I traveled for 3 weeks.

I just returned.

I left my inverters hooked to my solar panels.

One was connected to utility power.

The other inverter was not connected.

I reduced the loads such that even if the sun was not generating enough PV power the batteries would not run out.

Would you have done what I had done or would you have powered down your unit or units?

I came back to meet everything as I left them.

I'd love your responses with reasons.

And by the way the panels are earthed and every earth is connected to or bonded to each other to be safe.

earthing the panels is no issue.. but you would be creating more danger if that earthi rod is not bonded with other earth rods in dat same structure becos they are not @ zero potential. I stand to be corrected

IMHO.. I think we are paying upfront insurances on these devices

SRNE is better, but Felicity has more presence in Nigeria from what I've seen.

But purely from a hardware quality perspective, SRNE is well ahead.

hello everyone, trying to make a decision between SRNE and felecity inverters.. for those who use SRNE inverters how would you rate it... are there service centers around lagos and does the company stand by its warranty claims

If i plug my laptop to nepa and put it on my bare laps it shocks me, but when i plug it to my inverter energy it does not shock... What could be the issue

have u tried another adapter? More also check the socket/extension you are connected to if there is any disconnected conductor.

Another question I want to ask if is ur inverter is grounded to earth?

In a TT system earth to neutral bonding happens between the consumer ground rod, and the ground rod installed at the NEPA transformer that serves your house. The neutral (that comes into your house from NEPA) and Earth electrode (installed at the transformer) is *suppose* to be bonded together. That transformer earth electrode/rod is connected to your house earth electrode (rod) using the mass of the soil / earth between them. The soil acts as the connector. Faults that goes into your earth rod finds its way to the transformer neutral via the transformer earth rod.

For this to work though, the earthing at the transformer level has to be properly done and not more than 5ohms in resistance. It most also be bonded to the neutral supplied from the same transformer and into your house.

Unfortunately, the above is not always the case, we see situation where transformer earthing is not properly done or the neutral is not bonded to it thus making the transformer run a floating neutral.

There is a test for checking if your electrode is bonded to your neutral (via the transformer ground) in a TT system. It is called ground impudence test. This test checks how much resistance exist between your earth rod and the transformer neutral. I don't know much about this impudence test but a competent ground tester should be able to check it out for you.

If you use an inverter, most inverters have MEN relays for when your inverter is operating offgrid or in island mode (in this case disconnected from NEPA) I know for sure that Axpert and SRNE have this MEN relay. It works by bonding ground to neutral when your system is off-grid or when NEPA is disconnected thus ensuring you maintain your earth to neutral bonding. The relay pretty much connects neutral to earth when NEPA goes and disconnects it when NEPA is on.

Some inverters like DEYE don't have this MEN relay hence allowing your system run in what is called floating neutral. You can use an external contactor to fix this but that is another rabbit hole.

Like everyone have added, you need to review your electrical fault system including your earthing. You said you had your earthing done, have you had the earthing independently tested to ensure that it is within the recommended resistance required of a TT earth system (which is pretty much what we practice in Nigeria)

You should also ensure that the earth point for all your electrical socket are well terminated, and those terminations are still functional. You can use a multimeter to carry out basic testhing. In my case I run the connect the red probe to the live, and neutral, note down the voltage (which should be around 230v) then I do this same this time with red to live and black probe to earth / ground (the top part of your electrical socket) it should also read 230v. This will let you know the socket it connected to a sort of ground. (It would not tell you how active your earthing is but it is a good indicator)

Light bulb test can also help, get an incandescent light bulb and connect it to live and earth. A well lit bulb indicate decent earthing. Run this across most of your socket to ensure they are well terminated to earth.

Non of the above test should replace a proper earth resistance test which can only be done with proper tooling and by a competent technician. Often time, NEPA officials tend to have this tool so you might want to reach out to your local NEPA office .. you might be able to have someone come run a test on your setup (off the record).

I attached a picture of my previous earthing setup.

For a TT system 200 ohms and below is recommended but anything below 100 ohms is ideal. The earth resistent tester should carry out test of the earth electrode and also check resistant from central earth bar (from your db)

Lastly on the Main Earth Neutral Bonding (MEN). This is not recommended for a TT system. A TT system is technically suppose to have MEN happen between your earth electrode (earth rod) and transformer neutral. The connection between your earth rod and the transformer neutral is meant to happen through the mass of the earth.. basically the soil / ground between your ground rod and your transformer ground (which is bonded to the neutral that comes into your house. (See the attached diagram)

You are suppose to have only 1 MEN in a circuit to ensure that ground loop fault have just 1 path of return. Bonding Earth to neutral in your DB creates multiple fault path because it technically means you have multiple Main earth to neutral.

