I am not sure this is the kind of thing the government needs to be spending money on. The president can be represented for sure but all this big-man-ism and son of big-man-ism needs to stop. #change |
Karlman:Whatever the tactics are, people who are well fed and employed rarely ever start violent insurrections. Where government is effective and efficient it is the same, the people are tamed by prosperity or the prospect of it. The French revolution, the Russian revolution if you have an example of a middle class revolution please let me know. If government was effective in developing both the north east and the Niger Delta do you suppose there would still be this eruption of discontent? |
Karlman:The violence whether in the north or south is a response to the conditions people find themselves living in, especially when they have no expectation that things will change. Poverty, the unfair distribution and utilisation of resources... What do both areas have in common? Unemployment (irrespective of education), poor or missing government services, few economic opportunities outside of government spending, unfair law enforcement in favour of the oil companies or government and it's allies, and extremely poor quality leadership at the community level. (Yes the militants leaders have enriched themselves and joined the oppressive elite, while their communities remain exactly as they were before they took up arms). In every part of the country leaders cocoon themselves with state funds to the detriment of the masses. Boko haram is a phenomenon in the north east and not north west for a reason. The north east is the poorest part of this country, and if you recall, when they were first burning their certificates because it had become clear that even going to school did not guarantee that you would still not die of hunger and unemployment, some people were amused. Look at the militants leaders, are they any different... They have used violence and the threat of violence to enrich themselves, collected commission from the stipends paid by the government to their 'followers', bought planes and are building universities in foreign lands. And yet their own people still dream of pipe borne water and working health centres. Boko haram is a pseudo Islamic fraud just as the motives of the militants leaders is obviously fraudulent. Of course you know Asari is a Muslim but all of his type have only shown a lust for money and power. What they have achieved even in their own villages, is pathetic to say the least. |
Karlman:You really don't know much about this issue. I would suggest you read a lot more on the activities of Saudi Arabia in this regard. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/aug/31/combat-terror-end-support-saudi-arabia-dictatorships-fundamentalism http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/saudi/analyses/madrassas.html https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wahhabism |
Karlman:Perhaps to you Saudi Arabia is a moderate Islamic state but to others (most of the 9/11 terrorists were Saudis) they are the biggest sponsors of wahabi fundamentalism across the world. And they are the land the gave the world bin laden. |
Karlman:The same reasons that cause militancy in the delta, the same reasons that cause people to siphon fuel from pipelines, or rush tankers that are involved in accidents... The same reason why kidnapping is now a national industry... Poverty and ignorance. When this exists in a society where sudden wealth is praised and glorified even in houses of worship, where injustice is the norm, what else can be expected? Remember, even the ANC was once classified as a terrorist organisation. The problem is nationwide, not northern or religious or tribal. |
Aspireahead:On the point regarding the Senate president and Speaker, I have to agree with you. The writer is indeed being juvenile to suggest that this is anything but an ego contest and manoeuvre by political gladiators. Exactly what would Lawan offer the country if he occupied the position. When he was contesting and even now, has he suggested anything that would be more appealing to the public other than chanting "party supremacy" while all can see the shadow of Tinubu behind him? I dare say both Saraki and Dogara have acted with more maturity and diplomacy after the election and neither is going anywhere anytime soon. The APC will not punish anyone even if harsh words have been exchanged behind closed doors. It is the losers who are now unnecessarily prolonging the issue but yet again they will be out manoeuvred because Tinubu has shown his hand too early and too crudely. When you find yourself in a hole, the best advice is to stop digging! #change |
aare07:The cost of cement is neither here nor there. The cost of purchasing and registering land is what is prohibitive. And then one needs a sensible mortgage industry to offer a minimum of ten or fifteen year mortgages so that people can divert money spent on rent, to paying for their own properties. Then again there must be faster routes to repossession and resale of properties where the owner defaults on his mortgage. A 3 bedroom flat can easily be built for 4-6 million to suit the purchasing power of the common man. |
From the main article ; Here is why the Gordon Bell Prize, Emeagwali’s only legitimate achievement, is much less than what he has portrayed it as: • The cash award for the prize is a mere $1000. Often, the amount of an award is a good guide to its prestige and significance in the field. • Consider the fact that the most prestigious prize in the field of computing (and yet it cannot even be called the Nobel of Computing without insulting the real Nobel) is the Turing Prize, which carries a cash prize of $100,000. • The Gordon Bell is awarded in the narrow subfield of supercomputing, thereby further thinning the applicant pool and reducing the intensity of the competition. • The prize is further subdivided into several categories. Emeagwali won in one of those categories, the price/performance category. The more prestigious overall Peak Performance category was won by the entry submitted by a team from Mobil and TMC. • It is interesting that apart from Emeagwali no