My visa interview transcript

Visa: Approved
Location: Seoul, South Korea
Name of School: Missouri University of Science and Technology
Funding: Fully funded
Interview date: December 12, 2022

Visa appointment was by 8:15 am. I arrived at 7:50.
After the biometrics, I was directed to join the queue for interview by a male VO.

VO: When did you finish your masters?
Me: February 2021

VO: What major will you study for your PhD?
Me: (I told him)

VO: Your PhD program is funded , right?
Me: Yes, I got a fully-funded PhD offer

VO: What will you do after your PhD?
Me: In the short term, I'd like to apply for post-doctoral position to reinforce my research experience. In the long term, I will return to my home country to work as.... (VO cuts in).

VO: That's okay, I will be approving your visa sir.  You will receive your passport in few days.

Interview finished in approximately 1 minute. I picked up my visa after 2 business days.

Glory be to God!

Hi bro.
Congratulations on your visa approval.
Is this program for Spring Or Fall 2023?
Did you have to contact any faculty professor or member before or after applying?
I ask because I intend to apply to them soon.
Your response and advice would really help me take the best step.
Thanks.

LoL. Paying for app fee for program is a lot. Except you don't have app fee waiver, then you can pay.
There are ways to get waiver;
- contact the graduate coordinator of your department. You don't have to tell him you Don't earn enough in your country to pay. Something as simple as "I write to know if the department often provide app fee waiver for prospective graduate applications" will do. They'll tell you if they can help you pay because it's the graduate schools that request for these fees. And some department often set budgets apart to pay these fees on behalf of people who can't pay.

If the department say they don't have such budget, contact the graduate school. They'll direct you to register for their graduate open house or some virtual meeting like that. Once you attend on the said date, they'll waive it. And if they can't waive, then you can pay if you're sure you have necessary credentials to give yourself a chance

Also, if you're a first class graduate. You can apply to the OFP program in Nigeria. I don't know if anyone knows this. OFP helps you till you get to the US. They pay your GRE, TOEFL, PASSPORT, app fee, flight ticket and all that...

Thanks once again bro.
The guidelines you have provided will help me immensely should I require to apply again for fall 2024. However, I am hoping on hope for a miracle cus I know I did everything accurately and got a confirmation from one of the graduate coordinator who told me I have a strong application especially with an absolute distinction in Biomedical science (UK). But he is still not the one to decide on who gets accepted or not so... fingers crossed. If e no enter, we try again bro.

PhD isn't as competitive as masters, in term of getting funded and scholarship, Msc is the most difficult.

Also, avoid schools that make it compulsory to select a"would -be " PI before they can review your app. It's an okay thing to do contact a professor but that's a long route as most of them won't even respond their email. PhD programs do lab rotation and you're expected to attend a seminar class in your First year where faculty members will present their research and lab every week. This will guide you to choose a PI. Having a PI take you in with his funding is cool, but I will mostly advise people to apply to schools first for the majority of their applications. Although, talking to a professor will help you, if he replies anyways

I must admit you are very good evening with inspiring people to push for the best.
I appreciate your honest contributions and responses. This response has been my exact experience. The only problem I have is that I applied to 3 schools only. I should have done more but I was considering my pocket due to the application fees.
Thanks

If you're looking for an ivy league kind of school, Cornell has a robust and beautiful biomed program (PhD). However, if you want to have like a 90% chance of being admitted quickly, R1 universities are your bet. R1 universities are second to ivy league and there are only just eight ivy league in the US.

Texas tech university is good and they offer admit to lot of Nigerians. I remembered they once admit me for spring but didn't go. Fall admit for their PhD biomed is still much available.

Check them out here

I understand how you feel but if I was a VO, I would definitely reject your visa application. How old are you? When did you graduate secondary school? Do you have any study gaps? Can you explain them? Why are you just going to school now? Why a community college and not a university? Why would you spend so much to attend a lowly ranked community college that no one wants to go to when you can attend the best universities in Nigeria at a fraction of the cost?

Your entire application screams “ desperate “ and “intending immigrant that doesn’t want to attend school but needs a loop hole to enter the US”. I would argue, that you’re aren’t a genuine student.

Ok bro.
I appreciate your input.
Thanks a lot.

If you're thinking about Fall 23,you should be deciding on how to package your application by now. Most schools decide on Fall admission by February, some in January and some have even decided. If you're considering Fall 23,try and send your application before January so you can have chance to get scholarships or funding. But if your transcript isn't ready at this time, consider spring application. Most schools that admit for spring open application around May/June/July.

If by statement of results, you mean the equivalent of a certificate? No you can't use that. You need transcript that detailed your course by courses modules and their ascribed grades. US schools doesn't even need certificate. Transcript is very very important.

