I was given another long list for burial of my father inlaw last year.
I called and told them am not doing another Traditional marriage so i wont accept such list. I will only give what i feel like to assist the burial, so the family shouldnt shift the burial burden on me. it is me that will bury my father and non of them will contribute a dime to it.

Yes, you are right, my inlaws and their village people capitalized on my ability to pay. Paying over N1.2M for traditional marriage 12yrs ago was much.
I had to make a choice : Pay or walk away from the marriage.
I paid by giving them all they requested on their silly list. It badly ruined my white wedding budget which was 2 wks after.
But one thing i have resolved over the years is that - No damn Village person or family head or Village head will determine what happens in my daughters T.M.
I wont even invite them.
My kids arent growing up in the village or anywhere close to it and I dont give a damn about any silly tradition.
After all, none of them village people is contributing a kobo for their education now.
So why will i go and pay homage to them during my daughters TM?

The list is given out for negotiation and you will realize that at the end of the day you will not pay up to quarter of that list.. most of the things on the list would be used on traditional marriage day to take of the guest including the groom's people and not to their consumption alone.

The family usually weighs your ability to pay. God help u if you work in Oil company or bank.
I speak from experience, i was made to pay 100% of the list. No negotiation.
I swear , my inlaws held me to ransome that i must not negotiate.
And mind you, my fiancee ( my wife now) wasnt pregnant o,... so dont even think in that direction.

Am from Akwa Ibom, i didnt live or grow up in Akwa ibom but i married from Akwa Ibom and was a victim too.
My Traditional List was roughly N2M plus. They learnt i was in the Financial sector and dished out long list. And that was 12yrs ago. I screamed Blue Murder and threatened. it was reduced to N1.2 M or so.
And i swear (contrary to what u claim) they made me pay exactly what was on that list. No bargaining. I paid with tears.

Lets tell ourselves the truth, these extortion must stop. Things are hard. We cant have families and village people coming to reap where they did not sow by ripping off an inlaw who came to marry their daugghter.
