In 2023 for example, Oyo state wage bill was 7.2bn monthly. Let’s say they increase from 30k to 100k, it means the wage bill will roughly shoot up to 16bn for example. It’s not going to increase 3 fold like that due to the calculation being used.

For Feb 2024, Oyo received 10bn net allocation from FAAC. So that means the 16bn wage bill will be up to 50% more than their monthly FAAC.

And I am even being generous with the 16bn wage bill.

These people are just doing Tinubu's dirty job to destroy LP!! cheesy

If they allow Peter Obi leaves to join Atiku, they have succeeded in creating more work for Tinubu!
They should know that if LP's votes were not shared with Atiku in the last election, we would not have this disaster of a government we have now!! cool
They should not allow this to backfire oh!
Thank God you people are finally admitting your monumental error! Now the question is when you say join forces with Atiku as what? You expect Atiku to step down for Obi and work for the man who derailed his lifelong ambition? Bear in mind Atiku can’t be VP again and why would he waste his energy to make the man who denied him his life ambition a president with nothing in it for him? Or you expect Obi to swallow his pride and be Vp to Atiku in PDP the party he said has a culture of criminality? You expect PDP delegates to vote for Obi as presidential candidate?

The error caused by lack of foresight mixed with ego was made in 2022 and as far as Atiku and Obi are concerned the door is shut for good, the opportunity is gone!

Even if they manage to form an alliance, it is people inside PDP that will sabotage them. It is not in the interest of northern governors in PDP like bala Mohammed for example to support Atiku or Obi in 2027 because they know if they wait till 3031 they can be president, similarly it is not in the interest of the collective northern politicians to vote for OBI because they don’t want a repeat of Jonathan as Obi will rightly want to run for 2 terms.

Another misinformation. Every worker in the public sector both at the federal and state level is guaranteed consequential adjustment. Did you not read in the minimum wage act that no other employer apart from the federal government has the right to negotiate minimum wage with their employees once it's signed into law?

In the private sector, a lot of businesses are exempted to the extent that only a very few are left paying it ,and those ones are large scale enterprises who have the capacity to pay their lowest paid staff more than minimum wage.

So in the private sector it's almost like nobody is paying it Most small and medium scale enterprise in Nigeria have less than 25 staff in their payroll and because of this are exempted. Many will not lose their jobs as you assume.
Nobody is “guaranteed” consequential adjustment because there is no law that mandates it. It happens by normal practice or by implication that is why you often see other unions going on strike once a minimum wage has been approved.

You are contradicting yourself. I have stated it many times that Labour is not fighting for the Nigerian worker, they are fighting for Government workers. I have also stated that the majority of Nigerian workers will not be affected by the Law and that if they are forced to, many will lose their jobs because the real economy cannot afford it. I say forced to because who is obligated to implement the minimum wage is dependent on the wording of the new law. That the old law only included OPS above 25 staff does not means the new law will. Already Today NGF has stated 70k is their limit and OPS has said 60k is their limit.

Take a step to pause and think before you post because I don’t see what you are posting in all these multiple posts that is fundamentally different from what I posted.

The bottom line is our issue is low productivity. You cannot pay what you don’t have and your cannot live a life you have not earned. It will catch up with you. No food for lazy man is not just a joke we say, it is the reality of life. Either way you slice it. It is either the economy cannot pay the minimum wage increases even if a small section can or they mandate and enforce it and it leads to inflation and or job loses. It boils down to the fact that the GDP per capita which paints a picture of a people with low productivity.

PS: I never said I worked part time, what I said was I had 2 full time minimum wage jobs. 2) I got to know about which class of workers are covered under the minimum wage via a guest on TVC……video below. If you made such a post I never saw it. I don’t read every post on Nairaland only those who come to my attention because they appear on my mention. The only thing I will admit to is that as an employer myself, I didn’t actually know the full details of law until I saw her interview and checked.

Take this and rest whether you agree or not. I am tired of rehaarshi f the same thing over and over for the last week.

Instead of joining other ignorant people to spread misinformation, why not tell people the truth as it concerns minimum wage in the private sector in Nigeria .

You already know what's contained in the minimum wage act which has exempted people like him with only 4 drivers in his employ from paying minimum wage in Nigeria.

