I am a christian, but what I suspect is that it was Christians who went to government and said, if you are sponsoring Muslims on pilgrimage to mecca then we too want to be going to Jerusalem. The Muslim faith calls for pilgrimage, if the person is able (within their own means and not by government subsidy I'm sure), but what I see is the tit for tat blackmail that is destroying Nigeria. Why should we say we want our share of a bad idea? As someone else has already pointed out, the implications are that one day we will be paying for Mormons to go to utah, USA, and hare krishna to go to India. What Christians should have said from the beginning is that government should not ever finance the private faith of individuals.

Now is the government sponsoring evangelism (Christian spiritual pillar) the way Moslem journey to Saudi Arabia is being sponsored? We have successfully done evangelism without demanding from the government, we have expected government to spend such money on public needs, which is still part of evangelism.

Maybe State's budget should be prepared henceforth to finance 1 Evangelism and 2 Moslem pilgrimage, with equal amount every year.

I understand your point but I still insist that pilgrimage is not a christian requirement. Why must we say if one religion does it, we must get our share? That is the Nigerian attitude, not Christianity talking. And for sure, I support Buhari’s call to end all government involvement in such matters. In fact I do not even consider that the government should have any regard for the state of religion whether good or bad. People that can't provide ordinary electricity want to advise you on spiritual matters? Not their business at all.

Come on, this story is not believable in any respect. A thousand dollars per annum? So what does he send home? If at all he visits home, what would the money do after he has purchased a ticket? Can he marry or pose like our people do, that he is working 'abroad'? Or support a family? I think people are just to eager to type responses without the barest minimum of thought. You are missing the point. When did pilgrimage become a part of Christian faith, that is what I ask? Do American Christians, British, French, Italian, Brazilian, Chinese, south African, etc, do they consider it a part of their faith to visit Jerusalem? Where in the bible is it recommended?

The latest report concerns Wallace Turnquist, a supposed wealthy American who went on a hunting safari to Africa with his son Skyler in 2014.

The story claims that during the safari tour Skyler found the local people "funny", and Wallace bought Ezekiel Akpu-nku from Nigeria as a human toy.

Those refineries were meant for a lesser population not 170 million. So I don't think that it will be possible get all we need even if all the refineries operate in full capacity including dangote's. But net importation will reduce.

Why have out refineries been operating at under 20% capacity at best, under Jonathan? Some are even closer to 0%. Please explain the developments Jonathan started in Bayelsa as acting governor, and then as governor, that the people of Bayelsa celebrate today. Obasanjo outlined and started the railway development plan in 2006 in a speech to the nation that I have previously posted. Now Jonathan claims it as his own. Amnesty was Yaraduas plan. What ideas has this Jonathan outlined that can truly be said to be his own vision? "Technology" to fight corruption? FOI? PBI? Privatisation of ailing state industries?

Dangote refineries coming up soon is a good example.

About the government run refinery, the original builders were invited to do turn around maintenance. They referred us to another company who accepted to it but refused to guarantee that it will work to capacity for x number of years after maintenance. The ministry called them bluff. Assembled local engineers to brainstorm. They have started work on the ref using totally local engineers. That is empowerment. That is development. That is local content. Innoson use 35% local raw material for its vehicle. About 200 steel Rollin meals reactivated. You can agree with me that this government has done so so much to diversify economy more than any other.

WHEN Industry, Trade and Investment minister, Olusegun Aganga, disclosed the Goodluck Jonathan administration’s plan towards ending the country’s depressing regime of fuel importation in 2018 and highlighted its conscious efforts at making more of non-oil exports to boost revenue, the excitement that followed was not surprising. But if past initiatives and especially the conflicting policy signals from this government are anything to go by, disappointment may be an end-result. And Nigeria does not deserve that. Undoubtedly, the plan is the most desirable option for a country, which wastes too much money importing what it can produce. But corruption and lack of political will have prevented the nation’s leaders from doing the right thing.

The high dependence on fuel importation, linked to a low domestic refining capacity, has been the tragedy of Nigeria’s oil sector. If only the government would get more serious with the reform processes, including ending importation of fuel products!

Based on the industrial revolution launched in 2012, by the Goodluck Jonathan administration, Aganga said: “There are many sectors we should have developed over the years, but for decades, we relied entirely on exporting raw materials. That era has gone.” Part of the good news from the minister is that stopping the importation would save the country a minimum of $10 billion, having spent about “three billion dollars importing steel, about six billion dollars importing cars and spare parts, about $1.7 billion on sugar.” According to him, 13 other products that would replace oil and in which Nigeria has comparative advantage as well as export capacity in agro-industrial, mining related and industrial products have also been identified. This sounds good.

Contrary to Aganga’s hope, however, only a few months ago, Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke who has been in charge of the country’s oil and gas assets for the past four years had, in an address practically dismissed hopes of ending fuel importation by some African countries, including Angola, Uganda, Mozambique and Nigeria in the next 20 years.

Considering her powerful position in the industry, Alison-Madueke is adequately informed about developments in the industry. So, the question is: who do Nigerians believe between Alison-Madueke and Aganga? What informed the oil minister’s claim of an irredeemable situation for another 20 years before the importation regime becomes history? And what informs Aganga’s optimism?

The existing, under-performing four refineries, no doubt, are part of the general malaise. That the bulk of Nigeria’s crude oil is refined abroad is a pointer to the high level of inefficiency in the industry. The four refineries including the old Port Harcourt Refinery (1965), the Warri Refinery (1978), the Kaduna Refinery (1980) and the new Port Harcourt Refinery (1987) are all functioning at sub-optimal capacity, thanks to official ineptitude and a regime in which maintenance culture is almost zero.

Thus case must receive the fullest prosecution because it is full of facts that can be independently verified. The APC must bring the electoral frauds of the pdp government under Jonathan into the full public spotlight. The actions of ministers and the security services are shameless beyond belief.
