wirinet:Like I said it is a chicken and egg situation. It is robbing from Peter to pay Paul. Let me give you an example to illustrate: You have a farm of 1 acre with 10 workers. Your competitor farms the same 1 acre with 3 workers. The yield and therefore the income from 1 acre is the same. The farmers in farm1 are naturally poorly paid because there are 10 of them doing the job of 3 people in farm 2 for the same output, let us assume 1 acre of land can only produce a fixed amount of maize. Don’t forget the price of the maize for both farms is the same in the market….. a customer is not going to pay the farmer a higher price because he has 10 workers, if anything the price of the products in farm 2 will be cheaper because his costs are lower but for the sake of this example let us assume they both get the same price. Remember I mentioned GDP earlier? The Output per worker (productivity) in farm 1 is lower than farm 2. If the both sell maize for N100,000, Farm 1 with 10 workers has an output per capita or productivity of N10,000 per worker whereas in farm 2 it is N33,000 per worker. Therefore it makes sense that a worker in farm 2 is paid N20,000 for his work totaling N60,000 in salaries, let’s say materials cost N30,000 leaving a profit of N10,000 for the farmer. He is happy to earn just 10,00 from that farm because he knows his workers are efficient and do all the work. In contrast farm 2 has the same materials and input costs of N30,000, all he has left to pay the 10 workers is N70,000. Assuming he doesn’t even make a profit, the worker in farm 1 cannot earn more than N7,000. Now the farmer must make a profit otherwise he will shut down the farm. So he takes a lower profit of N5,000, meaning all that is available to pay his workers is N65,000, meaning the income of the farm 1 worker based on his productivity is N6,500. Imagine farm 1 workers saying they want a salary increase to N10,000, what will happen if he agrees? The farm will close down because the output or GDP of the farm cannot sustain that level of income due to their low productivity. It will mean they have costs of N130,000, income of N100,000 and loss for the farmer!!! That is why I keep emphasizing the importance of our GDP per capita of N150,000, I.e the average output of all Nigerian workers from the lowest to the highest…it cannot sustain a minimum wage above N70k without a drastic increase in productivity. Increasing purchasing power without increasing productivity is just kicking the can down the road. If you increase the purchasing power of the 10 workers in farm 1 and they are still only producing 100,000 worth of maize you are just going to induce inflation because their output is still the same and the prices of the things they buy will go up because those workers have more money but you the farmer will incur debt or go bankrupt and so in the end you will be forced to close down the farm. More money in the hands of workers and same level of goods (output) = inflation. The solution is either 1) to reduce the number of workers for the same output if that is the only farm you have 2) leave salaries as they are for the same output or 3) find another acre of land and move 5 workers to the new farm in which case you can double their wages because their productivity has doubled. Bottom line Nigeria has a worker productivity problem not a purchasing power problem. The poor purchasing power is a result of low productivity. Increasing purchasing power for the same level of productivity is a recipe for inflation. But most importantly, just as the farmer cannot increase salaries beyond the income of his farm, you cannot increase salaries in a country beyond the output of your country. Again this is why I keep emphasizing the importance of our GDP per capita, it is the value of the output of the average Nigerian. You can’t give what you don’t have!!! If 3 workers can produce N100,000 in farm output at another farm, you solve the salary problem of the 10 workers by sacking 5 and creating another farm for the sacked 5. The output increases to N200,000 and you can pay all better wages. The problem is the same workers in farm 1 who want salary increase will down tools at the farm if you suggest it. |
wirinet:It is a chicken and egg situation. The economic output of Nigeria is N150k per head a month. The problem is not purchasing power. The problem is output. I stress like I always do that this 150k is not the output of the minimum wage worker this is the output of the average worker. How can you pay someone more than his economic output? In a country like the UK or the US. The economic output per head is multiple times the minimum wage. Our problem is not purchasing power, our problem is productivity aka low output of workers. So long as we continue to be a nation of unproductive workers, any wage increase will be swiftly gulped by inflation and we are back to square one. In fact we are heading backwards because with a GDP per capita of N150k a month, there is no money to pay these proposed wage increases. Civil servants will get their pay increases but expect massive job losses elsewhere. |
