But money, the real money, should come from the private sector.
We blame government too much in these parts yet we all do our best to dodge taxes. Speak for yourself. I pay my taxes. The problem is that the taxes are stolen rather than used for public amenities. |

If you must advert a post, make sure its the truth and credible, you social media cretins. This is not about the individual posts but the social media companies as well. They should not be liable for what others post. Imagine 30 million people on Twitter, can you be responsible for what each of them posts? The irony is that with this order, it would make twitter responsible for Trump's posts, which would even make Twitter more likely to censor his tweets. |

Many Nigerians do not know what racism is. When you are living abroad in a white western country, you have to be sharp and careful.
So far, the lucky thing is that many Nigerians have learnt from their own police that a man with a badge or a gun is someone to avoid.
I want this racist cop to be given the full sentence when found guilty. At least it will strike some fear into some useless police officers in the usa |

mekaprime2: There's hope. Ask me how? Alright, just like ingeniousLeez said, most of our movies are purchased by or are streaming on Netflix. I count 12 of em' Lionheart The bling lagosians Moms at war King of boys Up north Merry men New money Mokalik Tatu 93 days The wedding party 2 Living in bondage: breaking free.
If the contents of these Flicks were that bad, do you think Netflix would have purchased em'.
Ok here's the deal, Netflix purchasing these movies gives a sort of promotional advantage to the producers of the above flicks. If Genevieve Nnaji comes up tomorrow with a movie idea, do you think it'll be difficult for her to find investors or fund?
Our contents have improved presently, that's why Netflix saw it as financially rewarding purchasing our movies. And as long as our content keeps improving, Netflix would always be willing to buy or showcase our content on their platform, thus, more producers are added unto the list, and as such, investors would see the industry as viable & will be willing to invest in the already made producers, this would in turn trigger upcoming producers to work their ass off so as to be on the list, invariably, the growth of the industry becomes exponential.
So therefore, there's hope. Netflix is just applying local products to local markets. Business 101. Netflix india has Bollywood movies. Netflix Japan has more anime |

we all need to appreciate those guy's cause it ain't easy, though constructive criticism is always a good thing. With the way the industry is headed presently, there is hope & Gods grace we'd get there eventually, the journey of a thousand miles starts with a step. There is no hope. Nollywood is not trying abeg. Even with a hostile environment, one can still do great things. When I was young, i remember the quality of the plot and script of Things Fall Apart. Granted, it had a source material from the book but then.. Or just look at indie movies in America. With little budgets, they create cheap movies that mostly focus on the dramatic plot. Where are the Nigerian short movies on youtube? If we can copy short comedy videos (cough* brother shaggy) why can't we also do short movies in youtube that wont even cost much? The only thing Nollywood has is good actors. I am yet to see a good plot in Nigerian films. Even our romantic films lack good storylines. It is either predictable or copied from a Hollywood film. I know part of the problem is from.the Nigerin government and nigerian environment but still... |

