Theflint1: Almost every food and/or chemical production facility needs at least one microbilogist, and one chemist on site to perform qualitative and quantitative analysis at different points within the production cycle...think diapers, biscuit, indomie, custard, soft drinks, alcohol, drugs, cereals...pretty much all consumables and non-consumables that interface with the body needs microbiology and chemistry professionals doing their thing.
So in truth, there are a fair amount of jobs available for these guys out there. I've not even mentioned the jobs in the health sector, or agric...so there are jobs for these guys. The problem I see is a lot of these jobs don't pay well, hence you'd find graduates from these courses branding out post-graduation.
Na recently HR jobs begin mainstream, a lot of companies still get by without needing HR professionals, or sometimes they just look for some senior admin staff to handle on-boarding and either outsource recruitment, or wing it in-house. I know what a microbiologist does and I know the sector their expertise is needed.(Manufacturing, health & medical, food & bevrages, etc) You are only clinging onto straws if u want to claim a microbiologist has more job prospect than HR who can work in all the companies a microbiologist can work and even more like banks, fintech, law firms, etc. |

In Oil companies there are many non STEM roles like Accountant, HR etc. that are open to everyone. You will find everyone competing for them STEM and non STEM Na the same thing we dey talk. Na non STEM based companies work plenty pass in Nigeria . Not studying STEM doesn't put u at any disadvantage. Theflint1: The keyword is decent amount of job opportunities, so the single HR grad getting a job in a structured company doesn't count.
Even using the STEM courses on Nigeria's shit list, you're better off studying any of microbiology, biochem, chemistry, physics, or even Zoology and Botany, than you are studying sociology, psychology, history, political science, ISD, or even HR sef. Speaking based on job opportunities available in these fields. Lolz. U clearly only know about STEM. He say single HR graduate getting job. HR graduate has a chance of getting job in Nigeria more than a graduate of Microbiology any day anytime. Do even know that no matter what business u transact in a company or how small the company is; there will always be job for HR person in that company? I mean Irrespective of the field the company operates, they need HR Person. But same cannot be said for a Microbiology graduate. |

While the most jobs that should be the core for Non Stem e.g Banking, Accounting, even HR, STEM graduates will put themselves in it
When I wan enter banking like 70% of my induction class were STEM guys because they were able to pass aptitude tests while many of us were still keeping an eye out for Oil company Engineering jobs You are making my point for me. You entered banking because the engineering jobs were not forthcoming as the non STEM jobs. I'm sure u would've wanted to work as a chemical engineer in an oil and gas company but how many oil companies dey Nigeria and how many engineering graduates can they absorb as at the time u were out of school? I hope u also know that non STEM graduates work as legal officers, compliance offcers, accountants, treasury officers, HR, etc in the same oil and gas companies Sha? So as STEM graduates dey work for non STEM roles, non STEM graduates sef dey see job for STEM based companies too. It's not a one way traffic |

raumdeuter: The jobs that STEM can do, Non STEM cannot do it The jobs Non STEM can do, STEM can also do it
So you are already at a disadvantage by studying Non STEM
E.g Non STEM cannot become production engineer at Cadbury nor be Microbiologist at LUTH
STEM can end up become CFO at Shell or be an HR director at FCMB Nobody is arguing whether STEM graduate can do non STEM course or not. The bottom line is most of the jobs available in this country are in the non STEM sector. Nigeria is not a country where manufacturing thrives neither is itb country driven by science and technology. That is why u see engineers hustling for non STEM jobs. In actual sense, the person who doesn't study STEM is not losing anything as far as getting job is concerned in Nigeria. But no be only science students dey suffer that lack of jobs in their fields of study...how many persons wey study po science, sociology, psychology, theatre arts, or other non-STEM courses dey really work for their fields post-graduation?
While a fair number of jobs are in the management sciences, unlike STEM jobs that takes STEM grads only, those non-STEM jobs are open for STEM grads as well. Of course I know this, I was only pointing it out to that the only STEM courses that really guarantees u job based on the course u study are basically Medicine, few engineering courses, nursing, etc. The rest na to follow non-STEM graduates drag the same career u ran away from. There are too many things out there for a person to be passionate about, and give their lives meaning...if it's a person's job, great, if it isn't, nothing spoil. The funny thing is na STEM courses wey no go make u money for Naija plenty pass. Popular courses like Fisheries, microbiology, botany, biochemistry, zoology, etc, most of the average persons who graduate from those courses don't get good paying jobs in those fields in Nigeria. In fact, the top 1% who get jobs post graduation ate usually employed in the social sciences ; you see them later going back to take CIPM certification for HR jobs, ICAN for Aidit/big 4 jobs, etc. Most of those courses don't really have prospect in Nigeria like that; a course like Biochemistry will fetch u good job abroad, but in a country like Nigeria where u Wan see research work do? |

