Even when you enjoy with friends and family, you'll still suffer and die alone. It's the bitter truth called life.
That must be your own bitter truth called life, Dion.

When I suffered my friends and family were rocks by my side encouraging me to desuffer, so perhaps your truth called life differs to mine.

But the studies involving the Soul exist in Philosophy!
Not everything logical or Scientific is physical or biological sciences!
I do not think philosophers call themselves scientists, but correct me if I am wrong.

TenQ:
I have no problem with using the mind and the soul synonymously.

Only that I feel that the mind is a little restrictive as it concentrates more on the intellect and less on emotion or will of a person.
I do have a problem using mind and soul synonymously because they are not synonyms at all. Nor does my soul feel my emotions for me. I feel my emotions myself!

I am not sure to what extent the question of souls is a matter of science at the physical level, at least not the science of today.
Soul doesn't appear in science at all, as far as I know, so it was rather odd that TenQ wants to discuss it scientifically.

But I guess that's what those who generalise on insufficient information would do, thinking others might not know any better.

How do you conclude I don't provide for my friends?
You don't have any friends to provide for by your very own submission Dion, where you were moaning about finding friends, so how can you possibly be providing for friends you do not yet have?

HenryDion:
It's alone in the top.

See me spending the Val alone, in the pool.

I really need friends here, but what if they turn me to their ATM?

If I go broke they will run.

I need real friends but they are hard to find.

In the meantime, self love.
HenryDion:
And yes, capitalism is bad.

The very cause of poverty.

Change my mind!
Change your mind? You'd have to tell me what you think capitalism is first and how it is bad, for me to know your mind and then to consider if I wanted to change it or not.

But lets take your friend issue. They want to receive from you without giving anything back, which is the opposite of capitalism.

Would you mind if they worked for you, earning you profit from which you pay their wages? Would either you or them be poor under such an arrangement?

TenQ:
You have never seen God, yet you know/believe He is!
Wrong, TenQ. buda has never seen God but understands what people mean by God.

TenQ:
In the scientific community, we have what is called a THEORY!

A theory attempts to explain the unknown by what is known.
Last time I checked, a theory based on insufficient information is not presented as fact, but as a start point for seeking facts, unlike you who present a generalisation based on insufficient information as fact.

TenQ:
No one has be able to cut open a body and bring out the mind/soul. Meaning that until that happens, every understanding about the mind/soul will be just a THEORY!
When scientists discuss how the universe began, they state that that is as far as they can determine, and they are open to new discoveries. You TenQ, however, present generalisations based on insufficient evidence as facts.

I have not read your responses to others, but I do expect the scientists amongst them to disagree with you a lot on souls.

I'm grateful for where I am, and what I have. It hurts me that there are people out there who don't even have food to eat. Let's blame capitalism. Because there's enough food to feed the the entire human population.
Why? Should the entire human population eat free food? And who is supposed to provide it for them when you yourself are not even providing for your 'friends', lol?

TenQ:
Of cause, the "me" cannot be your brain!
The "me" in this case is the unseen you inside your body. It is the one who feels all the emotions and makes all the decisions you make.

Just as your Physical Identity is your BODY, your Soul is your Internal/Personal Identity.
Hmm. Your soul is that which your mind identifies as you? (I say, mind, on the assumption that is where you ability to be conscious resides).

I don't have an "Internal/Personal Identity", TenQ. I find that my mind constantly evolves as I feed it with knowledge and experiences, and the ability to reflect has ensured the feedback loop creates constant flux so that buda saying buda identifies as this or that would be untrue almost immediately after it is said.

Others do label one with personal identity however, though obviously not internal, but I find they often have insufficient information and are just generalising.

TenQ:
Now, just as you feed your body with food and other nutrition for it to grow well, you also feed your soul but this time with Knowledge and Experience!
I would claim it is my mind that I feed with knowledge and experience and learning with my entire being too for it to grow well, me being a huge fan of ask and knock and seek with all one's heart and soul and mind and being.

Can we agree that where you say soul I say mind? It has to do with the level of control one has over either, I think.
Christianity Etc › Re: Matter And Mind by budaatum: 10:43pm On Feb 15, 2022
TenQ:
Perhaps you have gotten me wrong.
By personal Identity/Internal Identity, I mean
1. how you recognise yourself as you
2. how you don't confuse yourself with another person
3. The person you describe as ME, MYSELF, I
4. Your consciousness

It has nothing to do with how you want to perceive yourself. It certainly has nothing to do with ones status
Are you saying my consciousness is my soul?

TenQ:
In summary: We do not have sufficient information similar to that which we have with softwares acting on a computer: thus, we can only generalise
Do you not see a problem with this? Why would I generalise about something I admit to having insufficient information about? Is that not the same as ignorantly asserting?

Consider how you would react if I generalise about what you in fact have more information about. Would I not sound rather ignorant if my insufficiently informed generalisation does not conform to your own knowledge or the actual facts?

I think one should just admit one does not have sufficient information and go look for more information instead of believing ones insufficiently informed generalising and then asking others to believe it too.

One may not be able to localise or locate exactly where the soul resides in the body because it isn't tangible. But one can say that there seems to be a strong interface between the operations of the soul and the nervous system (including the brain).
Really? Perhaps define soul.

TenQ:
Just as your Physical Identity is your BODY, your Soul is your Internal/Personal Identity.
I can not argue that you might identify me by my physical body, TenQ, though grabbing the trunk of an elephant does come to mind, but I would object to your claim that my Internal/personal identity is some sort of soul.

