I salute Blows_job for creating this thread. It takes courage, not a small one sef.
Haba, but people can be judgmental sha. Stuffs happen to people at different point in time that determine their decisions.

Stop forming abeg, almost everybody wanna relocate to America. Be it Nigerians, Mexicans, Chinese, Ghanaians etc. That people change status especially on B1/B2 visa isn't peculiar to Nigerians alone. In my few years of staying in the US, I have seen enough.

Can I encourage anybody to relocate/change status here,oh yes! My own personal opinion, I prefer to stay in a sane environment pls. Naija too hard and harsh. Naija is like jungle, survival of the fittest grin

My short story of getting here. Few years ago,I came for a family vacation, my husband and my 2 children. Hubby had a good job with take home of like 20k that time. I was also in academics,so my pay too was ok, like 120k. We applied based on that, truthfully oh, and we were granted B1/B2 visa. Hubby just got a mail on our third night in the US,guess what,na sack letter! Gobe leyi ooooo.

We were devastated, didn't know what to do next. We just decided to manage stay for the remaining vacation period and head back home. But I told my mum about my husband sack letter. She come remember that one of her long lost family friends(Mr A) dey Yankee. We got the man contact and link up with him. We explained our situation to him and the man said our best bet is to stay put for Yankee oh. Naija hard na, hubby will come back home come to join the endless ocean of job seekers.

But Mr A over try for us no be small. He engaged ones of his friends wey be immigration lawyer to put us thru. Mr A offered to do marriage with me and he arranged one white lady to marry my husband, all at no cost. I won't go too deep into it more than this so it won't look as if I dey encourage bad bad thing oh lipsrsealed

We don get our Pali now, doing well in the US. We don't do crime or move with bad gang. And we be employer of labor.

My advice to anybody coming, be focus. It will be tough,no matter the means you come in with,it going to be tough. Naija work etiquette is quite different from Yankee own oh.

Now I'm waiting for supreme court judges to come judge this my matter now.....mchewwww.
Blows_jobs,I'm sorry for my long epistle on your thread.

it's okay. Everything na lesson.

This back and forth about who can come to yankee and who shouldn't come to yankee is getting on my nerves.

Let people (adults) make decision of their lives they can live on. Whatever consequences that follow will be on them.

We can only advise and let them know alternative ways not CONDEMN their decisions in its totality. Whether the advise is taken or not, wish them "goodluck"

So far you are not providing a "workable, better naija", let people who chooses to migrate do it.

Thanks blowjobs for the wonderful thread.

My aunt is connecting me to an NGO that that helps young people from humble background to secure visa and work in usa.

NB: The NGO gets the visa for the candidate ( I think the company will fill for the visa from the usa)
When the person get there, you will be working for the company as an unskilled employee.

Now my question,
1 What class of visa will be issued to me?
2 How possible/easy will it be for me to adjust status to have a green card ?
3 Can I be able to marry a USC if I desire and how easy can I find a partner?
4 Can I enrol into the university while working?

Please I'm a newbie, enlighten me before I make a costly mistake.

NGO can't get visa for you. They can provide you with the paper work. you still need to be qualified and appear for interview

I wouldn't know the class of visa. Let your Aunt tell you the class of visa (it however sounds shady to me)

Depends on your class of visa, mode of entry and immigration status. you have to qualify to adjust status first (some class of visa and immigration status do not qualify)

You can marry anyone you want as long as you are obeying the laws of the land (don't be like Roy Moore and start chasing underage girls in the mall)

How easy to find a partner? Well depends on you. How easy do you attract people? Are you friendly? what do you want in a partner? what kind of lady tickles your fancy? Do you like them big or small? Do you like the party or the church? Are you a good "toaster"? can you make a lady's heart "melt", Can you "make it rain".. these are few questions you need to ask yourself grin grin

Your category of visa will tell if you can enroll in a college or not.

I don't know if it easy, and honestly don't care if its easy, the people I referenced to in my example are not your average Nigerians like me (yes, even me, no smart), they got multiple offers from different countries, they are the intellectual cream of the crop, for them they get easy migration, no matter how many trumps fill the white house, or right wing parties take over the western world; and honestly, Twoods, kind of fits the class of people I described.
EDIT: as the world kills of manual labour, there is constant need for highly specialised minds in tech, there was an article in the economist, where Data science and AI post graduate student all got jobs 6 months to graduation, Doctoral students in stem have 36-48months OPT extension, and in some cases, can file for themselves, and where they find themselves in academia or not for profit research, they are not counted in the H1-B quota

How many Nigerians are in this category under the percentage of Nigerians studying in the US.

Nigerians in specialized fields have wide range of options and usually, US is always the last of them

I'm not twoods, or know him personally; but the people like him, I know who are citizens started like this.
1) Awesome education profile from naija; First class, 2.1, >4.0GPA
2) Gained admission to A/B+/B- schools for a doctorate, in STEM related field
3)spent 4+ years on a fully funded PhD contributing to scientific advancement
4)Completed the doctorate, and got snapped up some fortune 500's
5) H1-B filed
6) Then comes The green card
7) and finally, the blue passport.

