Politics › Prez. Buhari’s #73 Famous Quotes/words Of Wisdom As He Celebrates 73rd Birthday by bumi10(op): 7:58am On Dec 17, 2015
Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari clocks 73 today and Following the intense presidential campaign and the victory in the March 28 presidential poll, Muhammadu Buhari’s year was rich in events, speeches, meetings and trips. Lets take a looks at his memorable and most famous quotes.

On corruption and economy

1. We will stop corruption and make the ordinary people, the weak and the vulnerable our top priority.

2. Any war waged on corruption should not be misconstrued as settling old scores or a witch-hunt. I’m running for president to lead Nigeria to prosperity and not adversity.

3. Corruption will have no place and the corrupt will not be appointed into my administration.

4. This generation of Nigerians, and, indeed the future generation, have no country other than Nigeria; we shall stay and salvage it together!

5. We cannot build an economy where corruption is the working capital.

6. We will be a compassionate government, for out of compassion arises the truest forms of wealth and progress a society can attain.

7. No longer shall illegal flows of massive sums leave these shores to finance other economies. While our people languish in poverty, we effectively give financial aid to nations that is not justified. I am sick of this. It must stop. The money saved will finance jobs, health care and the provision of social safety net for the needy, weak and vulnerable of our land.

8. We shall strongly battle another form of evil that is even worse than terrorism – the evil of corruption.

9. We shall send corrupt politicians to Kirikiri.

10. I will stabilise global oil price.

On Boko Haram and insecurity

11. Boko Haram is a mindless, godless group who are as far away from Islam as one can think of.

12. Progress has been made in recent weeks by our security forces, but victory cannot be achieved by basing the command and control centre in Abuja. The command centre will be relocated to Maiduguri and remain until Boko Haram is completely subdued.

13. But we cannot claim to have defeated Boko Haram without rescuing the Chibok girls and all other innocent persons held hostage by insurgents.

14. Boko Haram is a typical example of small fires causing large fires. An eccentric and unorthodox preacher with a tiny following was given posthumous fame and following by his extra judicial murder at the hands of the police.

15. They have to prove to us that the girls are alive, they are well, and then we can promise we can negotiate. We will negotiate if we certify that the girls are alive.

16. For now the armed forces will be fully charged with prosecuting the fight against Boko Haram. We shall overhaul the rules of engagement to avoid human rights violations in operations.

17. There are many reasons why vulnerable young people join militant groups, but among them are poverty and ignorance. Indeed Boko Haram – which translates in English, roughly, as ‘Western Education Is Sinful’ – preys on the perverted belief that the opportunities that education brings are sinful.

18. The misappropriation of resources provided by the government for weapons means the Nigerian military is unable to beat Boko Haram.

19. Stop killing our people.

20. If you are starving and young and in search of answers as to why your life is so difficult, fundamentalism can be alluring. We know this for a fact because former members of Boko Haram have admitted it: they offer impressionable young people money and the promise of food, while the group’s mentors twist their minds with fanaticism.

21. You shall be able to go to bed knowing you are safe… Insurgents would soon know the strength of the collective will of Nigerians.

22. We are going to erect and maintain an efficient, disciplined people – friendly and well-compensated security forces within an over – all security architecture.

23. We stand united in our pledge to resist terror in Nigeria – not just through military means but also through the power of opportunity and the hope of a better future for all.

On religion

24. I will continue to show openly and inside me the total commitment to the Sharia movement that is sweeping all over Nigeria… God willing, we will not stop the agitation for the total implementation of the Sharia in the country. (Note: the call was made in August 2001 and, apparently, concerned only areas where Muslims predominated).

25. Religion is a personal affair. If you want to visit Mecca or Jerusalem do it with your personal funds. Sponsorship of religious pilgrimages is illegal, unconstitutional and lack of fairness.

26. Because they can’t attack our record, they accuse me falsely of ethnic jingoes; they accuse me falsely of religious fundamentalism. Because they cannot attack our record, they accuse us falsely of calling for election violence – when we have only insisted on peace. Even as Head of State, we never imposed Sharia.

27. I urge Nigerians to put aside religion, politics and all other divisions to crush the insurgency.

28. Religion must never be used as an excuse to divide us, oppress others or gain unfair advantage.

On the former government

29. Whatever one’s views are, Nigerians must thank former President Jonathan for not digging-in in the face of defeat and thereby saving the country untold consequences.

30. I would like to thank President Goodluck Jonathan for his display of statesmanship in setting a precedent for us that has now made our people proud to be Nigerians wherever they are.

31. President Jonathan has nothing to fear of me; we might not agree on the same methodology of governance… He is a great Nigerian leader, who made it possible for democracy to thrive. I will extend my hands of fellowship to Jonathan and his team.

On elections

32. This campaign is the third and last one for me. I will not offer myself again for election into the office of president. (Note: the promise was made before the 2011 presidential election).

33. It is up to the people. If you choose correct leadership, there won’t be any need for the military regime. The opposition has united this time to back one candidate to challenge the PDP in the presidential poll. The military came in when it was absolutely necessary and the elected people had failed the country.

34. There shall no more be a ruling party; All Progressive Congress (APC), will now be your governing party.

35. You are all my people; I will treat you all as mine. I will work for those who voted for me, voted against me and those who didn’t vote at all.

36. If what happened in 2011 (alleged rigging) should again happen in 2015, by the grace of God, the dog and the baboon would all be soaked in blood.’

On the military past:

37. I cannot change the past. But I can change the present and the future.

38. I have heard and read references to me as a ‘former dictator’… I take responsibility for anything that happened under my watch.

39. I bear no ill will against anyone on past events. Nobody should fear anything from me. We are not after anyone. People should only fear the consequences of their actions.

