Attend the African Drum Festival at the magnificent Amphitheater, City Center, Abeokuta, Ogun State

Date: 25th - 27th April 2019

The significance of Drums to Africans cannot be overemphasized because a typical traditional gathering is not complete without it so that the beats and rhythm can keep the audience lively and in tune with the main course of the gatherings.

Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, will come alive from Thursday, April 19 through Saturday, April 21, as drummers from 20 African countries and many states of the federation will participate in the third edition of the African Drum Festival 2018. The festival, introduced by Governor Ibikunle Amosun-led administration in 2016, is aimed at showcasing Africa's drum culture. Last year's edition attracted 14 African countries.

The theme of the festival is 'Drumming to Advancement,' with sub-theme, 'Drumming for Socio-Economic Development.'

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, is one of the prominent personalities who will feature in this year's festival. Also, a 91-year old drummer and a teenage drummer are among those who have confirmed their participation.

Soyinka, who spoke through his representative, Mr. Jahman Anikulapo, at the ceremony where the festival logo was unveiled, stated, "Drum is not only for entertainment, it's also used for cultural and socio-economic promotion. Drums and drumming are important features of the African culture that cuts across all strata of the continent. "There is nowhere that you don't have one type of drum or the other on the African continent and if we are to revive our ideals and ideas as a continent, we must start with a culture that cuts across, which is drumming."

Before he unveiled the festival logo, Amosun assured that his government had fixed the third week of April of every year to hold the festival. According to him, this year's festival would be spiced with a workshop and an exhibition.

In his words: "The festival will not just be centralised; we will be going to other Senatorial Districts and other states. This time around, we will spice it up with workshop and exhibition. We will also be having giants who are lovers of culture at the festival; we should not have anything less. We are Africans and the African Drums Festival is to showcase the beauty of our cultures. It will also reawaken the consciousness in our people that Africa is great.

"In 2017 there were about 14 African countries that came. This time around, many more are coming; we will be looking at about 36 states that will participate and more than 20 African nations will be joining us. We are happy this is happening in our own state.

"I saw a little girl recently playing the talking drum; she knew how to play it very well using her left hand and I have ordered that she should be allowed to perform at the festival."

Apart from the 20 African countries that have confirmed their participation, Amosun said Jamaica, Cuba, and other non-Africa countries have indicated interest to participate.

The festival, unlike previous editions, will be marked with a lot of activities among which are a conference, a workshop and an exhibition at the historic Olumo Rock, Abeokuta. Soyinka said measures had been taken to add intellectual flavour to the character of the festival.

"The main objective is to begin to position the festival as a tool for education, socialisation, cultural and economic advancement," he said through his spokesperson.

Among the resource persons for the conference and workshop are Sylvanus Kwashie Kuwor, a master drummer, music and dance practitioner and lecturer at University of Ghana, Legon, Accra, Lolu Akins Akintobi, Nigerian musician, author, composer, and consultant of international repute and Tunde Adebola, a research scientist, consulting engineer and culture activist.

The planned workshop is aimed at impacting knowledge on the various techniques of drumming, especially on the young ones.

PoliticsNational Legislators Want To Hijack N500bn For FG's Social Investment Programme. by boriswole(op): 12:09pm On Feb 22, 2017
Some members of the National Assembly have set their sights on a fat new pie: President Muhammadu Buhari’s N500B Social Investment Programs (SIP).

Officials of the Budget and Planning Ministry, which is responsible for disbursing the fund, say the Senators and Representatives have tabled a list of their demands regarding how they can share of the money.

The sources say the legislators are demanding that unless they are allowed to select the beneficiaries of the SIP as well as award and take contracts under the scheme, they would simply terminate the program, which is designed to benefit ordinary Nigerians including the most vulnerable and the poorest, as well as unemployed youths.

