"Sasha might not like this...you know." Cassandra whispered to her aunt, as they both assisted in giving Sasha's bedroom a new look.

"hmmm" Ashley grunted, putting a pin in her mouth.

"I don't think she've got taste for girlish stuffs." Cassandra continued.

"Maybe you should ask Kenny." Ashley gestured towards her son who was busy on phone talking to God knows who.

"eku ishe ooo" Barbra cooed as she walked into the room holding a large pink bear.

"Mummy I want...mummy I want..." Cassandra and Kola cried.

"Weldone sister mi." Barbra patted her sister ignoring them.

"mummy pulleeaase...I want it nao" Kola continued to whine.

"Its for your sister." Barbra replied tossing it on the kingsized bed she had ordered earlier.

"You mean Sasha?" Kenny scoffed.
"she might not like that you know" he continued pocketing his phone.

"You think so?"

"I'm not sure...but the Sasha I know, might not like all these stuffs." Kenny shrugged.

There was a moment of silence, everybody weighing his words.

"now why is everybody wearing a long face? Wait till she come nah." Kenny consoled.

"Yea she might be a changed person now." Kola put in, secretly wishing she would reject the bear and hand it over to him.

"Mr man. The last time I spoke to your father, he said her memory is intact...so?" Ashley rolled her eyes.

"maybe we should get back to work." Barbra noted.

"Yea sure! Kola get me those nails..." Kenny resumed his part of the job.

"Aburo, lemme show you the things I bought." Barbra led her sister out of the room, leaving the kids all to themselves.

They almost bumped into Joyce who was about to go out. Her baby strapped to her back and a baby bag in her hand.

"You're going out?" Barbra asked.

"Yes!" Joyce snapped as if to say 'noo, I'm coming in."

"You're taking the baby along? She's not up three weeks old...don't you think its too risky to...you know take her out in this hot weather?" Barbra continued in her careful manner.

"The child is mine, and I'm free to take her where ever I choose...risky or whatever." Joyce replied rudely before heading to the exit.

"That's sooo good! I wish she added more insults to that statement." Ashley clapped.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Barbra probed.

"Mrs Good Woman, thats what you want to be called shebi? I pray next time you carry yourself to her place, you'd leave the scene a black eye as a result of the slaps you'd recieve."

"Thats an insult." Babra frowned.

"Insult ke? Cos I told you the truth? When that iya Aje insulted you, did you say anything? Weren't you smiling like what I don't know?" Ashley continued.

"Ash.."

"If you like; even when the test proves the child isn't your husband's, beg her to continue staying here shogbo?" Ashley cut in.

"Whatever!" Babra stamped to the kitchen.

"yes oo! I won't stop telling you the truth o, till those scales fall off your eyes." Ashley clapped after her.

Joyce took deep breathes as she stepped her foot into the spacious compound. Was it a compound or a qtrs? It encloses four flats situated at different ends. John lives in one of them, she prayed he hasn't moved out of the flat yet.
She knocked gently on the door she was so used to, whilst wiping her sweaty forehead with the other hand. She was considering taking her leave when she heard the door click open.

"Good afternoon o, na who you dey find?" a young girl in her early twenties asked peeping out.

"Errrm..." Joyce hesitated.
"Please I'm looking for John, He lives here."

"Ehen..who you be?" the girl asked again.

"Please he's in?" Joyce ignored her question.

"Him no dey, any message for am? Na me be im wife, tell me I go deliver your message." the girl offered.

Joyce's eyes popped out, just then did she discover the girl's slightly protruding tummy.
The headache she've been nursing for days increased- it felt like some one was using her head for 'panel beating experiment', she closed and opened her eyes just be sure she wasn't dreaming.

"Madam shey you dey okay o, dis one wey you dey close eye so, no go faint for here o."

Joyce swallowed hard, slowly she started to walk away on her jellylike legs.

"Adanma, you and who dey talk?" a thick voice asked emerging for the back yard.

Joyce held her breathe spinning sharply. Their eyes met, and tears rolled down her cheeks- all hope was lost.

Kenny followed his mother with his eyes as she walked past him aimlessly to and fro the kitchen, he quickly looked away each time she caught him staring. He had decided earlier to keep to himself, he wouldn't eat; he always replied their conversations with either a nod or shaking his head. Normally, his parents would all go begging and petting him, but this time around they seemed to care less.

He forced himself to concentrate on the TV as his mother walked back to the living room, she was all dressed for an outing. She dropped a duffel bag few metres away from him, perched on a sofa and began to touch-up her make-up; smacking her lips noisily.

Kenny looked at his mother, then the duffel bag; he wanted to ask her what's up, but his pride as a pampered child won't let him. Soon his father walked into the living room going straight to the Tv stand to pick his car keys.

Kenny quickly glanced at the wall clock to be sure if it wasn't past 9pm already.

"Honey are you set?" Jide clinked the keys.

"Yea , we need to hurry up." Ashley gave him the duffel bag while she picked her hand bag.

"Where are you going by this time?" Kenny asked breaking his rule.

No reply. Next he heard the door bang behind him, they were leaving.
He gasped in fear of the unknown.

"Dad?... Mummy..." he ran after them to the garage.

"What?" Jide retorted standing by the car.

"Where are you going to?"

"We're leaving the house for you." Ashley replied.

"What for?" Kenny looked confused.

"Well...I and my beautiful wife can't stay under the same roof with an angry little man." Jide replied.
"We're gonna book a room in a hotel till we're able to get an apartment, then we'd come to pack our things."

"but... What have I done?" Kenny asked fear clearly written all over his face.

"I thought you're no longer in talking terms with everybody? Your name is on the papers of this property, so we're leaving your house for you." Ashley queried

"Mummy please nah...I'm your only child o" he pleaded.

"Only child ke? What makes you think my wife can't give me more kids if I want? " Jide feigned annoyance.
Ashley smiled secretly, her husband was a genius.

"Daddy please nah...I promise I won't do it again..mum please help me beg daddy...you can't leave me all alone, you're all I've got." Kenny was on his knees.