In case you want schools that admit for spring, I might be able to offer help on that for people in STEM but just not for your kind of degree

Hi bro,
This is a wonderful response. Please, for someone who is interested in studying Biomedical science or a related discipline (PhD), what schools can you recommend for spring admissions. The Person has a masters degree in Biomed with a distinction from a university in the UK and currently resident there.

One last question please
For all the applications you made (PhD), did you have to contact a faculty member to get their initial consent?
This would help me prepare better next time please.
Thanks again

One of my applications is for a PhD program and I emailed the profs before applying, because it was advised on the school's website. However, up until now, no response from those people and the school will not let me rest from constantly bombarding me with emails about deadline and how all their profs have plenty extramural fundings. Of course, they want my application fee, I know. I asked an alumni and she told me to email profs like I'd done, but if they don't answer me, I should still go ahead to apply because some of her friends succeeded that way. So I have done so...Whether it will bring out anything meaningful, me and her can't tell for sure, but I have sha applied to three other schools for masters, jejely.

That's a good move my friend. One thing I am certain of is that we will all get to where we are destined to be. I did email some Professors yesterday but I am yet to receive any response. Notwithstanding, I have done the applications and can't take them back. I also paid application fees complete. So whatever the outcome is, we move. Just be hopeful, I am sure you will be alright.
Cheers.

I found this useful but the part where the op didn't state why he felt he lost out this time madr me more curious

Bro, I am not completely hopeless on the matter. Although it seems like a tradition for PhD hopefuls to get their would be supervisors consent prior applications. However, I just did mine and allowed the supposed panel to sit on the matter and the outcome in God's hands. I believe this might be an undoing of some sort on my part. So I am only saying if the outcome does not favour me this time, I won't fail the next time if I still decide to tow the same path. Life is not completely meaningless here in the UK anyway.
Thanks.

It depends on School. Many Schools will ask you to apply directly to the department or Graduate School, then after one year of rotation, you will choose PI. Why others will ask you to e-mail a PI. Just check the department's website

You are very right on this. The schools I applied to didn't ask for admission to be made directly to the department. I applied through the grad school departments as required. However, during the application process, questions like "Have you been in touch with any Faculty member" did come up and others like"Do you have the approval of any faculty member to apply to this program" also came up. One major consistent thing here is that they have first year academic calender where students would rotate and finally be assigned to one PI.
Honestly, I feel I didn't do the needful and I may loose out this time but, there are better days ahead. Let's see what the feedback will be like and if I don't change my mind on the PhD thingy, I might reapply for Fall 2024.
Thanks for your input, I appreciate it.

Yes, you should first contact the supervisor you will like to work with.

PhD is not Masters. It's usually competitive and they are very selective. So, to increase your chances, you will go to the faculty page and choose the professor that their research interests align with yours and send them cold email. In your cold email, you will introduce yourself, talk about your GPA, your research interests, your proposed research topic, and your interest to be mentored and supervised by them.

***Please, contact one professor per department per school.

In your cold email, you can even request for a Zoom meeting at their earliest convenience. A professor that replies you and agrees for a Zoom meeting, is probably interested in working with you.

After meeting with them on Zoom meeting, send in your application. In your Statement of Purpose, state the fact that you will like to be mentored by that professor and that you have had a conversation with them via Zoom.

Also, admission decisions for Fall 2023 will be coming in by February and March. Admission portals for Fall usually opens around September or October. So, you will have to exercise patience to get a decision.

Thanks a lot for this detailed response. However, I already applied a long time a go (September) and I didn't have to contact anybody. But I will start sending out email following your ever-helpful guidance. I appreciate it. Well, na God get power.
Travel / Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 17 by Capitalbase: 5:14pm On Nov 28, 2022
Hi everybody,
Please, for those who are currently applying for PhD, did you have to email one of the faculty members whose research interests aligned with yours to facilitate your admission process. I applied for 3 PhD positions since September and this were open positions for Fall intake. However, I just felt like doing a follow up with graduate departments and one of the response I received seemed to suggest they are "ONLY" accepting those candidates whose "would be" mentors has approved for their applications to move to the next stage.
If anybody can throw more light to this, it would be much appreciated.

I believe there’s a pathway for PhDs to get GC in the US. But if I had to choose, Australia is the better option for me. I would even pick a PhD in Germany over one in the US

Hi Bro,
Can you please elaborate on this based on your thoughts as I am done with masters in the UK and looking towards USA for PhD at the moment.
Thanks

Good evening my people. Although I believe each and everyone of us is entitled to his opinion, stop heightening the blood pressure of your fellow human being just to prove a point. Yes, some of us invested in the platform and some are not within the country to follow up with issues now, does it pay you if somebody faces other adverse effects due to your trying to proof the scheme is scam and has collapsed? Just take it easy, let's hope that we will all get paid as at when due and also expect the worst if it comes cus the money wey some of us put no be small money and some have not even benefitted once from the platform. So kindly just let go off this "back and forth" argument and pray that it favors us at least, and expect same prayers from us in all your other endeavor as well.