We are heading for the mother of all inflation, we saint seen nothing yet. Senior civil servants will start their own agitation, it means top civil servants, professors etc will start their own strike asking for 1m a month as traditionally 1:10 is the ratio of the minimum salary and the highest salary in the civil service. |

triplechoice:Like I said, anyone who thinks he is worth more than he is being paid is free to resign and rest his value in the market, there is no fight there. Many of you will realize how overrated you are. If you were worth more than you currently earn, you would be earning it already. You are where you are because that is what you are worth. If you don’t like that reality check seek to improve your value in the market place. Good. Night! |
triplechoice:You need to understand English. Average is not minimum. Look my friend, the bottom line is this: if anyone feels he is worth more than he is being paid he should resign and test his worth with other employers. This is not slave Labour or forced Labour. If you feel you are worth more than you are being paid please please please feel free to leave your “exploitative” employer. Is it by force you work for someone who is paying you less than you feel you are worth? Abi kilode? Them force you? |
triplechoice:The figures do not lie and the evidence says otherwise. The GDP per capita of the average Nigerian worker is N150k a month. An avearahe worker is a graduate with a few years experience according to civil service salary scale. It means that a minimum wage worker likely only contribute economic Labour or work to the value of the 30k he earns. It is across board. From the refinery worker collecting salaries for over a decade but has not refined a single barrel of oil to the typical Nigerian professor in a government university earns 250-400k. Ask that professor how many research papers he has produced that are cited by his international peers? Then you start to understand why he is paid so portly. If he was actually worth the title professor he wouldnt be working for a federal university. Argue with yourself but the figures do not lie. That’s the beauty of stats and measuring things, it removes the emotions and brings the realities home. |
Syber:Looks to me like you are overcharging your batteries. Your batteries are 4X 220ah but In reality most of these 220Ah are 200Ah. Charging rate should be .2C = 40A, worst case 44A. 4OA x 48V = 1920W. You are charging at .3C. |
jaxxy:We ask some dumb questions sha. |
DeOTR:The bold sums it up Agree on all counts. When I first got to england despite being a graduate, I had 2 full time minimum wage jobs as a security guard and at macdonalds. After finishing 12 hours of standing, I will go and do macdonalds where there is not a second of rest. I did what I had to do to improve myself. In Nigeria, you are a minimum wage worker you earn 30k or less and you have time to go to church for overnight vigil and revival? We are not serious |
DeOTR:The annoying thing is these people mostly are unskilled and have a bad attitude and poor work ethic. You would think that common sense would tell them that the best way to get a salary increase is to work so hard to get noticed and make themselves indispensable. |
triplechoice:I didn’t read all you wrote but let me tell you a basic principle in emplotlyer employee relations. If you feel your employer is exploiting you, you are free to quit and find another job. It is not slavery, it is not forced Labour. You likely can only get what you get because that is what your productivity and skill set (or lack there of) is worth in the open market. Like I said you are free to quit. You have a sense of entitlement. Nobody owes you a job or 3 square meals, you earn it by the value of your work. If 30k is all anyone is prepared to pay you, then get a second job. Or go and work for your father’s company where you can be idle all day and get a salary that is comfortable. I have repeated this many times: the reason why most employers are only willing to pay minimum wage workers so little is 1) they are unproductive…you need 3,4,5 to do the job of 1 person so the salary that should go to 1 person is shared amongst them. As a Nigerian business you are competing with imports from other countries with productive workers not workers who spend their day singing and playing praise songs. In the end the customer does not care whether The employer paid you and the 3 other unproductive workers he has to employ N100k each for every 1 worker his competitor abroad does. He is only interested in the price of the product. |
kelvindj98:Most of them Will end up suffering from the effects of the new minimum wage because most of them don’t know the minimum wage law does not even cover them. It does not apply to employers with less than 25 staff, agric workers, contract staff, part time workers, etc. majority of employees fall into the excluded category. |
