A nurse identified as Josephine Iyamu has been convicted of heading up a criminal network that subjected vulnerable Nigerian women to voodoo rituals before trafficking them. The Nigerian lady reportedly forced the trafficked women to swear oaths to hand over money to her during "juju" ceremonies. According to media reports, Josephine denied trafficking five women from Nigeria to Germany and exploiting them for prostitution across Europe. But following a ten week trial, a jury at Birmingham Crown Court today convicted her of modern slavery offences and perverting the course of justice. The 51-year-old's conviction is the first successful prosecution of a British national under the Modern Slavery Act involving victims who have no connection to the UK, but have been victimised by a UK national. Her husband was found not guilty of perverting the course of justice. The National Crime Agency began investigating Iyamu in July 2017 after the German Polizei identified one of her victims and recovered evidence pointing to her being the ringleader of a network trafficking vulnerable women. NCA officers tracked down Iyamu, known to her victims as Madam Sandra, to a small flat in Bermondsey, South London, where she was working as a nurse. The voodoo rituals saw the women forced to eat chicken hearts, drink blood containing worms, and have powder rubbed into cuts, the court heard. According to reports, the case is the first in England and Wales in which a British citizen has been prosecuted for sexual trafficking offences committed outside the UK. According to philanthropist Ukan Kurugh, the woman passed away leaving behind her little baby as the husband pleaded that the baby who is now 6 months old should be adopted into an orphanage home. Today, the woman will be laid to rest at her hometown in Benue. May her soul rest in peace. Ukan Kurugh wrote on Facebook; This morning I and Dcns Lynn are on our way to attend the burial of Mrs. Roseline Akaaer, a resident of Mbawuar in Vandeikya Local Government who was burnt in her thatched hut on the 3rd of February 2018 with her 3months old baby. We had put in resources in making sure she made it alive, even when the Dr's certified she was ok and could return home. A bill of N83,300 was paid by a good Samaritan living in Liberia. Its sad anyways that we still lost her to the cold hands of death. The husband had cried to us that he can't take care of the now 6month old baby left behind by his late wife. We spoke to Favour-Enewa Adah Paul Thatagatugyer to help us adopt the child into her orphanage and she obliged. The child will be returning to makurdi with us along side the father, so that formal handover to the orphanage will be arranged. We loved you Mrs Rose Akaaer but God almighty loves you more. Continue to Rest In Peace, amen. Source; https://www.nationalhelm.co/2018/06/woman-who-was-burnt-along-with-her-3-months-baby-dies-in-benue-photos.html
