Sometimes it's meaningless arguing with those illiterates. They are blinded and will say anything to give credit to the Nigerian military. That's how one of them was saying the Nigerian military has what it takes to sink a UK aircraft carrier.
It's just a discourse. No need to stoop low to abuse because of difference in opinion.

It's every one with their opinion
Let's just be expecting new Hardwares soon..
grin That's my take
I used to think we could years ago until I read wide and discovered the complexity involved. We are also losing our engineers going abroad while the good ones here are stuck in offices or jobs below their capabilities.

We can start by selecting a chassis, T72/T90 or build from scratch. But we need to poach engineers. China poaches lots of Soviet and Ukrainian engineers for their military hardwares. Can outsource parts to other countries, but most sensitive bits would need to be done in house such as FCS, composite etc.

Bro I can assure u that we won't use up to that amount to develop a tank..
It's almost the same case as lemme say the MRAPs.
We produce the same quality even better MRAPs of some countries yet we get ours for a lower price
E.g Ezugwu MRAP
Oga wake up.
We need advanced industries to support a production of tanks. We lack even steel alloy production, precise enineering down to components on a micro level which we don't manufacture in country. MRAPS are built up on 4x4 or so while tanks are built from scratch. MRAPs built in Nigeria with lower labour costs are of course going to be cheaper.

Tanks are next level engineering with millions of dollars for a start. Most of the countries with indigenous tanks already have industries that made it possible plus they still import some components, Pakistan, India, Turkey et al.

Abeg does anyone knows whether proforce is building a battle tank or planning on building?
There was talks of this but We haven't seen any renderings or otherwise yet.
They'll need considerable government support. Tanks are considerably expensive at millions of pounds/dollars per unit (excluding research costs).

Nigeria also needs considerable advanced industries that can support during the build stage. It's not impossible though.

The Libyan army shot down a new Turkish Bayrakdar Drone
I keep asking myself what is Turkey doing in Libya, what’s there interesting or what are they gaining. Only God knows how many drones what millions of dollars that they have lost.
Turkish drone use, development and the works of an electrical engineer, 'Selcuk Bayraktar' makes quite interesting reading. Only issue seems to be the numbers lost from Syria, Turkey and Libya, it's quite significant not to believe they were rushed by their crackpot leader to prove a point.

America and select countries have always been able to suss out intelligence on places where possible. North Korea, Iran are examples, where clandestine constructions, or even missile silos have been discovered.

Even little Israel is able to track and strike the Syrian regime repeatedly before on their way or trying transfer heavy hardwares to terror groups like Hezbollah.

Heck, these guys have satellite in space whose capabilities are classified. They may as well have stealth assets flying over us.

Fair enough. I hope they can get some work done. I'd rather they build something operational than commissioning only to be stuck on a shelf.

In my own opinion, I think NAF should start absorbing some pure talent like the one in this video

I stand to be corrected though because I don't know much in this area. Actually I haven't seen such talent with much dedication like this guy.
...

Unfortunately, if country was developed he'll probably own his line of consumer drones or working in an area where his talents would earn him decent financial rewards. Military drones are another sphere, robotics, material sciences, software engineers are needed. Unless he has extensive networks or prior experience at advanced level, he'll not be able to deliver.

Uavision's work with the NAF was more of a capacity building engagement, I'm not sure they helped with work on the gulma, but they certainly worked on the tsaigumi, which is built on the same platform as the gulma, but major improvements on endurance though, how far their work together would go is left to be seen, but R & D is capital intensive as you said, so the NAF got their work cut out, maybe that's why the NAF eagle project was put on hold?
I reckon other than capacity building, it was just another typical Nigerian MOU/partnership gone bad. ATR 42 seems to be doing the bulk of reconnaissance when it can fly.

The airforce if serious should split their development programmes into a separate entity otherwise struggle for the little funds they have whilst fighting an insurgency.

@Toju200
The drones are surely more useful in the NE sector. Knowing the army, they like to gloat over their in house built hardwares. So I'm sceptical they actually work as intended.

We just want to look further and deeper into UAV technology..
By the the y'all know they are working on the Ichoku combat drone...So....let them do wat they do grin
Tsaigumi has never been shown conducting reconnaissance since commissioning. I'll eat my hat if Ichoku is anything closer to reality than words they keep releasing.

Some of the drones able to do their work efficiently rely on IP, technology and patents we don't even seem to have access to. We could get there via R& D but takes significant money, years of experience and the best brains.

The NAF, always spot on cool, I look on this with promise, it seems they have experience developing autonomous systems, it would interesting to see if this can be substantiated with the development of an indigenous auto-pilot system for the ichoku ucav, or future crafts, uavision's work with NAF on the tsaugaimi was entry level

Hmmn. If Uavision is entry level. I don't know what to call this new partners they got.
In other words, I hope the new guys are up to task. I have read development history of some countries drone programmes and they are very challenging and painstaking.

Knowing Nigeria and not having time for patience, let's hope they'll get all the time they need.

Also this means Tsaugaimi was just a farce?

