PoliticsAbia Guber: Ikpeazu Urges Tribunal To Dismiss Otti’s Petition by BleedingPen(op): 6:50pm On Aug 30, 2019
Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu on Thursday asked the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Umuahia, to dismiss the petition filed by Alex Otti, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV reports that Otti is the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate for the 2019 poll, while incumbent Governor Ikpeazu contested and won a second term on the PDP platform.

Otti, who is challenging the victory of Ikpeazu in the March 9 governorship poll, alleged massive irregularities in 15 of 17 Local Government Areas in the state.

Adopting his final written address, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), lead counsel for Ikpeazu, urged the panel to dismiss the petitioner’s (Otti) case for lacking in merit.

He argued that the main document which the petitioners were relying on was procured after their petition had been filed.

On its part, INEC, the second respondent, said the documents tendered by the petitioners did not conform with the schedule of the electoral law, urging the panel to disregard the petition.

But Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), lead counsel for the petitioners, urged the panel to dismiss the objections of the respondents.

He claimed that the aspect of the law in which they were relying upon in their arguments with respect to the use of smart card readers had been changed.

Fagbemi also countered the submission of Olanipekun, saying that INEC never disowned the documents tendered by the petitioners.

After listening to all arguments in the matter, Chairman of the panel, Justice Lekan Ogumonye, reserved judgment for a date to be communicated to all parties.

The Federal Government says the report that 23 Nigerians convicted for various drug offences in Saudi Arabia have been executed is false, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV recalls that there's been a trending report in the media with the names of the convicts awaiting execution in various Saudi prisons for drug related offences.

But in a statement obtained by Igbere TV, Ferdinand Nwonye, Spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the report should be disregarded.

“Furthermore, the Nigerian Mission was not informed of the arrests and trials. The Federal Government is, therefore, engaging the Saudi authorities through diplomatic channels with a view to finding a just solution”, the statement partly read.

PoliticsSee The List Of Ministers Who Retained Their Portfolios In Buhari’s Second Term by BleedingPen(op): 11:50pm On Aug 21, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, formally inaugurated his cabinet 84 days after taking the oath of office for a second term, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV had reported that 43 new Ministers (including the SGF) were sworn in at the presidential villa, Abuja, after taking oath of office.

Some slight changes were however, observed from the portfolio assigned them. About 13 ministers who had served under the President's first term were returned, with some retaining their former positions.

Igbere TV gathers some former cabinet members who retained similar roles to include;

Muhammed Bello, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory; Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Transportation and Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister of Foreign Affairs, who all served in Buhari’s first term.

All the 13 ministers from the old cabinet are to continue with the portfolios they had in the old cabinet except for the following;

Babatunde Fashola, Osagie Ehanire, Rotimi Amaechi and Zainab Ahmed whose roles were slightly changed.

While Power was removed from Fashola’s brief, and Aviation carved out of Amaechi’s Transportation, Ehanire was elevated from Minister of State for Health to the Minister of Health while Ahmed’s Ministry was expanded to Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning.

This is even as the President retained his position as the Minister of Petroleum Resources, a position he has held since 2015. He named Timipre Sylva, former governor of Bayelsa, as his subordinate (Minister of State for Petroleum). Ibe Kachukwu, who was in that role, did not make it to the new cabinet.

PoliticsProfile Of Buhari’s New Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva (Photo) by BleedingPen(op):
55-year-old Mr Timipre Sylva, has been announced as the new Minister of State for Petroleum by President Muhammadu Buhari, Igbere TV reports.

Born on July 7, 1964, Mr Sylva takes over from the immediate past minister, Dr Ibe Kachikwu who lost his re-nomination bid last month.

Sylva, who hails from Okpoama-Brass in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, is a former governor of the state. He has also served as a member of the state assembly in the 90’s.

