Have you noticed that when you’re driving on rough roads, you feel the effect of the rough roads in some cars more than others? Well, that's the work of your shock absorber. 1. Your tyres begin to wear unevenly

1. Stop
Don't assume the damage was minimal and drive off. Park your vehicle and stop.
2. Check Yourself
Let this be the very next thing you should do. Don't panic. Don't think about your car. Don't start getting angry over the other party's error that led to the accident. Do not even try to scream for help yet.

Sometimes, the adrenaline that pumped through your body when the accident was still in motion could numb your body to pain. This means that you might not be able to feel pains immediately after the accident. That is why you should make sure to check yourself for any signs of injury. Can you lift your arm? Is it broken or just trapped beneath something? Can you lift your legs? Can you open your eyes? Are you bleeding from anywhere?

When you have answers to those questions, you would be able to know if you need immediate medical attention that is beyond the powers of mere first aid. If you need immediate attention, let that be your priority. Try to get help.
3. Check for signs of immediate danger on the scene
Have you ever seen movies where an accident occurs but the vehicle doesn't explode until some time after a collision, or something like that. Do you know that thing could actually happen in reality? There could be a fuel leak after the accident occurs that you are unaware of. The slightest spark could set blow things up.

So, make sure you check for signs of immediate danger if you can. If you can't, just try to move away from the accident spot.
4. Call the FRSC or the Police
No, your parents aren't the right people to call. Your wife isn't the right person. Neither are your relatives nor your friends the right people. Except! Except any of these people work for the FRSC or the Police. If they don't, then call the FRSC on any of these numbers: 122 or 07002255372. The passersby could be able to offer a little help here or there but they aren't professionals. They were not trained to handle such situations like the FRSC are trained to do. Let them be the first people you call.

When they arrive, make your statement as best as you can. Don't guess. If you don't have some details, tell them you don't. If you aren't certain about something, let them know.

Whether you believe you were at fault it not, call the FRSC. And that brings us to the next point.
5. Never admit that you were wrong
You were involved in the accident. You may not know everything you think you know to be able to determine who was at fault. That is why you shouldn't admit to being wrong. If you allow the other party involved in the accident to talk you into agreeing that you were in the wrong when, in fact, you weren't, you would be making matters worse for yourself when your insurance company gets involved.
6. Let your insurance company know about it
Make a report to your insurance company. They need to know. Whether you were at fault or not, they still need to know what's going on. Except you want to foot the bills of repairing the damages done to your vehicle and maybe those done to the other party's vehicle.
7. Seek medical attention
After you have checked yourself and made sure that there is no immediate threat to your life as advised in the second point above, you can go ahead and with the other points. But do not forget to still get to a clinic or a hospital to check yourself up. In a lot of cases, accident victims don't start feeling some pain until days after the accident. You don't have to wait until then.

Electric Vehicles in Nigeria - Are We Ready Now?

The age of electric vehicles is a fairytale playing out in reality. Today, vehicles are largely dependent on fuel, whether diesel or petrol. Unfortunately, with the way the combustion engines we have in our vehicles are designed, there isn’t always complete or perfect combustion. The consequence of this is that our vehicles release some gases in the air. Whether we know it or not, these gases are gradually harming our dear Earth. And this is exactly why electric vehicles are a fairytale: You can use your cars without emitting these Earth-depleting gases. Electric vehicles run on electricity, and when they run low on power, you simply charge them like you would charge your phone.

