“We are still practicing livestock the way it was 100 years ago. Other countries have long embraced ranching systems. It is sad that Nigeria is lagging behind countries like Kenya, Ethiopia, even Sudan in modern livestock farming”, he said.
How primitive, others could have took on the challenge but they didn't in mass. The only thing I want to know is how much are the ranchers going to pay to use these facilities. They said multiple times they wont own the land. Nigeria should just take beef off the import ban list if they want cheaper prices.
Ps: Does anyone know if Nigerias milk import ban spurred production of milk worked been successful?
The Kogi state government is ready for the speedy implementation of the Rural Urban Grazing Area (RUGA) programme otherwise called the National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLIP).
The state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello made the promise after a-two day training session organised by the National Office of the Livestock Transformation Plan for the state’s Steering Committee (SC) and Project Management Office (PMO).
Governor Bello, in his remark, harped on the economic importance of the project while pledging his government’s readiness to begin implementation with the assurance of giving necessary support to the state project office in actualising the objectives of the project.
State coordinator of the project, Dr. Olufemi Bolarin revealed that the capacity of the state livestock transformation officers had been built to turn the objectives of the project into success.
According to him, the National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLTP) is a project designed by the federal government with focus on modernising livestock production in the country as well as put to rest, incidences of farmers, herders’ clashes.
He also explained that the training would prepare the state livestock transformation officers for the task of delivering on the job, stressing that they had been equipped with the knowledge on the modern means of livestock management.
“We are still practicing livestock the way it was 100 years ago. Other countries have long embraced ranching systems. It is sad that Nigeria is lagging behind countries like Kenya, Ethiopia, even Sudan in modern livestock farming”, he said.
On the benefits of the project to the state, Dr. Bolarin maintained that it would settle the prevailing mistrust between the herders, farmers and the communities that often arises from competition for water and land.
Free grazing range by herders, he pointed out, would be made impossible, as model ranches provided with basic social facilities, would be set up to make life easier for those involved in livestock business across the state.
The project, he said, would also empower those in the rural communities to go into livestock production or embrace fodder crop production like soya beans as well as cultivation of grasses which would be processed into pellets as feeds for animals, and this he emphasised, would translate into huge economic benefits for the farmers.
Alternate chairman of the state steering committee, Hon Asiwaju Idris Asiru, expressed the commitment of the state government to the success of the project.
Asiwaju, who is also the state Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, noted that the project would open up myriads of opportunities for the state and its people, besides taking care of herders and farmers clashes.
Lol the article contradicts itself. Niger Republic has economic importance because they need a port to export from. Benin is building rails with them for the same reason. The article has a few good points but it didnt do a good job addressing them.
1. Amaechi claimed it will help them export oil. They're planning to build a pipeline into Benin for that reason.
2. Will Lekki deep seaport be as efficient as Cotonou. If the answer is yes it would be a good alternative for them.
3. Will the cargo and passenger traffic justify the debt. Nobody actually did the math on it.
4. Will NIS do they're jobs. Traveling Internationally on rail is no different from airports. You need to have your passport to use the service.
A bill for the legalisation and usage of non-toxicant cannabis plants for medical and scientific research is presently before the House of Representatives.
The bill, which was presented by Rep. Princess Miriam Onuoha, representing Okigwe North of Imo State, has passed the second reading.
This was disclosed by Dr. Tonye Jaja Clinton, a legal practitioner, during a media parley organized by Grow Cann Africa in Abuja on the benefits and opportunities of cannabis plants and CBD oil.
He said once the bill becomes law, Nigeria has a lot to gain economically.
Jakumo: I strongly believe that it is President Buhari that will legalize marijuana in Nigeria, and thereby transform the economy of the nation for the better, literally overnight. Nigeria is blessed with highly fertile agricultural soil, ideal tropical weather, and consistent daylight hours, year round, all of which combine to make Nigeria a cannabis growing PARADISE, just waiting to be so recognized by the laws of the land.
Lol do you still believe Buhari wants to legalize weed?