As a candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sylva won the Bayelsa gubernatorial election on May 29, 2007 and succeeded Dr Goodluck Jonathan who went on to the position of Nigeria’s vice president.
Sylva's opponent in the 2007 election, Ebitimi Amgbare of the Action Congress (AC), legally challenged his victory. Although the Bayelsa State Election Petitions Tribunal upheld Sylva's election, Amgbare took the matter to the Appeal Court in Port Harcourt which overturned the Tribunal's decision and nullified Sylva's election on April 15, 2008. The Appeal Court's five justices were unanimous in their decision and ordered that Speaker Werinipre Seibarugo be sworn in to replace Sylva as acting Governor, with a new election to be held within three months.

A new election was held on May 24, 2008, and Sylva, again running as the PDP candidate, was overwhelmingly elected with 588,204 out of about 598,000 votes. He was sworn in again on May 27, 2008. On January 27, 2012, his tenure was terminated by the Supreme Court with an acting governor appointed to oversee the state until the election of February 2012.

In 2013, Sylva dumped the PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC), following a disagreement with his boss and former president, Goodluck Jonathan.

He had accused Goodluck Jonathan of orchestrating attacks against him and his government when they were in power.

Mr Sylva said the former president’s dislike for his emergence as governor of Bayelsa State led to the annulment of his election in 2008.

In 2013, Sylva was charged for money laundering and corrupt practices by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He forfeited 48 properties to the anti-graft agency during trial.

But in a dramatic twist of event, the EFCC returned the 48 properties to the former governor on 23, Jan., 2013, few months after joining the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Mr Sylva is happily married with three children — Timipre Sylva, Pagabio Sylva, and Taria Sylva.

Igbere TV had reported that President Buhari, on Wednesday, formally assigned portfolios to all 43 ministerial-designates, three months after his inauguration for a second term.

He had last month, sent the list of ministers to the Nigerian Senate for screening and confirmation, in an exercise that lasted five days.

The Senator told journalists at the airport that the attack is not a representation of the character of the majority of Nigerians.

He reiterated his stance that he had forgiven his attackers and would not be seeking their punishment.

Ekweremadu was billed to give a keynote address on Saturday at the Second Annual Cultural Festival and Convention organised by Ndi-Igbo Germany in Nuremberg before he was lynched.

The lawmaker was accused by IPOB members of conspiring with the Federal Government to proscribe the group in the South East and the killing of its followers.

PoliticsPolice Arrest 100 Pro-Biafran Supporters In Bayelsa by BleedingPen(op): 11:12am On Aug 18, 2019
The police in Bayelsa has arrested over 100 members of the Biafra Nations Youth League (BNYL), who were on their way to the inauguration of Biafra National Council (BNC) in the state, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV had previously reported that ex Deltan militant, Asari Dokubo, in a statement, said he was inaugurating the BNC to support the IPOB’s Biafra movement and agitation.

An official of the group, Geoffrey Nwosoriba, who confirmed the development to Igbere TV, said the members were on their way to the event when they were arrested and whisked away.

Nwosoriba, who doubles as Secretary to the BNC, said; “I escaped from the arrest along Bayelsa junction. Right now about 100 of our members have been taken to State CID in Yenagoa.

“The Police has not explained what our offences are.”

Meanwhile, some angry Bayelsan youth, on Saturday, chased out Asari Dokubo from venue of the inauguration of the BNC, disrupting the exercise, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV gathered that trouble started when Chairman of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC), Kennedy Olorogun, got wind of the meeting and mobilized his council members and other youths to the venue of the gathering.

Olorogun was said to be angry that Dokubo chose Bayelsa, a homogeneous Ijaw state, to hold such meeting and ordered the founder of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF) to leave the state or face the wrath of the youths.

He alleged that Dokubo gathered over 300 persons from across the states in the South-East and South-South regions to hold the meeting.

According to him, the meeting was reportedly convened under the auspices of the Biafra National Council (BNC) and not the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Olorogun said over 300 persons including Dokubo were already gathered at a hotel in Yenagoa when he led Ijaw youths to the place.

He said quarrel ensued between him and Dokubo when he told the former militant leader that the meeting would not hold in Ijawland.

“When we got the information, we stormed the venue of the meeting to stop them.

“They tried to resist us but we told them we were prepared for them because we will not allow any part of Bayelsa to be used for a meeting calling for the actualisation of Biafra.