So why trying to live in denial here

The SGF is either ignorant of the law or his lying to ridicule labour. That's it.
I suggest you take your own advice and read the minimum wage act. If you did you would realize that the law Doris not even apply to the majority of Nigerian workers in the first place. Labour is fighting for government workers and even in that space they are really only fighting for federal workers.

Again read the law. I have posted the relevant sections numerous times over the last few days. The law does not apply to majority of workers and is not enforceable by law to the majority of employers.

Either way the SGF is right or at least is sending a message about the real Nigerian situation. He has 4 drivers because the government is paying for it. Government workers represent only 0.6% of the population. If he were a private citizen he wouldn’t employ that many drivers.

Either way whether as a public official or as a private citizen, nobody needs 4 drivers. This is the point I have been making that we are unproductive and many people owe their jobs to lack of productivity and low wages. If we are forced to be productive or wages are forced to rise, many jobs will go because there simply isn’t the money In the economy in both the private and public sector.

Politics › Re: Minimum Wage: I Can't Afford To Pay N100000 To Each Of My 4 Drivers - SGF Akume by casualobserver: 7:41pm On Jun 06, 2024
This is exactly what I have been saying.

1) many people have jobs only because wages are low, if they rise they will lose their jobs. It is one thing for government to pay it is another for individuals, small businesses and even large companies in the private sector to pay.

2) salaries are low because several people do the job of one person. Our productivity is very low. If one person did the job well as he is supposed to do, a man wouldn’t need 4 drivers and his only driverwould earn the wages that he is currently sharing with 4 people. A man does not need 4 drivers. I don’t care who you are. Worst case he employs 2 instead of 4 and doubles both their salaries as it should be.

I have said it many times in the last few days the problem of wages I. Nigeria is a problem of lack of productivity where it takes 2,3,4,5,6 people to do the job of 1 person. I have said it also that when all is said and done many people will lose their jobs and they will realize Labour wasn’t fighting for them.

That said all this we are talking both minim wage and consequential adjustment only applies to certain workers. I would say only federal workers are guaranteed. Many states will not pay. As for private sector, many will lose their jobs as a result or it won’t apply to them in the 1st place.

When president Roosevelt was elected in 1932 in the middle of the great depression, he immediately too proactive measures to address the economy. Within 100 days in office the President and the U.S. Congress passed into law a package of legislation designed to help lift the troubled nation out of the Depression. He implemented a programme called the new deal.
He successfully navigated the US out of economic crisis.
What action has president Tinubu done outside the old tried and tested failed IMF politicies of increase taxes, remove subsidies and privatisation? What plans and strategies has he put in place to stimulate the economy?

See the screenshot below to learn about how President Roosevelt tackled the Great Depression.
My friend you are a big fooool! Trying to educate me about Roosevelt? I sang the star spangled banner and the marine anthem every day for 3 years as a child and a clown who has never been on an international flight wants to. Educate me about American history? Again I stress this is the problem with you half baked, poor educated, incapable of independent thinking, read and regurgitate mor0ns. America is not Nigeria. Their people have a different mindset, they are patriotic, they are productive and they control the world money system etc. you try and say because America did this or that , therefore let’s do it, while it sounds good in theory, you will kill your economy.

Part of the problem we face as a nation are economic leaders and Uncle Toms who copy the west.

1). We sold all our govt owned enterprises because the west said privatization is the way to go. We copy them and say govt has no business in business. We forget that all these companies, British airways British rail, Lufthansa etc etc were all built with government money. We sold all oursljon creating companies because we have buf00ns like you who said “this is what Britain did” and lost all the jobs. Now we have no jobs, no Nigerian airways, no Nitel, no NNSL etc etc etc. A thinking man knows there are some large scale businesses that in a developing country, only government can create. And while it is true that govt are bad managers, what you do is not stop creating businesses or sell the ones you have but either hand over management to professionals or sell off majority stakes to professionals.

2) the America you are trying to copy owns the financial system and the world reserve currency they can borrow as much as they want, they will just print more money to pay…how did we fare when Buhari printed money?

Use your head! This is not economics exam, this is real life. The economics books you study, though some principles are universal were not designed for you. This is something you Uncle TOms should realize. There is a reason why there is a branch of economics called development economics. These books you are reading that is causing you to spew thrash are not designed for your circumstances.

Can you imagine this m0ron trying to. Educate me about the new. Deal. Jesus wept!!!

I have told you not to burst blood vessels trying so hard so appear enlightened, you are not dealing with your typical Nairalander. Where your knowledge, education, travel and exposure ends is where mine starts.

