Three migrants spend 11 days on ship’s rudder from Nigeria to Spain
November 29, 2022


Three African migrants have reached the Canary Islands in Spain having spent 11 days on a ship’s rudder from Lagos,according to Daily Mail.
According to the report, the men seemed to have symptoms of dehydration and hypothermia and Spanish authorities hurriedly transferred them to the hospital for medical attention.

This was disclosed by Spain’s maritime safety and rescue society, Salvamento Marítimo’s website on Monday.
It revealed that the migrants sat on the rudder of the Alithini II oil tanker, the vessel which left Lagos, Nigeria, on 17th November, and arrived in Las Palmas on Monday. Las Palmas is the capital of Gran Canaria, one of Spain’s Canary Islands situated off the northwest coast of Africa.

The islands have been a popular gateway for African migrants trying to get to Europe since they are just 100 kilometres west of Morocco at their closest location to the African continent. Spanish data revealed migration by sea to the archipelago moved by 51% in the first five months of the year compared to 2021.
Despite being dangerous, it is not the first time stowaways have been found travelling on the rudder of commercial ships to the Canary Islands.


Last year, a 14-year-old Nigerian boy was interviewed by Spain’s El País newspaper after surviving two weeks on a ship’s rudder. He had also departed from Lagos.
In October 2020, another four people were found by police at Las Palmas after stowing away on the rudder of an oil tanker from Lagos for 10 days.

The economy or GDP of all the French ex colonies in Africa put together is not even up to $300billion talkless of $500billion, all french ex colonies non of them has an annual revenue of upto $30billions, so were would the $500billion come from?

The Franc CFA is not a mechanism of exploitation of Africa it’s just a mechanism of fixed exchange rate between Euro and the currency used by certain African countries. This mechanism can be criticized like any fixed rate of exchange mechanism for instance the Eurozone. It has the same advantages than the Eurozone (stabilization of prices) and the same disadvantages (impossible to devalue your money to have more competitiveness). But the idea that France is exploiting these economies because it holds 50% of the reserves in France is BS, these reserves are paid with an interest of at least 0,75% per year (and not a negative interest as it is said in some propaganda), which is actually more than what is usually paid on reserves. So it doesn’t give any money to France and the Africans don’t lose anything. In any case the amounts involved are small relatively to France. I think this mechanism could be removed or at least the reserves should be transferred to European Central Bank and the currency renamed Euro CFA (CFA standing for Communauté Financière Africaine ie African Financial Community).
Besides that, out of the 10 fastest growing African economies in 2016, 3 of them (Ivory Coast, Senegal and Central African Republic) are in CFA zone (and 2 countries in the top 3):

Why do French colonies in Africa give France billions and billions of dollars every year?
They don’t.

It’s an old disinformation/fake news which comes back periodically when someone wants to bash France (as it was done by Luigi Di Maio recently).

According to this fake news, the 14 African countries of the franc CFA zone would have deposited 500 billion dollars in the CFA reserve system, of which 85% in France. In some version they would even give to France “500 billion per year”. This is so false that people believe it.

The amount deposited in this system is 72 billion, of which 50% is in France. It’s a deposit, as in any Central Bank, because every central bank must have a deposit in gold or any strong currency in order to insure the value of the money it emits. Besides, the aggregate GDP of the 14 African countries of the CFA zone is 222 billion of dollars (source: Franc CFA — Wikipédia), which is 8% of French GDP. You can easily understand that they cannot pay - as some people assert - 500 billion per year. You can also easily understand that even if France was paying 0% interest rate on the 50% of these 72 billion and would use them for whatever, the amount collected would be totally ridiculously low: let’s say we obtain 5% of it, it would be 1,8 billion of interest, which is 0,8% of the GDP of the CFA zone and 0,06% of French GDP.

If you have sense which is obvious you lack, you would know that been a member of CFA has several benefits, hence the reason why some non francophone countries like Equitorial Guinea and Guinea Bissau adopted it as their currency and became members.