Bingo!
What does he want the names and scores of the top 10 to do anyway? I didn't see the part where the aim of the suit was explained. The person asking for the top 10 was last year. He was "fighting" for the young girl who claimed she scored highest only for it to be revealed that she forged the result she was parading. So the lawyer back then thought JAMB playing games by not providing the names and scores of the top 10 candidates hence his request. The girl really pour spit for a whole lot of people's face including myself who never thought a young girl like that could be capable of such level of forgery. This new lawyer is requesting for question and answer of each of the over 1.5m million people that failed JAMB this year because he believes there was a glitch in their system. Initially he claimed it was those that write their exams on the 26th April that were affected by this so.called glitch but now he has further claimed it also affected those who rote on 24th, 25th and 28th April as well. I don't know why anybody would be willing to stick his neck out again on this glitch matter when u don't have evidence and also how bad the last year girl's case turned. GloriousGbola: and what makes you think adults actually have an idea of the market?
i recall 90% of medical students at the end of their course complained that their parents tricked or forced them into med school. most opf them said they would not make the same choice
then the exposure of the adult advising also counts. when i was younger one of my dad's friends told me there was nothing in architecture -= engineering is the way. imagine my shock when i entered the construction industry and saw architects calling the shots
and most people at parent level cannot accurately predict the market - this is worse in nigeria where most people adopt the idea that you must first and foremost chase something that makes money. 10 years before now, anyone mucking around in fintechs would have been told to stop wasting everyones time and go and do serious programming
whatever we tell our children is also challenged by reality. go to any shoprite mall and it is full of kids doing contant creation videos. we can knock it all we want, but we were discussing o this platform some weeks ago how some creators are pulling down the big dough.
it is the same way you have youtube stars and when you see their humble first videos and you wonder what would have been if their parents had insisted that they focus on 'real' jobs. micheal dell literally dropped out of school to build PCs. would you have agreed with that?
the funny thing about commercial viability is that you will see people who are not making it in every course, and you will also see people who are hammering in the same courses. the whole commercial viability talk is subjective. and what you said about passion just drove something home to me - the biggest problem i have with a lot of employees is just that - the work is basically just a job to them. so they put in minimal effort and deliver minimal results. they are unable or unwilling to go the extra mile where you move into performance territory. it is passion that makes you excel in whatever you are doing. that will make you go the extra mile, that will make you keep pushing. When I say commercial viability, I know.whag I'm.saying o. E get some courses wey be say the only hope u have is to finish with first class and hope Ur university retains u as graduate assistant or finish with a string 2.1 and go hustle random.graduate trainee with thousands of other 2.1 graduates. If u are lucky to get a graduate trainee role before u cross 26-28 years graduate trainee age threshold, good for u! If not, u go see shege. |

