PoliticsRe: Why PDP and APC Candidates Don't Debate. by Blue3k(op): 2:01pm On Oct 13, 2022
Maazieze:
we should have debates, people should know the intelligence level of their candidate...

Vote wisely!
There are debates but the major parties don't show up. They know their supporters don't care and they'd win regardless. The only scenarios I see the major Candiates debating is if they're challenged by eachother or there's polling showing minor party is going to win. Its understandable why they don't risk of debates with little reward. If both APC or PDP were to lose this cycle they'd probably participate in debates the next.
PoliticsRe: Why PDP and APC Candidates Don't Debate. by Blue3k(op): 9:32pm On Oct 12, 2022
honestly The only way to get a these guys to debate eachother would be for APC or PDP to call them out. Other than that it just won't happen. lol both sides know their voters couldn't care less though. Its best to hold rallies and have their loyalist give them free press. Its not like there's too many polling firms anyway.
PoliticsWhy PDP and APC Candidates Don't Debate. by Blue3k(op):
The flag bearers of the party dont debate for 3 reason. It doesn't serve their ambition. There were vice presidential debates in 2018. The Presidential Candiates for APC and PDP skipped it. In other places in the world ducking debates is cowardly especially if you're called out. Its like a champion boxer avoiding a fight with high ranking contenders.

1. A debate mainly changes an undecided voters minds. Zealots and low information voters don't care to look into their candiate or other candidates positions on policy issues. The reality is they don't lose much by ducking debates. Your base will vote at high margin if they're party loyalist.

2. Debating can expose a Candiate bad ideas or lack of rhetorical skills. Political debates aren't purely about policies but about throwing jabs at opponents and playing bases. Think Lock her up chant by Trump for example. It was funny comment that he had no intention of carrying out. In Nigerian content the rhetorical jabs osinbanjo and Obi made about corruption.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMntNTeys1I

3. Debates force candidates to go on record a out their positions. Silence helps candiates stay ambiguous about their positions. A political manifesto or long form interview won't don't give complete details about candidates. It also doesn't give opportunity for their opponents to strike back in real time. Interviewers aren't there to argue they just push conversations by asking follow up questions.

PoliticsRe: Aregbesola: No shortage of Passport Booklets, Apply Months Ahead Of Time by Blue3k(op):
The minister said that as long as Nigerians want a shortcut to passport processing, challenges would continue to occur in the issuance process.
The minister isn't seeing the larger point. Lots of individuals don't wants to wait 6 months for a passport. This is a market opportunity for the government to charge expedite fee. People are willing to pay for premium service so simply provide it. Processing times should be much faster than 6 months. Lastly yall should be mailing these documents after payment.

ps: Check the US fee schedule as a reference.

PoliticsAregbesola: No shortage of Passport Booklets, Apply Months Ahead Of Time by Blue3k(op): 6:27pm On Oct 10, 2022
The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has said that the full digitisation of Nigerian passport processes would be completed by December.

Mr Aregbesola disclosed this when he was featured on the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja.

He said that full digitisation would completely eliminate any form of contact between passport applicants and immigration officers.

According to him, this will eliminate the inherent corruption in the system.

The minister said that the project was one of the priorities of President Muhammadu Buhari's administration.

"We are on it, and by December we will remove any manual processing of passports.

"Now, we still have some manual parts, because files are still manually opened.

"By December, particularly in the busiest passport processing centres, there will be no manual segment of the passport processing, every part of it will be digitised," he added.

According to him, there is no shortage of passport booklets in the country and advised applicants to begin the processing of their passports at least six months before the scheduled time of travel.

"If you need a passport now, start the process very early, do not begin the processing efforts two weeks to your travelling.

"If you don't, already you have created problems for yourself, because the system, after capturing, which is enrolment of your data, we harmonise it with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) database," he said.

Aregbesola also urged passport applicants to ensure their names and other information tallies with their details on the National Identity database.

"Every identity document must be the same to ease capturing," he said, adding that even wrong arrangements of names could create delays in the processing of passports.