One Senator from Bayelsa state has threatened to “kill the entire program,” if Senators are not allowed to choose beneficiaries of the N-Power jobs for unemployed graduates, while a Representative from Kano State, who is also on the house committee on Poverty Alleviation specifically demanded contract benefits.
According to a Kano State government source, it took the intervention of the governor of that state to call the Representative to order.

Similarly, some Senators have demanded of the Presidency that Senators be allowed to nominate 50 beneficiaries each for N-Power. That is in opposition to a selection system that would guarantee equal opportunity for all Nigerian youth by means of an online application process. That system has already allowed in 200,000 Nigerian previously unemployed graduates who got in without needing to press any buttons whatsoever.

The Presidency has explained that the beneficiaries of all the SIPs are being produced through that fair online application process, which is also easily audited and cross-checked.

In several instances, some of the National Assembly and other partisan political operatives have been reported to be selling illegal application forms to unsuspecting Nigerians and charging illegal fees in the process.

Said a government official, “They simply don't understand that President Buhari would not tolerate any form of diversion of the resources. Many of them still think it is business as usual. Why are National Assembly members so desperate and when did it become a duty of the legislator to implement or execute policies?”

An informed source explained that if the Buhari administration ever succumbs to the demand of legislators to choose beneficiaries, not only would they produce bogus lists, they would also exploit them by taking significant percentages of their stipends and other monetary proceeds.

While it is true that the SIP budgetary allocations in the 2016 budget is the largest of its kind in the country, similar efforts of its kind are known to have been compromised in the past by political opportunists who see such programs as opportunities to enrich themselves rather than to deliver services to the targeted demographics.

It would be recalled that already all the SIPs of the current government have taken off. They include the employment of 200,000 graduates; the National Homegrown School Feeding program, in seven states; and the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT), which is being paid to beneficiaries in nine states and is aimed at one million Nigerians in its first budget cycle.

There is also the Government Economic and Enterprise Program, (GEEP), which giving interest-free soft loans to Nigerians in over 13 states of the federation in sums ranging from N10,000 to N100,000 each. GEEP is meant to benefit about 1.6m Nigerian traders, and artisans, as well as market men and women.

PropertiesThe Rich Also Cry! The 1004 Housing Estate Experience by boriswole(op): 4:32pm On Feb 16, 2017
The crisis rocking upscale residential estate, the 1004 Estates, Victoria Island, Lagos, has taken a new dimension with the sack Maintenance Committee led by Mr. Tayo Soetan. The committee had the responsibility of maintaining facilities on the estate.

At a meeting held at the 1004 Estates Cluster Club House, residents said the sack of the Maintenance Committee, also know as House Owners and Residents Association (HORA), was inevitable because it failed to deliver value.

In Jan 2016, Mr. Soetan led a team of armed security operatives to take over the electricity and water supply operation in the Estate. Soetan also claimed the association won suit No LD/3744/2014 filed by 1004 Estates Limited against The Incorporated Trustees of 1004 HORA at the Lagos High Court. He said the ruling delivered by Justice Dawodu on December 2, last year recognised the association as duly constituted and ordered 1004 Estates Limited to render accounts of money collected to the association.

Based on the ruling, he said the association was at liberty to appoint a facility firm for the estate and determine its fate. But a certified copy of the ruling obtained by our correspondent showed that the association was indeed recognised by the court based on the relief sought by 1004 Estates Limited as to whether it was the same association it envisaged in the sub-lease contractual agreement it signed with residents.

The court went ahead to also rule that since the firm had been relating with the association, it would not be out of place to render accounts of its stewardship, especially on service charges collected from residents.

The ruling went ahead to affirm that 1004 Estate Limited is vested with the “management and administration of the Estate”. It then said: “The defendant (HORA) is at liberty to give suggestions and advice on management of the estate and there should be corresponding understanding between the residents and management of the estate.”