"Honey please..."

"Ehn ehn! Don't even start, I'm leaving this house o, and you must leave with me." Jide threatened.

"Honey please...he's already begging." Ashley managed to retain the laughter bubbling up her throat.

"Okay...so no more keeping malice, no more anger, no more tantrums, and no more hunger strike?" Jide ruled out.

Kenny quickly nodded.
"I'm a new person already, I promise to be a good son.".

"fine then, but you have to prove that. firstly...I want you to go eat up your dinner." Jide ordered.

"Thank you daddy-mummy." Kenny scrambled to his feet taking the duffel bag from them.

"We're winning." Ashley whispered as she watched her son scampered into the main building.

"I told you...we need not pet him, give it to him the hard way and he'll bend." Jide laughed hugging his excited wife- who was worried over her son's 'changed attitude'.

"Maybe you should tell us the reason behind the 'attitude' ". Jide said as they both watched kenny down his food as fast as he could.

"I wanna go back to India...to Sasha" Kenny replied washing his hands

"Honey we should tell him?" Ashley nudged her husband.

"Tell me what?" Kenny asked wiping his palms.

"Sasha would be in town this weekend. I spoke with her father this evening" Jide replied.

"uhm?" Kenny held his breathe.

"Yes o...my niece would be in town this weekend- alive!" Ashley replied.

"Somebody please don't wake me up from this dream." Kenny shut his eyes.

"Wake up jor!" Jide slapped him playfully.

Kenny didn't know whether to laugh or cry, whether to jump or stand, whether to run or roll all over the floor. The news wasn't expected that way, so his very own Sasha would be in town very soon?

"You know what dad? I love you so much!" he hugged his father as tight as he could.

"Hey little man ease up the hug! Don't get soapy all over me" Jide protested amidst laughter.

"ehn...so you won't hug and love me abi?" Ashley asked jealously.

"mum your own love is special..." Kenny gave her the best hug he could offer.

Williams inhaled and exhaled sharply; as he perched on a chair, watching his daughter chatting with Tunji- he could swear that she was a changed person, her smile was so genuine, her eyes glinted as she spoke. But she was delibrately keeping him out her circle, she hardly glanced his way and carefully changed each topic that might involve him. Could it be that she still held a lot of things against him?- he mused. All he got from her was a 'thank you for been there' and a tight hug he wished would last forever.
She laughed as Tunji pulled her cheeks playfully, her collar bones shooting out- she's lost so much weight.
The question doctor Krishna asked him came ringing like a bell in his head.
"was she emotionally abused as a little girl?"

that was not possible cos he made sure all his kids got all they wanted. He treated Sasha as a special child, letting her have her way in all things, in what way did he err?

"Did you hear what this naughty girl said?" Tunji asked catching his attention.

"Its the truth nah! You need to see those images, it was funny." Sasha quickly said.

"What image?" her father asked.

"She said at a point the doctor and the nurses looked like aliens with large ears and all." Tunji laughed.

"Oh" Williams forced a smile, though he didn't find anything funny in their discussion. There was a lot on his mind,-his company; he's spent a lot already on the trips and medical bills, his family- oh yes he's still got Joyce to tackle.

He caught Sasha starring at him, perhaps she was expecting him to laugh or say something; slowly she lowered her eyes her face losing its brightness.
He sighed, what was he to say? He racked his brain.

"I can see you're having a good time with your family" a nurse strolled in carrying a tray.

"I've been expecting you for ages." Sasha looked up happily.

"expecting me or your medications?" the nurse teased, turning to exchange pleasantaries with Williams and Tunji.

"I'd miss you when I leave." Sasha murmured as she downed a glass of water after taking taking drugs of different shapes and sizes.

"I'm missing you already." the nurse smiled taking the glass from her.
"Even still, I'm happy you're strong now." she added searching for something in her pocket.

"Our deal?" Sasha stretched forth her right hand expectantly.

"You know we shouldn't do this." the nurse complianed as she placed a small plastic container whose label was carefully stripped off, in Sasha's outstretched palm.

"Yea...you say that everyday" Sasha rolled her eyes.

"I'll be back with your food." the nurse strolled out of the room.

"Whats that?" Williams asked as Sasha examined the small plastic container.

"Ice-cream." she replied giving him the look that says 'what else does it look like'.

"She bribes me with this each time I take my pills, just so I won't throw up" Sasha smiled at Tunji
"Against the doctors rule," she snapped her fingers.

"Maybe its bad for your health." Tunji frowned.

"Well... I've had it for days now, and I'm still alive." she made a face.

She fumbled with the lid.
"My nails hurt, who'd help open it?"

"Here, let me help you." Williams said rather too quickly. He had to make himself count to her, he loved her.

"Thank you." she collected the open plastic from him, looking surprised.
"Hmmm" she smelt it.
"Uh la la, vanilla...this lady wanna drive me crazy." she smiled dipping her finger into it.

Williams laughed alone, she looked cute. The memories- when she was still below seven, how she'd dance and sing each time she ate. How she poured a large tin of Milk and cocoa on the floor, emptied a bottle of water on it in an attempt to make 'ice-cream', how she ran to him with tears mouthing the words 'daaadddy...my ice-cream did not do...it did not stay one place...'.
Or was it how she danced the day he bought her a live chicken? He had to catch it on tape.

He shook his head slowly, his lips still curved in a smile. What ever severed his relationship with his daughter? She came as a miracle when they least expected, the gap between she and Cassandra could testify to that. She was everybody's favourite, a beauty to behold when her dreads started to form. But things changed before she clocked ten, the little-smiling-cutie disappeared to give way to the always frowning girl, who would snap and snarl at any given instance.

He need to change things again, he wants his pretty daughter back, but first Joyce must be tackled.

Continued...

She had spent the night weeping in fear of what might happen to her.
The next morning she tried to tell her mother once more as she dressed her for school,
"Shut up! Parrot! I need to feed Kola." her mother hushed her thinking she was a noise maker.

