delishpot: Jesus was a Jew so were all his ancestors so owning slaves was allowed then and they did. Just like many African cultures allowed slavery too even the best amongst men owned slaves difference was, they treated them better and with fairness. It did not make slavery right but it helped those few lucky slaves to live in some peace and even regain freedom. Christianity started after Christ when the Jewish leaders and the politicians started persecuting Christ followers. That was when they tagged them Christians. No, they can not own another man. The Bible which is the word of God condemned killing, stealing, lying, fornication, adultery, even things as mundane as circumcision was discussed in the Bible. The Bible didn't condemn slavery. It even gave guidelines in how slave masters should relate with their slaves. The Bible was comfortable with slavery. If it wasn't show me a verse online that proves otherwise. |

It's like saying Nigerians are corrupt. It's called fallacy of generalization. What are you even on about? What was the predominant religion in the south, then? Christianity. What was the religion of the slave holders? Christianity Whose voice was heard the most trying to defend keeping slaves? Christian slave Masters. The Christians who were against it sure didn't make their voices heard. Go and read about it like I said, then we'll talk. |

GodsMopol: The law was giving to men with hard hearts.
1 Timothy 1:9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 1:10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
Matthew 19:7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? 19:8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
God might not be cool with it, but God had to put some measure in place so when the perfect comes, the imperfect would be put away
1Cor 13:10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
I would say man couldn't attain to perfection, it was a bigger standard, most of those laws were to bring them and or prepare them for the coming and arrival of Jesus. What shall I liken it to, its like a school, you would get to primary 5, but you need to be in primary 1,2,3 and 4.
Galatians 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
I wish am really explaining it as you need the answers The same Jesus said that he didn't come to abolish the law but to fulfill it. There are so many old testament laws that modern day Christian leaders want Christians to uphold. Particularly in the area of tithe and first fruit so, why don't they enforce the full old testament instead of being picky with which one to enforce? |

2 Peter 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
Its not the person that's writing that we regard but the Holy Ghost that moved them to write So, what you're saying in essence is that God was cool with Slavery in the Old testament but in the New Testament he changed his mind? If I'm not mistaken, there's a portion of the Bible that says God is not a man that he should repent. |

One of the reasons why the American Civil War was fought was that the Southern Christian fundamentalists wanted to hold on to their slaves because it's their God given right and they had numerous Bible passages to back them up like the ones quoted above. ScienceWatch: The geologic column was invented by evolutionists to fit an imaginary timescale for the evolution of all life on Earth. The problem is it doesn't exist anywhere in the world except the text books.
If the column really existed, it would nearly 100 miles deep! The deepest fossils we find are about 1 to 1.5 miles deep. One of the deepest holes ever dug was only about 5 miles. So how do they get 100 miles of strata layers?
By assuming evolution has happened and putting the various layers of the sedimentary rock in an evolutionary order. Then they use the geologic column to prove evolution! That's called circular reasoning. Where in you use the assumption of something being true to prove it's true. It's the same as saying "evolution is true because evolution is true". This concept has been falsified (the column showing animals to be extinct) by what is called living fossils. Are you speaking from a position of knowledge or are you just inferring? So, carbon dating was also invented to satisfy the evolution timeline? |

Wilgrea7: Jesus claimed to be the son of God.. the Messiah.. this is what he told his disciples... paul on the other hand being a strong jew, tried to use his knowledge of Judaism to define Christ... the Jews had 3 main sects.... Pharisees, Sadducees and Essenes... the essenes are not mentioned tho... contrary to what people think, the pharisees and the saducees didn't have a unified set of doctrines.. they had conflicting doctrines.. just that they had to team up against Jesus.. that didn't mean they agreed within themselves... they both had varying beliefs like on rituals, etc.. almost like the shia and sunni muslims today.. although they didn't fight or kill each other... my point is, converts from any of those two sects tend to understood Christ on the basis of their previous faith.. since their previous faith is highly connected to their present one... and that's what gave rise to the different beliefs on the divinity of Christ... it also gave rise to varying doctrines in the early church like the nature of the afterlife, grace, faith and works etc.. because these people(converts from the other sects) tended to interpret the words of Jesus based on their knowledge from their previous faith.. that's why even today u can see more than 20 interpretations on some bible verses All these claims you've made, are you speaking from a position of knowledge or are you inferring? Wilgrea7: his existence and his works are two different things bro.. the Jews labelled him a heretic.. so basically they wouldn't want any of his “glorious works" known.. his existence couldn't be hidden... they tried.. they killed d Christians.. even Paul z a testimony to that.. they didn't want the world to acknowledge who they termed a heretic.. when plans to erase traces of his existence failed, they went on to damage his identity by calling him a bastard son of a prostitute.. although Jews of nowadays know better than that I don't care about the Jews, I'm talking about the Romans, they were ruling the Jews when Jesus called himself the King of the Jews. It was considered as treason and he was sentenced to death because of it and some other things. Something that huge and significant must have been recorded by the Romans unless you're saying the Jews destroyed the records of the Romans. I also want to Thank you that this back and forth hasn't degenerated to name calling. This is the first time it's happening to me on Nairaland. Thank you. |

