Family / Re: When Your Mother Hates Your Wife Without Reason by chimezieeze98: 3:01pm On Sep 10, 2020
olawalepopoola:
Good day all. Hope we are all fine.
I want to ask what can be done when you get to know and confirm that your mother hates your wife without any tangible reason and all she wants is to either control your home or destroy it by all means.
Valuable answers will be appreciated

I was/am in similar situation. At first, I tried my best to make them become friends by calling respected family members to try and squash the beef. After several years and sttemps to end the hatred, I saw there was no peace coming.

It wasn't like my wife was doing anything wrong, but anytime she tried to do something to make my mom happy, she (my mom) will rather use insults to pay her back.

It was when I got to know that my mom wasn't happy cause unlike other family members who she had control of the marriages, I wanted to let my own marital life be private; I never ran to ask her for advice, they never heard me and my wife quarelling.

Truth is that even when I quarrel with my wife, we had agreed Niger to bring the quarrel outside and only come together to sort things out within ourselves when both of his had already calmed down.

@OP the only thing I will plead with you, never insult your mother in front of your wife, and never insult your wife in front of your mother; put your mother and every member of your family in their place. If maybe you used to seek financial help from your mom or family members, stop doing that cause such acts causes "see finish".

Once you know in your heart that your wife gives you peace and joy..... Bleep everyone else cause she is the one that you will live with for the rest of your life ND the outcome of your relationship determines the offspring you will have.

By the way, I still maintain a healthy relationship with my mother and siblings which I keep separate from the relationship I have with my wife. I didn't say I will go to war and quarrel with my siblings or mother cause of my wife, neither will I make my wife go through hurt and pains cause of my mother.

All the best

Crime / Video: Despite Border Closure, Rice Smuggling In Nigeria Is Unending by chimezieeze98: 3:58pm On Sep 05, 2020

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibyNEfAaro8

Notwithstanding all efforts to promote local production of rice in the country, the protracted smuggling of the commodity appears to have grown to the extent of dominating the market, just as it suck away the foreign exchange by way of capital flight.

Rice is actually the most preferred staple food for Nigerians, This make it so popular and ever sough for by Nigerians, young or old. Major markets across the country can never be short of rice. But the more worrisome aspect is that about 70 per cent of rice in the local market are foreign parboiled rice, while the locally made rice have been overwhelmed and barely has no place in the market.

For these facts, rice continues to receive more attractions from core businessmen, manipulators and the smugglers. Indeed, the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has adjudged rice as the most smuggled items through the land borders.

The Guardian investigations showed that rice is the most profitable commodity for smugglers as there are always ready buyers for the smuggled rice. The consumers also claimed that the foreign products are cheaper and more available than the locally produced rice.

During a visit to Seme border in Republic of Benin, it was discovered that the popular market in Seme was dominated by Nigerians who were buying rice in bags and smuggled them into Nigeria through the unapproved routes. Same thing was discovered at Idiroko border and Ilaro in Ogun State. In fact, Nigerian currency (Naira) was freely traded with in the Seme market.

The products are sometimes conveyed on motorcycle popularly known as Okada, carrying four to six bags at a go. They move it across the border with alleged 'settlement' of about N100 daily. The Guardian learnt that the Okada smugglers sometimes move in convoy with an escort who interface with the security agencies.

Aside from the petty rice smugglers, truckloads of the commodity are always smuggled into the country, although, many are being confiscated by the Customs. Notwithstanding the numerous seizures, the smugglers appears non perturbed, as they move on top of their game, against all odds.

Smuggling of foreign parboiled rice from across the borders (mainly Benin Republic) is posing threat to the rice industry in Nigeria.

For decades the Federal Government have been formulating policies on control of rice importation. In 2015 the government, through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) placed an outright ban on importation of rice from land borders, while it slammed 70 per cent duty on rice importation from the seaports, a measure it argued was to help conserve the nation's foreign reserves and encourage local production.

Despite the government's high tariffs, that supply gap is still being plugged by imports. Even worse, some importers are avoiding the steep import tariffs and chose excessive profiteering by smuggling rice through porous land borders, not minding the inherent risks.

The most terrible aspect is that the quality of the smuggled rice could not be guaranteed, thereby posing health challenges to the unsuspected citizens.

In 2016, an alarm was raised on the shipping of fake rice also known as 'plastic rice' into the country from China. The Customs was immediately put on red alert and the situation was later curtailed. As if that was not enough, in 2017, The Federal Government also warned that there were some brands of poisonous foreign rice in circulation.