Her little innocent mind didn't give up, she told her father as he drove them to school.
"what did you say you swallowed?" her father asked

"Iron." she replied timidly not knowing the name of the object she swallowed.

"Funny girl, how can you swallow a pressing iron?" Her laughed thinking she was hallucinating.

"I swear daddy." she swore.

"don't you ever swear again, okay? If you need ice-cream and chocolates; just say it, stop beating about the bush." her father scolded her.

She wept sore as she didn't know which other way to express the fear that had gripped her heart.
Since then she had lived in a world of frequent stomach pains, she never told anyone for the fear of being scolded. And it has landed her on a hospital bed not in her own country but in another continent.
"Petite ma'am?" Dr Krishna cut into her thoughts, he'd been talking to her.

"I didn't tell my parents." she lied.

Dr Krishna observed her closely, he knew she was hiding alot of things. He felt sorry for the girl, she always turned pale each time her family's discussed.
"Were you ever abused...like emotionally?" he asked holding her eyes.

"No." she shook her head.

"You're not telling me the truth"

"I swear... I..." Sasha started.

"You never swear when telling the truth Miss." Krishna cut in gently.

"I'm not telling lies." Sasha frowned.

"You should tell the truth now, we want to make sure you're sound before leaving the walls of this hospital." He tried again.

Sasha looked away, she'd never trust him. The few people she had loved and given her trust all kicked her into the mud, not again in her life would she try such.

"some things are better left unsaid." she said firmly.

"Okay, I'll leave now." He rose to his feet disappointed, he really wanted to help, he made up his mind to ask her father.

"your father would be here by 5pm...I hope you'd recognise him."
he said gently.

"I hope so." she smiled faintly.

"If you remember anything, anything atall, just call my attention. Remember I'm a friend" He wanted her to trust him.

"Thank you" she gave him a weak smile.
She exhaled sharply as she watched the door close, she wasn't sure she'd like to see her father anytime soon, what if she didn't recognise him? She just hoped her memory won't fail her.

***********

"I'm back...what are you still doing here?"

"You have no right to ask me such question, I'm in my husband's house." Joyce cried.

"You should leave now, he isn't your husband"

"I'm going no where! He is my husband." Joyce cried again.

"No Joyce, you've enjoyed enough, go back to where you belong." the girl replied backing Joyce.

"I belong here, I have a girl child for my husband." Joyce muttered trying to view the face of the speaker.

"That child isn't his, you should save yourself the shame by leaving now." the gril continued.

"No way! Who are you?" Joyce screamed hugging her baby.

"who else if not me? Its Sasha Williams." the girl turned to face her.

Joyce woke up with a start. She ran to the cot where her new baby lay, she picked it up with trembling hands and hugged it tightly like it was her last.
The little one protested the tight hug by releasing an ear piercing cry.

"Shush..." Joyce rocked it gently, her body stil trembling.
Another evil dream? She feared for her child, for her life. Was the dream real or its as a result of ther thoughts?

She knew it, she was losing fast. Her days in the Williams home was numbered.
She feared the shame she would feel if the truth's discovered. That's where her love for material things had landed her, ' a pot of hot shame'. She should have known better and left before thing became this difficult. Her only saving grace would be if Willaims didn't do any test atall, which is like wishing for a blue moon.

She clasped her hands together in prayers, though she knew God would never answer such prayers.

Sasha pushed her last slice of apple into her already filled mouth. Fear clearly written on her face, the macho man with a full beard standing close to her was not helping matters.
It was the 'Main-day', a day to detrmine if she's fit medically after spending close to a week with different doctors asking her questions and the normal routine of fixing some machine wires to her body parts.
Dr Krishna had told her earlier, that her last exercise would determine if she would be allowed to see her family. Her family? She couldn't wait.

"eat up fast." the man jolted her.

"Ye..yes." Sasha kept the bowl she was holding.

The man simply nodded fixing some charts on the wall.
Sasha watched him, her heart beating furiously against her chest, she just hoped she won't say anything that would make Dr Krishna confine her into that room for yet another week.

"Have you seen an elephant before?" the man asked picking up a notebook.

Sasha hesitated, she wanted to be sure.
"Yes."

"Are you sure?"

She nodded.

"Can you point at it?" the man gestured towards the numerous charts on the wall.

Sasha walked weakly from her bed to the charts, she pointed at it, praying she did the right thing.

The man nodded, scribbling down some notes. He looked up only give her a hard stare, Sasha's knees trembled under her weight, what was she going to do to prove to these people that her memory was intact.

"Maybe you shouldn't ask me that, cos I know all the animals in that chart." she tried her best not to stutter.

"Hmm, do you know what your father looks like?"

"My father? That a dumb question!" Sasha sat back on the bed.
"Eerrrm...sorry..I meant to say I do." she quickly apologised as the man gave 'the look'

"Descibe him." the man continued to scribble on his note.

Sasha sighed loudly, the man was truly trying her patience, all those questions just to prove she isn't suffering from memory loss?
"My father...he is tall...he should be dark too..."she paused to make a mental note.
"Maybe if you stop staring at me, I'd be able to answer your questions correctly." she added.

The man nodded looking away.

"Don't you have a name? You don't know how to smile?" she continued.

"My name is Karpov." He replied.

He asked her some more questions, which she either replied politely or she added some sarcasm.

"You didn't ask if I know how to sing?" she asked mockingly as he started to remove the charts.

"Whats your favourite colour?" he asked ignoring her question.

"Green." she quipped.

He stopped moving, he gave her a suprise stare.

"Why the look?"

"Green? Thats quite odd." the man noted picking his books and other things.

Sasha held her breathe.

"Dr Krishna would be here in a jiffy, have a nice day." he walked briskly out of the room.

Sasha remained in her position even after Dr Krishna walked in.

"Hope it went well?" He asked with concern. He had become close to her over the days, she had told him all she could remember about herself, and he had told her all he learnt from her father.