Lol you clowns are so ignorant it's crazy. None of the countries except Togo met the criteria in the first place. The pandemic has made this goal harder. It's not frances fault you guys could achieve your goals after 20 years on talking about it. Who cares if the former CFA countries arent in the monetary union immediately? Not every country in the eurozone is in it. If they haven't met criteria to join there's no need crying.
Nigeria should focus on meeting the establishes criteria instead mumu conspiracies. Nigeria along with bigger economies in the region will be carrying the project anyway.
FieldMarshall06: So the project was delayed when Ouattata and Macron changed CFA to Eco, without Ecowas.
You are just a stupid fool.
Mumu stop exposing your foolishness to the world. Macron didnt change anything. Them changing the name of their currency doesn't matter in the slightest. If they call it zeni, beri or dollar it doesn't stop you from implementing anything. The fact is none of the countries except togo in 2019 met critea to for eco currency as stated by Nigerias finance minister you mentally challenged conspiracy theorists.
Ahmed, noted that Nigeria had nonetheless continued to record progress towards meeting the macroeconomic criteria, particular as it regards its debt levels.
Specifically, the minister said Togo remained the only country that has met the convergence criteria within the last two years, a development which makes it difficult to operationalise the proposed currency union, which is already christened as 'ECO'.
The four primary criteria to be achieved by each member country are: a single-digit inflation rate at the end of each year; a fiscal deficit of no more than four per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP); a central bank deficit-financing of no more than 10 per cent of the previous year's tax revenue, and gross external reserves that can give import cover for a minimum of three months.
On the other hand, the six secondary criteria to be achieved by each member country are: Prohibition of new domestic default payments and liquidation of existing ones; tax revenue should be equal to or greater than 20 percent of the GDP; wage bill to tax revenue equal to or less than 35 per cent; public investment to tax revenue equal to or greater than 20 per cent; a stable real exchange rate, and positive real interest rate.
Babanah: It’s all about economics my friend, within the euro zone Germany has the strongest economy. It’s uses it’s economic muscle to support the zone. Most of the borrowing is bankrolled by Germany. Within the euro Zone you also have stresses and strains, between the more advanced countries like Germany, the Netherlands and France and the southern countries like Spain and Italy.
To get into monetary union there are a number of huddles to cross, bring public sector borrowing within a similar range among member countries. There is the need for interest rate alignment before you can head towards monetary union.
The euro is strong because of the economies behind it Germany France Netherlands etc. Which economy within Ecowas is strong enough to back the proposed West African currency?
Lol nairaland conspiracy theories are the dumbest on the internet. In their minds the project isn't delayed because none of the member countries met the requirements they layed out but because the french boogieman. Lol ignorance mixed with delusions of grandeur are the cause if this madness.
dracula95: Lol, it seems you have many enemies. face your enemies and stop dragging me in your mess. blue blue pussy boy .
Smh ok loser keep following me since your life clearly revolves around me. Hopefully you dont pass on your mental illness to your kids assuming some women is dumb enough to breed with you.
Nice she might finally get her pay day for that beating she took. Lol Mr Crusader for christ is sorry but will probably do everything in his power to avoid paying her.
THE Biafra Nations Youth League, BNYL, has formed an alliance with Southern Cameroon's separatist group, Ambazonia, in pursuant to secession from their respective countries to become independent nations.
Arising from BNYL's convention in Enugu, during the weekend, attended by representatives of Cameroon's Ambazonia, BNYL leader, Princewill Chimezie said that the collaboration of the two agitating groups had been on for a long time but was being re-engineered to give stronger voice for their self-determination pursuits.
Chimezie disclosed that the Enugu convention was predicated on how to re-strategize and encourage self-defense mechanisms for Biafrans and Ambazonians in the escalating security challenges facing the people of Eastern Nigeria and Southern Cameroon.
He noted that BNYL was a multi-national pro-Biafra group whose membership were drawn from all the ethnic nationalities in the former Eastern Nigeria that were parts of the defunct Republic of Biafra led by General Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu between 1967 and 1970.
