Ahead of the May 23, 2015 local government election in Rivers State, the Independent National Electoral Commission said it has not released voters register to the State Independent Electoral Commission for the exercise.

The Administrative Secretary of the commission, Mr. Roy Oburu, who was reacting to reports that the commission had released the voters register to RSIEC, stated this in a statement in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

Oburu explained that INEC refused to release the documents, which would enable voters to choose their council chairmen and councillors in obedience to a High Court order, which ruled that the status quo be maintained pending the determination of a suit challenging the jurisdiction of the High Court on a matter brought before it.

The statement read, “The attention of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Rivers State has been drawn to the news item on the release of voters’ register by the commission to Rivers state Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC.

“INEC wishes to state categorically that at no time did INEC Rivers release voters’ register to RSIEC as alleged in the news item been aired by some media houses. To put the records straight, INEC, Rivers received a letter on the 28 day of April, 2015, on the pendency of the suit between PDP vs INEC and 40RS from E.C. Aguma counsel to PDP.

“When the matter came up on the 29th of April, 2015 before the learned trial judge, Justice Akande of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt, counsel to the 2nd and 3rd respondents B.E. Nwafor SAN, informed the court that they had gone on appeal challenging the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court to entertain the matter and therefore urged the court to adjourn the matter sine die.”

RIVERS State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has said the recent decision by the State Independent Electoral Commission to conduct local government elections in the state in May 2015 was in in line with the law.

Amaechi, who spoke with newsmen at the Government House in Port Harcourt, said since RISIEC was acting according to the law, there should be nothing to stop council elections in Rivers.

It will be recalled that the state electoral commission had announced that local government elections would hold on May 23, 2015.

But the state Peoples Democratic Party has kicked against the announcement by RISIEC, saying the commission did not give 90 days notice as prescribed by the law.

However, Amaechi argued that since the PDP was not comfortable with RISIEC’s decision to hold council elections, the party should go to a state High Court.

Amaechi cautioned that only the state High court would entertain such a matter, adding that a Federal High Court has no jurisdiction on matters concerning local government elections.

“If they are complying with the law then they are in order, if they are not complying with the law then they (PDP) should go to the State High Court and stop it.

“If they go to the Federal High Court, they should know that the Federal High Court has no jurisdiction and I hope that everybody will be careful this time because the Federal Government will be serious with anybody who decides to manipulate the system,” the governor said.

Amaechi reasoned that the elections would allow the electorate to choose who would govern them, maintaining that the people of the state were not allowed to choose thier leaders in the 2015 general election.

“You know in the last (general) elections, the people did not choose who will govern them. But this time, the people will be allowed to choose who will govern them as chairmen of council and councillors.

“I don’t see how they can stop the local government council elections from going on,” Amaechi added.

The governor dismissed claims that the All Progressives Congress was having internal wranglings over ministerial appointments and pointed out that the party had yet to conclude on the matter.

He said, “There has not been any crisis whatsoever since the elections. There has been only one meeting that was held that has to do with zoning of offices and they said the elders should go and zone the offices and the elders are yet to return to the party. So all you are hearing are speculations.”

He agreed with the position of President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), that ministerial appointees must declare their assets.

“They (ministerial appointees) don’t have any choice. If you want to serve in the new administration you will have to abide by the rule to publicly declare your assets,” Amaechi said.

In less than 24 hours of his suspension from the Labour Party, LP, over alleged anti- party activities, Rivers State governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Prince Tonye Princewill has sued for peace in Rivers State, stating that the interest and security of Rivers people were paramount to him, arguing that a fresh election would likely result to violence, and deprive Rivers people the desired peace.

Refusing to allign with either APC or PDP over the outcome of the highly controversial election in the state, Princewill in a statement obtained exclusively by DAILY POST said, “We see the two of them as birds of the same feather, fruits of the same tree and two sides of the same coin, so rather than add fuel to their fire, we will opt to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.”

