You read this thing in the holy bible or quran?. Salvation is not by hard work my dear. If it's by hard work, Jesus wouldn't have died.
What? You mean you have deleted this verse from your bible. Grace is not a license for irresponsibility. Even with grace every christian still has a cross to carry. Lets not derail this thread, but remember when one of the disciples asked our Lord "Are there few that be saved ?" He answered "Strive Ye to enter"

You may start a thread on this ,trust me , I will respond appropriately but lets not derail this thread.

As controversial as this seems, I want to correct a notion commonly held by most forumists posting here NO PASTOR IS TOO BIG FOR HELL OR ETERNAL DAMNATION There is NOTHING HID BEFORE GOD WITH WHOM WE HAVE TO DO. Men may sing our praise but God judges even to the very intents of the heart.

The bible enjoins us all to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. If moses with his measure of meekness and general closeness to God could not make the promised land, then what are we talking about?l.

I will not make further comments on this issue until I hear what Obadare is doing about his own bit of the revelation.

Christianity EtcDavid Did Not Kill Goliath: Is This True? by brotherly(op): 11:12am On Oct 12, 2009
I read this from a next columnist and it got me confused as to the extent certian people can go to disapprove what is a clearly accepted fact in christendom. I have a lot questions for the writer and seem to be struggling with how to compress them.

I know we have a lot of bible scholars here. what do you guys think of this piece?

David was not averse to taking credit for other people’s achievements in his kingdom. Although it was Joab who captured Rabbah, David took the credit (2 Sam 12:26-31). Similarly, the killing of Goliath was originally part of a collection of stories in which heroes of David’s army killed giants (2 Sam 21:15-22). But soon, David himself was substituted for one of the giant-killers.

Two different Goliath Killers

1 Samuel says David killed Goliath; but 2 Samuel credits it to Elhanan; one of David’s mighty men: “In another battle with the Philistines at Gob, Elhanan son of Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite” (2 Sam 21:19). The King James Bible version that Elhanan killed “the brother of Goliath” is a blatant doctoring of the bible. The words “the brother of” are in italics, indicating they are not in the original Hebrew manuscript but were added at the discretion of King James translators.

So who killed Goliath; David or Elhanan? The evidence indicates it was certainly not David. Under Rehoboam, Israel became divided into two kingdoms; one pro-David: the other anti-David. Both gave conflicting historical reports which were later edited into the bible. As a result, the biblical record about David killing Goliath is full of contradictions and inconsistencies.

Conflicting Reports

David is initially described as “a man of war” (1 Sam 16:18); so how can he be simultaneously a youth untrained for war? (1 Sam 17:33). He lives in the palace with Saul (1 Sam 16:19-23); so how can he, at the same time, live at home with his father? (1 Sam 17:17-18). He is Saul’s armour-bearer (1 Sam 16:21); so how come he is unable to carry Saul’s armour? (1 Sam 17:38-39). Saul personally employs him as harp-player before he kills Goliath (1 Sam 16:23); so how come we suddenly discover after he kills Goliath that Saul has never met him before?

(1 Sam 17:55-58). David kills Goliath with a catapult (1 Sam 17:50); so how can he also kills him with a sword? (1 Sam 17:51). After he kills Goliath, he takes his head to Jerusalem (1 Sam 17:54); so how come when he is later introduced to Saul, he is still carrying Goliath’s head in his hand? (1 Sam 17:57-58).

David runs to the Philistines

Indeed, David could not have carried Goliath’s head to Jerusalem after killing him because the Israelites did not capture Jerusalem from the Jebusites until much later, after David had become King (2 Sam 5:6-7). After ostensibly killing Goliath, David is compelled to run for his life from Saul. But of all the places to run to, he ends up in Philistine territory. Of all the cities he could choose for safety, he chooses Gath , the very hometown of Goliath (1 Sam 27:3-11).

Surely, if David really killed Goliath, Goliath’s hometown would be the last place he would run to for refuge. That is a sure way for him to get killed. But instead, David is welcome in Gath by Goliath’s people.

He even applies to join the Philistine army in a war against Israel (1 Sam 29:1-11).

This is just not credible.