other winner(s) of the Gordon Bell annual prize makes noise about winning it or claims to have won “the Nobel Prize of Computing.” They usually go on to do bigger and better research in the field, the Gordon Bell being just a launch pad for future significant work. The public does not even know the other winners because it is a minor prize even in the field of computing. • Finally, and most importantly, Philip Emeagwali only won the prize in the price/performance category by default. His calculation of 3.1 Gflops was the second fastest speed. The fastest speed belonged to the Mobil/TMC team’s entry, whose calculation, according to the official record of the IEEE, which administers the prize (IEEE Software, May 1990, p. 101), bested Emeagwali’s speed. The speed of the Mobil/TMC Team’s solution to the seismic data processing problem was almost twice that of Emeagwali’s at almost 6Gflops. Similarly, and of more relevance for our purpose here, the Mobil/TMC team’s entry achieved the best speed/cost ratio (price-performance) at 500 Mflops per $1 Million, beating out Emeagwali’s entry, whose speed/cost ration was less than 400 Mflops per $1 Million. In fact the prize in the price/performance category was actually awarded to the Mobil/TMC initially. However, because the Mobil TMC team won also won in the overall Peak Performance category and the IEEE’s prize rule does not allow more than one prize per entry, the Mobil/TMC team forfeited their prize in the price/performance category, sticking with the prize for overall Peak Performance, a more significant category. As a result, Emeagwali’s entry, the second placed entry with the second highest speed/cost ratio, was automatically bumped to first place. For all these reasons, it is the height of self-promotion and delusional exaggeration for Mr. Emeagwali to claim that he won the Nobel Prize of Computing or that the Gordon Bell is regarded as the Nobel of Computing. Nobody except Mr. Emeagwali regards the prize as such. It is noteworthy that both Emeagwali and the Mobile/TMC Team relied on the CM-2 Machine (the Connection Machine) for their calculations, the same machine that Emeagwali falsely claims to have invented! A final point to note here is that the research for which he won the Gordon Bell Prize (by default) has application and relevance only in the narrow area of oil flow reservoir modeling and oil prospecting. His entry for the competition utilized and optimized the capacity of parallel computing, that is, relied on an already existing Internet. Emeagwali’s own website states that he “accessed the supercomputers over the Internet from local workstations.” Neither the research nor the prize had anything to do with the Internet. The Internet was already invented and fairly perfected by then; otherwise he would not be, in his own words, “accessing the supercomputers over the Internet.” This clarification is necessary and important because some of Emeagwali’s supporters and victims tend to assume wrongly that his purported fatherhood of the internet derives from the research for which he won the Gordon Bell Prize. SonOfEl:http://sunnewsonline.com/new/fake-doctor-led-nma-police/ Fake doctor led NMA –Police 0 By Our Reporter on July 8, 2015 COVER, National • Suspect: Blame system not me From MOLLY KILETE, Abuja A former chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has been exposed by the police as a fake doctor. He operated under the name, Dr. George Daniel. His real name is Martins Ugwu Okpe Parading the suspect before newsmen yesterday at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the police said the 45-year-old man who has worked as a medical doctor with the Federal Ministry of Health, Abuja since 2006, rose to Grade Level 12 status, was after all, an impostor and fake. Okpe was attached to the Research and Planning Department of the ministry. Interestingly, the suspect, who is a secondary school certificate holder, became the NMA chairman, Federal Ministry of Health branch, where he was in charge of the welfare of qualified medical doctors. He was among the medical volunteers trained by the ministry in conjunction with the African Union Support to Ebola out-break in West Africa(ASEOWA), Mission in Liberia, but declined to proceed for the trip after collecting all the allowances from both the ministry and the AU. He also secured admission for professional training at the Centre for Disease Control, tagged: “Nigeria Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training (NFELTP), which is a post-graduate programme affiliated to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. However, his academic performance casts doubts on his competence as a medical doctor. Okpe refused to accept blame for his crime. He heaped the blame on the porous system for not detecting his true status over the years. Ironically, the “doctor” defended his action, saying he was in the system to correct the inherent errors and expose the lapses. Police had revealed that the suspect stole the certificate of his medical doctor friend, one George Davidson Daniel, with which he gained employment with the ministry as a doctor and bears the name on the certificate. The police said he would be charged with impersonation. Force Deputy spokesman, Abayomi Shogunle, said the fake doctor was exposed following a petition to the Inspector-General of Police on March 10 this year by Festus Keyamo chambers on behalf of Martins Ugwu Okpe, an impostor that assumed the identity of Dr. George Davidson Daniel. He said the petition was transferred to the police analytical tracking and inception centre for investigation. According to him, the Federal Civil Service Commission had also written a petition against the suspect, dated May, 2015, when he was found to be engaging in unprofessional conduct and unwholesome behaviour of fomenting trouble, blackmailing and misleading health workers among other crimes. Police said his trouble started after investigation carried out on him by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) found him to be fake and traced the records of Dr. Daniel, who is in a residency programme in Jos, to the Ahmadu Bello University, Faculty of Medicine, that contained a passport size photograph bearing no resemblance with the suspect. Further police investigation showed that the suspect is a childhood friend of the doctor. He stole the certificate when he was his friend’s best man. But Okpe, who said he had wanted to become a soldier, but failed to gain admission into the Nigerian Defence Academy(NDA), said he actually stole the certificate when his friend visited him at his home in Karu, Abuja, noting that he regretted what he did. |