The current DG of DICON is making considerable efforts in retooling and modernizing DICON, but we need to remember that company was left to rot by the previous government and up until time they never hard a smart DG, who thinks outside the box.

The Beryl deal is dead as far as I know, but efforts are made in other areas. DICON-SUR is a considerable foreign direct investment, NAVMC now integrated into DICON is doing well with a good range of vehicles.
Well, I hope a deal could be salvaged if everyone gets their acts together. Also guessing paucity of funds and so.

The Beryl is a damn good hardware with multiple accessory options.

If you leave only me, Nigeria would sign tech transfer with Israel, give DICON like 6 production lines and standardise our small arms fleet, service wide.

Nigeria/DICON signed an intent to manufacture Beryl rifles, though we haven't heard much since the deal was signed.

You have lame excuses for everything. We at least BOUGHT something EFFECTIVE albeit expensive. VT-4 have RWS already.
Why can't they be used in tandem ? How many soldiers should die because of costs while you sit pretty in your safe enclave away from AA rounds ? How about armoured VBIEDs, RWS will take them out?

You have blurred reality with fantasy.

Taking a very expensive sledge hammer to kill a fly, doesn't make any sense. How much is one ATGM even as Chinese made cheapest will be around $35k, what is value of one of those rickety run down rusted pick up, maybe $400.

Poor strategy if you ask me.
OMG
Who be this, So destroying a technical with an AA gun that'll otherwise kill and maim valuable officers and soldiers needed on the battlefield 'doesn't make sense'?. How about the many hundreds of thousands/millions (dollars) invested in training, courses abroad, field experience that would be snuffed out if one technical isn't stopped or destroyed?

Oga are you even reading what they wrote... They said they want to buy an innocent cargo plane and ask Denel of SA to convert into a bad ass fighting machine and you are talking of AC130 are you not the same person that said we can't buy armed platforms from the west. The C130 can be sold to Nigeria by even countries within the North Allied treaty and can be retrofitted for combat roles here in Africa or the UAE.
At bolded, pray tell where I said such?

About the AC-130, You have comprehension issues I'm guessing? I quoted the dude as an aside. Nigeria can damn buy any military hardware from any blocs, union or party willing to sell. However, you don't seem to know anything about development history. Retrofitting by Denel to any C130 would take a significant period of time before their concept becomes reality unless Nigeria hasn't got any immediate need for it.
It took 3 years for Airbus Military/ATK to retrofit the AC235 and was still undergoing more modifications as the years went by. If we are talking of gunships available for service right now, those are the options I gave.

And? There are many other things the US does not sell its closest allies. Ever seen an American ally using a Nimitz Aircraft Carrier? And why would the allies buy the Raptor when the JSF is supposedly miles better?

Look, building a gunship is not rocket science. You just have to sit down and understand what you need and the tools you need for the job. You can even model it on computers to know how the armament would change the flight behavior of the plane. There is no science to it. In Vietnam the US even put gun and rocket pods, plus miniguns on light planes. Nothing is stopping us from copying that, but with more modern modifications.

F22 Raptor still possesses some technology and components more advanced than the F35. The latter was made when costs for The Raptor kept spilling over budget hence they decided on an alternate version which became F35.

Besides gunships can range from extremely elaborate like AC130 which can handle recoils like from 105mm howitzers to modular ones like the M27 Praetorian.

We don't need to contract the Russkies. South Africa is more than capable of turning just about any cargo plane into a gunship.
US will never sell AC 130 or F 22 raptor to even its closest allies.

Closest comparable to an AC 130 we can buy is the AC-235/295 with 30mm canons, missiles and sensors.

We are not contending with Algeria or Egypt it's Boko Haram it's not conventional warfare.

Not what we need and therefore not fit for purpose. IMO

Which kind person be this now? So we should return the tanks and get T72s?

Most important right now is we have a 'tank' which probably also is more capable than T72s albeit in limited numbers.

Go Read bellingcat and Oryx blog to see how many hundreds of Syrian tanks and armour got knocked out before their tactics evolved.

Tanks are force multipliers and not silver bullets.
Foreign Affairs / Re: Battle Field Discussion (picture/video) Of African Military . by BlackBaron: 7:52pm On Apr 09, 2020
All these fights over tanks.
Who remembers the time when it was T84 Ukrainian oplots we were supposed to get?

Then didn't happen and we got T72s instead. For the price we got them, spares and repairs meant we couldn't sustain any momentum with them.

We got VT4s, this deal most likely comes with support and logistics for an extensive period of time. It lacks all the bells and whistles of their MBT3000, but it is advanced than anything in Sub Saharan Africa right now.

By the way, Thailand actually preferred The Oplot but Ukraine wasn't able to meet production demands (priorities for their own army at war with Russia) so soon chose the VT4 to fill in their needs.

Considering the number of people who die in the world daily the current pandemic is not as serious as it is being portrayed in the news. I hope Africa can run the numbers and stop curfews and lockdowns and let people work.

For years Africa has been blindly following what happens in the west. They have their own reasons for locking down which have nothing to do with the virus.
Dude, wake up. A virus that's potentially airborne killing young, old, extremely fit to unhealthy is not something to look the other way.