Lastly, you might want to try installing an RCD to or an ELCB. The latter to detect earth leakage, the former to detect a fault in the system and trip (in other to save life)

Be careful though RCD can become a nuisance if your electrical connection is not properly made.

The big boss.. am tempted to ask where do we bond this our EARH TO NEUTRAL. I understand that the live and neutral wire from nepa pole end up @ ur meter unit where it is drawn to the db.. Most houses have just one db which powers the entire home. and i know for sure you can only have one EARTH TO NEUTRAL bonding..

Chai! How can I confirm the earth is functional? I re-earthed my house about a decade ago when I noticed some appliances were shocking. The culprit at that time was a bridge between neutral and earth in one of the sockets. I used the opportunity to install a more robust earthing wiring to easily allow me connect more equipment in a DIY manner without having to call an electrician.

IMHO, if u had a main db in that house and bonded ur neutral to earth.. i think only that breaker controlling the fridge will trip. and that shock wont be there. U touchin the fridge seems to complete the circuit for flow of current.

. There is more to this earthing stuff than wat the eye can see.... EXperts in the house,, does anyone have experience bonding neutral and earthing on ur main db panel?

Update on my setup.

Sometime last month I connected all my AC to the smart load of my inverter, and noticed that the inverter was going off and on repeatedly for like 5x before stabilizing back on. This would happen severely in a day before the sun goes down as I discovered it only happens during the day.

As a result I reverted back to the previous connection and disabled the smart load thinking that was my issue, but it still persisted, so I did some reading online and concluded it might be a software bug.

I emailed Deye and requested for diagnosis and update which they did by pushing a remote firmware update to the inverter, yet the issue continued (in my mind I was like I spent huge money to buy a faulty batch of an expensive inverter). I sent an update email yesterday to Deye explaining that the issue is not yet resolved (yet to get an update though) after it happened for the 2nd time in the morning (around 11am). At this point I thought it wise to calm down and observe the inverter when next it happens rather than be angry, so I stayed put in front of the inverter and watched it.

Few minutes later it happened again this time around I was watching the screen and boom I caught it in the act and it happens to be that the voltages of 2 strings of panels attached to the 2 MPPTs of the inverter exceeded the max 500v of the inverter (string 1 5x Longi 570w panels was pumping 240v+ as at that time while string 2 5x Jinko 625w panels were pushing over 265v both exceeding the 500v max voltage).

As I saw that I quickly switched off string 1 breaker and the inverter stabilized instantly which suggests that the input of the 2 MPPTs are somehow connected in series or something like that as one of the MPPTs can take 500v alone but the 2 MPPTs combined together is still 500v.

No matter what you do, do not exceed the max voltage of your inverter and take not of the tolerance of the VOC of your panels when connecting your panels to your CC or inverter to avoid stories just in case your inverter or CC is not equipped to handle any form voltage spike above the rated max voltage of the inverter or CC.

My panel's PV parallel current exceeds 22A, which is the maximum PV input current of Growatt SPD5000ES.

I don't have doubt you can over panel it; maybe with panels that has Isc of less than 11A. Mine is 13.4A

even if u stay safe within the limits of voc.. wat abt Isc. Most piple believe an inv will just take wat it needs and leave the rest. Which i doubt esp wen i see error code of over current on the manual of any inv..

I don't even know what to type here . I have bought 2 batteries from Valto and they work well till dat since 2 years ago, Buying from Valto which is a coupled batteries , I gave room for any sort of small issues . His batteries are good and new better than felicity. I would rather get batteries off Valto and learn how to couple them than spend 3.5 million for all these big names , I guess because I am a technical person.

Valto is a trader in my terms and I don't also expect customer services from him like a big company .

My conclusion is simple , Not because your inverter went off today or the battery has some issues make Valto a bad dealer . He is a good honest seller. I am looking for money to get 2 more batteries from him .

Sorry for your inconvenience sha . Right now I have my inverter with Victron for over a month , I have been chasing them but no response. Lets jus try and manage ourselves please

Why take the risk exceeding the Voc, when you can just over panel with parallel strings? And have a wider power curve?

Growatt spf5000 are well known to handle overpanelling so long as you don’t exceed the voc. Some guy even had 15kw on his spf5000.

Just overpanel with parallel strings with a lower safer VOC

That wouldn't be possible with my set up but not impossible with a much larger set up.

what model of epever controller do u use... the reason i asked is because you are on 12v and the highest 150v epever controller can only make use of 1250w of pv power and that is the 100a version.... i understand you are using 350w x8 pcs which in my own case translates to either 250w or 200w that is if they are tier 1 panels...... i like keeping tins simple....
