Iamoyindamola, I think The Penguin is overrated. I've been seeing people referring to it as 9.5/10, 10/10, etc....but after watching it I think those people are overrating it.

It's a good watch obviously, but it's not as solid as they are making it seem.

I enjoyed the first 5 episodes of The day of the jackal; in fact I enjoyed it more than the Penguin sef. When will the remaining episodes be realeased abeg?

Please share me any other series link wey make sense wey u fit recommend.

I dunno how common this knowledge is sha, maybe within the corporate/big business circles it's common knowledge, but for your average Joe customer, that might not be the case.
Anybody that reads news will hear how well they are doing financially. Nairametrics literally talk about these banks almost every quarter.

Even when the recapitalization was announced earlier this year, there was an article analyzing how banks need to raise before meeting the new capital base. These banks are in good standing compared to others

i agree. but the situation can lead to misconception and manipulation . if someone were to start a rumour that gtb was insolvent - it could prompt a run on the bank leading to artificially induced insolvency. since everything is ultimately about confidence
They have their corporate communication team to deal with those kind of rumors; moreover it is common knowledge the level of GTB's financial stability. I don't think people will really be worried to the extent of dumping the bank.

Before GT's recent issues, did you consider them one of those banks that can't fail?

And which other banks would you put in the category you've placed Zenith?
What is happening to GTB has nothing to do with their financial position. When I say "FAIL", I'm talking about their financial stability and not service disruption which is happening to GTB. Banks like Access, Zenith, GTB, UBA are actually doing well. They are not in the level of Heritage bank that failed recently, that's the point. Before those banks fail, u would've seen the handwriting on the wall

all these corporate org are in bed with news publishers. it is only activist bloggers who can expose bank issues and after the way segun agbaje is dealing with those bloggers [rightly or wrongly] everyone go align
He is actually right about Zenith bank being in very very good standing. At the risk of sounding too overconfident, I can say Zenith is one of the biggest bank that can never fail except they run into problem politically.

What happened to Oceanic back then is not what can happen to a publicly traded bank this 2024 .

MultiChoice writes off $21m deposited in defunct Heritage Bank

MultiChoice Group Limited has written off $21m deposited in Nigeria’s Heritage Bank following the financial institution’s liquidation earlier this year.

This disclosure was contained in the company’s interim financial statements for the half-year ending September 30, 2024.

The sum was classified as irrecoverable after the Central Bank of Nigeria revoked Heritage Bank’s operating licence, effectively shutting down the institution.

The financial statement document read, “Following the revocation of Heritage Bank’s banking licence by the Central Bank of Nigeria on 3 June 2024 and its subsequent liquidation, the group wrote-off its receivable relating to the cash held with the bank.”

MultiChoice’s decision to write off the funds underlines the difficulties faced by businesses navigating Nigeria’s financial sector, particularly amidst an unstable economic climate.

Nigeria remains a challenging terrain for MultiChoice, with the group grappling with soaring inflation, and a continuously depreciating naira.

The company also reported lower cash remittances from Nigeria, extracting only $65m during the period under review, compared to $91m in the same period last year.

Multichoice Group, owners of DSTV, had earlier said that it had an account balance of N31.6bn with Heritage Bank, before the bank’s liquidation.

The PUNCH recently reported that the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation announced plans to sell off properties and assets belonging to the defunct Heritage Bank in a bid to recover funds for uninsured depositors.

This move, which the NDIC describes as crucial, is part of its statutory mandate as the liquidator of failed banks under Section 62(1)(d) of the NDIC Act, 2023.

The exercise, scheduled to begin on December 4, 2024 will involve competitive bidding for the bank’s landed properties and chattels located at 36 sites nationwide.
Source : Punch Newspapers.

Imagine losing about 35 billion naira ( $21m @ 1,700/1$) simply because you are unfortunate to have the funds of Ur organization deposited in bank that failed 😩😩😩

So many staff profit sharing and profitability bonus Don follow the money go 🤦‍♂️. Shareholders possible dividend washed down the drain....,

Omo, CBN and NDIC have questions to answer as to how they allowed heritage bank to fail under their watch o.

I'm sure a company smaller than multichoice that has most of its account domiciled with Heritage bank would just die with heritage bank if they face same situation.

1) Vast natural resources that in the early 1900s were just starting to be properly utilised. No European country apart from the USSR could compete in terms of agricultural potential, energy resources, manpower.

2) Vast landmass of arable land with a relatively smaller population, allowing for the population explosion and economic growth that took place in the 20th century. UK, France, and other European countries, on the other hand had limited room for such growth.

