Certain business are stressful and the overhead is just too much.

It's a catch 22 for poultry, fishery and piggery. If you're not hands on they would rob you blind, on the other hand it's a very physical and time consuming endeavor. Your most important currency is time and those business will monopolize it without sure guarantee of return. You have to be mentally and physically built for it

There just has to be a way to mechanize farming on a micro scale but a country that can't generate 5000MW of power. How do you pull that off

I disagree with this. Mega shopping mall is actually making the owners big money in recent times.

The rate at which some of these malls spring up sends a signal that they are actually cashing out. You need to take a drive around on a saturday or sunday afternoon and see people coming in and out of those shopping malls with trolleys behind them. Go to their car parks and see their security guys having a tough time directing inflow and outflow of cars. When u get inside the malls, u will see queues at the payment point which may be 6 to 8 payment points.

While major shopping malls like Shoprite may be experiencing low patronage, the new ones like Jendol, Justrite, etc are seeing massive patronage . Even when u go their electronics section, u see people buying TVs, Airconditioners, Freezers, etc ; items which they would've gone to buy in Jossy Electronics store.

I think what matters is for the investor to pick the right location and do enough feasibility studies before investing huge cash in the business.

It's ironic that one of the best businesses in terms of ROI and safety a person can invest is one that is addictive, fuels a culture of instant gratification, causes financial ruin, and forbears mental health issues.

I'm talking about Gambling, and precisely setting up a Bet9ja outlet or Agent shop. Earning is commission-based but if established in a strategic location with good decor, aesthetics & multiple betting terminals and lots of patronage, cash out is guaranteed.

One of the best & biggest bet shops here is owned by a Doctor. We gisted briefly when we met a while back during school runs, and he revealed that his Bet9ja shop is the best investment he's made.

Gambling business is actually a good business investment from the investor point of view, they almost always end up in big profit while the gamblers who patronize the agents end up in ruins.

When I was in the university, one of my coursemates' dad is a "baba ijebu" principal agent. By all streets standard the man is a big man. As at that time he was using one big Nissan SUV like that and owns like 3 houses in this same Lagos. His kids live better than most kids whose parents are middle class/working class.

There's something about that baba ijebu, It just seeem as if artisans, transporters and low income earners have been bewitched to always play it daily whether they win or lose. I believe the same apply to all those bet9ja people too.

I don't think u are far from the truth at all. There was a time a news trended that his elder sister and her elder brother called him out over money issues. I think that alone suggested he didn't get much love from his family as much as someone like Lookman.

True sha, it's very likely these things would keep happening, and the thing is exam co-ordinators at the Ward or LGA level can't decide to do what's humane and push the exam to the next day, cause what's the guarantee that you'd push the exam and your boss won't attribute it to your desire to compromise the exams...with the level of smart phone penetration that def compromises the exams sef.

I think some of the problems these exam co-ordinators have to deal with are those that are beyond their power (foundational governance issues) cause on a norm things like this, na to move questions very early hours of exam day, but with the security situation, what's the guarantee that it isn't you walking right into the arms of hoodlums.

I just wonder what they come up with as solutionjs to situations like this when ythey're having strategy meetings ahead of these exams.

Isn't it obvious that they don't really discuss issues like this/carry out scenario analysis when they plan for this exams? I mean if they do, things won't get this bad.

I think they just have people who are civil servants used to routine jobs at the helms of affairs over there. Then they also have this Nigerian nonchalant attitude that expects the students to take whatever comes their way if they want to be seen as "serious".

This is not the first time this is happening and it won’t be the last time . This thing is a Nigerian problem and it has big ego of those exam bodies written all over it .

1. There was a particular year when there was NLC strike/riot during Obasanjo’s government . I can’t remember the exact year now cos I was much younger but I remember seeing students in the night pass our house late at night after writing their exams . The papers were delayed because most of the WAEC supervisors who carried the exam questions had to cover long distance from WAEC office to exam centers either by foot or look for brave bikemen to take them . There was no movement due to the strike and WAEC refused to cancel/reschedule the paper in Nigeria alone .


2. I learnt the reason for this yesterday’s issue was because the particular paper leaked and WAEC had to outsmart the students by setting a fresh set of questions which led to serious logistics issue .

Well, I experienced something similar in the university when an exam question leaked and the school had to call for the computer science department to bin the initial questions and set a fresh one . We stayed hours in the exam hall and even got tired before the fresh questions arrived . We also had to leave the school late that day .

Personally , I feel in the two scenarios and even this recent WAEC issue, the paper should just have been rescheduled for another date . Our examination bodies/authorities should learn to do away with their pride and make it a duty to take responsibility for their mess up. They shouldn’t always punish the students for their mess up but instead reschedule the exams . The students can’t leak exams without complicity of people working with the office where the exam was set .

