Its a V6 engine. Get the hang of it or buy a moped. Car-Doctor. |
grimadult: @car doctor, you are 101% correct. Have done evry check and services dat needs to be done but one still bothers my mind. My transmission. Am just too scared dat it might not take me from point A to B(owerri-minna). Its transmission is slipping in btwn gears(1-2)(2-1). After these gears it moves very smooth and seletcs d other gears with no problem at all. What do u suggest I do about it?? Please help a brother. The only help I can offer you is the advice to have your gearbox overhauled. Once you have a slipping clutch, its an indication that the fibres are worn. Have them replaced by a gearbox expert. Car-Doctor. |
omenka: Check the rotors of your front wheels. They just might be warped or may have cracked.Well out of point. ![]() Car-Doctor. |
elektra80: I don't know much about Toyota so I stand to be corrected. Yes 1999 Toyota Camry has more than one engine type. I believe u are talking about 4 cylinder here, hence the S. The 3S-FE is a 2.0L engine which is found in most Asia models while the 5S-FE is a 2.2L engine found in American and Australian models. Since most camrys on Nigerian soil are imported from America, u hardly find one with 2.0L 3S-FE engines. However, many parts dealers import their parts from Japan, that is why when u are buying a tokunbo engine for ur Camry then u can get the 2.0L 3S-FE engine readily available.Well said. |
Very simple. Change your radiator cover with a new one of the same exact type for your car. Car-Doctor. |

Hayorowolahbi: P0135, P0155, P2628, P2647.P0135- Oxygen O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1, Sensor 1) Same as P2628 Honda Description This code refers to the front oxygen sensor on Bank 1. The heated circuit in the oxygen sensor decreases time needed to enter closed loop. As the O2 heater reaches operating temperature, the oxygen sensor responds by switching according to oxygen content of the exhaust surrounding it. The ECM tracks how long it takes for the oxygen sensor to begin switching. It the ECM determines (based on coolant temp) that too much time elapsed before the oxygen sensor began operating properly, it will set P0135. P0155- 02 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 2 Sensor 1) This code refers to the front oxygen sensor on Bank 2. It the ECM determines (based on coolant temp) that too much time elapsed before the oxygen sensor began operating properly, it will set P0155. P2647 Honda - VTEC Oil Pressure Switch Circuit High Voltage P2647 Honda Description The VTEC system activates the rocker arm oil control solenoid (VTEC solenoid valve) by command from the engine control module (ECM)/powertrain control module (PCM), and it charges/discharges the hydraulic circuit of the VTEC mechanism that switches valve timing between Low and High. The ECM/PCM monitors oil pressure in the hydraulic circuit of the VTEC mechanism using the rocker arm oil pressure switch (VTEC oil pressure switch) downstream of the rocker arm oil control solenoid (VTEC solenoid valve). If there is a difference between the oil pressure condition in the hydraulic circuit that is determined by the ECM/PCM command and the oil pressure condition that is determined by the status of the rocker arm oil pressure switch (VTEC oil pressure switch), the system is considered faulty, and a DTC is stored. I hope these details above would point you in the right direction of diagnosing the faults on your car but I would still recommend that you check your fuel supply to the engine from the fuel tank. What you described is typical of fuel supply restriction. At idle or low speeds, everything is fine but once you put your foot down for more power or speed, the engine starts cutting out and jerking yet it won't shut down. The scan result DTC's that you posted may not be significant to this behavior but may be related. Check your fuel pump pressure and filter and also check to see if there are constrictions in the fuel line. Probably some time earlier someone may have used jubilee clips to join the fuel pipes hence restricting full pressure flow in the pipes. Car-Doctor. |

capsogiga: HELLO GUYS.Everybody on the forum seems to have a solution to your problem but none has worked so far. The real issue could be your drive shaft ABS ring gear. Its either broken or not in full contact with the ABS sensor. This will typically cause the type of problem you complained about and I'm talking from experience. You could end up changing ABS pump and sensors without results. Start by checking the ABS ring gears first. If you are in Abuja, feel free to bring the car into our workshop and I will help you check it up. Car-Doctor.