triplechoice:It is not exploitation if the law does not mandate that they comply with the minimum wage. The vast majority of workers in Nigeria (over 90%) do not fall under the law and it has been So they will continue to be paid way below the minimum wage. They won’t benefit from it but their cost of living will rise due to the inflationary effects of the minimum wage. That is my point. Read about the Effect of the 100% Udoji award of the 1970s. Govt workers got 100% salary increase, In anticipation prices started rising in the end there wasn’t much benefit for the rest of the country only perhaps govt workers. On the contrary prices went up for everyone else. |
Nigerian journalists are so mediocre. In all of the story no mention of what is being mined, why are you a journalist? |
mbahdi:The irony is that many people supporting Labour do t realize whatever minimum wage is agreed will not trickle down to them and will cause inflation. To start with (see section 4 below) minimum wage law exempts employers with less than 25 staff, agric workers, contract workers, part time workers and daily rate workers. It applies only to government and organized private sector workers with 25+ staff strength. So all this wahala for majority of Nigerians nothing will change. Long and short most people backing Labour will not see any benefits and will reap the negative consequences..inflation and job losses. Labour will tell you they are fighting for you they are not. In a nation of over 200m people only 1m are federal government workers and the majority of those are not on mimimim wage. If you don’t work for the federal govt and you are earning 30k, when all is said and done, after all this noise and wahala, you will look at your alert and it is still 30k…because all this was not for your benefit . Your employer would not be breaking the law because minimum wage does not apply to him. If you complain too much you will be sacked. By definition if you are on minimum wage you are easily replaced, your skillset if any is not scarce! The real issue like I have said many times is the lack of productivity of the Nigerian worker The salary of a Zamfara teacher who was earning N8000 is not suddenly going to go up to N60k+ . Where was Ajaero when it was N30k, they were paying 8k since 2019? Finally I should add, minimum wage anywhere in the world is not meant to take you home. Yes they say so but in practice it never does. You are not supposed to be comfortable on minimum wage or else you have no motivation to improve yourself and that is bad for any economy .

CuteNbad:Your mindset is poor. A man is poor first in his mind before he becomes poor in life. Fix your mind. What some of them make in deals is more than your misleading inflated figures. No need to invent lies. |
CuteNbad:Stupidity is when you believe their monthly allowance is N27m. Stupidity is believing they collect over N50m a year for accommodation. People are taking their annual allowance and passing it is monthly and you believe? At that point the problem is your stupidity. Are senators guilty of many excesses..yes but there are things you see and common sense must tell you this is not plausible. |
Benjamin4388:This is simple basic laws of life since time immemorial. A man eats what he sows, from the toil of your hands you shall eat. The real world does not care what the price of garri is in the market. What matters is what is the economic value of your abour or output? That is what determines what you are paid. I repeat for the umpteenth time, the average worker in Nigeria has an output of N150k a month. So you understand, a minimum wage worker under civil service structure is level 1, a graduate is level 4, a perm sec is level 16. So the average worker we are talking about is level 8, I.e a graduate with experience. Where then should a minimum wage worker fit it if a graduate with experience only has an economic output of N150k? These are facts not sentiment. What you people are suggesting is that the minimum wage worker should be subsidized for his inefficiencies and lack of productivity and we know what Al happens to subsidies in the end. Besides, where is the money to come from? You may not like my comments about religion but I am simply giving you one example why the output of the Nigerian worker is so low. |
ALCOHOLKILLS:Thats like someone claiming to be a lawyer and not understanding what tort is. Even the pure water hawker, the tomato seller, Jelili the mechanic understand input costs…including cost, output and economic value of labour. |