Having critically examined the items, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Hameed Ali described rice imported into Nigeria as poisonous, advising Nigerians to stop consuming it.

He said: "A chemical must have been added to sustain its freshness and that chemical is harmful. Also, it has been re-bagged with a new date given as the production and expiry date and that is what we consume here which causes diseases.

"So, I appeal to Nigerians to please patronise our own rice; it is available, more nutritious and if you do that you will assist Customs by making sure these people are put out of business," Ali said during a press conference organised by the Ministry of Finance in Abuja.

The Customs CG said the Federal Government had not issued license for importation of rice and that any rice seen on the streets that was not produced in Nigeria was smuggled.

Illegal rice importation, he said, remains one of the biggest challenges facing the Nigeria Customs Service.

Also, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri said: "For imported rice, we don't know how long it had been in their (exporters) silos. Recently, one country decided to bring in a shipload of rice into Nigeria so that we can use it to support the IDPs (Internationally Displaced Persons) in the North-East, but when we subjected the rice to a test, we discovered that the rice was actually poisonous.

"This means that most imported rice have been in silos for 10 to 15 years and have no nutritional value. So what we have told them is that anybody who wants to support the IDPs or any other person in Nigeria should please use our local rice.

"The argument is that local rice is more expensive, but we say even if it means buying half bag, do it. It is better for us to eat a smaller quantity of nutritious rice than for us to take poisonous shiploads of rice," he said.

Meanwhile, foreign rice has continued to litter Nigerian markets. From Sango market in Ota, Ogun State to Daleko market in Mushin; Mile 2 in Lagos; Utako Market, Abuja; Terminus Market Jos; Mile 3 Market Port-Harcourt; Main Market, Onitsha; Singer Market in Kano; Ogbete Market in Enugu, and Jimeta Main Market in Yola, among others, foreign parboiled rice are predominantly displayed and gained so much patronage.

Checks revealed that many of these are smuggled rice. For example, The Guardian's investigation at Sango market showed that the smugglers came in as early as 4.00 am to offload the products to the rice dealers who usually buy as low as between N12,500 and 13,000 per 50 kg bag and resells at between N14,000 and 15,000 per bag.

In a chart with The Guardian, as smuggler at Sango market said: "rice trading" is one of the best business he like doing, claiming that as risky as the business may look, he makes good returns.

The young man, who identified himself as Taiwo Abe, said: "I don't know why government will ask us not to import rice. We are into business, after all, we don't kill and we are not stealing. We make meaningful income from this business and that is what I use to sustain my family. I have wife and children that I also need to feed and I cannot do rituals, I can't do Internet fraud (yahoo yahoo). But, the business of smuggling pays. I am a carpenter, but no patronage, no sales, so I need to look for alternative means of survival, and rice smuggling has helped me a lot,"

On the risk, he said: "There is no business that is not risky. I am nurtured on the street and I was trained to hustle. I use unapproved routes where no Customs officer will disturb you. Besides, we have some contacts that guide our movement, so, to me it's not a big deal."

A saleswoman, who simply identified herself as Risikat, said it is cheaper to patronize smugglers than the local rice millers, adding that even the customers prefer foreign rice.

"The only Nigerian rice that customers demand for is Ofada rice and I don't sell it. It is cheaper to buy from smugglers and I make more profit,"

She berate a situation whereby the Customs raid their shops and seized their stocks last year, calling on the Federal Government to also create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive. She said the bad economy is forcing people to look for alternative means of survival.

For the Nigerian Customs, it is an unending struggle. The officers are already overwhelmed with rice smuggling as they face reprisal attack and brutal retaliation on daily basis. For example, A Customs Assistant 1, Hamisu Sani, was killed in one of such encounter at Asero area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, while Tunde Wasiu Abdul'Azez was killed on Palace Road, Gumel Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

However, the seizures continued. The stores are filled to the brim. But the smugglers are unrelenting. The battle continues.

The Nigeria Customs Service said it seized 497,279 bags of imported rice between 2015 and August, 2017 with a Duty Paid Value of N3.8 billion. The effort by customs notwithstanding, the figure only represents a fraction of smuggled rice into the country within the review period.

In 2018, the Customs seized 238,094(50kg) bags of rice across the country from January to November. The bags of rice, according to the Public Relations Officer of Customs, Joseph Attah, worth N4.05 billion.