Princewill also dismissed any possible court action over the election, adding that he will not go “down the road of a huge legal expense to pursue “justice” in court since a repeat election, if it were to come, may only reproduce an even bloodier outcome which will also be the subject of litigation. princewill

He said that, “In spite of the flaws in the election, the Independent National Electoral Commission still went on to announce a winner. As law abiding citizens, we can not stop him (Wike) but we promise him, we will always be here to remind him, Rivers state must always come first.”

Reacting to his alleged suspension, the LP candidate said that his decision not to align with any of the two political parties was solely responsible for the decision as some party members are aggrieved over his position. He accused them of placing more emphasis on money instead of peace in Rivers State. He however assured that the friction would be addressed in due time as the love of “money is the root of all evil.”

He said, “On the subject of my purported suspension by the Labour Party; let me plead with members of the public and our many party faithfuls, not to be distracted. The love of money is the root of all evil. Our decision not to align has not gone down well with some party faithfuls. All will be resolved soon. And justice in the end will always prevail. Friction is a function of interaction. This is a party of laws. We must and we will follow them.”

Princewill rejects alignment with PDP or APC. Opts for peace.

After a marathon meeting of the expanded Princewill campaign team where we sat to analyze the just concluded 2015 general elections, the organisation critically looked at the four possible options before our team

The options were:

1. Go to court to challenge the just concluded gubernatorial election,

2. Align with the PDP and help Wike improve Rivers State,

3. Align with APC and fight this injustice,

or

4. Stand alone, don’t go to court, but remain available to help the state and the country move forward.

The house took into deep consideration, the realities on ground, the welfare of Rivers people and most importantly the opinions of the general public, who we had engaged via various media over the past few days.

Our decision is outlined below.

It is no longer in doubt that the election in Rivers state was neither free nor fair nor credible. Rather than the jubilation of a victory or the recriminations of a defeat, I and my team prefer to keep searching for peace. The bloodshed is simply too much and the thirst for even more appears palpable. Who will be left for us to lead? How much more of this can we take?

After careful consideration therefore, I and my political associates have decided, not to align with either of the other two political parties but to stand with Rivers people for the sake of peace and long term prosperity. We see the two of them as birds of the same feather, fruits of the same tree and two sides of the same coin so rather than add fuel to their fire, we will opt to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.

We are also not inclined to go down the road of a huge legal expense to pursue “justice” in court since a repeat election, if it were to come, may only reproduce an even bloodier outcome which will also be the subject of litigation. In spite of the flaws in the election, the Independent National Electoral Commission still went on to announce a winner. As law abiding citizens, we can not stop him but we promise him, we will always be here to remind him, Rivers state must always come first.

Neither APC nor PDP are my enemies. They were just my opponents in a game of politics. It is time to put the past behind us. So from today, I and my team pledge to do whatever is in the people’s interest to help Rivers state and Nigeria move forward. That is simply paramount. That is what is important. We came to contest elections, not to fight a war. We are here to serve.

Rivers people have been through hell, with no jobs, the business community can help us resolve that. They can do a lot better and if we help them thrive, investors could be willing to come. But first we must have peace. Let our internal divisions and our politics not deny our children the bright future we all need.

The Labour Party in Rivers State has suspended its flagbearer in the recently conducted Governorship election in the state, Tonye Princewill.

The party at a media briefing in Port Harcourt announced the suspension of Princewill in a communique of an enlarged meeting of the Labour Party leaders.

Chairman of LP in Rivers state, Felix Favour said Tonye Princewill was suspended for engaging in anti-party activities. Favour noted that their guber flagbearer would have to present himself before a panel constituted to investigate the allegations against him.

He said, “The state Executive council agreed that he has not been carrying the party along. He has never done anything for the party and we have agreed that he has to be suspended for carrying out anti-party activities.

“We are carrying out our investigation and we are going to do our findings. But for now, we are asking the general public not to deal with Tonye Princewill as a member of the Labour Party. He should be dealt with as an individual.

“Any view of Tonye Princewill on the just concluded 2015 election is not the view of the Labour party. The Party said the suspension of Tonye Princewill was in line with its constitution.
