Few weeks ago, I was on call , and I was called to the bedside of a diabetic man with diabetic ketoacidosis. (Google for it). I immediately placed him on intravenous fluids, and wrote out orders for his drug treatment. Now my aim in treating this patient was to rehydrate him and to control his blood sugar...which I did. We also investigated him for infectious disease. He recovered and was sent home with some advice on drug compliance ( the cause of his ketoacidiosis was that he stopped taking his anti-diabetic drugs several weeks earlier)

Now that is beyond just 'first aid.'' We not only got his blood sugar under control, we also got him preppped for life when he is discharged.

Now , that isn't just first aid!
(P.S--He is one of many cases of diabetic ketoacidiosis/hyperglycemic emergencies that I have seen over the last two years working in a busy private hospital in urban setting here in Nigeria).