"Do you think I'm odd? Like...my choices are odd?" she blurted out.

"No, why do you ask?"

"That bearded man said its odd for me to love green." she sulked.

"Don't mind that, its just a comment." the doctor assured her.
"so are you gonna tell me now." he sat on chair beside her.

"Tell you what?"

"About the nail, the nail found in your vomit." He spoke in a calm voice, he wanted to know everything.

"I think I swallowed it by mistake." she looked down.

"Did you tell your parents after you swallowed it?"

Sasha stole a glance at him, he wanted to extract the truth from her. She peered at her palms as memories came flooding back.

She was just a liitle girl of five then, she was alone in her new bedroom which was given her; after Cassandra threw her out of the room they both shared.
She developed interest in the silvery metal and pulled it off the wall, she played with it and it ended in her mouth.
She ran to her parents room in tears after she swallowed the nail, her mother sent her out of the room calling her a naughty girl not bothering to listen to her story. With tears she ran to her older siblings but they won't listen to her 'story'

Kemi sat lazily on a stool in the kitchen as the helped herself to the leftover food of the night before. She loved being alone, no husband to attend to, no early morning kitchen work..she could wake up anytime she chose to, do her chores anytime she wished and eat whatever she liked- the truth was she hardly cooked, thanks to her mother's eatery. The only thing she missed about her husband was his presence, his massages and the love he showed her else...

She dropped the empty plate she was eating from, feeling to lazy to walk over to sink to wash her stew stained fingers- she resolved to licking her fingers clean.

"Hmmm, good to be alone." she chuckled to herself as she let out a loud belch.
She remained in the same position for minutes without any effort to get up, she was enjoying the whole 'thing', if Tunji was around he'd be screaming at her to go wash herself or something.

A loud knock nearly made her jump, the babies she was carrying fluttered around.
"cos I'm startled doesn't mean you should jump too." She smacked her bulging tummy
"Who knows maybe your father is back, so you should reserve your movements" she continued rising with difficulty.

"I'm coming already." she shouted as the knockings continued.
She silently prayed it wasn't Tunji, she wouldn't want him kicking into a 'hot bath tub' thereby disrupting her newly found 'freedom'.

"Open the door jor, I'm hungry already." a familiar male voice shouted back in reply.

"Dapo?" she whispered to herself as she unbolted the door.
"the last person I expected to see." she cried as she hugged her brother.

"Iya Ibeji Eka roo, se dada lewa?" Dapo postrated mockingly.

"Postrate properly jare!" Kemi laughed.

"Call Tunji to do that for you." Dapo laughed letting her take his bag.

"Tunji travelled o" she announced.

"I know, I called him." Dapo noted.

"So to what do I owe this early morning visit?"

"To that baby you're carrying." Dapo teased.
"I was given few weeks leave, wanted to go home, but decided to come over here...how about that?"

"so nice and I'm happy o...provided you won't be a pain." Kemi eyed him.

"Pain abi? Okay lemme start going to my fathers house." Dapo frowned.

"Haba nah....I was just joking o." Kemi held his hands.

"So what did you cook?"

"I just ate the leftover eba I had yesternight."

"Oluwa mi! Kemi? You? Left over food?" Dapo gaped at her bewildered.

"Ehn ehn! Blame it on your nieces and nephews." Kemi defended.

"eeyyah...sorry o, hope they are kicking properly?" Dapo teased as he followed his siter to the guest room.

"have you heard from Sasha of recent?" Kemi dropped the question

"Why do you ask about her?" Dapo stopped surprised at the change of topic.

"He phone line aint going through, I need her around before next week." Kemi continued.

"I guess she should be fine."
"ehen sister mi, hope you have enough 'kpomo and shaki' in your stew, cos thats what I feel like eating o" Dapo added tactically changing the subject, the stern warning he got from his father was enough to keep his lips sealed.
Kemi laughed quitely" Oju kokoro"

"that my name" Dapo laughed with her.

"do you have to prove to the world that you are arrogant and s.tupid" Jide screamed at the boy who was fiddling with the TV remote.

"What do you want me to do now?" Kenny asked eyes still fixed on the TV.

"Go back and apologise to them, you need to see the 'sorry' scene you caused over there, your aunt is crying, your mum too." Jide shouted some more.

"Maybe you should lower your voice. I have a headache already" Kenny said in a calm voice.

"don't you know somethings are better left unsaid? Do you have to open their already healing wounds?" Jide continued

"their wounds is even healing? Mine is still fresh and Cassie just poured salt on it"

"Need I remind you that Sasha is Cassie's sister."

"Sasha's my cousin I know, but more of a sister. I needed a sibling to play with cos I'm an only child, and she needed a playmate as her family hated her...and yes we found solace in each other." Kenny replied placing the remote and the centre table.
"The only person I feel sorry for is my own self, cos you all don't care. Even her father who's with her over there is just acting up, so the world won't start shouting that his child died after he impregnated another woman...my opinion though"

"Kenny mind your mouth." Jide scolded.

"I'm sorry dad, lets just face the truth" Kenny concluded picking up the Tv remote once more.

Jide exhaled helplessly.
"Kenny I'd be waiting in the car"

"I'm going nowhere dad." came the reply.

"Ken..."

"Okay...lets go, but i'm not apologising to Cassie o." Kenny pulled a defeated look.

"We shall see about that." Jide replied.

Barbra inserted both littles fingers into her ears to block the noise around her, she needed full concentration and a quite environment to study her Bible; but the loud roars of laughter emanating from God knows where won't let her- she've been repeating a single verse in five minutes. She glanced at the wall clock wearily, it was past five already, she had to break her fast by six.
Without much ado; she stamped out of the room in order to shut the mouth of whoever was laughing.

Barbra charged towards Joyce's room, who else would laugh in that house if not Joyce? She fumed.
Her hand froze on the door knob when she discovered the laughter was coming from the dining section. So Joyce had the guts to bring in guest and serve them food on 'her' own dining table? - she fumed. Her anger slowly faded when she saw the laughing guests. They weren't Joyce's guests but her own kids. Their face wore the excitement she hadn't seen for weeks, when last did her kids smile? That was before Sasha fell ill. They spoke to each other in hushed tones only to laugh when something sounded funny.

