Justiceganduje: If you engaged you thinking cap you will realize that minimum wage increases will lead to job loses. It is one thing for government to pay the minimum wage, private sector will just lay off workers if the minimum wage is beyond their means. I said in a previous post, there are many people who have a job only because the minimum wage is so low. There is a level of wage increase where your employer starts asking if I really need this guy. Trust me many people will lose their jobs if the minimum wage goes above N100k. 1 Like |

Islie: The root of all this is that all Nigerian Kings lost their kingdoms to the British. After which they became employees of the British Govt to help administer the locals because the land was great but they did not have enough personnel. On gaining independence, the Nigerian govt inherited all employees of govt including traditional Kings. You are only a “King” in Nigeria because the govt says so because your their forefathers lost their kingdoms and the governor is your employer. 3 Likes |

I agree and if you read my posts on the matter I said it was only a ruse to obtain an ex-parte order which by definition is temporary and will expire on the 3rd June. It’s just skulduggery. Either 1) the ex parte order will expire 2) the other party will appear and they will have to prove the non existent human rights violation or 3) the case will be dismissed for lack of jurisdiction if they try to delve into chieftancy or traditional ruler mattters. 1 Like |

Akpakomiza2: Federal high court, which is where the injunction was obtained and the subject under discussion. You are just being pedantic because you know what I meant. Kingship matters are strictly state matters. The federal court of appeal and Supreme Court only come in as appellate courts for the state high court . A federal high court has no jurisdiction over Kingship matters, they don’t exist under federal law. Any matter relating to kingship has to originate at the state high court. 1 Like |

legallysly: He doesn’t, the matter presented before him was human rights. On that basis he granted ex parte injunction. Ofcourse ex-parte means the other party was not present. Ex parte injunction either expires or other party appears and states his case. At which point the case is thrown out because federal court has no jurisdiction over kingship matters and there is no rights violation. 1 Like |

Akpakomiza2: They won’t get anywhere. An exparte order is a tool of abuse of court process by rascal lawyers. Ex-parte means the other party is not present. Exparte orders are temporary orders pending the presence of the other party to present his side of the story. For example I am your landlord, you haven’t paid rent for years, you go to court to obtain an exparte order prevent me your landlord from entering my property. The judge will ask why? You claim I violated your human rights, the judge grants you the order pending when he can hear from me. The exparte order either expires or I come to court and the real matter will be heard or dismissed. In the case of Kano, either the exparte expires or when they get to court it will be struck out because there is no human rights violation and kingship matters is not under the jurisdiction of a federal court. 4 Likes |

It was also an ex-parte order (I am sure you don’t know what that means) It will be thrown out. No federal law or the constitution recognizes the existence of any King in Nigeria. 1 Like |

Akpakomiza2: Federal courts have no jurisdiction over traditional/customary matters. They are not recognized under Federal law. You can only preside over something that is under your purview. If you knew what you were talking about, I was expecting you to say the injunction was made based on violation of human rights which is a federal matter. But that was just legal skulduggery to obtain an injunction which will not hold water. If you knew the law you would have mentioned the above. 3 Likes |

I have said this many times. Nigerian Kings ceased to exist in the real sense when the British conquered them. They are just ceremonial employees of state governments. They are not even recognized in the constitution. I love SLS but he forgot he is an employee, forgot the Kano empire of his ancestors is no more, got involved in the politics of his employer. With due respect to our traditional kingdoms, they were conquered by the British, once your Kingdom is conquered that is the end, you serve your new master. But for the fact that the British did not have enough personnel to administer the country and kept them in place as a form of indirect rule, they wouldn’t exist today. 2 Likes |

