TravelRe: Lagos Underground Map by blackspade(m): 10:13am On Apr 04, 2009
I will tell you now, building a subway in Lagos will not only be financially unfeasible, but will be much more difficult to build than it was in cities like New York, or London, or Moscow.

Lagos has a lot of marshlands, meaning the soil is much more unstable, raising the costs to astronomical heights. If it were necessary, only one line would be needed on the busiest route in the metropolis.

Everything else should be concentrated on an overground system consisting of: light rail, monorail, elevated rail, commuter rail, high speed train, and brt.

Nairaland GeneralRe: Where Have All The Trees Gone? by blackspade(m): 1:44am On Apr 04, 2009
If we don't act fast, deforestation is gonna to change not only the face of Igboland, but Africa forever.

We as a continent are only second to South America when it comes to how fast deforestation is occurring.

What's even worse is that after we cut the trees down, hardly anyone ever plants the seeds for new ones to grow.

I really don't see the correlation. The appropriate name for this process is called 'urban renewal', which is desperately needed in Lagos.
Foreign AffairsRe: Madonna Loses Malawi Adoption Bid by blackspade(m): 4:08pm On Apr 03, 2009
LOL @ "Mr. Tpia"! grin grin grin

As to this adoption, I really never had a problem with it in the first place. The child is an orphan, with both parents dead, Madonna would have made sure this child had a wonderful life, great education, and above all, a loving family. But, now that this adoption bid has been denied, I think if she really cares about this child, she should either sponsor the little boy, or help raise the quality of life in the boys village. Build a school, health post, etc, that would benefit multiple children in need.

UK Launches New Student Immigration System

Abuja — Henceforth, Nigerian students who wish to study in the UK will be able to apply for their visa through Tier 4 of the new streamlined Points Based System.

Under the new transparent system, Nigerian students will need to prove that they have been accepted onto a course run by an education institution which is a UK Border Agency (UKBA) licensed Tier 4 sponsor. They will also need to prove that they have the means to support themselves, and supply their biometric details at their nearest visa application centre.

If granted a visa, the new regulations allow international students to undertake part-time work of up to 20 hours per week during term time, full time work during the holidays and undertake any course related work placements.

Jason Ivory, the UKBA Operations Manager in a statement by the British High Commission, said "Nigerian students have a lot to gain from studying in the UK and can now see whether they are eligible for a visa before they even apply - making the system much clearer and easier to understand. The aim is to make the application process more transparent and straightforward.

"For the first time, all independent fee-paying schools, colleges and universities that want to accept international students to study with them now need a licence to do so.

"This will help the UK Government crack down on bogus colleges, something which will be welcome news to many Nigerian students." who can now be sure the language school, college or university they intend to study at is an approved educational institution.

"So far over a thousand UK institutions have signed up to sponsor international students".