"Gross! You won't believe what I have on my list." Cassandra said recovering from her laughter, she held a notebook and a pen.

"we aint even done yet, we're definitely gonna suprise her" Kenny snapped his fingers.

"But we need money for all these." Kola noted going through the list.

"I have not less than twenty thousand naira." Kenny put up his hands.

"thirty thousand" Cassandra put her hands up.

"five thousand" Kola covered his face to the amusement of others.

"We need more money, but I have an idea" Cassandra noted
"Kenny beg your dad for some, I would take some from my daddy's study.."
"I'd explain things to him when he gets back" she quickly added when the rest gave her 'the look'.

"Now I know the thieves in this house." Barbra spoke up.

They turned to face her, startled.

"Pass that book on." Barbra ordered as Kenny tried to hide the notebook.

"we aint thieves o" Kenny said innocently giving her the book.

"Hmmn, so this why you won't let me pray in peace ehn? Aren't you supposed to be praying too?" Barbra scolded flipping the pages.

The children only exchanged looks.

"Bag of rice, a cow...a cake with eighteen steps...A green coloured customized Ipad...a gold plated customized..." Barbra read through the list.
"whats the meaning of this?" she asked looking visibly irritated.

"Cassie, you're the eldest, you should lead these kids in prayers, but no! Here you are listing unimaginable things. Cassie need I remind you that your sister is offshores battling for her life? "

"Mum we're sorry to disturb you..."

"for the last time, what's this rubbish list for?" Barbra snarled.

"Errm..." Cassnadra looked confused.

"we're actually making arrangements for her welcome party." Kenny helped her out.

"her? Who's this 'her' ?" Barbra asked

"Sasha... should incase she comes back alive." he replied making emphasis on 'alive'.

Barbra felt weak, without a word she turned to leave.

"Mum...the book." Kola whined

"You don't need it. Kenny where's your mother?"

"She went out with dad to get fresh bread."

"Good, Cassie take them inside and lead them in prayers." Barbra instructed before going back to her room taking their precious 'list' with her.

"It was your fault," Kenny pointed at Cassandra accusingly.

"Liar! Is it not Kola that was laughing so loud? Are you not the one that gave her the book?" Cassandra defended herself.

"like I have much of choice?" Kenny shot at her.

"oh shut up!" she shot back.

"You aint gonna fight me, you don't got the ability." Kenny warned.

"oh you forgot your other half is off shores, so lets see how you'll cope alone. " the words fell out to quickly. The look on Kenny's face made her regret every bit of it.
"I'm sorry." she whispered.

"I'm leaving." Kenny grabbed his wallet.

"But we're breaking the fast here, your parents..."

"I'm breaking my fast in my father's house." Kenny moved away from her grip.
"You wanna know why that girl is dying?" Kenny paused
"You-her family caused it! She was treated like an outcast, you called her an oddball, a demon...and eiissh. Thanks for using her present state to mock me, sister indeed!" He ran out of the house, slamming the door behind him.

Cassandra lighted the stairs, tears blurring her vision.
"Mummy" she banged the door.

She threw herself at her mother as soon as the door was opened, she wept sore hugging her mother convulsively.

Barbra tried not to stagger under her daughters weight, she led her into the room while listening to Kola who supplied the 'info'

Kemi hissed angrily as she watched her husband pack some clothes into his travelling bag, he paused to look at her briefly before resuming his packing- a gesture which hyped her anger.

"I said you aint going nowhere, you heard me right?"

He sighed heavily shaking his head, another night of trouble awaits him.

"You better postpone this journey till I put to bed o" She warned again.

"Baby...c'mon, I thought we've talked this over. I'm not going on a fancy trip; its an order from the top, we've got a new branch in India and I'm going there for some business purposes." Tunji explained crediting himself for the truthful lies.

"Maybe you should change another lie." Kemi eyed him.

"You don't believe me? " Tunji asked looking offended.

"Tunji, I can't forget you work in a bank, well banks sends their staffs on trips accepted. The bank you work in is owned by a Nigerian, how comes he opened a branch in India?" Kemi interrogated.

"C'mon we live a world full of business, India's economy is booming at its peak" Tunji tried again, praying she won't ask more question cos he might end up telling her he was going to see her sick sister- an action the Williams family won't forgive him for.

"So when did bankers start putting on native attires?" she asked pointing at the clothes he was packing.

"babes you forget I'm a Nigerian, I have to represent my country. Those coming from scotland would put on kilts." he managed another lie.

"Hmm, Maybe you should pack all your agbada and caps with an ox-tail to match." Kemi suggested, Tunji frowned trying his best to laugh.
"Whats that look for?" Kemi quizzed

"I never knew we had trust issues." Tunji stated with all seriousness.

"Meaning?"

"Meaning you don't trust me! All these questions just cos I'm about to embark on a journey? What are you even insinuating?" he looked highly offended

"Honey...its not like that..."

"What not like that? The other day you were going through my phone and now this?" Tunji continued

"Oh Tunji stop it! I never questioned your fidelity, its just that..." Kemi rose to meet him.

"Just that you don't trust me." Tunji backed her, it was his turn to be pampered.

"Please Oko mi...don't take it that far, I'm sorry " Kemi pleaded burying her face in his back.

Tunji turned to face her, his face lit with smile as he hugged her. Nothing is so easy to manipulate a the heart of a woman.

"Forgiven?" Kemi searched his eyes.

"Uhm.." he kissed her.
He just wished his journey won't be in vain, Sasha must live.

Micheal continued to press the the bell, even after he heard shuffling feets.
"Stop nah! You want to kill their battery?" his mother chided.