Today, many countries are already embracing this technology, and quickly. Norway, the leading country when it comes to the percentage of electric vehicles on its roads, said they want to go fully electric by 2025. This is quite feasible for them as they are halfway there already. However, what about our dear country, Nigeria? Are we joining this wave or are we going to wait and watch while these good things pass us by? This brings us to the first question.
Is Nigeria ready for electric vehicles?
I want to give a straight answer but it isn’t all that simple. There are a lot of factors to put into consideration. You probably already have an answer in your head, and that’s fine. Just spare me some minutes to explain myself.
Why Nigeria may not be ready for electric vehicles
Well, these reasons are quite obvious to Nigerians. The first reason that probably comes to mind is;
1. Lack of consistent electricity
A country that wants to depend on electricity to power a sector as critical and important as the transportation sector must have a consistent power supply. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for Nigeria. According to USAID, Nigeria “ has the potential to generate 12,522 megawatts (MW) of electric power from existing plants, but most days is only able to generate around 4,000 MW”. But you might want to argue that we could use a generator to charge the cars. Theoretically, you can. But logically, you shouldn’t. Generators run on fuel themselves. So if you are using a generator that runs on fuel to charge an electric vehicle, it defeats the purpose of using electric vehicles.
2. Politics
In April 2019, a bill that was meant to stop the use of petrol cars was dismissed. Let’s not forget how important “oil money” is to the affluence of many powerful Nigerians today. Also, Nigeria earns a lot from the foreign export of crude oil. You would expect any potential blockage that might want to cut down the gains from this “oil money” to be quickly trampled upon by the Ogas at the top, wouldn’t you?
3. Poverty
Who are we kidding? Nigeria, though has its own fair share of billionaires, is a poverty-stricken country. According to a report by the World Poverty Clock, Nigeria, which has a population of about 200 million, currently has 95million people living in extreme poverty. That’s about half the country not being able to feed themselves. In case you need a gentle reminder, hungry people don’t buy cars, petrol-fueled or electricity-powered.

For these reasons, it is safe to conclude that Nigeria is in no way ready for electric vehicles. But there are two sides to a coin.
Why Nigeria may be ready for electric vehicles
These aren’t things that are immediately obvious until you think deeper. Here are some reasons why Nigeria may be ready for electric vehicles:
1. Range
Many electric vehicles being produced have quite impressive ranges; how far they can go on a single charge. Most of them have ranges that range from 200km to 600km. Now that is quite impressive, especially if you’re travelling within a city. So let us assume that you are travelling from Badagry to Ita Oko Island in Lagos, two extreme ends of the State. According to Google Maps, the distance is 158km. The implication of this is that you can go this distance in the electric vehicles with the smallest ranges on just one full charge. Definitely, this is a good thing.
2. Cost of electric vehicles
Electric cars aren’t all that expensive. According to Quartz, the average cost of electric cars is $36,000 (about NGN13 million), and according to MoneyUnder30, the average cost of the normal car is $33,000 (about NGN12 million). As you can see, there isn’t much difference between the two costs.


3. Charging Cost
Tesla Model S, one of the most powerful electric cars today, has a battery capacity of 100kWh. Many other electric vehicles have battery capacities of less than 75kWh. In Nigeria, commercial electricity tariffs range from as low as 20NGN to about 64NGN per kWh, depending on the distribution company (disco). As a matter of fact, only a handful of discos charge as high as 64NGN, and this charge is only reserved for HV Maximum Voltage commercial uses. But for the sake of argument, let’s use the 64NGN charge for the high-end electric vehicle, Tesla Model S. To charge the Tesla Model S fully, it would cost 64NGN multiplied by 100kWh, equating to 6,400NGN. Do not forget that Tesla Model S has a range of 600km.

Toyota Corolla, one of the most fuel-efficient cars in Nigeria has a fuel economy of 12.75kilometers per liter within a city. For Corolla to go as far as 600km, it would cost about 6,900NGN at an average price of 147NGN per litre of petrol. This is a good bargain if you ask me, especially when you’re just comparing one of the most power-hungry of the electric vehicles to one of the most fuel-efficient of the petrol-fueled vehicles. Also, you can also have your own private charging spot for your own electric car, reducing the cost of electricity to as low as 4NGN per kWh.