Only a foolish man says this is what that person did without taking into account his own circumstances. This is how we have adopted western democracy that results is brainless people deciding the future of the intelligent with their votes. You forget the countries you copied the democracy from are largely homogenous and more importantly educated. Tell me a large poor country that has ever pulled itself out of poverty via democracy.

This looking to the west and copying them is a big part of our problem. We are creating people who are unable to think, just copy!!!

Please tell me where FDR doubled or tripled wages of workers? 1diot!! And please tel me how you expect a government to get money for infrastructure projects what will create jobs for the currently unemployed by rewarding unproductive workers with jumbo salary increases? When you are citing America and their path to development also don’t forget to cite that citizens bought war bonds or that the same FDR confisticated everybody’s Gold AT BELOW MARKET PRICE to pay for the new deal. I bet you didn’t know that did you? Mr let me tell you about FDR…ode! I warned you not to respond to me at it was obvious you are an intellectual lightweight but you went to do research feeling cool talking about new deal and now I have exposed you for not even knowing about the new deal. Once again know your level. Because our paths cross on Nairaland does not mean our paths can ever cross in real world. You don’t have what it takes to engage me in this type of subject.

No nation builds without sacrifice, the repercussions of the sacrifices Nigerians don’t not want to make is coming home to roost and trust we it does not matter what the Minimum wage is increased to, prices will catch up to it and we are back to square 1 except now govt will have less money to even pay the salaries. LDaVinci:
It is a pity you had to write such a long write up only to fail so spectacularly. And here's why your logic fails:

The income of the FG is not the same as the GDP of Nigeria. And the number of FG workers is not the same as the population of Nigeria. What you will have to do, to assess the productivity of FG workers would be to divide the total income of the FG by the number of FG workers. And the result will be a very different proposition from GDP per capita.

Now if one were to take a look at the 2024 Budget and assume a total Federal Revenue of 27 Trillion and divide that by approximately 1.2 million FG workers, one derives a figure of N22.5 Million as being the output of each employee taken on the basis of an average.
You are daft! The income of the FG is where it gets the money to pay its workers. The GDP of NIgeris is where the rest of NIgeria get the money to pay their workers. The minimum wage applies to all eligible Nigerians but FG workers are only 0.6% of the population of the country. I hope you are already beginning to see the stupidity of your post before I land.

99.4% of Nigerians get their wages, salaries and income from the GDP of Nigeria. That is why the GDP and by extension GDP per capita of Nigeria is the only determining factor in a sustainable wage. The minimum wage Osifo aand Ajaero are fighting for will not trickle down to you because it is not the government that pays your salary. All it will do induce inflation for the rest of you whose employers cannot match those wages because you are unproductive. If salaries increase and output doesn’t what does that mean? Is that not more money chasing the same number of goods?

In all of this don’t forget that by law the minim wage does not apply to agric workers, casual workers, commission sales staff, part time workers, daily rate workers, private businesses with less that 25 employees. Most Nigerians fall in to this category. So if you think they glare fighting for you, have a rethink. They will increase their salaries, yours will not increase, they will induce inflation for you.

Finally govt is not a business, it collects money for distribution not to 1.2 million workers but to 200m Nigerians. The 1.2 million workers are employed to help the government provide social services for the 200m. If you had any brains even your own calculations would have told you that the govt cannot really afford the minimum wage and their demands are unrealistic. Are you saying govt should not build any roads, schools or hospitals? I know it is unrealistic and just bargaining but do you know that the 490k they are demanding is more than half the entire budget……for just 1.2m mostly indolent civil servants? We should take money meant for 200m people and give 1.2m mostly useless civil servants? Is that the brain you came to this world with?

Your fundamental error is thinking government revenues is a reflection of the output of its civil servants, it isn’t ….government revenues is a reflection of the taxes from the whole of Nigeria including the 99% that are not government workers, it also includes borrowings. This is why we say do not comment on matters you do not understand and when those who do are trying to educate you…keep quiet and learn.

Improve your thought process! This kind of thinking is why you are on minimum wage or earning less than your contemporaries.

