Health / Re: 226 New COVID-19 Cases, 90 Discharged And 1 Death On May 19 - (1332 Tested) by bodejohn(m): 2:56am On May 20, 2020 |
I see a lot of folks here still don't believe that this virus is real especially in Nigeria. These doubting Thomas need to understand that the prevalence of malaria in Nigeria is the reason why most people test positive for malaria and also for Covid 19. Has there been anytime someone took a malaria parasite test in Nigeria and no trace was found? To the best of my knowledge, samples of Covid 19 suspects are taken with swabs from their nostrils vs blood tests for malaria...only a handful of laboratories in Nigeria can test these samples. I seriously doubt there is any private lab in Nigeria that is currently testing Covid 19 testing, I stand to be corrected. I hear every time that some folks want to know someone who knows someone who has died or contracted the virus...to be modestly responsible, don't people come here on nairaland complaining of hunger everyday? Has anyone of you asked to see someone who knows someone who died of hunger? Stay responsible, be safe, stay safe and keep others safe! 4 Likes |

Politics / Re: Why Did Buhari Refuse To Lockdown The Country From Entry When He Was Told To Do by bodejohn(m): 9:16pm On May 01, 2020 |
This is where you guys get it all wrong. No government can lock the doors against the citizens of the country. Even if the borders were close since December 2019. The citizens of Nigeria would still have been allowed in. The part where I blame the government was in isolating the returning Nigerians as they landed. It is indeed laughable that the whole nation was not locked down because a few politicians were outside the country. Most of them would have rather stayed outside instead of returning to the chaotic health care systems that we have. |

atonement12: The US has been able to reduce the projected 100,000 deaths to 66,000 largely because the epi-center of the spread, NY state, was locked down for about a month now. I quite agree that the lockdown has been an abysmal failure in Nigeria because the time the government got was supposed to be used for massive testing, contact tracing, isolation and treatment of infected people. However, we cannot rush to open the locked down cities, especially places where multitudes gather. The story of the 31st case in South Korea will humble whoever thinks this virus is joking... |

Staphylococcus: You want to explain 5G and it's relationship to a virus to people who still believe that a phone charger can cause electrocution? Or explain to people that when their God of Men failed to provide miracles to heal the world from Corona virus they instead became scientists liking a pandemic to a new world order. I figured out during this lockdown that one doesn't really need to win any argument online or anywhere, until such time when arguments begin to affect a bank account balance. |

Politics / Re: Buhari Misfires In His COVID19 SPEECH by bodejohn(m): 11:52am On Mar 30, 2020 |
This paragragph is quite simple to read and understand. Students were enrolled in the school feeding program before the schools were shut down. The feeding programme was supposed to provide nutrition for the students and I think to also encourage them to attend schools. Since the schools are now closed, the president is asking the appropriate ministry to look into how the feeding programme can be sustained during the closure so the students can continue to enjoy the "balanced nutrition". It sounds like a good idea to me if it can be implemented without compromising the health and safety of the students, teachers and others involved. |

Firstnebo: I am not attacking the drug...I'm not in the position to do so, but if experts are saying its ability to treat the virus is anecdotal, I don't have any reason to doubt either. I am referring to statements made by Dr Fauci, the US director of allergy and infectious diseases and a top member of the presidential task force on covid 19. My point is prevention is better than cure and proper diagnosis before administering of any drug especially drugs that are not clinically proven to work. We should be emphasising preventive measures...social distancing, washing of hands, reducing the touching of eyes, mouth and nose etc. With these, we will be alive till scientists come up with clinically proven drugs safe for use. |
Health / Re: Coronavirus: It Appears This Chloroquine Is Really Working (tweets) by bodejohn(m): 7:34pm On Mar 29, 2020 |
Firstnebo: Chloroquine has not been proven to be effective, at least not scientifically. Also the key word is infected people, people are rushing to buy chloroquine without getting tested. People will still fall ill because of malaria and the flu. A fever and a cough is not a straight confirmation of the disease. This drug was banned in Nigeria a few years ago for a reason. Getting infected to this virus is not a death sentence, the index case in Nigeria got cured. About getting infected, I'm taking preventive measures seriously, even before most people took this outbreak seriously. I am also making sure that I am taking a balanced diet to sustain/improve my immune systems. Prevention is better than cure! |
Health / Re: Coronavirus: It Appears This Chloroquine Is Really Working (tweets) by bodejohn(m): 1:41pm On Mar 29, 2020 |
Firstnebo: If this guy was in the hospital on a ventilator, he would probably not know or remember what drug was administered to him. 8 out of every 10 covid 19 patients will not need to even go to the hospital. Those with slight symptoms will be treated at home with whatever drug that has been proven to handle fever. The race is to find a cure to save people that are most vulnerable, this cure according to scientists as at now is not chloroquine. 1 Like |

When Trump moved the idea of this drug, US had less than 500 deaths from the virus, now it's above 2000 deaths, if they had the cure why are they still dying? For those who don't know and are too lazy to read or learn, 80% of people confirmed to be infected with the virus will see none to mild symptoms. Most will not even notice they were infected. Of the remaining 20% only a little percentage will require hospitalization. Those who are risk are the elderly, people with pre existing conditions and others with compromised immune systems. Most drugs used to manage fever could be used to manage people with mild symptoms. Most of the drugs suggested in here are at best anecdotal, with no scientific proof that it works. The watch out however is that, infected people showing little or no symptoms can easily infect others that are significantly at risk. Don't be a number in the statistics, stay away from crowded areas, most Nigerians do not know the state of their health, not to talk of if they have compromised immune systems. 2 Likes |
Politics / Re: Covid-19: Osinbajo In Self Isolation by bodejohn(m): 8:47pm On Mar 24, 2020 |
Caleb17: A mistake Nigerians should not make at this point in time is to rejoice or be happy that most of the people you have been confirmed as Covid 19 positive in Nigeria are political leaders or people around the corridors of power. It might seem to be the natural thing to do or say but we have to look at the big picture, these people interact with a large number of people on a daily basis, from close aides and family members to hangers on including beggers, thugs and touts....and that is potentially dangerous. |

Citytrend: I cannot understand your point... The escalation of the spread of the virus in the US is a combination of the fed's overconfidence. Some leaders in govt said it was under control few days ago, but they just saw a 100 deaths in 24hrs. Is this not sounding like the music we heard from the Nigerian govt a couple of days ago? San Francisco advised residents to stay at home but they headed of to the beach calling it spring break...guess what - students in San Francisco are now testing positive...Is that any different from Nigerians going to religious gatherings, political rallies and parties last weekend? |

@OP It's unfortunate that at a time like this we are still as complacent as always...we are not alone in this folly as people in other parts of the world or where we prefer to call "saner climes" are doing same. How do you explain that we went from calling this outbreak an "audio virus" a few weeks ago and an attempt by government to embezzle public funds to now that we think the blood of Jesus will magically set us apart from the outbreak after falling to heed medical advice. If Italy, home of the Vatican, the base of more than one billion Catholics can be this devastated by the virus with a record of almost 800 deaths in a 24hr period, I hope we will wake up soon from this folly. If people were called to defend their world or country by going to war and they gladly obeyed, how much more we that have been told to just stay at home or practice social distancing to stay alive. Stay safe folks, follow sound medical advice! 10 Likes |