How are we to believe that a teenager who is an errand-boy at lunchtime becomes a five-star General by suppertime, to the approval of everyone including the more seasoned soldiers? (1 Sam 18:5). It beggars belief that, in answering the Goliath challenge, Saul would place the destiny of Israel on the shoulders of a little boy armed only with a catapult.

The story of little David killing mighty Goliath is endearing. It might even be profitable for spiritual instruction. But it is essentially pro-Davidic propaganda, and not an accurate portrait of events.

False Prophecies

Even prophecies about David in the bible are polemical. One of them says: “David will never fail to have a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel, nor will the priests, who are Levites, ever fail to have a man to stand before me continually to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings and to present sacrifices” (Jer 33:17-18). This is a false prophecy that must have been inserted by pro-David priests into Jeremiah’s writings. Zedekiah was the last king of Davidic lineage in Israel . He was killed along with all his sons. From Zedekiah to Jesus, no son of David sat on the throne of Israel .

From AD 70 to date, no Levite has offered burnt offerings and sacrifices.

Jeremiah himself complains about scribes inserting falsehood surreptitiously into the scriptures. He writes: “How can you say, ‘We are wise, for we have the law of the Lord,’ when actually the lying pen of the scribes has handled it falsely?” (Jer 8:cool

Christianity EtcRe: Is It Really Sinful To Take Alcohol? by brotherly: 9:14pm On Sep 18, 2009
KunleOshob:
We are not in agreement O! the fact still remains that Jesus our ultimate example clearly used to consume alcohol on a regular basis {luke 7:33-34 makes this very clear, even if you decided to ignore the obvious} Your analogies don't hold water as their is no place in the bible which even remotely suggests christian should not consume alcohol if any thing at all it is endorsed by the actions of Jesus and the apostles. You are obviously trying to force your bias into the bible through the linking of unrelated scriptures to butress your point whilst ignoring the very obvious facts that those Christ himself and the apostles indulged in the consumption of the very alcohol you are implying christians should not drink. I am sure you are aware that it is a sin to add to or remove from th scriptures  cheesy. My position remains as far as the bible is corcernd: Moderation is key.
God bless.
On the bolded parts, I think you are not being fair here. My posts do not in anyway portray that.

On this issue I am of the assumption that we are christians with the altimate aim of being the best we can  for God. I am also of the assumption that we are prepared to "sacrifice our right hand"  instead of eternal damnation with the whole body.

My post has solely been based on the fact that drunkenness and addiction are sin.

However, due to the biblical concerns regarding alcohol and its effects, due to the easy temptation to consume alcohol in excess, and due to the possibility of causing offense and/or stumbling of others, due to the ease of making mistakes that an affect generations (ask Lot and Noah)  it is usually best for a Christian to abstain entirely from drinking alcohol.

KunleOshob:
Colossians 2:16-23:

16 So don’t let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths. 17 For these rules are only shadows of the reality yet to come. And Christ himself is that reality. 18 Don’t let anyone condemn you by insisting on pious self-denial or the worship of angels,[a] saying they have had visions about these things. Their sinful minds have made them proud, 19 and they are not connected to Christ, the head of the body. For he holds the whole body together with its joints and ligaments, and it grows as God nourishes it.

20 You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as, 21 “Don’t handle! Don’t taste! Don’t touch!”? 22 Such rules are mere human teachings about things that deteriorate as we use them. 23 These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires.
Yes you are correct but we must note that we all learners in scriptural matters and must also use scripture to explain scripture.

To corroborate your point paul even said that:

1Co 8:4  Then concerning the eating of the things sacrificed to idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no other God except one.
1Co 8:5  For though there are those who are called gods, whether in Heaven or in earth (as there are many gods and many lords),
1Co 8:6  but there is to us only one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we by Him.
1Co 8:7  But this knowledge is not in all. But some being aware of the idol eat as an idolatrous sacrifice until now, and their conscience being weak is defiled.
1Co 8:8  But food does not commend us to God. For neither if we eat are we the better, nor if we do not eat are we the worse.

but later in revelation JESUS chatised the church in Thyatira that:

Rev 2:20  But I have a few things against you because you allow that woman Jezebel to teach, she saying herself to be a prophetess, and to cause My servants to go astray, and to commit fornication, and to eat idol-sacrifices
.

