A young man has narrated his sad experience after losing his leg following an accident which happened to him at a police checkpoint in Delta state. It was gathered that the gospel instrumentalist identified as Paul Kpema, an Itsekiri by tribe was booked to perform in a program at Otefe Oghara of Delta state before the unfortunate incident and accident befell him while trying to sort out the police officers. According to him, he said; . We packed our musical instruments and we were heading to Otefe that day, I was to perform in a program that day, Just before the bridge connecting Mosogar to Oghara, police officers flagged down the bus we boarded, but being that the commercial driver knew one of the police men, he made a sign to him that he will see them on his return . But as he drove on, he observed that the team of police officers were chasing us with their hilux van, so the driver packed and the police officers highlighted from their van and approached us. They now requested for the documents of the bus, but the driver told them it has expired, as usual you know our Nigerian Police, they requested for N10,000 before they can let us go. The driver said he has no money on him, so they ordered myself and the conductor down and asked one of their Colleague to enter the bus and instructed the driver to reverse the bus, that they are arresting the bus, so the driver did as he was told, he drove on and crossed the bridge, then reversed as if he was coming back to Sapele and was told to park opposite where we were standing. Seeing that there was no headway, I volunteered to offer them N3000, because I was getting late already for the program, myself and the conductor crossed the road to meet them were they parked, while I was bringing out the money from my pocket standing at the back of our own bus a car that lost control while trying to overtake a trailer in full speed came and hit my two legs, on the spot my right leg cut off from my body, before I knew it I saw myself at Delta State University Teaching Hospital Oghara (DELSUTH)... The Nigerian Senate has resolved to investigate the circumstances surround the death of Miss Linda Angela Igwetu, the NYSC Corper who was allegedly shot by a Police Officer two nights ago. Senator Atai Aidoko, citing Order 42 and 52, raised the issue, stating that while on her way home with her friends, the corper was shot and rushed to Garki hospital, Abuja but was not treated because they needed a police report. Commenting on the Motion, the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, said: “There are two issues here. One, is how could this have happened? How could the officer mistakenly or otherwise have shot in such a way that led to this young ladies death? “Secondly, we have passed this Compulsory Treatment and Care of Victims of Gunshots Act, and the President assented to it on the 30th of December 2017. “Until we start holding people accountable to these kinds of incidents, they will not stop. What is the point of us passing a Bill, and the President assenting to it, then it becomes law, and still, people will decide that they will not treat a patient. “Is it that they are not well-informed? Is it that they were not aware that such a law exists? There are a number of issues that we need to address. “Every Nigerian life is important. Especially young ones that are just about to start their own lives and careers. This is a loss that could have been avoided.” The Senate resolved to: Mandate its Committee on Youth and Sports to investigate the death of the NYSC Corper; mandate its Committee on Health to investigate the non-treatment of the patient, and; mandate its Committee on Police Affairs to investigate the cause of the incident. All three Committees have been directed to report back to the Senate in 2-weeks.
