How do you get to investment grade? It’s a question that interests many developing economies. Handily, credit rating agency Fitch has just published a few pointers for Nigeria, a country that is three notches below the magic level.

The research compares Nigeria to seven other emerging countries that have made the step up. So what are the key areas that Nigeria needs to improve?

Three that most need improvement are: per capita GDP, reserve cover and governance. The metrics which Nigeria needs to improve aren’t necessarily a barrier to investment grade. As the author of the report, Richard Fox told beyondbrics: “A weakness can be offset by a strength – no particular indicator disqualifies a country, but you have to compensate elsewhere.”

Fox pointed out that China – rated A- by Fitch – has a low per-capita income compared to other investment-grade sovereigns – but it clearly has strengths in its balance sheet and elsewhere.

On the issue of foreign exchange reserves, Fox wrote that Nigeria’s position could be improved relatively rapidly by high oil prices, especially as other oil exporters were seeing a quicker strengthening of reserves. Higher reserves would offset, for Fitch at least, the high level of commodity dependence, which at 70 per cent is above the investment grade average of 51 per cent. But as per Fox’s report:

… although the Federal government’s budget deficit and consolidated government budget surplus are within the range experienced by newly [investment grade] countries, they are not as strong as some of the major oil producers when they made the transition to IG – notably Azerbaijan and Russia. Increased fiscal savings in Nigeria’s new sovereign wealth fund will be a key driver of Nigeria’s rating.

So how long will it take Nigeria to get to investment grade? Fox point out that a typical three-notch improvement can take between six and eight years, which fits with the Nigerian government’s Vision 2020. “It’s a plausible target,” said Fox

I'm at home jamming with my Igbo friend (we've friends since primary school) - and we've been chatting and laughing about NL, and the comments by different posters for the past three hours. I love Nigeria, and I would love us to remain together. We need to harness the unique qualities of every tribes present in Nigeria, to make Nigeria great. And the best way to do that is by bringing the two power houses in the South (Yorubas and Igbos) together - I believe the lack of unity between these two great tribes is the missing link in Nigeria.

I'm a DETRIBALIZED NIGERIAN, and this is NAIRALAND not IGBOLAND. I have a right to critique anything concerning all the regions in Nigeria. If you don't like it, you know what to do.

N/B: I'm tired of the government spending part of our national wealth on irrelevant structures. Nigerian masses are suffering!

shymmex: I think three airports are not enough, why can't you ask for fifty? Nigerians are dying everyday from hunger, stress, lack of health care, and lack of basic infrastructures - yet you want the government to waste the scarce resources on irrelevant structures. undecided

I want to read your suggestions, I like your mentality - you're one the realist people on NL. Okija_juju used to be like you, but I don't know when he contracted the virus. I think Ejine is also someone I rate highly.

Nnenna1: Olodostein has a point in that manufacturing and homegrown production is paramount in any form of development. China, Japan and Russia did not become superpowers largely by foreign investment. Nigeria as a whole is a colossal failure in garnering as much self-sufficiency as possible. Number one reason for this stemming from lack of electricity.

If the electricity problem was solved and Nigerians (including those in the diaspora) are as resourceful and as creative as I think, many of the basic fundamental needs would have been solved since yesterday.

I honestly believe this.

Come to think of it - I find it surprising that no one has thought of affordable and alternative methods for generating electricity (I.e. Fuel free) to sell. Would this be illegal since electricity generation is a FG scheme?
Igbo Kwenu!!!

That's why I'm in love with Igbo girls. Igbo men need to stop their warrior and red sand wrestling mentality - and be more pragmatic. Your problem, and the problem with the "cesspit" called Nigeria (borrowing grandpa dede's favourite phrase) is not building airports. We need to provide basic amenities, and make the whole control conducive for stable middle-class to grow - thus, expanding the economy. Then, we may start talking about building airports in every village in Nigeria.

Nnenna nma, I admire you baby. wink

Crazy scientists - they have messed up this one, it's now time to look for another planet to colonize. Just let me leave this planet before you start a war with creatures you can never defeat. I don't know why these white lunatics called scientists are gluttons. The western civilization, with all its face-lifts hasn't even surpassed the ancients ones, in terms of spirituality and knowledge - yet they're about to mess up another planet. undecided

be honest for once
I'm here because I believe in ONE NIGERIA - and how we need to fight the power.
i think the more appropriate question is why are you so interested if it has nothing to do with you, especially as the OP already said that states or private capital should fund them not federal money
so why are you sweating over this?
I'm Nigerian, and I have a RIGHT to critique any proposal which involves spending part of our national wealth, period. As long as Igboland is part of Nigeria - I'm entitled to critique it. cool
