Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, yesterday, alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari might not relinquish power if defeated in next month’s Presidential poll.


Wike at a thanksgiving service at the end of the 2019 Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Port Harcourt, said his hunch about the President was informed by perceived “illegal actions of the Buhari’s administration.”

He flayed Federal Government for targeting the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Walter Onnoghen, over “concocted charges.” saying the development was both intended to intimidate the judiciary ahead of the elections and targeted at the Niger Delta same way former President Jonathan was muzzled.

He said, “The law is clear. You can’t try any judge except the National Judicial Council, NJC, approves. They know they cannot try the CJN, but all they are doing is to cause embarrassment, put fear in all the judges.

“An Attorney General will sit and file such charges against the CJN one month to general election. What kind of crisis are they setting up? They want to cause crisis in the judiciary and think everyone should keep quiet?

“Since 1960 of Nigeria’s independence, a Niger Delta person became President for the first time in 2011. The entire country ganged up against him, gave excuses and denied us a second term.”

Chaos rocked Iworoko-Ekiti, Ekiti State, following the fatal accident that killed at least 15 persons and injured many others while conveying bags of rice to Ondo State on Saturday night.

The angry youths in Iworoko-Ekiti stormed the scene of the accident to protest and destroyed many bags of the campaign rice as can bee seen in the footage below.

The bags of rice were branded with the campaign stickers of a senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State.

Among the dead was a mother, her child, a Youth Corps member, traders and some students of the Ekiti State University in the town.

A large crowd of sympathisers were seen wailing at the scene of the accident.

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, on Sunday warned President Muhammadu Buhari not to plunge the nation into crisis saying his party is ready to resist him.

Mr Secondus’ statement came on the heels of the upcoming arraignment of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen before the Code of Conduct Tribunal over his failure to declare his assets.

The issue is currently generating heated debate in the polity.

Mr Secondus at a PDP presidential rally in Jos on Sunday said the party would resist the president’s attempt to ‘attack’ the judiciary.

He said Mr Buhari was planning to rig the 2019 elections by first compromising the judiciary.

“Thirty days to the election, Buhari and APC want to destroy Nigeria. We (PDP) will not agree. If they want crisis, they will see it,” Mr Secondus said.

According to Mr Secondus, the last hope for the common man which is the judiciary is under attack.

“Buhari and his APC are planning to carpet it to dance to their tune. Nigerians must rise up to resist these antics capable of destroying Nigeria,” he added.

Mr Secondus said the president is desperate for a second term in office and started by attacking politicians, moved to attack the National Assembly and is now laying a siege on the judicial arm of government.

He also claimed that the APC led government “wanted to kill” the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and an opposition senator, Dino Melaye, who is presently detained by the police over criminal allegations.




“They started killing upon killing. Buhari and APC want to destroy the country. They have started with politicians, then to members of National Assembly and now heading to the judiciary. They want to carpet the judiciary so as to dance to their tune.

“We must rise up and resist it. This thing didn’t happen in Congo or Venezuela. If they want crisis, they will see it. They want to start the rigging from the judiciary but it would not work,” he said.

Meanwhile, the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, said the APC had failed in governance.

Mr Abubakar had condemned the upcoming arraignment of Mr Onnoghen.

He also promised to restructure the country while ensuring peace returns to the troubled state.

“I want to promise you three things. I will restore peace and unity in Plateau. I will make Plateau the economic nerve and provide jobs. I call on you to vote all PDP candidates. APC is not campaigning because it has already lost the election,” Mr Abubakar said.

Mr Saraki, who also spoke at the rally, said the PDP remains the only choice in 2019.

“APC promised you security, you don’t have security. APC promised you jobs but we lost jobs. There is hunger everywhere. If you want security, job and food, vote PDP,” Mr Saraki, who decamped from the APC in 2018, said.

The APC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, raised the alarm in a press release on Saturday.

The extra from North West added to the 20% from North East will cancel out difference in South East. The 5% from South West is enough for Buhari to make it 4+4. President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said he was confident of victory at next month’s presidential election.

He stated that all that was needed was an extra push by the Presidential Campaign Council and the February 16 poll would become a formality.

Buhari spoke in Abuja at the inaugural meeting of the council.


However, All Progressives Congress governors were absent at the meeting.

Buhari said, “I will like to appeal to you to dedicate yourselves once again to the task at hand.

“There is no doubt that victory is ours. But that shouldn’t mean we should rest even for a moment.”

The National Leader of the APC and co-chairman of the council, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; the APC National Chairman, Mr Adams Oshiomhole; and the Director-General of the campaign and Minster of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, among others, attended the session

Buhari had on Tuesday handed over the leadership of the campaign to Tinubu when he inaugurated the council in Abuja.

On Thursday, he reminded the council members that they were the best materials available to the party.

“I urge you to rise to the challenge of the great expectations of this party and Nigerians – and the confidence that I personally have in the ability of all of you to deliver,” Buhari added.

In his speech, Oshiomhole said the state governors were already doing their coordination assignments and were busy in their respective states.