This explains that what we eat or drink still matters , this we will understand only if we explain scripture with scritpure.
Christianity EtcRe: Is It Really Sinful To Take Alcohol? by brotherly: 4:59pm On Sep 15, 2009
KunleOshob:
@Brotherly
But Jesus christ never stayed away from alcohol, are you suggesting we should be holier than him?
I am sure you agree that he did not indulge in alcohol either

Guy, I think my explanation is clear, the concluding verses fom romans 14 as stated by Paul after the death of christ is straight forward.

I have never been part of those who explain away the water to wine miracle as non alcoholic , however we do not have a right to add what is not expressly stated in the bible. Aside the passover , there is scarcely any reference that says he took wine.

Yes he said " the son of man came eating and drinking and you say behold a glutton and a winebiber" but from the bible we have very scant reference to when he even ate so the glutton talk was way off, hence we can even infer same in the case of wine.

I will however like to know what your advice to christians is, especially in times like this when keeping faith is a struggle in the face of the deluge of temptations .
Christianity EtcRe: Is It Really Sinful To Take Alcohol? by brotherly: 4:21pm On Sep 15, 2009
This is definitely a contentious topic. One has to be careful not to either misinterpret the bible or to give approval to frivolities.

There is nowhere in the bible where alcohol is expressly stated as a sin . We must however understand that the context of sin is “to him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not to him it is sin” and “all unrighteousness is sin”

For those differentiating wine from alcohol, we have to be truthful here. Wine as depicted in the Bible almost always has some form of alcohol. Noah drank wine from the proceeds of his vineyard and messed up. The cases of John the baptist , any Nazarene and the Rechabites in Jeremiah’s time all clearly depict that wine in bible times had some alcohol. It was always a case of “TAKE NEITHER WINE NOR STRONG DRINK”

However we of the new testament (especially in perilous times like ours ) need to understand the scriptures from the level of Holy spirit’s direction

“as many as are led by the spirit the same are the sons of God”

“ But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth”

The Christian race is not one easy walk, it involves godly wisdom, grace and optimum sobriety. I have sensed that while there is no outright condemnation of alcohol , I have always struggled with God’s spirit to take alcohol. Secondly I am most times at my weakest level spiritually and more prone to sin whenever I take alcohol. Hence while I can not say alcohol to me is a sin , it is however a weight that hinders
“Seeing that we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses let us lay aside every weight and the sin which doth easily beset us, and ………………let us run with patience the race that is set before us.”

The bible is replete with great errors that were fueled by alcohol--- Lot and his daughters, Noah, Ahab etc.

Looking at it from the angle of love in helping other peoples faith and not standing as a hinderance to peoples salvation ,there are a lot of unbelievers that will find it difficult to get saved if they find a matured Christian drinking alcohol, there are a lot of young Christians that have backslid because they heard that they are free to take alcohol without getting drunk but have tried and lost their Christian faith completely.
The overriding factor for everyone therefore should be what paul said
Rom 14:15 If you are hurting others by the foods you eat, you are not guided by love. Don't let your appetite destroy someone Christ died for.
Rom 14:16 Don't let your right to eat bring shame to Christ.
Rom 14:17 God's kingdom isn't about eating and drinking. It is about pleasing God, about living in peace, and about true happiness. All this comes from the Holy Spirit.

AS MUCH AS IT IS WITHIN YOUR POWER, STAY AWAY FROM ALCOHOL

Good point man.

You see Nigeria is such a corrupt country such that those that profess to be working  for  public good  in the end simply work to line their pockets. This applies to our hungry journalists.

Who in this country did not hear of the IFC probe and how soludo was cleared? It is with this form of sensational "big news " that our corrupt leaders with the help of journalist manipulate us.

Very soon they will tactically  soft-pedal on this banking issue and "redirect" us to either Harlliburton, Amnesty, "boko aram in lagos", etc. In the end we exchange our hard-earned money for the fake news . They go home richer, get their cuts from politicians and we remain with our underdevelopment. Abeg make we wise up.

The banking system needs cleansing , but it must be done the proper way or else even Sanusi  will start fighting credibilty battle for  CBN.