And you guys think it is that easy?. A lot of people that finally completed their PhD in the US moved to Canada to become a permanent resident (Canada will give you straight PR comparing to America). When y'all come here, you will realize that becoming PR isn't as easy as A,B,C regardless of class of visa or type of occupation. It takes years and years of waiting.

A lot of folks discourage others from coming to America and when you check their background, you will realized that they also went through something like that in the past (probably had to marry an ugly old white lady to get their PR eventually when they get tired of the mountains of re-application for work authorization). Now that they are citizen and been living here for years, they start acting like they were there when the US constitution got written. They act more American than even the naturally born Citizens.

All we are saying on this forum is advise people about their situation, let then know the repercussions of the decisions they are about to make, give them other options they can explore and wish them all the best. That's all.

I got my visa (B1). Moving to the US by March..I do not know anyone there, but trust me,I'm gon pull through. It will be difficult at first...but I give myself 3 months & I will stabilize. All he 'holier than thous' should not come here and tell me how people like me give an already useless country a bad name. I'm not relocating to do crime, but to work.. And work I shall..legal or not.

I don suffer enough for 9ja. Putting in so much work & still can't afford my basics. What kind of hopeless life is that?

Thanks BJ for being so open & truthful. Someday,I'm gon remind & probably send you gifts for being so real.
Pls, do you think $2k will be enough to start off? Any advice you can give me?

I'll like the gift okay. But please send them when you become a Permanent resident. i"ll gladly provide my address.

I am not For or Against your move. You do what makes you happy. Regardless of the decision you make, don't forget to do what brings you fulfillment.

it is gonna be tough without knowing anyone here, like really really tough. I'd advise you to link up with anyone that can host you for at least 2-3 months (friends of friends, extended family, old high school friends, etc)
Per work related, i can't advise you on that (you'll figure things out yourself when you arrive). It will be illegal for me to advise you based on the forum principle.
Also 2k$ will not be enough (especially if you don't know anyone), hold as much as you can get. The essentials you need to come with is your travel luggage (visiting people category), you don't need lots of clothes. If i were you, i'd pack 5-7Jeans trousers , 3-5 underwears (singlets and boxers), 2-4 shirts/T-shirts, Tooth brush etc. I'd mail my certificates and qualifications to the address i am going to (or instruct someone to mail it to the address i provide after), I'll come with my drivers license just in case and most importantly prove of my visit. Any other thing is an overdo.

Mod, abeg no hide the posts.

I am enjoying the "For and against "

"Stay in Naija and continue to endure hoping things will be better"

"Travel to America abd try your hands on new adventure"

This is interesting...

Why should the young man continue to stay in Nigeria when America offers so much hope?

Why should the young man abuse the bond on his visa"?

In America, this actually a good advice. Maybe not twice a week. 5times in 7 days or bathing after work instead of before work.
You no sweat, no dust so wetin wan make your body smell if you wear deodorant?

Look at the start of snow days.
It is beautiful. And quiet.

There is an explanation of why it feta quiet during winter/sniw storm.

The snow drops traps sounds ( or air, i think, i have to look it up again)

My answer to you people asking me when am I coming home is simple. I and Nigeria are like parallel lines(for now). I ain't coming nowhere. I have endured sufferness in Nigeria, when it gets better, I will only come and reap the sweetness and come back here again. I HAVE SUFFERED ENOUGH IN NIGERIA.. Tell your leaders to fix up Nigeria. I even sleep in a house without burglary proof without any fear.

I am full blooded Nigerian but God Bless America.

Apologies to people living in Nigeria but I gave up on Nigeria loong time ago.

Thanks to my american wife that took me out on Nigeria

Signed

Your post is making me laugh.. grin grin grin..
When are you back home bro grin

PS: after a while in yankee, after all those sky scrapers, tarred roads, fine fine girls and "god bless America" wear off your face, you will miss "home". Me, i miss the Caribbean. The best "enjoyment" i ever experienced was in the caribbean.

The big difference I have seen here in the US concerning justice is that Whites are always given the benefits of doubts when a crime is committed. It is as if people just automatically assume that White people don’t do crime. People and the justice systems make excuses for whites committing crimes. I have seen it several times happening.
So, black and white people don’t really get the same justice. Working with guy M, I have had stories upon stories from them (guy M and R) how they use to party while younger, do drugs (cocaine, heroin etc) over and over and over. Now in their 50’s they have been sober for a long time, clean up and own their business and doing well for themselves. I have been told the same stories about people close to them. Majority got clean and are well to do now.
The thing is when it come to AA, no one give second chances. You don’t get that second option of going to rehab or getting clean. You get jail time. Go to jail for some years, you come out, it stays on your record, you can’t get a job or carry out some certain functions. You kinda end up in the cycle.
I am not making excuses for anyone doing crime. I am just saying that When it comes to Whites and Blacks, People want white teens/young adults to just be kids and make excuses for their irresponsible ways by saying “kids will be kids” but when it comes to the same black kids, they get to face the full wrath of the justice system.