In Ogun State Area command, about 44,615 bags of foreign rice were seized between the period, while the Area II Command, Onne, Rivers State confiscated 118 containers loaded with foreign rice. Seme Command seized 37,568 bags of 50kg foreign rice, which is equivalent to over 63 trailers of rice, with DPV of N876 million in 2018.

In the first quarter 2019, the FOU Zone A intercepted 16,117 bags of 50kg parboiled rice; The Nigerian Navy, Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Akwa Ibom seized 2,044 bags of rice in one month (April).

The Commanding Officer, Forward Operating Base (FOB), Ibaka, Captain Toritseju Vincent said: "These anti-smuggling activities are inimical to the growth of our own rice industry. So we will continue to do our duty to make sure we nip it in bud, and bring it to a complete halt,"

He said the commodity was brought in with a boat, while the suspects abandoned the boat and the products, the pumping machine and fled.

Controller, Seme Command of Customs, Mohammed Uba Garba, who also berated the spate of rice smuggling into the country, said: "Government allowed the importation of fertiliser duty free with the aim to boost agricultural production. You are also aware that government has engaged some individuals with a view to stimulating local production of rice. This comes with benefits such as employment generation, preservation of foreign exchange, and food security among others.

"No nation can develop under hunger. People can se0ek advice on proposed ideas when they are properly fed. It is along this line that we are so much committed against the smuggling of foreign rice. Part of the danger of foreign rice is that it would deplete our foreign exchange. Besides, nobody knows the duration of when the rice was produced, but people will buy and consume it. It is hazardous to health," he stated.

Controller Federal Operation Unit (FOU) Zone A, Aliyu Mohammed, said: "Nobody will grow our economy for us, we must work together to make Nigeria great. If you go to Cotonou now, over N1 trillion bags of rice are waiting there and they must enter Nigeria. How many officers are in Customs? With all our efforts, some of them will find their way. We can't eradicate it completely because of the nation's porous borders. Besides, we don't have friends; people are always working against us. If you go out now and see them beating a Customs officer, you will join them to beat him. It is unfortunate. The smugglers are seeing it as their birthright to smuggle. They claimed they couldn't go to school and start looking for job after graduation, so they are looking for quick means of making money".

He alleged that the act of smuggling are perpetrated by the rich men, who see it as a booming business, saying, "A poor man can not use the small money he has to buy rice, but a rich man will buy it and use the poor man to smuggle it. They are using innocent people to enrich themselves. We should all work to support government policies. Go to Benin Republic, visit the round about area, you will discover that prices of houses have soar, because they have turned most of their residential buildings to warehouses where they keep rice and earn higher income. So, they get more money for keeping rice than rent it as residential".

He also emphasized the quality of local rice and its health benefits, saying: "Go and get the foreign rice and cook it. If you are a Hausa man, I will tell you to make Tuwo shinkafa. Then, get Kebbi or Abakaliki rice and make the same Tuwo shinkafa. Cover it throughout the day and open it in the morning. You will discover that the foreign rice will scatter because it is chemical rice, but our local rice will be intact and the aroma will be enticing. Then, you will never eat foreign rice again.

"Those who are saying that the local rice is not enough are the real smugglers because they don't want you to know the secrete. Go to Bida, Abakaliki, Adija, you will see the large expanse of land used in harvesting rice. We need to help our leaders. We need to help this country," he said.

Against the backdrop of the Nigerian government's policy on domestication of the rice industry and the war against its illegal importation, seaports of West African countries are still receiving large quantities of the commodity, apparently for onward shipment to Nigeria through the land borders. Consequently the commodity still tops the smuggling chart and seized items by the recent records of the Nigeria Customs Service, while poultry products and vehicles occupies the second and third highest smuggled items into the country.

According to Economic Confidential, in a three-week survey on the rice market across the six geopolitical zones in the country, Economic Confidential team observed that foreign rice such as Mama Gold, Royal Stallion, Rice Master, Caprice, Falcon Rice and Basmati are sold alongside Nigerian rice namely: Umza and Fursa Crown from Kano, Mama Happy from Niger, Labana Rice from Kebbi, Olam Rice from Nasarawa, Abakaliki Rice from Ebonyi, Ofada Rice from Ogun State, Swomen Dama from Plateau, Lake Rice of Lagos/Kebbi States among others.