"You must understand what it is. It is a presidential order that the new passport regime should be such that all data, everything about you as an individual must be the same and harmonised.

"What you have in the passport, which is the most secured identity document, must be the same with every other aspects of you, whether in the bank or at the national identity database.

"When you come to us to register, after filling your form online, you come for data capturing, and what you do there is to harmonise what you have filed in your form and your bio-data as we advance.

"So when your name doesn't tally with what we have, your data information is not the same on the relevant platforms, we will have some challenges with passport processing," he said.

Don't patronise touts, corrupt NIS officials

Mr Aregbesola also urged Nigerians to stop patronising touts, scammers and unscrupulous immigration officials when applying for Nigerian passports.

He said this was necessary to stop corruption in the system.

He said Nigerians must resolve to send the touts, scammers and unscrupulous immigration officials out of business.

"An illegitimate business company had been created around passport.

"It requires commitment, dedication and participation of Nigerians in eliminating and getting rid of such illegitimate business," he said.

The minister said that as long as Nigerians want a shortcut to passport processing, challenges would continue to occur in the issuance process.

According to him, those who patronise touts and unscrupulous passport officials are the ones mostly facing challenges with the process.

He, therefore, said passport applicants must follow due process and help to eliminate corruption and infuse integrity into passport administration.

"Please, shun any appeal to get the passport through a third party, tout or scammers, by, first of all, starting the process early.

"If I want to recommend, I will say begin, unless there is an emergency, begin the processing six months to either the expiration or renewal or getting a new one.

"If you start six months ahead, there will be no issue at all. And why is six months recommended by me? Because that is the minimum period that you can even process any visa," he said.

Mr Aregbesola said that within the six months, no matter how reckless the human factor involved may be, there would be no anxiety.

The minister called on the media and the public to help in curbing the menace and encourage passport applicants to do the right thing at all times. - Agency Report

Amending constitution is different from Making new laws. If it were new then some protocols need to be passed through but in case of amendment, changes are made in line with the work of committee assign for the job. The issue now is, many of the amended parts of the constitution need state legislatures to scr kn thwmy before they becimw law
I said NASS didn't pass it meaning both houses didn't pass it. You need 2/3 majority before it goes to the state assemblies to ratify the amendment. If you have proof both chambers did such I'll concede that point. Lastly I already said they could force their hands by simply throwing the cost on them and not holding state law offenders by a certain date. They'll rush to pass the law when their foolishness has a onerous price tag attached to it.

Go and review the recently concluded constitution amendment carried out by NASS around February. About 90% of the contentious issues and call for restructuring have been amended/addressed, many items from exclusive list were removed and I think last week Speaker HoR asked State Assemblies to work on what they transmitted to them. Now States can have their prisons as amended if State Assemblies can do the needful....
They haven't done prisons from what I seen. NASS is yet to pass it. If I'm wrong excuse me.

While the idea of making states be responsible for convictions at state level is fine, the resources to be spent in building , equipping and funding state prison annually is going to be cumbersome so except the federal government is shedding their budget for the interior ministry to raise funds to support each state government not all the states would be able to run a decent state prison except you are now looking at the commercialisation of the prisons which as much as it is another idea would open another round of its own corruption at the expense of the lives of the prisoners
I will disagree on that point about states needing federal funds to run their prisons. It would defeat the purpose of saving money if the federal government is still funding their prisons. If States want to pool funds together, tax the population more or cut things that's their head ache. The private private prison plan is another interesting idea. There's 36 states and 36 state governments who will do what works for them.

You’re telling me the majority of those arrested by Sars thrown into Jail have evidencehuh You’ve probably never encountered a police problem before so I won’t want to have an argument with you. Back in the day as a young man, during Christmas period, police goes about raiding people on the streets into their danfos, only those who got immediate cash are let go, the rest you go sleep cell next Monday you go to court, from there to remind for late night movements.

