Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi will stay in hospital at least until Tuesday after having his nose broken by an attacker, doctors say.

A medical bulletin reported in the Italian media said Mr Berlusconi was able to eat, but only with difficulty.

Mr Berlusconi, 73, suffered a broken nose, two broken teeth and a cut lip after being hit with a model of Milan cathedral after a rally in the city.

A 42-year-old man was arrested and has been charged with aggravated assault.

The suspect, Massimo Tartaglia, was said by police to have had a history of mental illness, receiving treatment over a 10-year period.

The medical bulletin released at midday on Monday said Mr Berlusconi was taking pain killers and antibiotics.

His nose is to be reset and he has been given stitches, though he will not need surgery.

Mr Berlusconi's doctor, Alberto Zangrillo, has said it could take a few weeks for the prime minister to fully recover.

"I found him shaken, embittered, as if he had been woken from a bad dream really disheartened," he was quoted as saying.

Earlier, Italian news agency Ansa reported that Mr Berlusconi had spent a settled night at the San Raffaele hospital.

His first request upon waking up in the hospital in Milan was to see some newspapers, the agency said.

The Italian leader is believed to have been struck full in the face by the souvenir cathedral while signing autographs.

After the attack on Sunday evening the prime minister, looking dazed, was helped to his feet by aides and put in a car.

wow, what a show? sometimes, i want to know what is happening in nigeria. no throwing of shoes or even stick. the only related incident was the throwing of tomatoes at obasanjo in london though without pictures like that of berlusconi.

But please allow Anambra people determine their own future for themselves. SOLUDO has campaigned more than any other candidate in the Anambra Election. Wherever he goes people have been responsive to his message. He has rejected Uba's thugery even before election yet folks like you criticise him for doing so and worship Ngige who engaged in all soughts of diabolical activities with the Ubas just to become a Governor.

The only way the above makes logical sense is that you guys will rather have Anambra perpetually in crisis of fear of hooligans like Uba so that you can continue to have examples of how civil politics never works in the South-East.

it happened in anambra when chris ngige was rigged into power under pdp. we saw andy/prof iwu follishness and that was pdp. we are all living witnesses to the yar adua coup as was written and directed by obj.
soludo might have all it takes to win in the courts and win at the state level, but he does not have what it takes to win an ordinary primary election hence appointment as usual.
soludo must be reffered to the yar adua situation at present. the God of innocent nigerians can never sleep. the judgement time is arround.

I believe everyone of us follow the news. For two years, the EFCC tried to get INTERPOL arrest the two men but failed. I know this because I happened to know someone who know. When they failed, they used that excused as the reason not to release Ibori's witness to testify in London court. But for the pressure from many quarters, Ibori's mistress will never have been allowed to go to London to testify. The AGF was trying to use the case to blackmail the British govt to arrest Ribadu and El Rufai who always visit the place.

Now, my sentiment is this. Why will the silly EFC wait till El Rufa announced the date of his return to the country before asking INTERPOL to arrest him? Let su look at it objectively. Forget whatever reason The two men are being wanted. let look at that fact alone and see if we indeed have responsible law enforcement agencies in the country.

They are taking Nigerians for granted by acting as if we are silly. And I am surprised that many people are here buying the idea. El Rufai was told to delay his return to the country but he choose to return and even wrote all the media houses home and abroad about the date he will return. Not only that, he was oon BBC to confirm that he will return. And to my chargrin, I woke up the following day to find the news that EFCC has asked INTERPOL to arrest him and Ribadu!

Who are they fooling? I think for once, we should give the El rufai his due. If he announced the date of his return openly inspite of the dangers, then all we must do is wait till he return and let the court do his work.

I still wonder why we are chasing people like el rufai who was accused of stealing the money that was not missing while we all hail the EFCC for allowing Iboris and co walk round the country like king. SOmething must be wrong with us. In a sane country, Ibori would have been chased out of the country. Anyway, I believe he is free because the court make him free. and because Ribadu who is holding his case file is on exile.

What next? we shouldnt lose our sleep over el Rufai, let us allow him to defend himself in court. I hope the hawk will not try to hurt him.

The Polls are yet to come in February 2010 and Soludo is applying to test his popularity at that poll.

If the poll you are talking about is PDP nomination process. Then I am sorry I can't keep making this point over and over again. Political parties have the right to choose a candidate as they so wish. PDP tried to conduct primary election and a court of law deemed it fit to grant an order to stop the democratic process from happening. PDP had to reach for other mechanisms of nomination within its party constitution. That was how Soludo emerged. His nomination may not be best practice but it is both Legal and Moral.
Even in the face of these challenges the process that threw up Soludo is far better than those of Ngige or Obi. So why are we selectively criticizing Soludo's nomination and not the rest. I have been asking in the last one month on various threads on Nairaland 'CAN SOMEONE PLEASE DEMONSTRATE TO ME HOW NGIGE'S/OBI'S NOMINATION PROCESS IS ANY BETTER THAN THOSE OF SOLUDO' Nobody has made the effort to prove it and I wont hold my breadth that anyone will. But yet people continue to make this selective and childish argument about Soludo's nomination.

You can not hold PDP to a different standard and the rest of the political parties to a totally another set of standards.

Soludo's candidacy will be confirmed by the Supreme court and he will contest 2010 polls. I hope PDP Anambra State keeps travelling the state around campaigning as a party untill the supreme courts confirm his candidacy. Hiding under the shield of unexistent laws that are never practised anywhere else in the world is not how to win an election. Its pure cowardice.

the problem here is most people here cannot define democracy and you are sure one of them. if you know the definition of democracy, u will know that it does not mean the govt of obsanjo, by obasanjo and for obasanjo. ur soludo no matter how innocent and effcetive he appears, must test his popularity by going to the polls.
obsanjo can never pick him and impose him on the people like he did on yar adua. the idea of forcing people to withdraw their political interests in authocratic and is called disfranchise in political science that is denying people their rights to vote and be voted for.
if you are informed, u will know that u are supposed to vote and u have right to be voted for as long as you are not having a criminal record or mental record. obasanjo has done enough damage to the people of nigeria who no longer take part in choosing who their leader shld be.