National Deputy President, Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria, Segun Atho, told The Guardian that smuggling is a major threat to rice production in the country, but all hands are on deck to ensure that the nation feeds itself through sustainable local production of rice.

"Rice smuggling is another virus in the content of Nigeria, because if you look at the rate people smuggle rice, it is alarming. There are some cartels behind it that are not ready to sheath their swords. Rice is being produced by almost every nation and it has become a staple food, which is important to every nation that wants to survive.

"When we complain about smugglers, what about the Customs that are support to prevent them? They are there when the women are carrying small bags containing rice into the country. They are there when some people are using bad vehicles to convey smuggled goods. They are there what are they looking at? Although, some the Customs officers are good while they still have some bad elements among them. They will collect money from the smugglers and allow them to go.

"Also, the border communities see smuggling as their national cake and this is unfortunate. It is a serious situation. We have to fight together, if Nigeria want to attain self sufficiency and sustainability in rice production.

"Farmers are doing their best, and I can see that smuggling is reducing because right away, I am talking from the farm. All over the country, farmers are producing and we are trying to mop up the production for processing and for marketing and all hands are on deck.

He said the Anchor Borrowers Programme introduced by the Federal Government has helped farmers a lot.

Denying the claims that foreign rice is more than local rice in the market, Atho said: That is not true. What we have is that some rice sellers re-bag local products into foreign sacks and sell as imported rice. This is because of the consumption pattern of Nigerians and we really need to change that. We need to patronize locally made goods. Do you know that they are packing Nigerian rice in foreign bags? Because they know that the consumers cherished it. You have been eating Nigerian rice but you don't know. Go to the integrated rice mills in Kano, Kebbi, Wakot, Benue, Abakaliki. Coscharis, Dangote, Sam Egu are all bagging rice now.

The Rice Processors Association of Nigeria (RIPAN) had earlier raised an alarm that over one million metric tons of rice has been smuggled into Nigeria in the last three months.

The Chairman of RIPAN, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar Maifata made this revelation in Abuja, said: "Investors in Nigeria have made enormous financial commitment in the Rice Sub-sector. Unfortunately, the only threat to the industry's total development, is Smuggling.

Over one million metric tons of Rice which is equivalent to about 20,000,000 bags of 50kg rice have been smuggled into Nigeria in the last three months.

"Nigeria currently loses huge revenues, foreign exchange and Jobs to this menace as Nigeria Rice Processing companies are shutting down because of their inability to gain market access.

"More painfully millions of small-holder Farmers are stuck with their Paddy because the Millers can no longer afford to buy from them."

He said investigations conducted by the Association in the last few months indicated that, "all our international borders have been converted to smugglers route and our markets are filled with smuggled foreign rice".

He cautioned that, "there is the need for urgent actions to avert eventual national food emergency by combating smuggling so that we can continue to grow our local Rice industry and the economy".

Politics / Ondo Elections: Native Doctor Fortifying Eyitayo Jegede's Billboard - VIDEO by chimezieeze98: 1:19pm On Sep 05, 2020

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZrmh6d2_-M

A video making rounds online shows a native doctor (Babalawo) making some incantations on a billboard erected for the PDP Governorship candidate of the upcoming elections in the state; Eyitayo Jegede. The aim of the native doctor was to prevent vandals from destroying the billboard.

Earlier, the campaign organisation of Eyitayo Jegede has alleged that Governor Rotimi Akeredolu is preventing him from displaying his posters and billboards.

Mr Jegede is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and is considered the main challenger to Mr Akeredolu who is seeking reelection on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement on Thursday, the organisation, through its spokesperson, Samuel Fasua, accused the governor of “muzzling political opponents in the state, by preventing them from erecting campaign billboards.”
READ ALSO: Ondo Deputy-Governor: Nine lawmakers dump impeachment plan, back Ajayi

Mr Fasua said the development reeked of abuse of power and flagrant disobedience to extant laws granting political parties equal rights to relevant public utilities.

“Quite shockingly, the governor who is a senior advocate and one who should be passionate on the need to uphold the rule of law, looks away as the Ondo State Signage and Advertisement Agency (OSSAA) stands the law on the head,” he said.

“The agency has consistently rebuffed applications by opposition parties, most especially the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to mount billboards of their respective governorship candidates.

“One particular approach to perpetrating this subterfuge by the OSSAA, has been the deliberate hiking of their charges on signage permit to a ridiculously high level, all aimed at checkmating opposition parties.