"Who's that?" Joyce asked turning the keys.
"Yes?" she asked irritated. The thought of Williams not calling her about the baby was making her hate everybody around, imagine? She depends on Barbra for even food to eat. These two strangers standing before might end up tasting a piece of her anger.

"Please is Mrs Williams in?" Ugo asked, trying her best to sound polite.
"we'd like to see her."

"I'm Mrs Williams too, how may I help you?" Joyce asked.

Ugo exchanged glances with her son, were they in the right house? Micheal summed Joyce up in a look
"You must be Joyce." He noted, Sasha told him all about her.
"Please can we see the real Mrs Williams, not the Mistress."

Joyce was about to slam the door when she heard Barbra voice behind them.
"Joyce who are those?"
"Wow...we've got Royalty in the house today." Barbra beamed as she sighted Ugo.

"I've asking about you from this woman, and she've been talking nonsense, is she your househelp?" Ugo asked gesturing to Joyce was already heading to her room.

A shadow passed acros Babra's face,
"Please come in, this is your son?" she patted Micheal who murmured some greetings.

"My sister, I heard all that happened o, my husband just told me about your daughter yesterday" Ugo started immediately she sat down, she and Barbra had met countless time courtesy their husbands, just that Barbra was keeping her distance, else they should be close friends.
"So how's she now, any news?"

"we're still praying." Barbra replied quitely.

"We wish her quick recovery ma" Micheal spoke up.

"Amen, what do I offer you..."

"No, we're just fine." Ugo said quickly before adding
"that woman that just went in, is she the one that's pregnant for your husband?"

"How comes she's still here? You Yorubas are too soft, can't your children deal with her?" Ugo continued in hushed tones

"ah ahn! Mrs Amaechi, nawa for you o! Let me get you something to drink." Barbra laughed tactically changing the subject.

"Mr Williams, I must tell you; I've never seen such all my life." Dr Krishna said rubbing his palms together.

"That just an act of God." Williams beamed looking all fresh and relaxed.

"God? How come I don't know this God?" Dr Krishna cocked an eyebrow.

"This God I'm talking about is the creator of the universe, He made man and gave us life, He alone can give life no other god can. He is Jehovah Rapha- God our healer,"

"Hmm, I'm not convinced." Dr Krishna shook his head. As far as he was concerned, life is as a result of evolution.

"You confirmed her dead isn't it? How comes she now lives if not for God? Have a deep rethink Doctor, I'd be so glad to lead you to the onlyTrue God." Willams rose to his feet, a genuine smile plastered on his face.

"I need to go see her, hope I'm allowed?"

"Yes...but just a minute...I need to show you something." Dr Krishna picked up a jar from his desk.
"We discovered, that a lump of clotted blood; half the size of a man's fist, was blocking her air passage-a little wonder she had difficulty breathing." he paused opening the jar.
"I told you she threw up this morning after she was fed milk right? We found this in her vomit" he pointed at a rusted nail,

"it's rusting caused severe injuries on her stomach walls, leading to a secretion which almost damaged her Kidney." he concluded observing Williams face.

"So you mean all this came out of my daughter."

The doctor simply nodded.
"You can go see her now...just that she won't talk to you yet, even her vision would be distorted-her hearing ability too...you know, her brain needs some recollection to do." He loosened his tie taking a deep breathe- it wasn't easy using plain words to describe Medical terminologies.

"Thank you." williams was already at the door, the joy of seeing his child alive was enough to make him jump 10000 ft into the sky.

::::::::::::::
Sasha opened her eyes lazily when she felt something squeeze her fingers, she prayed it wasn't those aliens coming to force something down her throat. She stared intently at the distorted figure standing by her side, another monster? When would she start start seeing human beings? All she keep seeing was aliens with large ears- this particular one was having large ears and a mouth the size of a sauce pan, with some bluish body.
Where on earth was she? Where is her family?
Slowly she shut her eyes as it was beginning to get strained.
She soon heard a female voice, -that whitish alien that always came to rub some cold substance on her body- she groaned inwardly.

"For how long is she going to be like this?" a familiar baritone voice boomed.

"from the report we took yesterday, she should be able to speak and recognise things in the next 18hrs" the whitish alien replied.
"Mr Williams she's as good as fine"

Mr Williams?- Sasha opened her eyes almost immediately. So Mr Williams was the bluish alien? What happened to everybody? She pursed her lips- she couldn't move her tongue to speak, each time she tried she ended making a bubbling sound or a baaa sound.

"Its like she's trying to recognise me, she's been staring." Williams noted.

"Yea she does that." the nurse replied.

Sasha rolled her eyes, what were those aliens taking her for? A slowpoke or what? Simply cos she felt weak all over her body or couldn't voice out her mind?
She wished her tongue would move so she would tell them how their ears looked like window panes, their eyes like plastic dishes , their nose like baggy jeans and their mouths like canoes.

The corner of her lips curved into a smile as she continued to stare intently at them, those cartoons characters or aliens looked funny.

"Look, nurse she's smiling?" Williams said excited.

"she does that almost everytime, it make me wonder what she's thinking or seeing." the nurse replied.

Sasha rolled her eyes again, her eyebrows knitted into a frown, can't she smile again? What kind of planet was she?

"Mr Williams, if you would excuse us, I need to clean her up." the nurse said politely.

"Okay...love you sweetheart" Williams kissed Sasha's forehead before heading out of the room.

What was that bluish alien thinking? Loving her? No! She aint an alien, he should go love his fellow aliens- Sasha tried to voice it out, instead of words a bubbling sound escaped her throat.

"that bubbling sound again?" the nurse smiled.
"Come over pretty girl, you need to wash up" The nurse reached for her.

Sasha's frown deepened, that whitish alien should leave her alone.

"that frown isn't for me? Is it?"
the nurse giggled softly squeezing water from a towel.

Sasha shut her eyes as she felt something wet rub her body.

Joyce forced a smile to cover-up her teary eyes as Barbra walked into the room alongside Ashley carrying a basket-full of food and fruits.

"Congrats" Barbra beamed.

"Thank you, God bless you" came the weak reply.