Mr. Tayo Soetan claimed that the N 450,000 annual service charge proposed by Samuel Ukpong led 1004 Estates Limited was exorbitant. He also claimed that energy tariff of N 70/KWH was also a rip off. Our investigations revealed that after Mr. Soetan assumed management of the Estate, he increased the service charge to N 581,000 annually and also arbitrarily increased energy tariff to N 100/kWH without providing adequate accounts to HORA members who he claimed to be representing.

Another major reason given for the sack of the committee, headed by Mr. Tayo Soetan, is the squalid state of infrastructure on the estate. Mr. Soetan was sacked along with other members of the committee that included Mr. Ochuko Akposibure, the Vice Chairman; Mrs. Sade Babatunde, Mr. Ehiosu Oviawe and Mrs. Femi Romiluyi. Underneath this was a variety of allegations of misconduct and incompetence, including lack of transparency and accountability, arbitrariness in the increase in power tariff, failure to guarantee adequate water supply and non- provision of befitting children's playground.

At the meeting, the disenchanted residents who claimed their property values have been eroded also sacked IG4 Power Limited, an electricity firm that supplied power to the 1004 Estates. They claimed the company's tariff of N100 per kilowatt was too high. The company, they also alleged, is owned by one Mr. Owumi Ikomi, a tenant on the estate.

The meeting, co-chaired by Mr. Soetan, also resolved to dissolve the 1004 Estates Board Of Trust (BOT) headed by Chief Dele Ogedengbe. It directed members of the Board to immediately vacate office. The residents replaced the sacked Management Committee with an eight-member caretaker committee, which will be in office for 60 days pending the constitution of a new Management Committee.

A January 2016 Lagos High Court order returned the management of the Estate to 1004 Estates Limited. But the order was disobeyed by the ousted Management Committee, with one of the outcomes being the poor supply of electricity to the estate by IG4 Power Limited.

An overwhelming majority of the residents at the meeting insisted the estate was better managed under 1004 Estate Limited before the takeover by the sacked Management Committee.

Abeg, Nigeria is so difficult to lead, All the major faiths teach that we should be considerate of our neighbors particularly the sick.

Our culture also teaches consideration to people in their time of weakness.

We pray and wish Mr President well even as he recuperates. This is a time for calm.

Just as we've had that sick colleague or family member of ours gone or down for a few weeks and we've had them in our thoughts, so have we chosen to have Mr. President in our thoughts.

This is even so as there's no vacuum created by his recuperative trip. since he has handed over to the Acting President, Professor Osinbajo. Let's get back to being humane and kind.
PoliticsBuhari Ill, Will Not Return Today, Wish Him Well. by boriswole(op): 5:45pm On Feb 05, 2017
The President is ill but is recovering, Nigerians should please continue to pray for our president, and not spread death rumours

Exclusive reports reaching NigerianEye has it that President Muhammadu Buhari who is expected back in Nigeria on Sunday after his 10-day vacation in London will not return as scheduled.

A competent source in the presidency confirmed to NigerianEye on Sunday that the president received medical advice to remain in London while the results of some tests are being awaited

“Mr president is doing fine, and was ready to return to the country on Sunday as planned, but he was advised to run a few more medical tests which will mean, he will not be back on Sunday again” the source said.

The source continued 'As soon as the test results are out, Mr president will be back in Nigeria, Nigerians should please continue to pray for our president, and not spread death rumours, he is doing very fine, and he will be back soon'

What this means is that his doctors are still observing him and have not given him the go ahead to return.

Buhari had penultimate Thursday departed Nigeria for London for a 10-day vacation and was expected to resume work on Monday, February 6.

He had informed the lawmakers that Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo would be performing the duties of the President in acting capacity while he would be away.

This is the third time Buhari would embark on vacation in one year.

He had earlier embarked on a six-day vacation between February 5 and 10, 2016 in London.

He had also embarked on another 10-day vacation on June 6, 2016 to treat an ear infection.

It is possible that early Africans developed technology that would have been useful today for transportation or flight or energy, they would have retained the knowledge to themselves and used it to frighten their people.