“Besides, the agency has been withholding the signage licence to any advertising agency with application to mount billboards of the PDP governorship candidate, Mr Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), without any justification for its action.

“Whereas, it keeps giving express approval to the mounting of Akeredolu’s ‘Aketi’ billboards, in any location whatsoever; and from feelers, such approvals are often granted free of charge.”

Mr Fasua called on Mr Akeredolu to call officials of OSSAA to order, noting that only the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is empowered by law to regulate the activities of political parties, and not the OSSAA.

He, however, said Mr Jegede’s supporters had been calm in the face of mounting hostilities.

But the state’s Commissioner for Information, Donald Ojogo, refuted the allegation, advising the PDP to focus on its campaign and stop looking for excuses for its imminent failure.

“We urge the PDP to face its self-imposed challenges and work assiduously for the election if only to register yet another presence on the ballot,” said Mr Ojogo.

“We doubt if they even have billboards to erect in view of the daily depletion the party has suffered lately.

“It is better for them to withdraw from the race rather than scouting for straws.”

However, the spokesperson for the Deputy Governor, Tope Okeowo, told PREMIUM TIMES that the Zenith Labour Party candidate, Agboola Ajayi, was yet to witness such frustration from the agency.

“For now, nobody has stopped us from erecting billboards or posters anywhere,” Mr Okeowo said.

“Maybe because he is still the deputy governor and he still enjoys his immunity. Otherwise, we have not experienced that kind of thing, at least for now.”

Politics / Narional Assembly Underfunded, Says Commission Chairman by chimezieeze98: 2:31pm On Sep 04, 2020

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhgPzBE5L5g

The Chairman of the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC), Ahmed Amshi, has stated that the National Assembly is currently underfunded by the federal government.

He has therefore called for the increase of National Assembly’s annual budget, saying the appropriated N125 billion is not enough for the legislative arm to carry out its functions.

Amshi stated this on Tuesday in Abuja when he played host to the Chairman of the Benue State House of Assembly Commission (BSHAC), Dr. Sylvester Atachin, and other commissioners who were on a working visit to the commission.

He said: “The National Assembly and by extension the Service Commission is not having enough resources to perform its functions optimally.

“The N125 billion annually appropriated by the federal government for the National Assembly is not sufficient and we seek an increase to enable us achieve more and ensure stability in the legislative arm of government.”

Amshi also stressed the need for state Houses of Assembly Commissions to as a matter of necessity, separate themselves from the control of the executive in the states.

He insisted that a situation where the executive takes charge to hire and fire aides to legislators is not acceptable as it erodes the principle of separation of powers.

The chairman further explained that parliament across the globe is independent, “not under any control of the Executive, even in the recruitment and management of its staff and same should apply in the state Assemblies, too”.

Amshi told his visitors to learn how to run the recently established Benue State Assembly Commission “especially in how the commission will be run and specifically on setting up its own staff structure and management”.

Speaking earlier, Atachin stated that the team’s visit to the National Assembly Commission was with a view to rubbing minds on a number of issues which can be of benefit to the state Assembly commission “as we commence the journey of providing critical administrative support to the state House of Assembly".

He said: “Our journey commenced with the passage of the Benue State House of Assembly Service Commission 2018 Bill which was assented to by the governor on 11th Day of April 2018.

“Consequently, this five-member commission was inaugurated on June 6, 2020. As a relatively new institution in Nigeria’s democratic history, we intend to share in your wealth of experience.”

Crime / VIDEO: Police Officer, Five Others, Killed In Bank Robbery In Niger State by chimezieeze98: 8:33am On Sep 04, 2020

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=is9fqmscKsg

A police officer and five others were on Wednesday killed in Kagara town following a bank robbery in Rafi local government area of Niger State.

Kagara is the council headquarters of Rafi local government area. Wednesday’s attack is the third in a year, the gunmen struck twice in a month, residents said.

Six people, including a mobile police officer, were killed in the latest attack, according to residents of the area.

The state government, in a press statement, confirmed the incident, calling for calm, saying the government is deploying all resources at its disposal to ensure the protection of lives and property.

Residents said gunmen numbering about 100 stormed the town on motorcycles, wielding sophisticated weapons. They said the assailants rode straight to a First Bank branch and engaged armed security personnel in a fire fight.

In the process, one police officer was shot dead and many others residents injured. However, the gunmen were unable to loot the bank but they broke into the ATMs and carted away money, many residents said.