ALCOHOLKILLS:It is not bragging, it is reality check and I don’t care about your name. You are employed to sit at the exit of a supermarket and your job is to tear customers receipts on their way out. Even at that you are useless that customers have walked past you and you are calling them back ( we all experience this at supermarkets) how useless are you at tearing receipts that you are distracted and customers walk past you? They pay you 30k. You think you are hard to replace? 1 million Nigerians are queuing to replace you tomorrow if you dared to ask for salary increase because you will be sacked. That like it or not, is the story of the typical Nigerian minimum wage worker. His role requires no skill and he doesn’t do it well. If by chance a new minimum wage is introduced and enforced people like that will lose their jobs because no employer is going to pay anybody 70k just to tear receipts. Many people don’t realize the reason they even have a job is because their wages are 30k or whatever. Any higher and your employer starts to question whether he needs you. |
ALCOHOLKILLS:Truth hurts! There is someone doing a job earning 30k that will get sacked if he dares ask for a salary increase, yet there is someone doing the same job on 200k that his boss will pay him whatever he wants than have him leave. The difference is value. A rude awakening is happening in Nigeria on many fronts and many will abuse me for this but it is about time!!! |
ALCOHOLKILLS:Because you are only worth 30k. If you could get more you would. Others earn a lot more. There are drivers and cooks who earn 40k and there are those who earn 200k. If you could earn more you would leave and get a better job but you can’t leave because those who pay higher wages don’t like people with poor attitude to work or poor skill set. For every job paying 30k, there are people doing the same job are earning3,4,56 or more times for the same job whether you are a gardener, driver, teacher or Nurse. Why is it you can only get a job that will pay you 30k? Most Nigerians don’t want to accept the reality, you get plaid little because you offer little. |
Davidcorny:First of all I live in Nigeria. I am also an employer of Labour commercially and privately. So I talk from a position of knowledge and experience. Secondly, in Nigeria of the past there was work ethic…that has gone and a reason for that is Pentecostal Christianity and entitlement mentality. I have some minimum wage staff that I retain simply because I know they have families not because they bring any real value for what they do or don’t do. It’s only in Nigeria you pay someone you know doesn’t do anything because you. This is why I can say for a fact that many people will lose their jobs especially in the private sector if they dare ask for a salary increase because many employers just keep them on for emotional/benevolence and not economic reasons. I already gave you the example of my gardener. I wanted to sack him a few years ago because he useless. He used to be full time and earning now N50k a month, at the time he was on 40k a month. My wife persuaded me to keep him for 3 days a week and increase his salary at the time to N50k. I since found out he was only coming half days for only 2 days a week because he does other jobs on other days. Bottom line is he has 4 other jobs. At least he showed initiative. Others are spending their time in church praying and fasting. I am fine with that because like I said he is useless and I have people in the house who do the things he is supposed to do anyway but he dare not ask me for a raise. Let me tell you something about 95% of Nigerian minimum wage workers in my experience. They are mostly useless and not worth the little they earn. You have to be really useless to earn minimum wage in Nigeria. We retain them because the next one will be the same. You sack one the next one is equally or more useless. Every now and again one comes along you can’t afford to let go…..that’s the one you pay the big wages. I always tell them but they never seem to understand you are not a skilled worker. I can have 10 of you tommorow. So if you have no special skill seperate yourself from the crowd with your dedication to your job and when you do, whatever you ask your employer will give you. But you can’t come with entitlement mentality and wushu washy attitude to work and be demanding salary increase…Lori kini? Which work are you doing, what value are you adding to my life? It’s not just minimu wage workers, same with many graduates. |
gigfx:Please tell these people here at home. They think they can japa and continue their nonsense abroad. Abroad if they pay you £1, you will earn that £1. I am always amazed in Nigeria when I go to a supermarket or shopping mall and the staff are playing Christian music or music of any kind and dancing. That’s why they are on minimum wage that can’t take them anywhere. In fact I remember the day I went to order some furniture from a Lebanese, he told me he could get it done the next day. “But you know your people have to go to church”. It wasn’t a Sunday, his staff attend night vigil on fridays. You and I know that if it was in the Uk we’d happily stay and get paid time and a half or whatever…not Nigeria, they must attend vigil. Then there was the I went to cash and carry and the staff were playing Christian worship songs singing, I just walk out in disgust…I am a Christian myself. Somebody employed you to sell goods and a customer walked in needing attention instead your loud music was a turnoff and none of them even noticed me. These things happened about 10 years ago but it was when I knew religion has killed the Nigerian work ethic. These are the workers whose salaries can’t take them home. How can it, when someone employed you to sell his goods but you didn’t notice the customer because you were singing and dancing to loud music? Don’t let anybody tell you there are no well paying jobs in Nigeria. The problem is mediocre workers. |