1) you must have a PC and you must practise jamb on it . like a daily workout routine. 2) social media is a SERIOUS problem in multiple ways. it is a distraction, but more importantly, it kills concentration. i can barely watch a five minute video to the end these days. so what will happen when i have to engage in rigorous reading? Social media is a very big distraction for this generation and that's why I really salute the students who are blasting exams and making good grades in university at this age. It's not easy. When parents buy big phones and androids which are handed to the kids without much supervision I wonder what they think they will do with them. I randomly see 13,14, 15 year Olds discussing about tik tok trends, dance challenge and all. You see them shooting videos in front of people's gates to be uploaded on their socials. raumdeuter: I believe children especially under 18 are too young to be making life decisions on courses to study when they dont even know much about the market, Someone who has an idea of the market need has to guide them. What you do between age 17 to 22yrs will form the bedrock of what you will eat for the rest of your life, So its better to make sound decisions which you are not able to see at that age. The harder you challenge yourself at that age, the softer life becomes for you later in life
Its not necessary forcing, its guiding but you tell them no one will use my money to study Dance in school and for ibime not Mass comm
While teaching Medicine is not the worst option and actually better than many careers but there are other ways to make loads of money first. All those sentimental things like giving back can be done effectively when you have money. Teaching Medicine in the US can earn say $160K a year while other specialties are earning $500k to $700k. Lolz 😂 You said it's not about forcing them, then in the same breath u said one should tell them "no child of mine will use my money to dance ". I don't think a parent should approach things like that from that angle. First u should know if he or she is comfortable with certain subjects, then discuss the courses/career path that are economically viable which are available for students who excel in those subject. Make them feel comfortable taking the decision of opting for ghat economically viable career path because u have explained to them what that particular path entails and that they actually have what it takes to survive on that path. I know passion doesn't pay bills, but u can be a good parent to source for career path that can help them combine passion with making money. Like the girl who has done well to make it to medical school ; allowing the girl to go ahead with her teaching passion is not in any way a bad idea at all. It's not like she won't get paid for her passion teaching medicine to others while being fulfilled. Money is not everything but if u are getting money and living Ur passion ; why not? |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 1:50am On May 13, 2025 |
raumdeuter: Some passions don't pay bills, I am never in the school of follow passion. Passion is what you can do and enjoy even if you don't get paid. For me its probably watching football. So who will pay me for watching football? Follow what gives you money. Use the money made to follow passion
I saw a young girl who just finished Bachelors about to enter Medical school and asked what specialization she would like and she said academics, I said tufiakwa, She said but uncle I like to give back. I told her its better to give money back. When you graduate give your alumni money back every year, they will appreciate it more
Personally I find it hard keeping concentration for a long time, this internet age when distractions even plenty, It will be almost impossible And medicine will test your endurance more than anything That's why I said with the parents' guidance ; the ward should be allowed to express himself. A parent should be able to discuss career path choice with a child by listening to what and what subjects he or she believes are his or her strong point and then discuss commercial viability of those courses and application in real life. I'm not saying a parent should just allow a child who says he wants to study Theatre arts to go ahead with it simply because the child believes he or she can act. Instead, try to discuss the commercial viability of the course, what can that child do if acting career doesn't work out, etc before taking the decision. The child should be made to understand the implication of the decision he or she is taking economic wise. I don't believe in imposing a career path on a child, instead I believe in helping the child take the right decision based on the child's ability, future job/career prospect, etc. I also don't think there's anything wrong in someone with a degree in medicine teaching. It's not like teaching stops her from practicing now. When my old man was sick, one of the specialists we were seeing is a professor of medicine. |

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/sep/26/surgeons-suicide-doctors-physicians-mental-health Na people wey their parents force to do course like Medicine and surgery to make the family proud dey always fall victim of this thing. Some of these kids most likely know they can't can't cope with the rigors of the course, spend hours reading and some even have problem learning fast like their peers ; but the fear of letting their family down will have them pushing till their mental health deteriorate. Some of them their passion is elsewhere but they have been boxed to a corner by the ambitions of their guardians who made their choice of career on their behalf. That's why it is important parents and guardians allow their kids have a say in their choice of career without necessary shoehorning them into a a career path you believe will be best for them without considering their opinion and ability. There are kids who are quite brilliant but can't read beyond 1 to 2 hours without losing concentration.