The gunmen also abducted many residents during the attack, a source said, asking not to be named for security reasons.

The gunmen launched the attack around 6pm with the intent of robbing the bank, and operated unchallenged for hours, despite the efforts of residents to notify the relevant security agencies about the attack, sources said.

A resident of Madaka community, on the outskirts of Kagara town, told PREMIUM TIMES that the gunmen passed through their village before reaching Kagara town. The resident said security agencies were informed about the movement of the bandits; however, no action was taken to prevent the attack.

Wasiu Abiodun, the police spokesperson in Niger State, did not respond to multiple calls and messages seeking comment.

The Rafi council area in Niger State shares a border with the restive Birnin Gwari local government area in Kaduna state.

Banditry has been a long-running scourge for residents of the area. In Niger State, between 2011 and June 2020, over 582 people were killed in attacks within that period.

In its statement, the state government through the state governor’s press secretary, Mary Noel-Berje, appealed to residents of the area to remain calm and maintain peace.

“This appeal is coming against the backdrop of bandits’ attack on the town and the panic elicited by a social media video, in which the residents of the area were seen running helter skelter and calling for intervention from the state government and the army,” the statement read.

The state governor also expressed condolence to the victims of the attack, maintaining that no responsible government would sit idle and allow its citizens to be mauled down

“The governor commiserates with the families of those who lost their lives in the attack, and prayed for speedy recovery for the injured victims.”

The governor also acknowledged the enormity of the security challenges facing the state, but assured the people of the state and its security agencies remain undaunted in its war against criminal elements

“He solicited the cooperation of the people for their useful information to the security agencies, assuring them that their identity will be kept confidential,” the statement ended.

Obaseki assures of violence-free election, urges electorate to come out, vote for PDP

The Edo State Governor and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has urged eligible voters in the state to come out en masse on September 19, 2020 and vote for the PDP to enable him consolidate on his achievements in the first term, assuring that the electioneering process will be violence-free.

Addressing party faithful during his reelection campaign rally in Urhonigbe wards 7 and 8, Orhionmwon Local Government Area, Obaseki charged the electorate to turn out without fear of intimidation or harassment to vote and stay back to defend their votes.

“Come out and vote, don’t be afraid as there would be no violence; nobody will fight on that day, come out and vote. I am assuring you as the Chief Security Officer of the state that there will be no violence in Edo during this election. We all made a promise at the palace of His Royal Majesty, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, that there would be no violence during this election,” he assured.

The governor continued: “Vote for the PDP and stay back to defend your votes so that your votes will count and when I come back as governor, Urhonigbe Community will receive more attention from my administration.

“We started a rubber plantation in Urhonigbe about a year ago as we have to create jobs for our young ones; we have to create a new economy as we cannot continue relying on crude oil. This election will determine if we will continue to do things that will move us forward or allow all those people who put us where we are, to come back, but God forbid!

“I know your problems here; look at the gully erosion ravaging some parts of this place. I saw it with my eyes and I have to do something about it,” he assured.

Earlier, the Chairman of Edo State PDP Campaign Council, Chief Dan Orbih, noted: “From all the places we have visited, the people expressed their readiness to reelect Obaseki. Our visit is to come and thank you people and to appeal to you all that this election will determine the future of Edo people. Since the time of Obafemi Awolowo, no other governor has paid attention to agriculture like our Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.

“He has started doing something in rubber plantation and palm oil production. We must encourage him by voting massively for him, so that he can continue the good work.”

“For all of you here, don’t exercise any fears because one with God is a majority. Please let us take this message to all the units in wards 7 and 8. For those preaching violence, I want to tell them that we are committed to peace; in being peaceful, we are going to be mindful of anybody trying to take our victory; we will defend our votes,” he said.

Politics / Edo 2020: Emulate Jonathan, Oba Of Benin Charges Politicians (VIDEO) by chimezieeze98: 8:32am On Sep 03, 2020

BENIN CITY – IT was a historic moment, on Thursday, as the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, met with political parties and leaders, where he sued for peace and urged them to emulate the action of former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 when he lost to President Muhammadu Buhari.

First to meet with the monarch were the two gladiators: Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and All Progressives Congress, APC, who Oba Ewuare II said they were heating up the polity.

While noting that elections were not a do-or-die affair, he said the politicians must note that they have only Edo State to call their own and, thus, must do everything to protect it from disintegration.