gigfx:And that is my point, we have created a culture of entitlement and though they are not solely responsible, our pastors have contributed massively to it by encouraging miracles and prayer instead of work. That is why the economic contribution of the average Nigerian worker is N150,00k a month. If an average worker contributes 150k, how little is a minimum wage worker contributing economically? We are a very unproductive people, the reason why salaries are low is because it can take 3,4,5 people to do the job of 1 person so naturally the salary that should go to one person is shared. It is only in Nigeria you will employ someone whose only task is to tear receipts from customers exiting a supermarket…think about it…that in itself shows the Nigerian worker has so little economic value. That you can employ one just to tear receipts. Thank God you live in the Uk, do you see security men sitting down? Do you see workers in commercial and government establishments idling around doing nothing? Toh! Normally your salary should be less than your economic contribution as an employee. If you want to work in Nigeria, there is work, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise and those who deliver value get paid well precisely because most are useless and unproductive. Oh and by the way it is not the way we the old anthem generation were brought up. This religiousity and praying for miracles and favoir started with Pentecostal Christianity and that’s largely post 1990 phenomenom. |
Kobojunkie:The time they should spend doing a second job, they spend in church every day. They are the ones that will come to the only job they are lucky to have tired because they spent the night at Vigil. At least if you are tired because you have 2 jobs one will understand. I discovered my y security guard has 2 jobs, my gardener has like 5 ( he is supposed to come 2 times a week for the whole day but I let him do half days for the same pay so long as the job is done) And some entitled people feel they have a right to demand ridiculous wages. Lori kini? |
gigfx:I lived in the Uk for over 2 decades. I worked 2 full time jobs myself as a security and as a Mac Donald’s worker and you know how hard Macdonald’s work is.p if you have ever tried it or know someone who has and Uk security is not work where you sit down like these lazy nigggggers here. The problem with the Nigerian is they are lazy and entitled and have been conditioned to pray for everything instead of working. A minimum wage Nigerian will have a full time job and instead of getting another he will spend the time in church praying for miracles. Whatever your reason for doing 2 jobs is immaterial, the bottom line is your single job is not enough which is the point of the minimum wage worker in Nigeria. |
Paragon311:Stop spending your productive time in church doing vigil and making pastors richer with the small you have. Get a second job! Minimum wage workers abroad have 2 jobs to make ends meet. You have time to spend in vigil after work but you have no time to take a second job? |
press9jatv:Oga please stop quoting me unless you can answer the question. The topic of this thread is minimum wage. What is the economic output of a minimum wage worker if that of the average worker is 150k? When when tell poor people that pastors will lead them astray, the chickens are now coming home to roost….their productivity is low. When they spend time in church, vigil, revival etc….this is the result…low productivity. Now they want salary for work they have not done. Abeg don’t quote me with foolishness. How much is the economic output of a minimum wage worker. That is the basis for discussion not the price of bread or tomatoes. |
press9jatv:People answer questions nobody asked them when they don’t have answers to the question at hand. |
press9jatv:Typical Nigerian mindset of avoiding the issue by diverting to another issue. Thank God this is not a matter of opinion but fact. The economic output of the average Nigerian worker (aka GDP per capita) is less than N150,000 a month. Yes or no? If yes why does a minimum wage worker expect to earn anything close to the average worker, or put it another way why does a minimum wage worker feel entitled to reap from where he has not sown? From whose output shall we pay the unproductive worker? If no, then contradict my figures with your own figure. You want to debate politicians, create another thread, this thread is about minimum wage workers. |