I’m talking about real life situations here, Police stations are filled with cases that shouldn’t go to court, Judges don’t know anything about the case except you have money to spend on the Police IPO, the judge will send you to jail for remind with one flimsy excuse from the IPO.
I'm telling you the majority of people in jail have evidence to justify a trial. Yes they'd probably be guilty if the case runs its course. I dont know the conviction rate in country but I'm guessing its over 50% so odds are they did it. Are you going to tell me every accused rapist, murder, drug dealer is innocent.

How many state Judges monitors their respective state police formations even though it is their constitutional duty to do so monthly to access this same situation.

The problem with Nigeria is corruption and the lack of will for the people in position of government to do their job. If state Judges uses their power as they should, there are so many cases that shouldn’t have gone to court because these police arrest people without any evidence and that’s where the problem starts.

You can’t be looking for solutions at the top of a problem instead of the root.
I don't know the answer to first question. The second paragraph I would disagree with. Before a case goes to court Department of public prosecution recommends it based on the evidence. If the feel the case is too flimsy they won't take go waste time. Nobody likes losing or wasting their time. Judges throw out cases for lack of evidence but most have sufficient evidence to merit a case.

Cases move slow in Nigeria see because their isn't that many many judges for the amount of cases. Texas probably has more judges than all of Lagos and Kano combined

According to him, some of the awaiting trial inmates have stayed longer than the punishment provided by law for the crime they were arrested for.
lol if your Boko Haram or Any other violent criminals get released into your street just know the governor approved it. Alot of these guys can be cut a deal by the prosecutors like time served if they admit guilt and be released. Alot of them stayed longer than their max sentence anyway. If it's a misdemeanor maybe see about expunge record who knows. If its state offenses were talking about then the state assemblies will need get involved eventually.
PoliticsRe: FG Moves To Release 30 Per Cent Of Prisoners Across Nigeria by Blue3k(m):
The minister said that the interface was necessary as more than 90 per cent of the inmates were being held for contravening state laws.

Aregbesola also said that over 70 per cent of the 75,635 inmates at present were awaiting trial.
This shows two fundamental issue with prison system. The federal government shouldn't be housing state local inmates. The solution to the is to decentralised prisons. The simple solution to that long term is amend constitution by deleting prisons from exclusive list. The short term solution is NASS pass a law saying The FG will no longer hold Non federal inmates by December 31, 2024 for example. This will force states to build their own facilities and reduce fiscal burden on the FG.

The second issue is the the difficulty in getting bail in Nigeria. If States could determine their own bail requirements by law or have guidelines for judges we would have so many sitting in jail. The next big solution is offering guilty inmates time served while sitting in jail on trial. Again it reduces fiscal burden and they served their punishment anyway.

ps: It's sad Nigeria current statesman like Aregbesola and Buhari aren't very strategic or smart. Since Prisons are in the exclusive list you can just force the responsibility in the states if you please. Use the Majority post in NASS for something useful. This would give leverage to force states to delete prisons from the exclusive list. Yes strong arming is better than slow consensus building and endless meeting in this case.

Also mandate police to only do security for public events, witness protection, and certain public servants (judges, high ranking politicians etc). Everyone that feels they need extra protection can pay for it. It seems only issue people have with police us holding bags when their police manpower being stretched for our new aristocracy.

Seriously who do we blame for the current crime wave in Nigeria? Is it fair or logical to blame former governors like Peter Obi or Bola Tinubu? I think it be more reasonable to blame current leaders and ruling parties at state and federal level. Do you blame the current crime rise in Kaduna on Buhari, El Rufi, APC or the former governors?

Blue3k:
Notice the NBS hasn't released crime stats since 2017. Its pretty safe to say there's a massive crime wave in Nigeria since then. The excuses about time and money are ridiculous considering Kaduna operates with similar time constraints and less money than the Federal government. If leaders want to make claims of safety or effectiveness it should be backed up by reliable data.

Kaduna crime stats:

Est. 8.9 million population according to Wikipedia.

1192 homicides ~ 13.39 homicides per 100k
The number Homicides increased by 245 which is a 20.55% increase.
3,348 kidnappings ~ 37.62 kidnappings per 100k