He said not only had the state been in the news for the wrong reasons, but the governorship election had also pitched the people against themselves. He said: “Today is a very historic day in the history of Edo State and in the history of the ancient Kingdom of Benin.

“I don’t think we had reasons to call this kind of meeting. I appreciate the respect you gentlemen have shown to the traditional institution. “Edo politics have been in the news for quite some time now for all the wrong reasons.

We have sleepless nights for quite sometimes now because these are all our people; these are people of the same stock, from the same body.

There is nobody that is a stranger to each other. “I have been worried; I have been worried right from the time the conflict started between Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the former governor and the incumbent governor, His Excellency Godwin Obaseki.

“I want you to take your mind back to 2015. Before the final election results were announced, President Goodluck Jonathan picked up his telephone and called President Buhari.

“All the predictions, forecasts by the international community that Nigeria will break up, it is going to be on fire everything was quenched just by that singular act. “I actually admire President Jonathan for his humility, for the gentlemanly way he handled 2015 election.

“You are all political actors in Edo State knowing where you are coming from. You have been together, now you are not together. “You confuse the press, you confuse the public, you are confusing everybody. Why are you all doing this? Is it just because of the office?

“It is for four years and at most another four years. Why will you now want lives to be lost? Why do we hear that you are arming thugs? Why?”

The monarch extracted commitment to peace from the leaders, including Governor Godwin Obaseki, his deputy Comrade Philip Shaibu, the candidate of the APC, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Oshiomhole and the South-South Vice Chairman of PDP, Chief Dan Orbih.

On his part, former National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun lauded the initiative of the Oba.

Politics / VIDEO: Edo, Ondo Elections: IGP Meets Csos, Assures Of Police Neutrality by chimezieeze98: 1:23pm On Sep 01, 2020

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ls--GqSjv8

The Inspector General of Police(IGP), Mohammed Adamu, yesterday, met with members of the Nigeria Civil Society Organisation (CSOs) Situation Room team led by Clement Nwankwo to brainstorm on the conduct of peaceful gubernatorial elections in Edo and Ondo states.

At the meeting held at the Police Force Headquarters, Abuja, the IGP while acknowledging the contributions of CSOs as key actors in electioneering processes, said the meeting was necessary given the anticipated challenges in the elections and the need to forge a common front for the conduct of crisis free polls in the two states.

He assured that the police would remain neutral and professional in the election and promised to deploy all resources to ensure a level playing field for all parties.

On the likelihood of the outbreak of violence, the IGP said the police had already deployed intelligence to generate threat analysis which would be used to sustain their processes in elections in both states, to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

“The objective is to share knowledge and compare knowledge especially in regards to experiences with election security in Nigeria. We shall have discussions on key indicators of election security threats, especially arming and movement of political thugs, use of inciting statements during political campaigns, high likelihood of violence and issues of misinformation and disinformation aimed at heating up the polity,” he said.

Politics / VIDEO: Edo Election Campaign Turns To Smear War As APC/PDP Trade Blames by chimezieeze98: 1:41am On Aug 30, 2020

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wt3qZlH-IFI

The ongoing Edo State governorship election campaign which has already been adjudged as the dirtiest in the history of the state, this week, took a further dip into muddy waters with the smear campaign extending to the election regulatory body.

The attack on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC came by way of salvos on one of the probable officials that could be deployed by the commission to preside over the election.

Mainly involved in the smear campaigns are the two leading parties in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the All Progressives Congress, APC who incidentally, have also recruited proxy parties to do their biddings against their rivals.

The smear campaign opened on Monday with the PDP bringing to the public the quiet apology by the APC over the claim the previous week that Pastor Osagie-Ize Iyamu, the APC candidate had been endorsed by the Benin Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (BENCCIMA).

The APC campaign had been forced on Sunday, to issue a quiet apology in which it blamed a low-ranking campaign staff for misconstruing the chamber’s interaction with Ize-Iyamu into an endorsement. Crusoe Osagie, Governor Godwin Obaseki’s spokesman in a statement on Monday urged other groups whose names have been used by the APC to conjure endorsements that were never given, in the party’s desperate bid to market and re-brand their gubernatorial candidate who is heavily burdened with credibility crisis, to speak up.

“By challenging APC’s fabricated endorsement, BENCCIMA has defended its rule book and its set objectives, and has sent a strong message to identity thieves like the APC, that you cannot fool the people all the time.” The APC retorted sharply on Wednesday when it brought the issue of the missing Edo State commissioner for arts and culture, Osaze Ero-Osemwingie as its main bullet.

