Car Talk › Re: Any Danger Starting Car With The A/C On? by cardoctor(m): 7:14pm On Aug 25, 2013
sniperwolf: I've been guilty of this act countless times. I just want to know if there are dangers starting a car with the air condition ON.
One time my dad was in the passenger seat and noticed that I had started the car with the A/C ON, he made me felt bad.
Back to my question, and DANGER? And how often do you do this?
If your car has climate controlled ac system, there is an auto switch system for the compressor that switches on the ac shortly after the car engine is started.

The purpose of this is to take off the load from the starter motor and the battery while cranking the engine.

On cars that have the manual ac system, its more advisable to always turn the ac off before starting the engine.

Simple. Carry out a scan of your abs system and that should point you to what is wrong.

lonelydora: A Friend drove my car and to my greatest surprise pulled out the top button of the gear stick. I Am the one that unscrewed the plastic covering so that I can move the car.

How can I get a new one or atleast repair the old one? That is, I need only the plastic covering with the button. Answers needed Urgently please.
You didn't indicate which state or town that you are in.

If you are in Abuja, head for Apo, Gudu or Zuba car parts mart. You will surely find it in any of these places.

What could your friend have been doing to damage this thing? It rarely gets spoilt sha. Just curious.

We are based in Abuja and we have a lot of experience in repairing Hybrid cars. Only problem is that you are in Lagos which is quite a distance from here.

Are you having any issues with your car?

Car Talk › Re: Is Benz ML320 Good For Nigeria Roads? by cardoctor(m):
Its not a bad idea. Just bear in mind that some of its technology are still alien to a lot of mechanics here and from your indication of the age of the car, that's when most of its problems become quite apparent.

Spare parts for them are becoming cheaper by the day and you may get away with that in some cases but these cars still have high maintenance costs if you have to keep them running as good as they were before shipping them down here.

After all, its a Mercedes Benz.

Make sure that the earth connections from your car's battery negative to body and engine are well connected and there is no rust on the connections then replace with original coil.

Car Talk › Re: What Is The Difference Between SOHC And DOHC Engines And Which Is Better? by cardoctor(m): 2:16pm On Aug 24, 2013
lomomike: DOHC is a type of engine/cam design DOHC means Double Over Head Cam (where two Cams placed over head operate the various valves both intake and out take/exhaust valves). Now there are 2 camshafts per header. So in an inline there are 2 camshafts because there is only one header, but there is 4 in a V-type or flat engine. These DOHC engines usually have 4 valves. One camshaft for the exhaust valves and the other for the intake valves

SOHC means Single Over Head Cam (Only a single cam rod operates the intake and out take valves). That means that there is only one camshaft per header. Inline engines will contain one camshaft. V-type and/or flat will contain 2 camshafts. For a SOHC engine there are usually 2 valves per cylinder but there can be more with the addition of cams for each valve.

When you compare their performance you discover that SOHC engines develops a little less power than its DOHC brother, but it develops more of its power earlier and is therefore more flexible and generally more economical. The DOHCs rev much harder and higher, and at mid to top revs develop much more power for the same displacement engine, making them ideal for racing or performance vehicles. And if the DOHC is a V-engine, like a V6 or V8, it could be called a Quad-cam.

SOHC engines are cheaper and less complicated to design, build and maintain because of the lesser moving parts, while DOHC are more complex to design build and repair because of the extra moving parts.

Another advantage of having a DOHC engine over a SOHC is that the engine has twice as many intake and exhaust valves as a SOHC motor. This makes the engine run cooler and more smoothly, quietly, and efficiently. But the downfall is that DOHC engines cost more for repairs.

laluski: Hello,
My 94' camry jerks when ever in reverse or in drive and has become a bit more pronounced of late.may I know the problem and possible solution please.also can it be due to ECM problem posted by earthrealm awhile back.
A mechanic said its the engine seat.
Tnx
Your car will require a thorough physical examination of the engine and gearbox mountings before a conclusion would be made on a possible gearbox fault or ecm.

That's the first step and it may not be easily diagnosed on this forum and end up with so many unnecessary suggestions that may throw you off the track. Check the mountings first.

chuqudy: You like high mileage cars, so I suggest that any one whose odometer reading is getting to about 1000 miles, should sell the car to you immediately.
Only 1000 miles? I would be glad to buy it and keep it moving till I no longer can. Then sell it to you.

chuqudy: So for your mind you don do correction abi? When a car reaches that highest mileage which it can go, would it not STOP MOVING? Abi it go continue from where it stop. Now over to you. Answer your question, "what's the highest mileage a car can go?"

I know your answer would still be your old silly answer. Keep it up!!!

The question was not silly. It was an interesting question that he simply did not ask in the right way. Hence my suggestion.
Interesting question that wasn't asked in the right way. Very smart indeed. SMH
Car Talk › Re: At What Mileage Would A Car Stop Moving? by cardoctor(m):
DanNafada: Indeed no such thing as a stupid question on a forum. We are all here to learn. That said, the question perhaps should have been:

What is the highest mileage a car can go before it permanently breaks down?
If the question weren't silly, why bother with offering an option?

The question should have been "what's the highest mileage a car can go?"

Is that not more realistic?

lamex20: @car-doctor u're senseless ... d poor guy only ask a question, insted u answered as a bamboo
@Lame x20

You must be as sillly as the silly question he asked.
There is no semblence of intellect in the question posted. Its like asking at what age should a person die?

The life span of everything depends on the circumstances that prevail in its environment. Its an unfortunate decision we can't make.

A brand new car that got crushed by a freight train did not detrmine its fate by itself just like a baby born today and doesn't make it to the next.

The same car could out live several generations of men and will still be moving as well as it was when brand new.

Man invented and built cars and so their life expectancy depends on us. We can still restore a car to its original glory even if drops into the deepest part of the ocean, falls from outer space to a concrete floor on earth or crushed by a steam roller.

The point I'm trying to make is that it all depends on us and how we care about the car. For that to happen, we must be alive and able to do whatever it may take to keep it moving and you Don't need half a brain to figure that out.

I Don't really know where you may study automobile engineering here in Nigeria. I studied in the UK but I'm sure there may be places, probably in Lagos where you could possibly acquire a certificate in Automobile Mechatronics. I hope someone else may offer a contribution that may have more information on that.

Best advice is to attach yourself to a garage local to your area and at least start your learning on the practical hang of things.