3) The 2nd world war destroying much of the infrastructure of the European countries and also the subsequent loss of their colonies. This stripped them not only of potential source of raw materials to drive their industries but also of readily available market to consume their products.

4) Capitalism and relative meritocracy in the US fuelled the American dream in each individual’s hearts. Many other countries lost some of their hardest workers and smartest innovators to the US.

The summary is that based on its natural advantages and also the type of society it had, the US was always going to rise to the top, the world wars just accelerated the process.
Omo! The way America attracts all the bright minds from different parts of the world is crazzy. You just randomly lookup that the name of the most brilliant science student in Ur secondary that year and u see he's already a cancer researcher in the US. You look up that commercial class chap in secondary school today and u see he's leading some startup fintech with reasonable American dollars as seed capital.

That capitalism and relative meritocracy u mentioned is very key.

But from where I'm standing it appears America's liberalism and freedom will be their undoing in the future.

America did not suffer during the war. Outside of pearl harbor. Literally everyone else did.

Germany bombed the shit out of the UK
The UK bombed the hell out of Germany
Japan destroyed most of asia

So at the end of the war most countries were in ruins and had to start from scratch to rebuild

The us had its infrastructure intact
So the US basically had a head start on everyone else.

I also feel Americans are like spooit children because they have never actually suffered in a war so they take the impact of war for granted and have delusions of their toughness.

We all saw how Americans could not be disciplined enough to wear masks. During ww2 there was rationing in Britain. You could not put on your lights at night. I cannot imagine modern day Americans agreeing to these inconveniences seeing how they shat the bed during covid.

As it is I can see the beginning of a decline if Trump gets his way and fills the government with sycophants rather than professionals. That imho is part of what has fked Russias military. It also fked Germany during ww2. When competence is cast away for fawning loyalty and everything is about the favor of the emperor rather than the country. But let's see.
Taguchi:
I also think geographical advantage played a huge part in the emergence of the US as sole superpower
While powers in Europe were busing killing themselves and destroying Thier infrastructure, industries and cities grin the US was experiencing economic boom and was busy manufacturing weapons and supplies for them and by the end of war has positioned itself as the largest and the most stable economic powerhouse.

The stars aligned to ensure America's emergence as a superpower, but its sustained dominance is rooted in its economic strength, encapsulated in one word: petrodollar. While nuclear weapons serve as a military equalizer among rivals, it is the U.S. dollar's hegemony that still solidifies its unrivalled supremacy.

As long as the dollar remains the backbone of the global financial system, the U.S. will retain its dominant position and influence over other nations and institutions.

The day this hegemony is seriously challenged and dismantled will be the day the United States loses its global influence. Believe me, America would rather see the world go up in flames than allow that to happen.

So in other words BRICS and their new currency, dey play.
I think the Americans need to be commended for making it a habit of Ensuring majority of the wars they've participated in since the end of the second world War has been far away from their soil.

They appear to be the biggest learners from the world War. They've seen from afar what war on one's soil can do and always shift the battleground elsewhere.

This your question na like 4yrs course or at least a Thesis for an International relations degree student but I will make an attempt

1. Unlike Europe and Asia, which faced devastation, American infrastructure remained intact, giving it a significant post-war advantage. So by the war's end, the U.S. accounted for a significant amount of the world's manufacturing output. So America in exchange for military protection n form of UN, NATO, etc gave them military protection in exchange for economic support, America will export their goods to you, do trade to you, in exchange for military protection and natural resources

2. Americas location as practically an Island gave it a natural advantage against wars. You will literally have to take your war machinery across thousands of miles to be able to invade US

3. All these gave America a significant financial advantage that it used to build more power and influence with countries who needed money and financial support. This spread the influence of America all over. We started speaking like them, we started dressing like them, listening to their music.

4. This prosperity in America compared to other destroyed countries enticed the best brains from those countries, who were the best of the best and they all contributed to Americas further industrial and technological dominance. Mixed people of different heritage who are able to bring their best in every walk of life and contribute to making America great. Post war destruction of other countries forced their best brains to America, All the Nazi scientists found their way to America.