Ero-Osemwingie, the commissioner for arts and culture has been out of the country since last year having reportedly been apprehended in a European country over alleged transgressions. On Wednesday, the APC campaign turned the issue into an armour in a statement authored by John Mayaki, Ize-Iyamu’s spokesman asking the governor to explain the absence of his commissioner since the beginning of the year.

The party made this challenge on Wednesday following what it described as the Governor’s quiet replacement of the Commissioner with the swearing-in of Mr. Lawrence Ogieva as the new Commissioner for Arts, Culture, and Diaspora Affairs. He also questioned the governor’s silence on the issue. In his response, Obaseki speaking through Osagie accused the APC of running out of steam and resorting to cheap blackmail and falsehoods in its bid to remain relevant in the ongoing electioneering campaigns.

“On a daily basis, leaders of the APC consciously churn out falsehood to attract the attention of Edo people, who have already confined their gubernatorial candidate, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, to history,” he said. “The party’s candidate and his followers have realised that their theatrics do not resonate with Edo people, hence the resort to smear campaign to dent the image of Governor Godwin Obaseki, with all manners of allegations, from the ridiculous to the absurd.”

The two sides have also fought over the outstanding court cases involving one another.

The PDP had through its publicity secretary, Chris Nehikhare raised the alarm on the alleged plot by the APC to move court cases involving one another out of Edo State to Abuja. When later in the week the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court sanctioned the move, the APC remonstrated with the PDP saying: “It is on record that the PDP for many months now have been boasting that they will use the Court to subvert the will of the People.

They know their candidate is not popular and has no single chance of winning the election, hence the only alternative is to get the mandate through the back door, reenacting the Bayelsa State travesty.”

While the two candidates and their proxies have been turning on one another, the PDP campaign chief, Chief Dan Orbih has also not relented in his attacks on Comrade Adams Oshiomhole who he has repeatedly dubbed as the godfather of the APC candidate, Ize-Iyamu.

His campaign weapon has been to use Oshiomhole’s wounding words of 2016. Speaking at Ugbegun in Esan West Local Government Area on Monday, Orbih salvaged Oshiomhole as double mouthed saying: “He also told us that the pastor is not fit to rule this state; he also told us that he cannot be trusted with public funds.

“To me, all what he said about his candidate has not changed. How can he make a u-turn and start telling Edo people to vote for that same man?

Edo people are not fools; that is why I want to say that Oshiomhole is not a magician; he cannot turn white to black and black to white.”

Why Igini May Not Be Involved In Edo Polls On Thursday, the smear campaign extended to former civil rights activist and Resident Electoral Commissioner for Akwa Ibom State after the APC campaign accused him of a secret dalliance with Governor Obaseki.

The APC in a statement issued by Mayaki alleged that Mike Igini met with Obaseki in the governor’s private residence where a deal to rig the election was allegedly plotted. Igini in a swift response made available to Saturday Vanguard denied the report saying he passed through Edo State to Delta State for a funeral ceremony.

The INEC REC clarified that he passed a night in Benin last Sunday on his way to his home state, Delta State, having travelled by road, specifically Aniocha North, to attend the funeral ceremony (23rd to 25th) of the Mother of a long time close friend.

Igini who said he passed the night in Benin had since returned to Lagos and not in Benin on the night of 25th that Mayaki authored report claimed lgini was seen in company of other two persons to meet Gov. Obaseki. “Is it possible for an individual to be at two different locations i.e Benin and Lagos the same night?

He also added that ordinarily, he would not have responded to such “barefaced lies, very absurd and nonsensical insinuations, having heard worse things in the past over elections, where political actors/election riggers that have little or no regard in their utterances for the institutional pillars of democratic society have continued to destroy institutions of state and personal reputation that people have built over the years.”

Meanwhile, Saturday Vanguard has learnt that the focus on Igini may have been prompted by insinuations that he could be deployed as one of the federal commissioners to supervise the election. Igini had won popular acclaim among independent stakeholders in the country upon his efforts in Akwa Ibom State in the 2019 General Election.

Sources close to the development in Edo State told Saturday Vanguard that the effort of the attack on Igini may have been to preclude him from being one of those to be deployed to the state given that a party in the election has already named him to be in cahoots with a rival