I will never forget that day's experience. Imagine watching TV without expecting much from the president's inaugural speech and u suddenly hear "Subsidy is gone" !

I dropped everything I was doing, took the car to go look for fuel because of the impending fuel scarcity that will follow the speech and I found out a lot of people were already out before me sef. Most filling stations already had queues while the ones still selling started closing their gates to hoard the old stock they have in order to sell at the new price.

Imagine government wey don give person that kind headache from its first day in office.

Today is 29th May, it's exactly 2 years since Tinubu said "Subsidy is gone" and things have never remained the same again.

There’s a particular politician who represented Somolu constituency at the Lagos state house of assembly for 4 terms i. e 16 years as a member of Lagos state house of assembly . His name is Rotimi Olowo.

He decided to step up to Federal House of assembly in 2023 so he collected APC nomination form for Federal house of reps for 2023 elections..

Due to the electoral act 2022 that forbids a candidate from holding two nomination forms at the same time , he couldn’t get the Lagos state house of assembly nomination form as insurance in case his federal house of assembly fails. ( This same law affected Akpabio and Ahmad Lawan but they bent the law and worked their way back to senate after contesting APC presidential Primary )

Unfortunately for him, he lost the APC primary for the federal house of assembly post and he can’t go back for the state house of assembly own. That was how he lost out and wasn’t on ballot at all during the 2023 general elections .

This man stayed just 2 years out of office and guess what ? He contested the recently concluded APC primaries for Somolu Local Government. I mean someone who was a state house of assembly member is contesting to be a local government chairman within 2 years of not chopping politics money. This is to buttress ur point that once they taste public funds , there’s no going back. They will do everything possible to find their way back to the cookie jar .

Yes footballers are wasteful and they tend to spend the money the way it comes. I think the suddeness around how some of these sportsmen get to be to luxurious life suddenly despite not growing up in money may be responsible for such erratic behaviour. Some of them just see money and and they begin to think about the thousand and one things they can do with all that money.

Raumdeuter is right when he said sportsmen go broke easily because they have a short career window to make money which they are expected to spend for the rest of their lives. i,e make money within 15 year career and u are expected to spend the money for at least 20 or more years of your life.(This is assuming u start playing professional 18, u play for 15 years and retire 33 years after which u may live for another 27 years to clock 60)

In pension management , there is what they call Longevity Risk i.e. the risk that an individual will outlive his income. This risk almost always crystalize for sportsmen because their own retirement age comes earlier than every other profession and the person is expected to live on his accumulated income till death comes calling which may not happen for some people until 30 to 40 years after retirement .

I think I get the reason behind this retraction notice.

Something tells me Sahara reporters in their article alleged the Uwadia person and the named company were complicit in the arms scandal but after several years there was no court pronouncement that confirms their culpability. The article was posted here and has since been cached on the internet.

I believe Sahara reporters had retracted the article but somehow a google search on the allegation always leads to Nairaland ; so they had to give our oga the option of either removing the article off nairaland or face a defamation suit since there's no how nairaland can prove the the content of the article is wrong.

I just hope our oga and nairaland get legal adviser because sooner or later , issues of this nature may lead to serious lawsuit in the future. Especially if it is involving foreign entities who have culture of suing first instead of asking for retraction.

The whole “it’s not for civil servant “ thingy is not that deep if u ask me. Someone selling exotic cars has his target audience and for sure his target audience are not civil servants if we are being truthful .

I don’t think any civil servant should feel down because of the guy’s adverts, except he or she has low self-esteem .

I mean why will I be pissed that someone is selling something I can’t afford ? 🤷‍♂️. Even people who earn way better than civil servants can’t afford most of the cars that Abuja guy sells ; so what’s the fuss ? I’m sure his target audience who are people with old money , politicians , flamboyant businessmen , etc see his adverts and buy from him

It is different for athletes. Firstly, they have a shorter career lifespan making money especially for players like Emmanuel Thomas that didn't really make it big. Secondly, the part of the human brain responsible for decision making, planning, impulse control does not fully develop until about 25yrs of age, by which time half of the already short career of an average sportsman is gone.

Conversely, for professionals like doctors and lawyers most of their money is made when they are fully mature and their brain is developed. They can also make their money for decades and can possibly continue to increase their earnings as they get older. Currently I have 3 colleagues who started practicing before i was born and they are still making loads of money despite swimming in it already.

The chances a sportsman will pay for earlier financial or fiscal mistakes are far higher than those of a lawyer or doctor.