Very good what you explained, but you should know that in Nigeria most business owners are not knowledgeable enough to know the exact number of workers to employ. They don't like consulting experts because they see it as a waste of money. And so, because of that the person that needs only 3 to maximize profits may employ more than that and end up not gaining much from his farm without understanding why . While the one that needs more than 3 ,may just employ 4 and also end losing in the long run.
The point I was trying to make and I hope I succeeded is that the Nigerian worker is poorly paid because he is inherently unproductive. That is the root cause of his poor wages. If you like use 10 workers to produce a barrel of oil, if you like use 2. The price of oil is the same in the market. Common sense dictates that the country where it takes 10 cannot earn as the country or company where it takes 5. In both cases the rice seller does not give discounts.

@teepain

I think casualobserver is forgetting some factors. Firstly, just like teepain said, most of the civil servants, the senators, most of the governors, even the president are not working. The entire public sector is overfilled with physical ghost workers. So yes, I think it's better to have some layoffs for livable wage and let the actual workers get productive with risk of losing their jobs.

Another factor is that in your example, the farmers are earning less than even the workers like a communist society. Nigeria is a capitalist society and the foreign and local investors earn X50000 their initial investment with no ceiling. Even Nigeria govt want to put small money in Nigeria and remove big money 😂😂 Nigeria govt will build inferior roads and then add tollgate.

The real discussion Nigerians and NLC should be having is MAXIMUM WAGE or INCOME TAX. With maximum wage, the profit from the organisations will be high and Nigeria like USA must implement the rule that you can't take profit out of Nigeria. Therefore, the investors will be forced to reinvest in other NEW businesses to make more wages which means new jobs. And that's how you improve productivity and reduce inflation.
With income tax increment, Nigerian govt will only misuse the money so I'd rather have maximum wage, leave the money in the hands of investors.
With due respect, this is why I am an advocate for teaching in our local languages. It is amazing how people read but fail to comprehend! Do I have to spell it out to you? In my example of a farm with 10 workers and one with 3 with the same output is it not what you highlighted above that I am saying? Clearly the 10 workers are not working all the time and are peeing paid to be idle! Again do I need to spell it out. I really get irritated when people can’t understand what they read and then waste my time by quoting me to grab my attention.

Do you don’t understand the meaning of productivity? What are you saying what am I saying?

Jesus wept!,

As far as your other drivel, make up your mind whether you want a capitalist society or a communist society. You want to reduce the salary of the man who took risks to create a business that provides the opportunity for you to have a job or the man who studied hard to acquire highly in demand skills? Some people deserve to be on minimum wage just based on the level of thinking , the level of intelligence!

People are paid according to their value. A man who works to increase his value has the right to earn to earn as much as he wants, a man who doesn’t improve himself, learns no skills, spends all his spare time in church deserves minimum wage. This kind of thinking is why our national productivity is low.

Clearly you are also very naive, if you feel someone will invest in Nigeria if he can’t take his profit out…because his ancestors were Nigerian or what? Honestly the level of thinking of some of you is so pedestrian!

You are over simplifying one aspect of economics - Microeconomics and ignoring all the other aspects, and then ignoring completely Macroeconomics.
If you study the kaynesian school of thought, it advocates for spending your way out of recession. Government has to pump money into the economy through which ever means - Borrowing, wage increase, etc to stimulate economic activities. How do you think the US was able to survive the great depression of 1929? How do you think Europe was able to recover their economies less than 10 years after WWII? They pumped money into the economy. Not just into the economy, but into infrastructures and production
Here we are doing the reverse. Any money pumped into the economy is quickly swallowed up by few political elites and is even taken out to other economies.

The average Nigerian civil servants (those gainfully employed) gets to work by 9 am, chats away with his/ her colleagues for at least 1 hour per day, fiddles with his phone while at work for some considerable amount of time, some would find time to negotiate for wares from various sellers, do some work and by 3pm they are rounding up for the day.

Effectively, I am not sure that any Nigerian civil servant puts in more than 3-4 hours of effective work per day. Hence, the low productivity. This extends somewhat to the private sector and the elected officials. This explains why Nigeria is in this mess that we are in. To get ahead of this malaise, we have to find a way to get government officials to court their excess and unjustifiable renumeration, both official and official ones. And we all have to reconsider our contributions to the national purse and do better than we currently do.
This is what I have been saying. Refineries have been shut for over 10 years producing nothing and collecting salaries. These same workers you can’t sack contribute nothing to GDP and lower the GDP per capita of every other worker but they are the ones striking!! You never see them striking to protest the non working refineries.

It cuts across board.