sweetlarry: what is mean / difference from blue and black smoke from engine.Blue or whitish smoke from your exhaust indicates weak piston rings, bad valve stem oil seals or a worn out engine. Black smoke indicates a high concentration of fuel during engine combustion. This could be caused by the following: Faulty air flow meter Faulty oxygen sensors Poor quality fuel Bad engine valves seats Wrong ignition timing Bad or wrong spark plugs Dirty air filter Bad or clogged injector nozzles Faulty stepper motor or throttle head Bad catalytic converter Faulty ECU ECM or brainbox (all the same) Stoooooopid mechanics and rewires that double head gaskets, remove thermostats and wire cooling fans to be permanently on.
Please Gurus in the house, can someone tell me the authenticity of this product which is seriously gaining popularity in many parts of Nigeria. The distributors claimed that the product improves engine efficiency and fuel economy. Can people who know about it tell me how true this is? I want better fuel economy even though my cars are not performing badly at the moment but I am afraid of pouring anything in my fuel tank, thank you all.
Its just shrewd marketing strategy by the manufactures of these products. They try to sell it to you at every fill up and make you believe in its potentials. Most are fake and Not necessarily guaranteed to give you any improvement in performance or whatever they may promise but definitely bad for your car if used consistently at every fill up. Just like sienna quoted, It has not really been proven to increase gas mileage. They tend to build up residues on and around the fuel injector nozzles and eventually end up blocking the jets. they are usually the main cause of injector nozzle's problems. I would advise that you stay away from them. Car-Doctor. |
shevon: Hi all. I'm about buying a 2001 Kia Spectra for my wife and new baby. I'd appreciate you guys advice as per the car (I mean the Pros and Cons). Please, it is pretty urgent as I intend to close out the deal by Monday. Not a bad car at all. Very few people know much about it that's why you are getting the responses like the ones above^^^. Though made in Korea, Its as reliable as any Toyota corolla, Nissan Primera or any Japanese and is also called the Cerrato. A few of our customers own these cars and would not sell them for any reason due to their reliability. It has low maintenance costs and superb fuel economy if well maintained by previous owner. Mostly comes with 1.6 Ltr engine that's just good enough to get you from a to b with ease. Seats five people comfortably although its a small saloon/ hatchback. Some come with electric windows, mirrors and air conditioning as standard. What have you got on the one you are about to buy? I would advice that you speak directly to current owners that you may know and seek their more honest opinions. Car-Doctor. |
Siena: Not always the case. On many newer models, whereby the TCU is embedded in the transmission, the TCU has to be re-programmed.@sienna You are absolutely correct with the Ford TCM programming on the Twin Clutch units. However, the Toyota Camry "Orobo" in this case is probably 1991-1998 model XV10. The gearboxes on these models do not require any form of programming. Car-Doctor. |
With the travelling season again on our hands, the Nigerian motorists’ worst nightmare is having to break down far from where the nearest help may be. For that reason, it’s vitally important to ensure that your car is in a serviceable condition before setting out on any journey, no matter how near or distant it may be. Outside of your cars periodic maintenance service, cars, like humans, require regular check-ups, especially before a long journey. Making sure that the car is properly serviced by qualified professionals in a proper garage and all preparatory checks are done before setting off such as engine and transmission oil levels, engine coolant levels, brake fluid levels, tire pressures etc are among a host of other things that a good motorist should do to ensure a safe and smooth journey. With today's computer controlled cars and the ever increasing sophistication in automobile technology, keeping tab of a check list on your average modern car has all of a sudden become a daunting prospect. Car owners have to keep scratching their heads and wondering what to check next. A badly repaired car and the lack of pre-travel checks are a leading cause of road side breakdowns and traffic accidents and these pose a serious risk to the safety of individuals on the road. A recent FRSC poll showed that over 80 percent of the Nigerian motorists do not bother to have the most basic checks done before setting off on a long distance journey. On a recent trip by road from Abuja to Lagos, I counted no fewer than 13 broken down cars by the roadside (some of them were in the middle of nowhere) with their engine bonnets opened up and occupants peering into the engine bay at what may appear to them to be a black hole. With the deplorable conditions