By the way, just as there are public filling stations for petrol-fueled vehicles, there is something similar for electric vehicles. They are called Public Charging Stations.
4. Cost of repairs and maintenance
Unlike the petrol-fueled cars that are more likely to develop faults because of their many moving parts, electric cars don’t have as many moving parts. Consequently, there is less need to make repairs on electric cars.

Wrapping it all up
I guess you now understand my dilemma. For good reasons, you can argue for and against the fact that Nigeria is ready for electric vehicles.

However, here’s what I think if you want to buy an electric car: As an individual in Nigeria, you can buy an electric car if you can afford it. You just have to make sure you have your own charging space at your home. Also, whenever you want to use your electric car, make sure you do your calculations to know if your battery is charged well enough to take you to your destination and back home.

Make sure your windshield, windows, and mirrors are clean. You need to see everything worth seeing and see them clearly. Make sure that your windshield wipers are working properly. Also, check your tyres for any signs of damage. If they are old, replace them.

In addition, listen to weather forecasts. Technology has made a lot of things easier these days. You can easily check the weather forecast on your phone. Try to put your ears out for some incidents that could make you late for your appointments and try to see if there are alternative routes to avoid the incidents. Because when you are late, you tend to drive faster, and this isn’t advisable in bad weather conditions.

2. Drive safely by not driving at all… if you can
This is, in fact, the best way to be safe when you are driving in the rain or bad weather. Have you experienced weather conditions where you could barely see what’s right in front of you, talkless of trying to get around on a busy road? It’s just a smart decision to find a safe place to park your car and wait it out if you can.

You simply turn in the direction your car is skidding without pressing the brake and the gas pedals. This way, your car recovers from the skid by itself. Remember, don’t match that brake pedal, don’t match the gas pedal.

Now, imagine you were actually speeding and your car starts skidding on a wet road, you would most likely crash into something before you are able to stop.

6. Leave a reasonable distance between you and the car in front of you
I believe the heading has said it all. Your car takes longer to come to a stop when the road is wet than when the road is dry. So, it only makes sense for you to plan ahead and create some room for yourself when you’re driving in the rain

I would do a list for the most purchased tokunbo and Nigeria Used cars but there aren’t any recognized report gathering bodies for these sales categories. So we would have to make do with the world statistics.

Without beating around the bush, here’s a list of the most purchased cars so far in 2019, my Christmas edition.

Place the drain pan beneath the oil filter before you remove it by turning it in a counterclockwise direction. The oil filter is usually black, blue or white. You'll know recognize it when you see it.

The first time I involved myself in a car import, I went through a clearance agent. My first experience wasn’t bad but I’m certain I was cheated and used like a money bag. The next time, I decided to bear the burden alone to save extra cash. If you think it’s a very easy task, you are wrong, it isn’t. The only easy task is negotiating with a dealer and having an agent get your car onboard a ship. So many bureaucratic factors cause the procedure to become tight and stressful.

Moreover, any medium you use for the importation still owes clearance because it’s a basic and necessary phase. It’d have been easier to start using your car without knowing how to clear imported cars in Nigeria. However, for various reasons, clearance is necessary and doesn’t come without costing you some bucks. Step 1
Get Your Waybill or Car B/L
The first and foremost thing on how to clear imported cars in Nigeria is to obtain this receipt. B/L is an acronym for Bill of Lading and it is also sometimes represented as BoL. In some cases, it’s called waybill but I prefer to address it as car’s Bill of Lading in this case. This is a receipt given by the carrier to the shipper. It acknowledges the receipt of the car(s) being shipped and specifies the terms of car(s) delivery. It also contains the details of the car you are importing from anywhere to Nigeria and is very important. I need not repeat that it contains the information about the car you ship and would be necessary for clearance. There are two ways of obtaining this receipt. You can get it via any Nigerian courier service that will convenience you or request for a softcopy via mail. In my case, I preferred a softcopy which was forwarded to my mail. I then proceeded to print it as hardcopy to kick-start the clearance procedures.