DrDax: It's easy to dismiss Nollywood for their lack of creativity or imagination.
As someone who has been there and done that, please clap for those guys.
Nollywood is not a place, neither is it a gentlemen's club.
It's an aggregate of Nigerians trying to make a living from the movies using their meager personal resources.
Kindly cut them some slack if they are yet to produce an INCEPTION-like kinda flick.
"the spirit is willing, it is the flesh that is weak"
I have seen badass scripts in my time, but the fear of failure would not let many a director/producer to take the leap.
Many have come to ruins because of one bad picture that could not sell "10,000 copies".
Respect those entrepreneurs, please.
How many of you would invest in a good movie? Put your money where your mouth is
The banks would not fund it. The government looks the other way.
Venture Capital is a no go area because "no businessman wants to risk their money on a movie whose return is based solely on audience acceptance"
So where do you want these producers to go to for funding?
Is it DSTV that buys movies off producers at an average of N1.5m.
What quality production costs less than that? How would the producer make a profit?
Or Iroko TV? Dem even dey try small.
This environment is just a joke! It's enough to suck all the creativity out of Quentin Tarantino!!!
Let's leave armchair philosophy abeg.
Oro po ni nu iwe kobo (youruba proverb)
Nollywood, I hail!!!
mjbolt hahn mekaprime2 born2freak We are on the same page. My original comment was saying that the government should invest in Nollywood by investing in the arts. How many film schools do we have? Even the loans you mention- there are government grants and loans for manufacturing companies but none for movie companies. If we invest in video technology, arts and film schools, tax breaks for movie productions etc, Nollywood would be great |
TV/Movies › Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by Born2Freak(f): 3:59pm On May 29, 2020 |
mekaprime2: Don't you think mentioning movies like inception, transcendence & in time is kinda way too much. Poking into the SciFi Genre is a no no for me, cause taking lots of factors into consideration, we may never get there.
Every industry has what they are good at. Hollywood is an all rounder, Bollywood excells best with Romance, Comedy, Rom-Com & Drama, and the industry has been churning out movies with exquisite contents from these genres. Nollywood, is mostly good/ ok/ trying when it comes to Comedy, Romance & Rom-Com & Sometimes Drama. Have you see a movie with John Okafor, Charles inoje, or Charles Awurum, these guys would give some American comedy actors a run for their money.
So, these genres that we are good at, we can start from there. Creative writers can come up with concepts as good as ;Before Sunshine, when Harry met Sally, Mr Bean Holiday, Booksmart, Stepbrothers, Dumb & Dumber etc. Let's start from there first & perfect these genres we are a lil bit good at, then as time goes on, we can branch into other genres.
Trust me we Nigerians are very creative, but the situation or condition of the country is enough to eliminate any form of creativity one has. Are you trying to tell me that in all your years of seeing movies, you can't come up with & pen down a concept worthy of the big screens. Many of us work from 9-5 or even more, now tell me how easy it is for someone like that to pen down something creative, then, how about those in schools with atleast 15 courses to study a semester & destiny killing lectures to put up with daily. Now you are talking. You clearly know that Nollywood is not ripe for sci fi |

mekaprime2: The life wire of every movie is the concept, & secondly the execution. To some extent, the industry is getting those 2 figured out, that's the hope. You talk about acting schools, how many of em' popular Hollywood actors went to acting schools? Christian Bale, Jaoquin Phoenix, Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp etc never went to acting school, yet they turned out perfectly.
Yeah, video technology needs to be improved upon.
And as for those clamoring for opening of cinemas, opening cinemas all over the country & feeding these movies to em' is not really advisable, yes it'd curb piracy, but the big question is do we really have the content to showcase in this cinemas? How many folks do you think would go to the cinema to see a ritual orientated movie? A movie were by mere seeing the advert, i already know what happens to kanayo o kanayo, a movie i can predict perfectly. Fellas, we are looking at lots of box office bombs.
The above are not the things we should be bothered with right now. Let's first of all, improve on our concept, concept & execution/delivery, and every other thing would come eventually fall in place.
So, there's hope for the industry if we can work on the above. How does one get concepts for films? Are you aware that Nollywood has not produced one single high concept film? Something like inception, transcendence, in time etc Even if one doesnt go to acting schools, there are still coaches from acting schools that assist these big time actors in certain aspects of acting. For instance, a romance actor needs to do a fight scene- a movie choreographer would coach him. Great concepts can only come from philosophy. Just think about how someone came up with the idea of inception as a movie. If one is not exposed to art, logic and film history, it is unlikely that the persons mind will be able to develop a high concept movie script. |

mekaprime2: Isoken...6/10 Genre: Romance, Comedy Industry:Nollywood
Isoken graces us with that nostalgia of being black & African. The African culture, dressing, colours, music, wedding rites etc were well dramatized, so much so, that you just had to be proud of your black pigmentation.
Though not entirely original, cause I've seen similar concept somewhere, but it sure did pull it off plot wise, all thanks to creative copying. Excellent acting from the cast, nice cinematography & spot on directing.
The predictability was actually a cog in the wheel of progress, of what would have been a perfect Nollywood flick.
With flicks like this, there's really hope for our industry. Stop the village man sentiment. There is no hope for Nigerian movie industry. Unless we invest in theatres, film and acting schools and video technology (video editing, graphic design, sound engineering etc) |