40. A few people have privately voiced fears that on coming back to office I shall go after them. These fears are groundless. There will be no paying off old scores. The past is prologue.

41. Let us put the recent past behind us and forget our old battles.

42. The phased end of the USSR was a turning point for me. It convinced me that change can be brought about without firing a single shot.

Politics › There’s Nothing Indivisible About Nigeria – By Agbakoba by bumi10(op): 7:16am On Dec 17, 2015
By Bartholomew Madukwe & Ikenna Asomba

Dr. Olisa Agbakoba (SAN) is a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA. Agbakoba co-founded the Civil Liberty Organisation, CLO, in Nigeria and founded Human Rights Law Services. In this interview, he spoke on the state of the nation, communication importance in government, President Muhammadu Buhari’s economy policies and others.

Excerpt:

We have seen at least 195 days of General Muhammadu Buhari as President of Nigeria, what is your view on the state of the nation? Well, it is good when you listen to perception; know what people think because action of government is to reflect what people want. When I was NBA President, I always do what I call sweeping. I will make sweeping calls to about 10 Chair persons to know what lawyers are thinking.

Perception is very important. It is for the President to pay more attention to the way people feel and that is why we need a communication strategy, such as having a Director of Communication. You find different people say different things about the President. Some say that he does not know what he is doing and some say he is too slow. But my interest in the President is not as General Buhari as a president because I have not met him, I do not know what he does. The country is suffering what I call economic anaemia. There is no money in the system because a lot of parameters are not working. There is no investment law, competition law, which is why MTN can do what it likes.

Does this suggest that in 2016, communication should be one of the key things for effecting the change President Buhari intends to deliver to Nigerians? I hope that the present administration will understand that in 2016, communicating their strategy should be of prime importance so as to dispel all doubts. Also, the Biafra thing is what a good communication strategist will communicate. I think this administration has not done well in communication. In abroad, what attracts people is the programme. If I look at your programme and I am able to compare, then I can make my choice.

If you look at the Presidential Debate in the US, you will be able to make your choice. But in Nigerian politics, it is a personal thing. You will need to know the person and touch him. In the US, for example, you do not need to know anybody; he will appeal to you by what he does. So President Buhari’s programme, quite surprisingly, appears to me as something to be looked at.

Which means that President Buhari’s programme would succeed since people like you are impressed by it?

I am keen to see that it succeeds. Everybody wants to have a break. If he (President Buhari) is going to take us there, then we will support it. I am tired of being able to handle money but unable to spend it because one is not happy. You need to have a country where you feel safe. You know I come from Apapa in Lagos and you know what happens there? You think I like it that I have towalk one mile to the office, in a place that is Nigeria’s richest community? We need to have a good country. And like I said earlier on, the President need to pay more attention to the way people feel and that is why we need this communication strategy.

But some people have misconceived you, saying there is something you are looking for from this administration?

For those who know me for a long time, they know that I do not need to look for anything. I had a chance to be Abacha’s Attorney-General at age 34 or 35, that was quite tempting and not what I was looking for. I am just looking for a good Nigeria. Many Nigerians seem not to understand President Buhari’s economic policies. Looking at your good sense of economy, can you share what you know about it?

The nature of person’s ideology changes with where he is. So the natures of what countries do depend on where they are at any time. Basically, Nigeria as an emerging economy is a very poor country, typified by the fact that we are in the primmest land yet I have no water. Anyone who wants to design a programme for a poor country will take into account what the people want and what their need is. There is no template.

A group better known as the Washington Consensus came together and felt that in the context of the war between the west and east, that imposing democracy and imposing the western economy thought will keep the sovereignty away. If you understand it and do not believe it, that is too bad. But for us who are international political economist, I know that the biggest challenge we face is the west and the east, the conflict that they have had and how it has affected us.

Crime › Deadly Clash Between Farmers & Fulani Herdsmen In Benue Leaves Six Killed by bumi10(op): 11:08am On Dec 08, 2015
The clash which took place on Sunday, December 6, has caused many of the residents to flee from the area. Eyewitness say the chaos erupted in the community after the locals mobilised themselves and besieged a Fulani settlement in the area. The essence of the mobilisation was to stop a large herd of cattle and herdsmen from gaining access into the village, said a witness.

“The herdsmen and the cattle were moving into the village in large numbers to seek better pasture, but feeling threatened by the presence of the herdsmen, the villagers put up a blockade and asked their visitors to return to where they were coming from. “There was resistance and a crisis ensued that snowballed into a clash that left three villagers killed and several person injured with some others unaccounted for,” the unnamed witness told This Day.

Adding : “It was when the villagers discovered that two of their youths were killed and another that was earlier declared missing was also found to have been killed by the intruders, that they launched a reprisal on the Herdsmen, killing and beheading three of them. “As we speak, the Herdsmen are deserting the community while the farmers are also fleeing their villages, though security has been beefed up in the area.”

However, when the police was contacted, spokesman for the force, Moses Yamu, said he was yet to be briefed on the matter. Meanwhile, recent attacks by Fulani herdsmen has caused certain communities to take precautionary measures to ensure that the herdsmen are barred from entering their territories.

OLEH—SUSPECTED Fulani herdsmen, weekend, kidnapped three building contractors at Amorji, a suburb Onicha-Ukwani community, Ndokwa West Local Government Area, Delta State.
Though the names of those kidnapped could not be ascertained at press time, Vanguard gathered that they were abducted while working at a fenced site in the community.

He said: “For some time now, these herdsmen have occupied almost all the communities in Onicha-Ukwani, particularly Amorji and driven the people out of the village.

“My people are seriously hungry because there is no food for them to eat, the easy access road to Kwale had been taken over by Fulani herdsmen. The worst part of it all is that they went ahead and brought their families to be feeding from the communities’ crops they invaded.”