Wilgrea7: that's where you're wrong... there were basically 3 beliefs on the divinity of Christ
1.. he wad the God they worshipped (God of the old testament 2. he was the son of the God of the old testament 3.. he was of the same substance as God, definitely divine but not God himself
the early church fathers(before nicea) seemed to have this disagreement.. the council of nicea was what settled this... although some jews who converted(few) believed him to be a normal man or prophet sent by God... See, he existed, he had followers who built a movement around him, he must have told them if he was the son of God, God himself or any of his derivatives. So, those issues you listed up there wouldn't have cropped up. Each denomination had their own idea and ran with it which gave rise to those problems. That was the problem that planted the seed of doubt regarding his existence. exactly... if they wanted to formulate a story... Jesus would have a cool theme in the story... but they had to tell the story as it was.. He had a cool story. Immaculate conception, schooled the Pharisees at a young age, performed numerous miracles, rose from the dead. There should be records somewhere to prove his existence. The Romans kept very good records, Pontius Pilate and Herod were recorded, how come Jesus wasn't? |
Christianity Etc › Re: Decoding Jesus: Separating Man From Myth by CatfishBilly: 12:51pm On Mar 06, 2017 |
Wilgrea7: yes... i understand you... there is the possibility of Josephus's own being a fake.. i read an article on it few days ago... but it doesn't negate the existence of Jesus... the same history described the emergence of Christianity.. also, the jews hated Jesus... they didn't want anybody that claimed to be God or the son of God in their history.. earlier jews tried painting Jesus as a heretic and son of a prostitute... they didn't want people to recognize him.. that's why you don't see many Jewish historians writing about him... the gospel of Nicodemus(non canonical) confirmed it.. So, if the one of the books documenting the existence of Jesus could be adjudged to be fake, it really affects the credibility of the other books. |

Wilgrea7: Christianity started out as a sect of Judaism after the death of Christ... so u mean those jews just woke up and started believing in a myth?? i highly doubt that.. the popular claim is that the Jesus figure was created by the council of nicea.. that's wrong.. it was only his divinity that was settled there. Why would there be a need of the council since he existed and his divinity was glaring for all to see? i don't get.. please expatiate a lil bit... on the issue of scholars, it depends on their source of info... the message of Jesus is also a widely accepted subject.. the crucifixion was something that caused waves all through Judaism.. so its difficult to ignore... the essence of baptism wasn't necessarily to cleanse from sin... if it were, then people would be baptized and rebaptized every sunday.. What it means is that the story of the baptism and crucification are embarrassing to Jesus since he's a Godlike figure, so, why create embarrassing stories if they're not true? |

Wilgrea7: ancient mythology is full of such figures... yes i agree.. although upon research many (not all) of those claims are proven to be false... so in what way do you think Jesus copied from them? cuz his existence has been proven .. or is it the miracles or resurrection? Did Jesus the man exist? There's no proof beyond reasonable doubt. New Testament and Jesus Scholars have widely differing views, but they agree on 2 things. That Jesus was baptized by John and that he was crucified. These assumptions are based on the Criteria of embarrassment which posits that The inventors of Christianity need not invent the story of baptism since Jesus was born without sin and his being baptized by John placed John above him thereby embarrassing him and that there was no need to invent the crucicify him since it's an embarrassing death. Which is a faulty premise if you ask me. Apart from the Bible, Jesus was only captured by 2 other writers as per this article. This leaves huge rooms for doubt. |

Stick to the rules if you want machine to be always being a good condition. Comparing Mechanics and Machines is a faulty analogy. Humans suffer diseases due to a vast range of factors, including the sun (skin cancer), air and dust (asthma for those already sensitized), insects (mosquitoes and Malaria comes to mind), hereditary ( hypertension, heart disease) to mention but a few. It could be theorized that the mechanic built a not perfect machine and it's up to the mechanic to get more years out of the machine. There are some human factors that contribute to ailments, like smoking, obesity and the likes, but they don't work in isolation. They work with a "fault in the machine" to cause diseases. |

Ogbanje/Abiku are children who were believed to come from the spirit realm. Their job/function was to make life miserable for their parents by dying and getting born a thousand times over. It was so well known that books were written about this belief, most notably a poem by a Nobel Laureate. Sacrifices were made, oracles were consulted, family Liberations and Crusades were done all to no avail. With the advances in science however, it has been shown that those children died of common childhood illnesses like Malaria, Diarrheal diseases and most importantly, Sickle Cell Anaemia. With the advances in medical sciences including early diagnosis and prompt treatment of childhood illnesses, infant mortality has drastically reduced, leaving the concept of Ogbanje/Abiku in the past where it belongs. Science just did what all the prayers and sacrifices couldn't do. Abi any of una still get Ogbanje/Abiku for una family?