"awww....so cute, so this is the baby that nearly made you go through knives? Stubborn pretty girl." Barbra joked picking up Joyce's baby from the bed.

"Aburo? Isn't she cute? Who does she look like?" Barba nudged her sister who looked bored already.

"Her mother nao!" Ashley snapped. She felt like snatching that baby from her sister, throw it into the air to die there, then throw punches at her sister till she starts behaving normal. Her anger was kindled when she learnt earlier from Cassandra, that her sister was the one paying the hospital bills and all, which 'normal woman' would do that?

"Thank you for everything, God bless you." Joyce said in a voice close to whisper. The woman before her was indeed an angel, she still showed her love and care after all she made her go through. That woman does not deserve what she went through. For the first time, she regretted all her actions. But that isn't her delima, her main concern is how her child turned out to be a girl- plan number one failed, what if Williams come back from his so-called business trip and decides to do a test? The child definitely isn't his, and he sends her packing?- plan number two failing, or what if John refuses to accept her and her child? That would be a disaster.

"when are they letting you go?" Barbra's excited voice startled her.

"This evening."

"Wow, so we came on time then, its past four already."

Joyce's heart missed multiple beats. Going back to that house was a dreaded motive, having Sasha and Cassandra taunt her continuously for giving birth to a female child wasn't a good idea. The look of triumph plastered on Sasha's face when she'd be sent out of the house was not imaginable. Only God could see her through- she thought.

:::::::::::::::::::
All the medical team in the room turned to look at Williams as he strolled into the room on shaky legs, they had sent for him to come have a last glance of his daughter before they take her away.

"I'm...we're very sorry Mr Williams." Dr Krishna spoke up.

"Okay."Williams whispered his eyes on the doctor that was busy on his daughter. He took a position close to Sasha's head, her face was pale and her lips pursed. Her dark long dreads looked neat and set, her face still held that subborn look of a rebellious child who had no respect for anybody except her Creator. Slowly he wiped the tears stealing down his cheeks.

"she doesn't need them anylonger, take 'em off." He mumbled, he was referring to the tubes and wires going in and out her body.

"I was about to do that when you came in." Dr Krishna replied as he started to take off the equipments.

"Doc, but you gave me your word." Williams said accusingly.

"But I said I was not sure." the doctor paused, how was he going to convince this man who knew nothing at all about Medical terms?

"It was all your fault, how professional does it sound that the oxgen tank fell out of place?" Williams snarled, he really felt like giving the Indian a complete 'red head'.

"Nehi,- no, it wasn't..." Dr Krishna stopped talking when they heard a machine beep.
"What was that?"

The beeping sound came louder and faster indicating abnormality, Dr Krishna darted to the machine fixed to Sasha's chest. His eyes popped out when he saw the indication that her heart was beating faster than normal with an approximation of 250 beats per minute.
He turned to glance at his Medical team, each face had turned red; he felt something push his hand off, next he saw her struggling weakly-mouth opened gasping for breathe, one hand holding her chest tightly- the whole team rushed to her.

"Oxygen." he cried rushing to grab the tube almost colliding into another doctor trying to get at the same time.

Soon they were fixing it to her face, but her free hand yanked it off, she was still gasping for breathe. It turned into a battle of the strongest as they struggled with the gasping child, for seconds that seemed like hours, they were able to fix it on.
All the Medical team including Williams were thrown into panic as they watched the machine indicate her heart beat was reducing drastically, they all let out a sigh in unision as the indication read 'Heart beat- Normal'.

Williams gazed at his daughter's face, it was no longer white- he could see life flowing back into her entire being, the drama that just played before his eyes was indeed a Miracle.
"What is a Miracle?" He muttered.

"A Miracle is your daughter is going to live Mr Williams" Dr Krishna smiled patting his back as he led Williams out of the room to enable the Team do their job.

" ...Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; ..." Barbra fought back tears as she read her Bible aloud. If only God would look at her trouble and save her and her family.
Kneeling by her bed side, she prayed silently. All she needed from God was forgiveness, if He could forgive her then she was sure her daughter would live.

"...thank you Father, thank you Jesus, and thank you Holy spirit. I believe my prayers are answered. Amen." she sniffed wiping her tears.

Her heart raced as she heard her phone ring, who could it be? Maybe her husband called to tell her Sasha's 'gone'. God forbid- She muttered picking up her phone.
The caller Id only increased her heart beat, Kemi? She mused. Did Tunji make the mistake of telling her about Sasha.

"Hello? Kemi?" she cleared her throat.

"Mummy, ekasan." Kemi greeted.

"Bawo? How's my grandchild?"

"I'm fine, your grandchild is kicking." Kemi cackled.

"That's good."

"your voice is so low, what's wrong?" Kemi noticed

"Nothing at all, I was praying when you called." Barbra cleared her throat once more.

"Okay o, hope its not Sasha o, how is she ma sef? Naughty girl." Kemi laughed.

"Oh Sasha? She's very very fine." Barbra said quickly.

"This one you're saying 'very fine', I just hope she aint dishing out trouble ehn? Meanwhile how's Joyce?"

"Joyce?" Barbra echoed.
"She might undergo a C-section this evening, she've been into labour for days and you know what that means."

"Hmm, what has dad got to say?"

"Your father travelled nao" Barbra replied giving herself away.

"to where?"

"Er...just some business trip...you know." Barbra stammered.

"Okay, mummy its like I'm gonna have twins o, the doctor said so. Mum you won't believe it, Tunji jokingly named them Sasha and Kenny if its a boy and a girl or Sasha and Kemi if they're both girls o. That shows the battalion of troublesome grandkids you should be expecting o." Kemi rattled on.

Barbra felt a lump rise in her throat at the mention of Sasha.

"Mum, are you there?"

"Kemi can we talk later, please, I promise to call you back." Barbra manage to say, ending the call she let the sob escape her throat.