of most Nigerian roads and the lack of adequate and efficient roadside breakdown assistance, faith in the Almighty, rather than your car or your mechanic is what you may require to make it from point A to B. Before embarking on a journey, forward thinking and planning is essential in order to allow reasonable time to carry out any repairs that may be required hence reducing the risk of disappointment. Its more advisable to have your car checked two or three days before your travel date and have it certified with a clean bill of health. This also allows you to test the car properly prior to your travel date. Taking your car to a qualified mechanic to do a pre-travel check is always recommended if not essential but there are simple checks that you can carry out by yourself so why don’t you start by checking it yourself. Start by checking the battery and ensure that the battery is capable of cranking the engine and maintaining its charge while under load with headlights, air-conditioning and a few other electrical components in operation. This would also simultaneously check the alternators charging capability. In the event of an alternator failing to supply charge to the battery, all operational electrical components including the ECU (Electronic Control Unit; usually called Brain Box) use up the batteries strength with the consequence resulting in a complete shut down due to low voltage and the car would stall permanently until the problem is rectified. Another common cause of engine failure is the lack of sufficient engine oil. Always check the engine oil level. Pull out the dipstick and ensure that the oil level is on the top mark. Engine damage could result if your engine oil level drops too low or poor quality oil being used. Ensure that you top up with engine oil of the same grade of engine oil in your car engine. Refer to your car manufacturer’s handbook for the correct specifications. The same applies to your transmission especially if you drive an automatic car. Check your radiator coolant level and if low, top it up. This is to ensure that your car doesn't overheat and breakdown with a blown head gasket during the course of your journey. Ensure that your windscreen washer tank is filled with water, so that you will be able to wash your windscreen whenever necessary. Also check for wear on your wipers. Worn out wipers will leave streaks on your windscreen that may obstruct your view especially when driving in rain. You should always check your tires and their recommended pressures and ensure they are measured to the right values. An astonishing 58% of motorway accidents are a result of tire failures usually caused by incorrectly inflated tires. Make sure that all head lights, brake lights and indicators are fully functional and any blown bulb replaced. Also make sure that the brake fluid is at the recommended level and that the brake pads and discs or drums are within their wear limits. With the engine switched off, check that all engine driven belts are reasonably tight and not too loose. Check power steering fluid and top up if necessary. Make sure that you carry an emergency kit at all times such as warning triangles, spare tire, jack and wheel spanner, a tool kit. A few extra liters of water, engine oil, transmission and brake fluid may come in handy in a tight situation. It’s also essential to keep your mobile phone fully charged as you may need to keep in contact if anything goes wrong. Make sure that all relevant documents to your vehicle as well as your driver’s license are with you to avoid unnecessary delays at vehicle checking points. A common mistake that motorists make is setting off without sufficient fuel in the tank usually in the hope that they could always refuel along the way only to be surprised that when the empty tank indicator begins to flash, that the nearest filling station is beyond where the reserve would carry them. Always also ensure that you fill up your tank with sufficient fuel before setting off. After all these, just say a prayer for a safe journey. Safe journey and Happy Sallah to all Nairalanders. Ikenna351: Correct name is Starter, not "Kick starter".@Ikenna Correct name is "Starter Motor" not "starter". No kill me o ![]() @Okpara ugo Your fuel pump or your fuel pressure governor could be the problem. Most delayed start ups (especially if all other conditions are ok) is usually caused by the fuel pump either being weak in delivering the appropriate pressure until you have done several cranks of the engine or the fuel pressure governor not retaining pressure within the fuel rail after engine has been switched off. Its also possible that in previous repairs or change to the fuel pump on your car that a technician may have used jubilee clips to hold the fuel lines together. This process could also constrict the fuel lines and hinder the fuel supply so have the fuel lines checked too. Have these 3 things checked out. Here are some pics from a BMW 3 series that encountered the same issue. Car-Doctor.