5. CAPITALISM. I would like to put this in bold all through as it ties into the last point. The ideology of capitalism understands human innate nature that we are GREEDY beings and capitalism rewards greed, The greedier you are the more you succeed and America encourages you to be greedy. Work as hard as you can, Make as much money as you can and live as obscenely as you wish and dreamed of. When you see the way Americans live, the best of your country will drop whatever they are doing and flee towards it. I believe you understand this point cos I can write 5 pages on how this has done wonders and crushed other would be superpowers. America is where you can come to and have no limits on what you can achieve.
Arnold Schwarzenegger likely would have been a bouncer in Austria, Bums like Deontay Wilder became billionaires while superior fighters in Cuba did wretched. Capitalism is understand human innate nature to be greedy

I met a man from Iran where we worked together and he told me America is the only country where they will hire a 60yr old man like him. Yesternight a Tyson at almost 60yrs just made 20m from a sham fight
You are right about Capitalism and how it has positioned America. Unfortunately capitalism comes with its attendant disadvantages one of which is not knowing where to draw the line as far as human greed is concerned.

I think that's America has been caught pants down on some issues where coubtries were turned upside down to further American interests. I think that's what fuel America(CIA) meddling in sovereign countries' internal affairs and going as far as effecting change in governments that don't serve American interests.

On the good side countries like South Korea who aligned with America have a good story to tell when their northern neighbors have had bitter stories to tell following the other lane.

I also never considered the impact location played in America having natural advantage against wars until u mentioned it now.

https://x.com/EYakoby/status/1857063234257264905?s=19[/quote]The US is just a case of when money talks, bullshiit keeps quite. They know they are responsible for funding most of the UN agancies ; the American dollars is the air those agencies breath in and they are using that position to their advantage.

When I saw that Arab resolutuon Amoto posted earlier, I just laughed. All those talks about UNGA going after Israel/Netanyahu na just paper talk. The funny thing is that even all those Arab/OIC countries holding meeting every eke market day posting on Palestine's statehood, they mostly don't put their money where their mouth is. Even US and the rest of the world dey show Palestine love pass those Arabs sef.

Egbon I have a question ; What do u think is responsible for America coming out of World War and becoming a modern day world power that is so big other nations can't challenge? Is it because the Theatre of the war was not set majorly in America and they were able to progress economically while other countries Like Russia, Germany, etc were busy rebuilding? Or what exactly?

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor E.A. Adeboye, has said that without divine intervention, the exchange rate could have skyrocketed to ₦10,000 for $1.

He noted that billions have been spent on refineries, many of which remain non-functional, resulting in a continued dependence on imported petrol.

Adeboye also addressed the controversy surrounding the government’s decision to eliminate costly fuel subsidies, a move that angered those who profited from the previous system and contributed to further economic challenges.

“We need help, and it’s not human help; it’s divine help,” he stated.

“Before our current president took office, we were aware that the root of our financial issues lay in the importation of petrol. Despite having oil, we continued to import petrol and waste billions on refineries that did not operate effectively.

“When the president cancelled the subsidy on petrol imports, those who benefited from it became upset and created more problems.”

As the naira continued to decline rapidly, Adeboye said that he prayed and was grateful that others joined him in prayer.

“If God hadn’t intervened, $1 could have been worth N10,000 by now. This illustrates how much we need prayers,”
he said.
Some of these things will not age well......And when the time comes, irrespective of the good they have done over the years; history will not be kind to some of these babas.

How can you claim it is those benefiting from subsidy imports that are upset when u have some of ur members barely able to feed due to the effect of the subsidy removal?

As a poor nation what's an hor doing with this plenty money
One thing I've noticed since I started using Twitter recently is that there are so many youth with on that app with bluetick readily available for hire to help politicians whitewash their image and get paid for it.

No matter how u catch a politician pants down, u have one or more intelligent youth who is ready to put his life on the line to help the politician get off the hook and get paid for it. It is a matter of our values and morals being in serous decay.

I saw the initial picture with wads of cash in front of the "honorable". Then one guy came and pasted a different picture without the cash there. People called the guy out that his own picture was photos hopped to disappear the cash and this was corroborated with original video.

This week somone posted videos of terrible roads in Ogun state that have not been repaired despite complaints by road users over and over again. One guy on Twitter called man of letters or whatever came online to start defend Dapo Abiodun and Yayi with some asinine points that doesn't even make any sense. The residents of the area ( Ayetoro-Itele-Lafenwa) came hard on him showing recent pictures of the road and lamenting how Dapo and Yayi have failed them. It was in the process I got to know that the guy used to call out Dapo's government before they gave him a gig and he started defending them.

Like this people will defend anything if the price is right provided they already have a platform. Some of these people's parents cussed Abacha and civilians that worked with him, but now they are doing exactly same. I mean how can u be making excuse for a government that don't fix roads?

These roads, Lagos state under Ambode fixed the Lagos portion of the roads while Amosun and now Dapo have failed to fix the Ogun state portion.