Christianity EtcRe: How Can Get Rid Of Eating In My Dreams by brotherly: 9:30pm On Apr 24, 2009
Please do not take it lightly. We christians are most times either overreactive to the devil or totally insensitive.

The first step is that you have to be born-again. This translates you from the dominion of the devil to the kingdom of light. VERY VERY KEY.

The next step is to activate the power of GOD in your life through his word and prayers. The bible says "we are complete in HIM(CHRIST) who is the head of principalities and power".

Another advice is that in real life you need to check you appetite, there may be some problems there.

Christianity EtcRe: Is Is Right For A Christian To Pray Back To Sender Prayer by brotherly: 12:01am On Feb 07, 2009
Well I think this question is very tricky but we must try to find balance in our dealings with people.

The danger of the back to sender prayer is that without understanding some christians now use it as ground to
present christainity as a combative religion and it engenders the false feeling that every problem is caused by our enemies
even when some of the problems are allowed by God to build maturity in us. In cases like this the message of love
which is the core of christianity is lost. Jesus even enjoined us to love our enemies and pray for them that despitefully use us.

However in cases where some of this enemies have seemingly sold their souls to the devil and by demonic
means strive to subvert ones destiny expecially in africa then the back to sender prayer may not be wrong.
paul made a statment to timothy " Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense
tribulation to them that trouble you" 2TIM 1:6

Paul said " WE wrestle". No be for play o.

Besides the back to sender is only a request to God to help bring to pass, so as the bible says
"If we ask anything according to his will he hears us" If the back to sender prayer is wrong God will only
not grant it. Nothing loss.

We dey learn everyday

This is the conclusion of the whole matter "He is really good in bed LOL maybe that's why I still hang around I don't know"

In a country like ours where things can go awry any minute, u can hardly put so much blame on a guy for being jobless , that is if he is putting serious effort to better his status. But when a man is so comfortable collecting money from you and also extending the goddies to his family members then there is a chronic problem.

The truth is the guy feels you are paying him for the good sex and will not be serious about enhancing his financial status , even if he does it is surely not for you, he most likely will meet another lady to show is sexual prowess to. Psychologically the guy feels u are hooked, from ur talk it will really take strong will to break out , even if u do he will be hopeful u will still come back.
The first thing u should do is to dig into his history ,I sincerely doubt if you are the first victim, after you some others will still fall.

The guy no like u and u know like am period . U GO FOR SEX , HE COMES FOR YOUR MONEY. Things can really change and it must begin with you.
RomanceRe: I've Had Enough Of Men! by brotherly: 10:08pm On Aug 30, 2008
Well my advice to u is that for everyone  that walks out on u , there are always lessons to learn. If after every failed relationship , it is still the same ssheryl the next person meets then the problem could just be U. I will sure not subscribe to the "player status" that some are recommending because even with that  casualties abound.

One thing I will recommend is that u lookout for a true friend that will act the mirror for u. U need someone who will tell u the truth about urself without fear or favour and guide u on areas u need to improve upon. For now just work on massive self improvement -- temprament , clealiness, friendliness, honesty etc . Improve ur self worth and the world(men) will value u rightly.
CareerRe: 60% Of Bankers To Lose Their Jobs? by brotherly: 6:08pm On Aug 26, 2008
This can not  be true, we are likely to have some shake up in the industry soon but it will sure not come close to the 60% mark. All banks in the country are fast opening new branches and expanding there frontiers outside the shores of this country. This expansion drive will sure be jeopadized by massive layoffs . The banks have not automated their processes enough to  survive corely on technology. Even the banks that are high up in the automation lather still have to constantly involve manual checks and corrective measures.

While I agree that banks should serve as  catalyst in economic growth we must not be so passionate to forget that the banks are business entities that want to maximise returns on investment. In a country like ours with very unpredicatble inflation rates, policy reversals and poor infrastructure , the incentive for medium and long term investments by the banks that will translate economic growth thins out by the day.   A lot of the SMES will not survive even with loans because the overheads are exaggerated by poor infrastructure.

While I am not comfortable with the jumbo profits declared by the banks , I must quickly add that i will never buy the shares of any bank whose books are not sound.

I believe a sizable proportion of bankers are doing the job for lack of options. This government should stabilize the polity as is obtainable in developed countries, then I feel compettion will force banks to make the needed change.
