use uncouth language towards NOI, because he understood their authority, even if he disagreed with their means. You on the other hand, obviously have a long way to go. My advice to you: before you start spitting high-sounding arguments, learn the basics - like respect for those that come before you. This is an African (and universal) sign of wisdom, something you are obviously lacking by your own thread title.

Btw, to the dude who suggested the million man march accomplished nothing: Till today, there are black men, who still recount tales of that march, as their first taste of what true manhood and fatherhood was supposed to be like, as they rode in buses with older folk.Tens of thousands of young black men had a positive impact from that march.