Step 2
Ascertain Car’s Import Duty
I’d like to explain procedural terms as we progress on how to clear imported cars in Nigeria. Import duty is simply the car importation taxing and does not refer responsibility, as you might think. This step is where a clearing agency would be needed but I successfully scaled it. Since it requires a simple letter writing, there are computer stalls around that’ll draft an agency’s letterhead for you. In fact, they have various registered clearance agency’s letterhead and you’d just have to pick the one your mind prefers. Once the draft is certain and ready, the content should be such that requests import duty valuation of your car. In case you did not obtain your B/L, you need it because you’ll attach it to the letter. It’s, in some cases, the first slip that the Nigerian Customs would look out for.
During this phase, the details of your car on B/L is what determines your car import valuation. For instance, if car B/L details states that your car is new, you’ll incur additional 35% levy from the initial 35% surface duty. I’ll write more on this in the section below where I state the cost of car importation clearance in Nigeria.

Step 3
Obtain Valuation Site and Perform DTI
DTI means Direct Trader Input and refers to the input of car valuation on Customs web base. This should cost just few minutes, if not seconds of your time. This is a simple upload that requires sincerity. I refer to this stage as the ‘property declaration’ stage because you’ll upload info beyond your car. Apart from the car, whatever other item is present in the car must be stated and must undergo import valuation. Besides, if you devalue your import duty, when Step 6 inspection takes place, it’ll affect you with delays and questioning. During this stage, ensure that you have verified with your valid Tax Identification Number (TIN). You would slightly have to rapport with a certified clearance agency at this time to scale this stage. I’m suggesting this in case you do not have TIN. Besides, every process requires the TIN.

Step 4
Print SGD and Assessment Notice
SGD refers to Single Goods Declaration. This step on how to clear imported cars in Nigeria is just a few-seconds step. It involves a simple printing of forms and these forms must contain the appropriate car information. Whatever happens, do not alter or falsify any information about your car. If you should dare to falsify any info, let it not be the Customs import valuation of your car. You might be tempted to do this, but don’t because all of these would be verified again and again before your car exits port. It is moments such as this that also cause people’s car to be impounded.

Step 5
Import Duty Valuation Payment Time
There are two payment options available, it’s either you inconvenience yourself through the bank or simply pay online. Anyways, I won’t digress this writing from what I did. I paid mine through the bank and I also presented my Assessment Notice form to the bank. Whichever payment method you use, do not fail to obtain a payment receipt. If you do not, I’m not sure of other ways you’ll follow to bypass Nigerian Customs without payment verification.

Step 6
Car Details Verification and Inspection
During the times I was preaching ‘sincerity’ up there, it was to avoid setbacks here. Insincerity doesn’t count on how to clear imported cars in Nigeria because you are risking impoundment. This is the time when you’ll submit all the forms you’ve been collecting. They include Bill of Lading (B/L), Payment Receipt (bank or online), Import Duty Valuation Papers, Assessment Notice and Single Goods Declaration (SGD) form. Note, provided information must tally with details on each form or slip. When the inspecting officers come forth, they expect to find exactly what is present on each form. SGD Form Submission to Appropriate Shipping Company
The submission of your Single Goods Declaration form follows as step 7 on how to clear imported cars in Nigeria. Step 9 – Quarter Final
CIU Stamp/Signature

Step 10 – Semi Final
Proceed to Terminal Operator Office
Here is where you make your final payments and to the terminal operator office. You will be issued a terminal charge or debit note and you’re to pay at designated banks. Return here after making payments to obtain your Delivery Order (DO) and have your car released by your shipper. The terminal operator will also issue you a Terminal Delivery Order (TDO) to finalize things.

Step 11 – Final
Final Vehicle Movement and Final Verifications
Here is when your vehicle moves to the final gate and for final verifications. The customs Officer there would crosscheck every detail of the said car. When it’s certain that it tallies with your documents, you’ll be allowed out. You can park somewhere, call your lover and inform him/her of your new wheel’s arrival and run the Nigerian roads.