Chimezie said: "We resolved to defend ourselves by any means possible and we are not afraid to say that because we can't continue to sit down and watch enemies massacre our people. I am afraid we may resort to guerilla movement. We have been most prominent in the Bakassi areas where we developed partnership with Ambazonia because we found out that Biafra has a similar problem with southern Cameroon.
"Ambazonia needs our help just as we need theirs. We have both had affinity to achieve independence in different ways and the collaboration is meant to hear one another's cry."
One of the Ambazonia's representatives and President of Universal Negro Improvement Association, UNIA in Calabar Cross River state, Comrade Enow Arrey said he was a refugee in Nigeria because of the horrible killings of Ambazonians in Southern Cameroon.
Arrey said: "I found out that my brothers in Nigeria have the same problem with Southern Cameroon people. My mission is to speak that Africa has the right to decolonize their place. We've decided that our people must be one as they were before colonization.
"UNIA will support the Biafra movement before we can deserve respect. We are fighting for peace in Cameroon and if that peace needs a separate state, we will do that. The peace is either for federalism or separation, just like we are in support of self-defense."
Lagos — The China Civil Engineering and Construction Corporation (CCECC) has completed the laying of the double tracks of the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge project to Ebute-Metta Junction (EBJ) inside the premises of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) in Lagos as Nigerians await the commencement of commercial activities on the corridor.
Daily Trust reports that with the completion of the tracks laying, the contractor is set to continue from EBJ to the nation's premier ports, Apapa, a feat that would transform the nation's economic landscape, enable massive movement of cargoes and ease port congestion.
Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge
The $1.7bn Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge project which is 157-kilometer long started in March 2017 as part of the railway modernization drive of the Federal Government.
It is the LOT two of the Lagos-Kano project initiated under the modernization project to drive economic activities in the country going by the prospect of railways in massive transportation of goods and passengers.
NRC had done a trial run from Iju in Lagos to Ibadan, conveying passengers for free. However, the oversubscribed service stopped due to COVID-19.
Congestion at Ports
To ease the congestion in Apapa ports, the project scope was expanded to Apapa ports, and our checks showed that works have reached an advanced stage to get the tracks to Apapa.
An engineer on site, Engr. Tunde Imoletan, confirmed that road pavement is almost completed.
"We are doing the surface dressing which would be followed by the laying of sub-grade, then laying of sub-ballast. After that the track laying will commence.
"The track laying doesn't really take time. What takes time are the earthworks. Immediately we finish with the surface dressing, lying on a sub-ballast which has passed Iganmu and we are approaching Ijora, the track laying will commence."
The distance from EBJ to the Port complex is 7km and the track is designed to link three major terminals in the ports including the Apapa Bulk Terminal Limited (ABTL), ENL Port and Terminal and APM Terminal.
About 24 new coaches have been delivered ahead of the commencement of operations on the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge service.
Managing Director of NRC, Engr. Fidet Okhiria had disclosed that the operations would start with 16 trips daily from Lagos to Ibadan while full-blown service commences in 2021.
Mr. Fidelis Ogbonna, who works at Apapa and uses the narrow gauge train from Iddo to Agbado, said he looks forward to the commencement of commercial activities on the standard gauge which he said is faster to travel with."
Edeme Kelikume, a haulage expert said the standard gauge would unlock the nation's economy.
obailala: Niger is a landlocked oil producing country, and I imagine their closest seaports should be Cotonou and Lagos. A railway like this could easily divert a chunk of their import traffic through Lagos, yet 12 pages are already filled with comments from self acclaimed 'EXPERTS' who are so sure this project has no economic viability.
I would be surprised if the govt of Niger wouldnt even have financial stakes in a project like this.
Amaechi did admit in 2018 they dont have a financial stake in the project I have seen news to the contrary. I easily found articles and reports detailing their interest and stake in the Benin Niger rail line. The only hold up on that one is court cases.
The financial benefits of the project are obvious considering Nigeria has been wanting their business for years. Niger has always preferred Benin though.
“The Niger government is not contributing to the project and they do not need to do so. We have to also provide the same infrastructure that makes them go to other countries for business. Those countries already have the access and that is why Niger can go there go there for business.”