SonOfEl:Recently in our own country a man has been unveiled as pretending to be a doctor for 9 years, and securing a job on that basis. Do we call it an ego problem, and why has he been asked to refund all salaries paid to him on the basis of his fake qualifications? Emeagwali did the same to a previous government pretending to be something he was not and charging fees on that basis. That is the definition of fraud, just in case you are still confused about that. |
Agenda... At least get that right... Not agender |
shachris:Just in case you don't keep up with the news, Buhari has declined to purchase new vehicles, and Stella Oduah remains a thief, and Senator with the approval of her people. I don't recall mentioning her though? Now I guess Lamido and Nyako being in custody is evidence if your tribal witch hunt? What a load of rubbish! #change |
Author is clearly the backend of a donkeys cousin. Good to know he supports Diezani in all her corruption and harlotry. Adedibu was feeding the public in Ibadan, Saraki the elder was doing the same in ilorin and the ubas have similarly corrupted their localities. Why is it different when a northerner does it. Have all signs of illiteracy left the author... Some of the stupid expressions he uses cause me to doubt his iq has escaped single digit territory. |
Dollyak:He very deliberately wants to antagonise Muslims as evidenced by his other threads/comments. Has he seen any igbo Muslims chasing him, and weren't the easterners happy to support Asari Dokubo a Muslim when he was threatening the unity and peace of the country? If only nairaland had an ignore button... |
Another childish thread launched by cut and paste! |
OLAADEGBU:You can do so much better... |
lygn19:He was the second to throw the first punch? |
fulanimafia:Lol. I really shouldn't but wtf Rotfl |
SonOfEl:Giving yourself a title you have not earned is fraudulent, not a sign of pride,, quite the opposite. It is a sign of low self esteem, and an attempt to hide feelings of inadequacy. Til tomorrow bill Gates is still Mr. Gates, even the top performers on youtube are making a few million dollars a year, but we think a man who won a thousand dollars two decades ago is a "genius". Kim Kardashian must find that so very funny. How much do you think her security guard earns a month? Genius level... |
SonOfEl:I have read enough to know there is nothing to him but lies and deception. If a man was constantly reminding you that he won a prize in 1990, won't you be pushed to enquire what he has done with his life since? I have enough self-worth and pride not to insist on making a fraud a hero. Just because he's black or igbo? There are always more worthy people around so let this crook be. |
Ridiculous reporting. Tinubus overbearing nature means he is certainly not going to win any contest he enters against Atiku. And certainly not the contest for chairman of the BOT. If his ego gets bruised time and again, perhaps it's because he needs to learn something very necessary. #change #GMB #APC |
OLAADEGBU:Please where else have you seen this story? BBC, CNN, xinhua, even north Korea has not seen any sense in this purported news. Where is this reliable source and what is theirs history? Have you yourself researched the source to your satisfaction? #change |
wesley80:The one thing you don't mention is the most obvious result of the policy. The price to the consumer of such imported goods will rise, and unless they are inelastic re demand, the market for such goods will shrink and there will be some import substitution that will be more net positive for our economy. I'm sorry but I have little sympathy for frivolous imports when we have the labour and land mass lying unused because of our own incompetence and lack of foresight. #change |
SonOfEl:Please do your homework first. Microsoft was formed not invented. The basis of the 'windows' operating system was based on the intellectual property of another that Microsoft was able buy out. And windows was neither original nor the best operating system on offer. Bill Gates has however shown more endurance and capacity in developing the Office software suite to accompany the operating system. What exactly have you heard from emeagwali after his one thousand dollar prize? His achievement was actually that he achieved the best price/performance ratio, but even that year on raw computing performance another team bested him. Was his achievement worth writing a book about? |
ClockworkOrange:Whatever you are smoking... It's too early. People like you that feast on tribal antagonism will never understand people like me. I step aside from that type of infantile behaviour, and when you grow up you may understand why. #change |
ClockworkOrange:Please show your true colours. I am neither hausa, yoruba or igbo! #dyenow ish |
SonOfEl:It secured nothing. What has he achieved since that prize? Who has he worked for, what were his achievements? Even Ben Bruce pays beauty Queens more than one thousand dollars! Do you actually understand what genius means? The man has been coasting on faded achievement and could not do even a good PhD thesis so he shouted racism. Genius implies consistency of high intellectual output. Perhaps Goodluck really deserves that Nobel peace prize people have been talking about. #change |
MyMouth:Thanks for advising the... Pillock. |

Garbage! |
wesley80:I think you miss the point the cbn governor is making... He has no power to ban any goods. All he is saying is that such importers should source their foreign currency elsewhere. Soludo was an economist who still left a dogs mess behind for mallam Sanusi to clean up. Makes you wonder... However I still believe Emefiele must leave that position for a more credible person soon. #change |