Personal Identity is simply how one identifies oneself, as in, how one sees or describes oneself, and nothing to do with some imaginary soul. I may drive a huge car for instance, earn good money and live in a big house and identify my self as successful, but none of that would be describing what you term a soul. One may also identify oneself as a Samaritan when one might truly be a Levite of a Priest.

killyaselfie:
The mind itself is nothing but a product of arrangement and interaction of matter. And it doesn’t matter how much you believe otherwise..

This is what Francis Crick, codiscoverer of the structure of DNA, called “The Astonishing Hypothesis.” In Crick’s words, “You, your joys and your sorrows, your memories and your ambitions, your sense of personal identity and free will, are in fact no more than the behavior of a vast assembly of nerve cells and their associated molecules.”
This can not possibly be true!

If it were true, all our minds would work the same way and we'd all reason the same way, except for the fact that while our minds might be a product of how we individually arranged our interaction with matter which differs immensely, our behavior can therefore not just be a "vast assembly of nerve cells and their associated molecules" which we all pretty much have in common.

Just as we don't all have the same hardware (I'm missing a sixpack), so have we not all developed our minds to work the same way which would be the case if minds were "vast assembly of nerve cells and their associated molecules", is my unauthorised point.

TenQ:
What is the Soul?
The Soul is the self/personal/internal IDENTITY of a person: the source of our WILL, INTELLECT and EMOTION! These three effects of the Soul is called the MIND! Someone like me sees the soul as the Software of the Body (hardware).
I love the fact that you recognise that others might not see like you see. I, for instance, do not see souls at all, never have, though I do witness the functioning of minds in their respective bodies like their software propelling their physical hardware.

To me, TenQ's soul is not TenQ (self/personal/internal IDENTITY), nor is your soul responsible for the development of your mind (software).

What effects the mind is how well the self/personal/internal IDENTITY of TenQ bothered to propel TenQ to develop TenQ's "WILL, INTELLECT and EMOTION" and that learning is what forms TenQ's self/personal/internal IDENTITY identity, as seen especially by those who do not merely rely on the material hardware they see nor on their assumption of their understanding of softwares alone but on the produced fruit of the being too.

A different seeing I suppose, though chicken and eggy.

It seems you don't understand the question. The mind and the body are a singular unit which much like an autonomous vehicle is a working combination of intangible and tangible, you on the other hand believe that mind is an aspect of soul/spirit that drives the body like a human driven vehicle. My question is how can we tell which position is correct.

The facts on ground do not support the view that some spirit/soul is driving the body. They have consistent point to the fact the mind and the body are a functional unit not a duality.
Perhaps some knowledge of the history of the topic might help.

DeepSight:
Honestly you deeply befuddle me. I don't know what you mean here. For what it's worth, what I mean by "consistency" there is simpy cogency against known factors and our collective as well as subjective experiences of the nature of our lives and being.
You are beffudled, which is funny since you are supposed to deeply see. Good too, since you must look beyond the mere material to be unbeffudled, which should be easy since you are not one to focus only on the material, lets assume.

Read this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Materialism?wprov=sfla1 and tell me if any human you know has "consistency", or "simpy cogency", or "subjective experiences" of the relevant "known factors" not to talk of be against them, and then tell me where they acquire this so called "collective".

I must honestly tell you that I generally have a hard time understanding you: in this instance let us be clear - there are evolutionists who are materialists and there are evolutionists who are not (in fact the Catholic Church endorses belief in evolution). So I dont understand how I have strawmanned all evolutionists: I have merely spoken about the strict materialists who evidently have no recourse to anything beyond matter in arriving at the explanation for life and consciousness/ mind.

I just dont understand you. I haven't offered any "theory of everything." What I have done is simply question the consistency of the materialist worldview.
"Strict materialist"? Try "strict Christian", or "strict Muslim". Tell me if that does not sound absurd to you unless you consider a religious terrorist.

Does the "strict materialist" also learn doctrines they must all believe without questioning?

I therefore say that there is as yet no proof that life, with its unique properties (especially the property of reproduction / self replication) could have arisen spontaneously - virtually magically - from otherwise dead matter - not to speak of then evolving into minds.
I'm going to deal only with the above.

Evolutionists make no claim that life rose spontaneously. They'll tell you life evolved over a very long period of time, but that aside.

I guess from the above, no God could possibly have created humans neither, since the process of creations we read describes a "spontaneously - virtually magically" creation, and out of nothing, of which there is no evidence whatsoever.

First, they have been marginalised. Second, in many parts they continue to be marginalised. But I guess sitting in Nigeria you'd not know.

I spoke to a friend who just relocated to Czech Republic. Master's school fees £200. Wages £1200 a month. He said he submitted his first paper in school and was told he plagirised. He was shocked. They taught him nothing in Naija he said.

That's how we marginalize in Nigeria. We teach ourselves to believe we know what we obviously know nothing about.

To be honest with you Ben, you are making it hard for me to observe Sunday Rules, and I'm even beginning to doubt I could possibly stick to Disstroy's all week rule!

The above shows you have not bothered to read the book because what you claim is very clearly not written in it nor is it even inferred, and anyone who implies that what you are claiming is what is in the book, is either being evil or is just plain ignorant and I can't honestly decide which is worse.

Do know that what is written in the book does apply to all teachings, and that biases in the education system does a lot of damage to those being 'taught', and while a government should rightly ensure equity in a school system, a parent must go much further and seek superior education for their offspring. That is the reason some chose to pay their child's school fees instead of sending their children to free state schools. It's to get superior education for their child, and not equity education that government schools provide!