carzeem1: Did you read what I wrote? With due respect this mentality is why we are where we are. We can’t afford subsidies but we say no you can’t increase price of petrol so we continue until we are broke and there is no money for subsidies. Meanwhile money for roads we have burnt in smoke. We can’t afford cheap electricity but we strike if they dare increase price of electricity meanwhile the people that generate the electricity we can’t pay them and in the end we don’t have reliable electricity. We do t want to pay for university tuition but somehow we expect good lecturers to want to work in a university where he is poorly paid and be motivated. I mean what is wrong with us? I have offered the solution. Nigerians are paying tens of thousand of pounds and dollars to obtain university degrees abroad. Such people will jump at the opportunity to pay even N5m in Nigeria if they know the degree will be of good quality. If the true cost of a degree is say N2m, you can charge them 3,4,5m and they will gladly pay. The excess will be used to fund the education of deserving poor students who can’t afford the fees. It is because of your insistence on paying N60k that those who know the value of a good degree have abandoned Nigerian public universities and the result is you pay N60k for a degree but the degree is worthless. Govt has no money shout all you like and the people who have money to subsidize your education (those paying thousands abroad) are not going to join you in a University with N60k fees. If the cost of good university education is 2m charge 4m. Those who are paying 20m abroad will gladly bring their children back and pay. The extra 2m will cover the fees for a poor student. 1 Like |

Lumarstone: The right level of minimum wage is around N50-80k. Many Minimum wage workers do not know the reason they have a job today is because they earn M30k or N40k, inadequate as that may be to get by. The minute minimum wage rises above N60k many more people will be made unemployed. People will start asking themselves do I really need 4 security guards instead of 2, do I need a houseboy and a maid, do I need someone at the entrance to my supermarket whose only job is to tear receipts. Etc etc Be careful what you wish for. The reason why Nigeria’s minimum wage cannot take a worker to the end of the month is because the Nigerian worker is unskilled, inefficient and unproductive. Even plumbers, carpenters, bricklayers and cooks, we prefer people from Benin republic who are more productive l. You need multiple Nigerian workers to do the job of 1 person and so they share the salary. If a Nigerian worker was more productive he would earn more because his employer would not need to employ multiple people to do the same task. You say N200k is not enough, when you lose the job you have now that pays you N40 or 50k because your employer cannot afford to play you N200k, then you will understand the plight of those who have no jobs and appreciate that at least your 40k job did something for you. 3 Likes |

Education / Re: Nigerian Students In Teesside University Ordered To Leave UK by casualobserver: 1:54pm On May 22 |
It is the people that refuse to pay more than N60k for university tuition back home that are causing all this nonsense. If tuition was allowed to rise to N1-2m back home, Most of the money and students going into western universities will stay in Nigeria, our lecturers would be paid better, the quality of our degrees will rise, our forex will be preserved and the poor student will actually get a quality degree instead of his worthless N60k degree. A portion of the money from the fees of those who can afford to pay N1-2m will be used to subsidize the poor just like our foreign fees subsidize home students abroad. But this will never happen because they will protest. 3 Likes |
Business / Re: We Have No Magic Wand, Tackling Inflation Will Take Time—Cardoso by casualobserver: 12:16pm On May 22 |
Treadway: Inflation is relative. When Nigerias inflation was 14-17% for example, the west had an average inflation of 2%. Now it is about 3% in the west and to them it is a big deal enough to derail their economies. For us 3% is paradise because we have never had 3% inflation in my life time and I am no spring chicken. During Nigeria’s best economic boom since 1999 our lowest inflation rate was 7.8%. Western economies will collapse if their inflation gets to 6%….it almost did when it recently got to 5% which is the battle they have been fighting for 3 years and still have not succeeded (they are still @3%). Their target is 2%. In the US inflation is 3%, car sales have fallen, house sales have fallen, basic food items have skyrocketed. And this is just 3% inflation. We have 33% inflation but a growing economy, yet the US @ 3% inflation is tethering on the edge of stagflation…..assuming you know what that means! They are a debt economy, we are a cash economy. In the west just 1% change in inflation can be the difference between a man losing his house and having his car repossessed. It is not so In Nigeria because we pay cash for every thing. Interest rates and inflation work differently in Nigeria and the west. So they are not like for like. Therefore Mr wannabe Ignoramus economist, I suggest If you don’t understand economics do not comment on matters of economics just because you can pull up figures from the internet. You have to have understanding of the figures. This is not a beer parlour matter, you need to understand the meaning of the figures you are quoting and you clearly do not. 3% inflation is enough for Americans to cut down on basics like milk. 1 Like 1 Share