***********
Williams trembled like a dried leaf blown by the harmattan wind, as some nurses wheeled Sasha past him in a stretcher; he was having breakfast at the hotel when he received the call that something went wrong with his daughter, and here he was shaking as his lifeless daughter was wheeled into a room.

"Dr Krishna!" he called out, as he saw Sasha's doctor among a team of doctors hurrying after the nurses.

"Mr Williams, thank God you're here." the doctor wore a grim look .

"I hope all is well?" Williams quivered.

"The oxygen tank fell out of place,.. Her heart's at the point of not pumping out blood atall when the nurses got there this morning, there wasn't enough oxgen in her system...as you can see Mr. Williams...I'm not sure." Doctor Krishna summarized folding up his lab coat.

"so?"

"There are no chances at all, Mr. Williams I would suggest you let go."

"What?!" Williams cried

"we would still try our best." the doctor hurried on.

Williams slumped into the waiting chair beside him, he was too exhausted to speak- all his energy drained by the news.
Why should he go through all that? He'd promised his wife that he'd go back to Nigeria with Sasha- alive, now the news is trying to be different.
This wasn't the kind of life he planned, living a life to bury your own children? Was God punishing him for cheating on his wife and impregnating another woman?
If God wanted to punish him, his kids shouldn't partake in it, they're not present when he went so low to commit adultery.

Sasha was a special kid, different from all her siblings. The only child who would never ask for anything from you, except you give her yourself. The child that started to act independent before she clocked ten...

"Mr Williams please?" A nurse stood before him, peering at a paper she was holding.

"yes?" his voice was just a mere whisper.

"could you please come with me, there are some papers you need to sign, thank you."

"Okay," Williams struggled to his feet, his stomach tied in a knot. Papers? He mused, he prayed its just ordinary papers.

Kemi stirred in her sleep, she just wouldn't wake up; the baby in her womb was busy throwing 'tantrums' -kicking and moving leisurely in its own world. She definitely won't give the stubborn baby the joy of giving her sleepless nights, slapping her abdomen softly she settled back to sleep. On a normal night, the child would stop moving, but this time around its momentum soared.

"stubborn thing." she hissed slapping her bulging tummy again.
"Honey?" she searched the bed with her hands.
"your baby is disturbing again o." she complained sleepily.

No reply. She stopped searching with her hands and sat up, her husband was no where around the room.
Where on earth is this man? - she mused getting off bed.

"Tunji!" she called out sharply putting on her bedroom slippers.

"Hey baby, whats up." Tunji walked into the room

"The ceiling! Where did you go to?"

"I was kinda hungry, so I went to the kitchen to grab a bite." Tunji explained.

"grabbing a bite? And the thing you put in my womb is bent on giving me sleepless nights." she continued to rant.

"awww...sorry..." he laughed keeping his phone on the dresser.

"when did you start taking your phone with you to the kitchen? Or it was grabbing a bite too?" Kemi asked with sarcasm.

"Nothing really." a shadow of guilt passed across his face.

Kemi stared at him doubtfully, her hand reached for his phone, but he took it from her.
"Tunji lemme have that phone."

"Its not yours."

"Tunji, I won't repeat myself."

"c'mon, what do you want my phone for?"
"see what you wanna see." he pushed the phone into her hands.

She scrolled through his text messages, then to his call log.

"well so? Did you happen to find anything?" Tunji teased.

"No.." Kemi started to smile but her smile was a shortlived one.

"Cassie? What are you discussing with Cassie by this time of the night?" she asked.
"You guys even talked for almost an hour?" she faced him squarely.

"Nothing really much, just chatting...you know its been long I saw my sister in-law." Tunji winked.

"But its still an ungodly time." Kemi stated-unsatisfied.

"Okay sorry...ema binu."

"which reminds me, its been long I spoke to Sasha, mum didn't mention her when we spoke this morning, did Cassie say anything about her?" Kemi asked walking back to bed.

"Yea, she's very fine. She's still savouring the Port." He smiled, though he knew it was far from the truth.

Kemi cackled "missing her, Can't wait to have her back here."

"Not after I give you some massage." Tunji grinned, pushing her gently to a lying position, his hands proceeded to work on her waist.

***********
Kenny fixed his gaze on the sky from his hotel room; it was beautifully garnished with stars of different sizes, one was bigger than the rest- shining proudly as if to tell the others 'you aint my level'. He pressed his head against the window pane as soft breeze caressed his face- thinking about the events of the day before.

The doctor had said 'its just a reflex action.'

"Reflex action? Now c'mon doc, she tapped her fingers! You call that reflex?" he had cried with unbelief.

"my boy, its reflex okay?" Doctor Krishna patted his head before proceeding to refix some tubes on Sasha.

Kenny sighed heavily, shifting from one feet to the other; he was filled with joy and great expectation, but the doctor soiled it all with the word 'reflex'.
He tapped his own fingers on the window panes.
"Now this aint reflex, I did it intentionally." he mused to himself.

A car zoomed past, catching his attention, some cars too were moving on the tarred road.

"oh my! Don't tell me its day break." he turned to the wall clock.
"my my!" he exclaimed when he saw the wall clock read 4:30am.

"I didn't sleep today again." he hissed, returning his gaze to the sky. The smaller stars had disappeared, only the large one was still blinking dimly.

"Come-in." he muttered as he heard a soft knock on the door.

"Ken, you aren't ready yet?" Jide strolled into the room.
Kenny rolled his eyes.

"Ken, we've got a flight to catch by 5:30, we've got to see Sasha before leaving."

"Daddy, I don't wanna go back home without Sasha, lemme stay till she's fine, please." Kenny tried again, he'd been pleading with his father not to take him back to Nigeria all in vain.

"Kenny! Get ready now."

"But dad..."

"Kenny!"

"Okay then." Kenny frowned pulling himself from the window.

"I wish I have my own money, I won't have you bossing me around cos you paid for my ticket and lodge." Kenny grumbled to the bathroom.

Jide shook his head, he wasn't happy leaving too, but work demands, there are issues he needed to help Williams settle at his company. No choice at all.