“I wonder why Dokubo decided to bring such meeting to Bayelsa. But we stopped them.

“It was getting out of hand but the police intervened to stop possible violence. My happiness is that we stopped the meeting from holding,” he told journalists.

PoliticsSouth-East Governors React To IPOB’s Attack On Sight Order by BleedingPen(op): 10:17am On Aug 18, 2019
Governors in the South-East have reacted to the ‘attack on sight’ order issued against them by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV had reported that the IPOB gave a matching order to its members across the world to attack the Governors of Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia and Anambra States anywhere they are seen.

This comes barely 24 hours after Senator Ike Ekweremadu, immediate past Deputy Senate President, was attacked by suspected members of the group in Germany, on Saturday.

Reacting in a statement made available to Igbere TV, Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi, said Biafra cannot be achieved without the governors, adding that assaulting them was not the solution to the agitation.

Umahi, who doubles as Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, said they had no problem with the group to warrant such an order, adding that the insecurity in the region was a nationwide challenge which was under the Federal Government’s command and control.

While condemning the attack on Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Umahi said, “If there is any issue IPOB holds against the governors, they should come home to settle it in Igboland instead of a foreign land.

“What happened was a security issue which was within the purview of the Federal Government. Attacking governors in a foreign land is a wild goose chase. We love them because they are our children.

“IPOB cannot achieve Biafra alone, except with the collaboration of all stakeholders including the governors. They don’t need to attack the governors to achieve Biafra.”

The governors’ forum warned members of the IPOB not to allow political opportunists to use them to destroy the South-East region.

“They should come together and work with the governors and the Ohanaeze Ndigbo to achieve the Igbo Presidency come 2023 instead of fighting the governors. We want them to be close to us instead of taking the struggle to the international arena,” it said.

Governor Umahi, however, described the IPOB’s threats as empty, saying the group lacked the powers to track down any South-East governor anywhere in the world.

“They have no such spread and powers to track down South-East governors for attack anywhere in the world. They are too small. I don’t want to say they sound so cowardly, but they can’t see the governors to attack,” he added.

PoliticsOgun State Government Launches Jobs Portal, Ogunjobs by BleedingPen(op): 11:55pm On Aug 17, 2019
The Ogun State Government, on Thursday, finally launched the much publicized jobs portal for residents of the state, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV had reported that the state government said it was launching a dedicated website to ease job application and also to know the number of unemployed in the state.

Dignitaries who graced the occasion include the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, and other top government functionaries.

Our correspondent who monitored the event reports that the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, also announced the appointment of Jobberman’s co-founder, Mr Lekan Olude as Special Adviser on Job Creation and Youth Empowerment.

During the event, a two-hour test run was held where over 5,000 applications were received. 20 applicants were given automatic employment right there at the launch.

A statement issued by Governor Abiodun and made available to Igbere TV, on Friday, reads...

“Today(on Thursday) in Abeokuta, we officially launched the much anticipated Ogun Jobs Portal which is one of the initiatives of our government to take the good people of Ogun State out of unemployment while also bettering the career chances of the employed and business owners.

“The Portal is particularly suited to prepare our people to fit into appropriate sectors, while we currently revitalise all the sectors of our State's economy.

“It also provides a daily registration platform that avails both the unemployed and the employed, job and training opportunities, in a bid to continuously tackle Nigeria's 23.1 per cent unemployment rate.

“As a government, we are aware that this cannot be singlehandedly done but in cooperation with the private sector through a viable Public-Private Partnership (PPP).

“We are currently working on a Local Content Bill which would be sent to the State House of Assembly and on its return, ensure that investors look inward the State for human resources when they site their companies here.

“Also, Mr Lekan Olude, co-founder of Jobberman, a leading human resource management firm, has been appointed Special Adviser on Job Creation and Youth Empowerment to facilitate collaboration with employers and agencies.

“I am glad to announce that because of the staggering 5,000-candidate response we got when we earlier did a 2-hour test run, 20 job applicants were immediately given employment at the Launch.

“On this note, I implore the good people of Ogun State, especially the youth, to make the best use of this socio-economic initiative that is open to all, and shun crime and violence.”