Change your drive shafts. If after you have done all these things you described and getting no joy, change the drive shafts. The shafts could be bent and you would never know and its usually the least suspicious. You end up changing all these things and the problem is still there. A similar issue came into my workshop last week and it turned out to be that driver side drive shaft that was causing the vibes. Car-Doctor. |

bybj: Hi Guys,"Drinking fuel like garri". Very funny .If you already have the check engine light on then You must first carry out a scan on your car and submit the report to the forum before any viable advice would be given. It just makes things easier. Your fuel consumption issues could be linked to an underlying problem with your engine emission systems. That's why the OBD2 protocol will always switch the CEL on if there is a fault in the system. Please locate a scanning place close to you, scan and post the results here. Thanks Car-Doctor. |
This is rapidly becoming a serious issue in Nigeria due to the reckless abandon of automobiles, motor bikes, keke napeps, electric generators etc emitting toxic fumes all over the place. Recently in Lagos, several members of a church choir having a night vigil all suffocated and died of carbon monoxide poisoning inside the church while running the electric generator inside the church because it was raining outside. Here is an excerpt with more convincing detail. Happy reading. Carbon monoxide poisoning occurs after enough inhalation of carbon monoxide (CO). Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas, but, being colorless, odorless, tasteless, and initially non-irritating, it is very difficult for people to detect. Carbon monoxide is a product of incomplete combustion of organic matter due to insufficient oxygen supply to enable complete oxidation to carbon dioxide (CO2). It is often produced in domestic or industrial settings by older motor vehicles and other gasoline-powered tools, heaters, and cooking equipment. Exposures at 100 ppm or greater can be dangerous to human health. Symptoms of mild acute poisoning include lightheadedness, confusion, headaches, vertigo, and flu-like effects; larger exposures can lead to significant toxicity of the central nervous system and heart, and even death. Following acute poisoning, long-term sequelae often occur. Carbon monoxide can also have severe effects on the fetus of a pregnant woman. Chronic exposure to low levels of carbon monoxide can lead to depression, confusion, and memory loss. Carbon monoxide mainly causes adverse effects in humans by combining with hemoglobin to form carboxyhemoglobin (HbCO) in the blood. This prevents hemoglobin from releasing oxygen in tissues, effectively reducing the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood, leading to hypoxia. Additionally, myoglobin and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase are thought to be adversely affected. Carboxyhemoglobin can revert to hemoglobin, but the recovery takes time because the HbCO complex is fairly stable. Treatment of poisoning largely consists of administering 100% oxygen or providing hyperbaric oxygen therapy, although the optimum treatment remains controversial. Oxygen works as an antidote as it increases the removal of carbon monoxide from hemoglobin, in turn providing the body with normal levels of oxygen. The prevention of poisoning is a significant public health issue. Domestic carbon monoxide poisoning can be prevented by early detection with the use of household carbon monoxide detectors. Carbon monoxide poisoning is the most common type of fatal poisoning in many countries. Historically, it was also commonly used as a method to commit suicide, usually by deliberately inhaling the exhaust fumes of a running car engine. Modern automobiles, even with electronically-controlled combustion and catalytic converters, can still produce levels of carbon monoxide which will kill if enclosed within a garage or if the tailpipe is obstructed (for example, by snow) and exhaust gas cannot escape normally. Carbon monoxide poisoning has also been implicated as the cause of apparent haunted houses; symptoms such as delirium and hallucinations have led people suffering poisoning to think they have seen ghosts or to believe their house is haunted. Thanks Haywhy28 for posting this topic. For more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_monoxide_poisoning Car-Doctor. |
winzy: My Camry 1998 Produces Foul smell whenever i switch the AC on, smells like a dead rat or something, i have washed the engine but still persists, any suggestion and help will be appreciated..... Thanks in advance! Sorry for ma previous mistake, I don't know the rules, pls...can you help now?Aside from Ikenna's suggestions, you may probably be really dealing with a rodent that got trapped inside your ac blower motor and died as a result of possible contact with the blower motor fan blades or grille (I have seen that happen before). Rodents, especially rats, would find their way into nooks and crannies of your car engine and vents to build nests and it would be of no surprise to me if one has actually done that. That smell is very distinct and unmistakable and if you think it is then it may actually be. You could simply start by removing your glove box cover and gain access to the blower motor and its housing to see if anything foreign or strange may be there. A bit of a tricky job but if it proves too difficult then I would advise that you contact an ac technician nearest to you to investigate further. Car-Doctor. |

Too much info here that may drive you nuts. I'm now wondering if my suggestion won't become and information overload. Whatever you do, Don't ever let anyone take you down the ECU or brainbox lane or you could end up in more trouble. I know a lot has been suggested on what your problem could be and possible solutions but from my experience you really need to have someone with the right experience to look at this car physically. From the way it sounds, your camshaft or crankshaft position sensor may be the culprit. In local parlancel, its called the starting sensor and it tends to have the habit of failing when its hot and that's when it has gone bad. The car will start and drive perfectly until you switch off and the moment you try to start when the engine is hot, nothing. You will then have to wait until the engine cools down a bit before it would start again. I have experienced this before and it almost got me changing lots of unnecesary things before I zeroed it down. Another annoying thing is that it won't show up on the scan. If you happen to be in abuja at anytime before the problem is solved, let me know. Car-Doctor. |

Sometimes I wonder why they call it Big for Nothing. I love this car wether in V6 form or in-line 4. Very comfortable ride with plenty of room not only in the cabin but also in the boot. The air conditioning on this car is super cold. From what I hear, the ac is its strongest selling point. Lovely sound system, and reasonably well equipped depending on the spec. I would definitely gio for the XLE if I have to buy one. It also has superb fuel economy if only it hasn't been molested by thermostat removing mechanics and direct cooling fan connecting rewires. From a mechanics point of view, its easy to work on and everything is laid out for your convinience. I must admit that the shape looks a bit ugly and I think that's why some people loathe it. Car-Doctor. |
Prepare him for air suspension issues on older models like the years you mentioned. Very excellent suv to travel in on Nigerian roads. Soaks up bumps like a mop and has superb acceleration and torque for pulling power. I would advise that he goes for later models such as 2009- onward. Most of the teething problems have been sorted out on the newer models. Car-Doctor. |
